Rain World is one of the most interesting and unique Metroidvanias I've played. I'm keeping this as spoiler-free as possible.
The Good:

You may have noticed that I only have minor complaints. That's because this game is great, and you should play it if you're interested. Truly an S-tier Metroidvania.
I recommend to play the Survivor. Don't rush. Take your time to explore and learn the enemies. And don't be afraid to die. Your Karma isn't that important for most of the game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tRain World is one of the most interesting and unique Metroidvanias I've played. I'm keeping this as spoiler-free as possible.
The Good:
- Simple controls but deep movement system with lots of hidden (intended) tricks to discover. These aren't required to finish the game, but will help with platforming and dealing with predators.
- Complex enemy AI and interactions, with personality traits, different behavior around other creatures, and reputation systems. Be nice to certain creatures to gain their trust. Or don't.
- Equally complex decision making. Do you sneak past, run away, or engage in combat? It always depends on the enemies and the situation.
- There are no permanent movement upgrades, which makes this an almost 100% open world from the beginning. While there is clearly an intended path for a first playthrough, you could go any number of ways and still arrive at your destination.
- The rain cycles and survival mechanics (finding food and shelter) will lead to some tense high stakes moments.
- Whatever species the protagonist belongs to, it's cute.
The not Bad:
- The unpredictable nature of the AI can lead to some seemingly unfair deaths. But in hindsight, most of them can still be avoided with enough skill and experience.
- Compulsive completionists might be interested in the colored pearls, which are sometimes hidden in hard to reach spots, and are the only items that could be considered "collectibles". But to actually get anything out of them involves a lot of tedium. I don't think it was meant for one player to get all of them in one playthrough, or even more than just a few. You can store them in shelters if you really want to, and figure out what you can do with them later.
The actually Bad:
- There is one section in Five Pebbles where the gravity gets periodically turned on and off. It looks cool, at first, but the way it's executed only makes you wait every few seconds, because you just can't progress when it's turned on. It's the only time I got mildly bored in the game.
- You have a strong incentive to befriend the Scavengers, because they will escort and try to protect you. But this can also lead to chaos with them blocking you everywhere, especially in Subterranean where you have to crawl through one-tile spaces.

Other than that it arguably has the best storyline of any game ive played, the visuals are so eye pleasing and i cant imagine how long it took them to make each room. The music, the world-building, the story - I could go on and on about how I love and find every single aspect of this game gorgeous but I won’t (for everybody’s sake).
My only disclaimer, and a quite common one I have noticed being passed around is the sheer difficulty of the game (as it is *kind of* an “Oh sorry you’re having trouble doing this parkour? Oh well, cast 500 vultures). I see many complain about the unfair kills and general infuriating nature of the game, but frankly I would argue it adds to the charm of being in a world that doesn’t revolve around you. Or as my friend likes to say: Skill issue, get good. On an unrelated note I also remember being absolutely baffled by the keyboard key binds but TRUST me it makes things SO much simpler in the long run. You’ll eventually get used to the mechanics and such but it never stops being boring. I will admit quite a few features in Downpour should have generally been included in the main game. But other than that, I think everything is Great.
I know I am a hypocrite for this but I truly recommend straying away from guides or maps unless you are beyond the verge of a meltdown! It truly makes the game so much more immersive if you take your time exploring!!! Being stuck below the required Karma for Karma Gates ultimately (or at least in my perspective) serves as a skill check and if you’re struggling to get past it, try a different route!

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSuch a unique game, I love it, has some of my favourite lore and environmental storytelling ever in a game. My first experience playing the base game before moving onto the downpour DLC has stuck with me ever since I played it. Getting past the initial hurdles of just trying to survive in the initial areas only to then discover through exploration how big the world really is. I can't really go into detail since this game I feel is best played without knowing anything beyond the fact that if you like platformers, movement tech, atmospheric worlds & rich lore then you may enjoy this game. One of those games where you either hate it or completely fall in love with it. You will have to put up with a lot of unfair deaths, just part of the game. When you reach a new area after much trial and error it can feel very rewarding, especially when the music hits. A particularly great part about this game is that it is mostly knowledge-gated, you don't unlock powers, or follow a linear story, you have every ability from the get-go, you just need to learn/discover how to do it (A big part of the reason I love outer wilds). People who play Kenshi may really like this game as well, same feeling of uniqueness, environmental lore and uncaring world.
The soundtrack is fantastic, whilst I wouldn't listen to it on spotify (At least most of it), it is perfect in-game, and if you stick with the game there are certain milestones that will make Rainworld unforgettable (if you enjoyed it enough to get that far).
Whilst I'm at it I'm namedropping a couple other games that people who play tend to enjoy rainworld; Celeste and Hollowknight/Silksong. So uh, if any of these are your top games, hell if multiple are, then GET RAINWORLD.

For the most part the camera is fine, but god it can really feel like it is fighting you in some areas. It is incredibly unfair when you just transition to the right side of a room, camera follows only for you to realise you are face to face with a lizard or some other creature. Also there is 1 area in the game that has a gimmick for moving around which is incredibly inconsistent and can just lead to you being trapped and running out of time. Also sometimes moving to another area through a pipe can cause you to die as soon as you reach the other side (This is much rarer and is usually avoided, sometimes hard to tell where you are in time though because of, again, the camera). Deaths for any other unfair reason however, e.g. brutal spawns I will not critique, since I feel it is just part of the environment simulation, which makes the game so immersive and stand out amongst so many other games. You can mitigate some of the issues with the camera by using the map to look at what enemies it detects in the current room, but it can feel a little tedious having to open it each time, and I'm also not sure if that is part of the remix mod (built-in I believe) or if its base game.
The AI is pretty incredible, as goofy as it can be sometimes, it does feel like you are engaging with actual creatures. Half of them are nightmare fuel so that is fun. It is amazing, its the one thing i will hold dear in my heart forever, it is currently helping so much during a hard time for me, there are no words that can express my love for this game, it helped me bring my creative spark back, it bonded some of my friends together, it'll help me look back at times like these and remember.. it wasn't all that bad.

