\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game is great, and I had a bunch of fun playing... alone, sadly. Unfortunately, there is one problem that I have with this game. That is the fact that it fails the same way other FPS rouge=like games do. It's only good at one part of the genre.
The FPS part is great. In a way, it's a bit of a boomer shooter which is a good thing if you can handle the stress that comes with that kind of gameplay. But the rouge-like aspect of the game might as well be nonexistent.
There aren't any real choices to be made like in a traditional rouge-like. There aren't any interesting builds to be made (that are good). All the good builds are just high damage, high damage, and high damage. The game has a relatively interesting magic element system, but the guns can't really interact with them, and when they do, it's really underwhelming. The thing is the magic doesn't have a system in which it can scale and do a bunch of damage like stacking damage and attack speed buffs with the primary guns.
Also, the ability to pick permanent jokers is fun and allows you to not rely on pure luck although it kind of defeats the whole rouge-like aspect of them game since you will come in the mission fully kitted out from the beginning.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tVery repetitive gameplay. It can be fun for a few hours, but after that it gets really boring. There's basically no enemy AI since they just walk towards one player in a straight line. They all conga towards you while ignoring everyone else. If something spawned targeting someone who isn't you, you can literally swim inside of them. They will never attack you. Frequently they get caught on invisible walls and they just hold still without even trying to attack you, and sometimes they even get caught on nothing and they just hold still for no reason. Even ranged enemies will stop attacking you when this happens.
Most enemies are also just guys that walk towards you then swing at you. There's one enemy that shoots a slow bullet at you, and one that will hit you with a hitscan beam if you don't shoot him before he finishes charging. That's basically all of the enemies.
Very little customization is available. There's only a few guns, and most of them feel very similar. The primary weapons are a machinegun, a machinegun that's less accurate, a machinegun that requires you to constantly be holding right click 24/7 because there's no reason not to, a slow sniper, and a less slow sniper. Most of the perks you can put on the weapons don't change how the weapon plays or feels and mostly just increases its damage.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tpretty fun only in short bursts as it gets repetitive quickly due to the different maps rarely ever introducing a unique challenge, so the only thing that really changes mission to mission is the assortment of the objects you look at while holding the 'interact' button. build variety suffers due to DPS-affecting perks and upgrades competing with pure utility options like slightly reduced bullet spread or faster weapon swap speed for the exact same limited pool of things you can have installed on a gun prior to going out. the newest additions to the enemy roster and the player arsenal are questionable but the main reason this review is negative is because a game like this with no disconnection protections at all, especially considering the amount of grind it takes to actually fully upgrade a weapon, is completely unrecommendable\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As someone who has previously played Deep Rock Galactic for hundreds of hours on my PS5, this game really does capture the same horde shooter insanity while also incentivizing good teamwork and comradery. Plus, all of the customizability and all the combos make the action really fun too. Out of all the games I have played in a long time, Far Far West: Frostburn is easily one of the best. I give it a flat-out 10 out of 10. Even though I haven't even unlocked all of the spells or guns yet, I am completely hooked on the gameplay loop.
The standout feature for me is how flawlessly the game integrates gunplay with magic spells. Combining shooting with magical elements feels incredibly satisfying, and the build variety gets even better when you start picking up upgrade cards mid-run. It makes every playthrough feel fresh and unpredictable. (Though I do have to give a special shoutout to the Rubber Duck upgrade card. It literally just gives you squeaky shoes. There is nothing quite like trying to pull off an epic, high-stakes magical gunfight while sounding like a walking dog toy, but it perfectly sums up the game's chaotic energy).

Out of all the games I have played in a long time, Far Far West: Frostburn is easily one of the best. I give it a flat-out 10 out of 10. Even though I haven't even unlocked all of the spells or guns yet, I am completely hooked on the gameplay loop.
The standout feature for me is how flawlessly the game integrates gunplay with magic spells. Combining shooting with magical elements feels incredibly satisfying, and the build variety gets even better when you start picking up upgrade cards mid-run. It makes every playthrough feel fresh and unpredictable. (Though I do have to give a special shoutout to the Rubber Duck upgrade card. It literally just gives you squeaky shoes. There is nothing quite like trying to pull off an epic, high-stakes magical gunfight while sounding like a walking dog toy, but it perfectly sums up the game's chaotic energy).

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's a fun mix of various things - reminded me of DRG and Helldivers, but then throws in spellcasting and puzzles - even just the initial ones created for early access are enough to keep me interested and playing, am looking forward to more.
Progression wise, the joker system gives quite a bit of creativity for how to play (some change the nature of weapons pretty heavily), as they are per-weapon and there's also jokers specifically for your character too - some interesting combinations to experiment with. There's also per-character and per-weapon stat buffs available (up to 20 points) that improve yourself/your weapons as you level up. Has been a fun process trying various things out.
It's visually interesting, performant, and honestly sets the bar too high for early access in terms of polish and lack of bugs I've encountered.
The Frostburn update has just come out and I'm yet to check it out but looks like they've added a lot more content and have a good looking roadmap for future releases.