The game will not get easier, YOU have to get better at the game. There are no upgrades, there is only rocks, and spears for attack, and explosives lol. The art, environments, enemies, challenge, and all the times I yelled because a lizard killed me makes the game what is it, beautiful. If you play this game, know that the game is unfair, realize that you aren't supposed to win, but despite that, keep pushing on to the nearest shelter. This is one of the best games I've played in a while. I will be playing a lot more lol. But if you can get one thing to remember from this review, know that this game is worth buying, no matter the cost\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This game is such a genuine masterclass in making a stupidly hard and unfair game extremely fun and enjoyable. I find it hard to articulate why I feel such immense love for this games utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but it is absolutely incredible.
On top of that, its easily the most beautiful 2d game I have ever played, and the world feels so alive because of it. The world itself is vast and full of complex life that challenges you at every step, and its always so fun to learn and go against. The way the ecosystem functions in this game makes it such an exclusive experience to explore for the first time, with different encounters between enemies always popping up no matter where you go.
Rain World also succeeds surprisingly well with its story, which to be honest is quite shocking, as a majority of the game lacks any kind of dialogue. While I do personally believe the survivor campaign could have definitely been more compelling and gripping, I'd be lying if I said the ending didn't make me feel something.
I do have one critical downside, though. Despite this game feeling very Metroidvania like, the backtracking was either boring, or undeniably miserable when I had to interact with it. The passage system does alleviate this slightly, however the problem still exists due to how few and far between passage unlocks actually are. The game does luckily end up accounting for this later on, with what could have been the largest backtracking section in the entire game from Five Pebbles to Subterranean. The game placed this zone and its connections in a way that allowed me to take a route which pretty much only included new areas for me, which was insanely refreshing and I am so thankful.
I will for sure check out Downpour and The Watcher.

The game is really REALLY cool, but I can't recommend it unless you like this kind of game. If you truly love gaming, and can bear lots of brutal, often unfair deaths, then you should absolutely give it a shot. It is really a unique experience. Otherwise, try it if you only if you really want. As of writing this, I haven't even completed one campaign. I've been playing it on and off, getting too busy to play and losing motivation and whatnot.
The OST is also amazing. I use it to study and it tickles my brain heehee

I don't really know how to assess how "good" the difficulty of the game is, but I do know is that the game is just really really cool.
I think there are few things they should've done differently. for one, I think karma gates should be permanently unlocked once you unlock them once. I heard someone make this point before I got too far in the game, but I have come across several scenarios where you just have to sit and grind food, hoping you don't die for however many cycles you need. Doing that kind of puts a pause in where the fun of this game is at. Exploring, learning behaviors, and finding a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shelter.
Also, one thing I will say about the difficulty. It kind of hinders the game's ability to be an exploration game I think. It almost feels like you have to randomly choose a path to go, bash your head against it until you make it, and just hope and pray that it is the correct way. Not sure if that makes sense. I guess that's why it is a survival game.

The fact that you have to go on a whole side mission to translate the pearls for a tiny bit of lore seems kind of silly to me. There is a lot of walking around, with your only objective being to struggle to the next room. Exploration isn't being rewarded at all, the gameplay doesn't change at any point of the game.

The controls are clunky and often feel inconsistent, especially in regards to horizonal climbing or moving though tight spaces, the latter being something you can expect to do a lot of. The hunger and karma systems, while successful in adding a survival element to the game in the form of gathering food, mainly just serve to add a layer of tedium to saving/checkpoints and moving between areas. The ecosystem, while technically impressive, adds a random factor to enemy locations that leads to a constant chance for any path to be arbitrarily blocked off for any given cycle.
5 hours in and it looks like a major character is permenantly injured because I ate the wrong food in an area where food was sparse to begin with, so I think I'll just leave it here. Despite being a fan of games typically considered hard, I find myself with less and less patience for "bad on purpose" type game design. Really feels like the game should either be much shorter per playthrough, or commit more fully to it's platforming or survival sides instead of fumbling both.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I thought it was too unforgiving and too unfair, too easy to get lost in the vast world and fall victim to predators in the ecosystem. I played the game for about an hour or so before just getting frustrated and never touching it again for a while.
Then, I came back to it a long while later to give it another chance one day, and I'm just going to say that after I became more and more accustomed to everything, Rain World ended up becoming one of my favorite games of all time. You're a creature at the very bottom of the food chain, and while other Slugcat's have better ways of defending themselves, that's still what you are at the end of the day: prey. You're expected to die a lot, you're expected to get lost quite often, you're expected to get frustrated, and I believe that's how the game manages to simulate an ecosystem so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ well.
Aside from the gameplay however, the world-building... the environments, the constant thought of what happened to this world, the creatures and how they all look and act, the OST... They are all genuinely god-like.
If you do play the game, go in knowing that it's very difficult the first times around, and you're going to die a lot and get frustrated... But if you can get pass that, it's one of the most greatest games I've ever played.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAs an environmental sim I give this a 10/10, as a game I give this a 10/10, as a rage simulator I give this a 10/10, Rain World makes you rethink your life at times, and makes you think of ending it at others. It's a beutiful and precedually generated game that can take your breath away in both senses of the term. I adore this game no matter how much it makes me want to throw this computer at the damn sun and yell at the top of my lungs. (sorry for any misspellings.) It's randomized ai and movement make the game feel real, and real is not fair. Do not play this game if you have anger issues at all.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
