Some issues:
Overall, this is an excellent and satisfying sequel very much worth its price, with a high replay value. Thank you Auroch Digital for the game! \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\t- Two playable characters: In the first game, we could only play as a Space Marine. In Boltgun 2, we can also play as a Sister of Battle, who has her own unique abilities, weapons and equipment. Both characters seem fairly balanced in combat effectiveness. The Sister has only half the HP of the Space Marine, but she is more mobile. Because of this, I would say playing the Sister is slightly more difficult. To elaborate further on this...
- New gameplay approach: I have finished the game with both characters. The Sister's improved mobility and unique abilities bring more potential for new strategies, she can dodge projectiles with ease due to her speed, kick enemies off the map to completely neutralise them and save ammo, and detonate her bomb prematurely if that is preferable. Meanwhile, the Space Marine is a better option for players who prefer the classic shooter feel, with a bigger focus on utilising cover rather than dodging, as enemies have better accuracy in this game and can predict the player's movement. You will play the same levels with both characters and they will feel entirely different.
- Maps and navigation: Level layouts are more intuitive, without the “this feels like a maze” moments of the first game (which is partly understandable, as we mostly fought Tzeentch followers and their trickery there). There is finally a map you can open, similar to the ones in the newer Doom games, with key areas and secrets marked. I have yet to lose my way in this game.
- Replay value and branching: Game will branch at a few points throughout the game, as the player will have to select different mission sets to progress. They usually differ by the Chaos force the player chooses to fight. There are also a few optional levels. As a result, not all levels can be completed in a single run. The game has a handy Level Select section where the player can see which levels were skipped in their first playthrough.
- Levels and bosses: There are many levels spread across different planets. All of them feel new and barely any feel repetitive, from their design and layout to their enemy selection. Most levels feature a specific Chaos faction (Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne, Slaanesh or Undivided), and each requires different tactics to defeat. The special bosses feel like actual bosses rather than just bullet sponges.
- Secrets: It is much more satisfying to look for secrets in Boltgun 2 than in Boltgun 1. The locations make more sense and have some hints, instead of being behind random walls you just have to approach or shoot at out of nowhere. I especially like that Khorne levels are full of skull-related secrets.
- Voice and character design: Friendly characters (mostly Kriegsmen) are a new addition. Enemies have a more elaborate selection of sprites and more sound effects. There is more variety in enemy design and loadouts, which means more strategies to consider when fighting them. Some special friendly characters and enemies even have unique names, though you will probably miss them in the chaos of battle. Which brings us to...
- Attention to detail: If you are a big W40k fan, you will notice small details everywhere. This is not a Doom game with a W40k skin. It is a game in its own right, with extremely well-done world and environment building, which only took inspiration from Doom-style combat. Watching opposing Chaos forces fight each other was a 10/10 experience. Also, that CHAOS FILTH reference kept me smiling for a while.
- Weapons: Some new, some old, all of them fairly balanced and usable throughout the game. Playable characters share some of the weapons. Toughness from Boltgun 1 has been removed, which makes all the weapons relevant at all the times in the game. Ammo is common for all the weapons so it is not necessary to save it up unless playing on the Exterminatus difficulty. There is also a visual difference between ammo stack sizes found on the map. Effects and animations are high quality.
- Music: Metal. Also, Mick Gordon. Enough said.
- Performance: The game runs smoothly, and I haven’t had a single crash, lag or error.
Some issues:
- Bugs: Basically none, apart from a few instances of bugged dead sprites (a Havoc keeps walking in place even though he is dead!), which will probably be patched soon.
- Unusual difficulty spikes: Some mid-level fights seem harder than some bosses. This is especially true for Nurgle levels, as Nurgle enemies seem to be the most challenging due to their spread projectiles. Some of these arenas are more difficult because of the lack of healing items and armor.
- Nurglings: It could just be me, but their projectiles deal a fair chunk of damage. They are a swarm enemy, so it seems a little too much.
- Horrors: I understand ranged or some bulkier enemies not being able to jump in order to chase down the player, but why do small, agile daemons like Horrors just stand really confused around a meter tall box the player is standing on? It seems a little too easy to handle these enemies. Nurglings, Daemonettes and Bloodletters do not have this problem, and, like the Horrors, they are all lesser daemons.
- Chainsword lock-in: it sometimes does not detect the enemy in front of you, which disrupts the combat flow.
- Mission Stats: Sometimes, for completed missions in Level Select menu, it is displayed that the completion time is 00:00, even though the mission is completed normally and other stats show properly. Also, replaying a level where the Purity Seal was previously found, I have noticed that I can collect the Purity Seal again and it shows I have collected 2/1 of them during the mission.
- Final boss: Not sure if it is just me, but the final boss felt underwhelming. The majority of tough enemies spawn in the central area of the arena and cannot access other areas, so if the player sticks around in one of the side areas, the main boss will follow them. Destroying the healing pylons in that area then makes the boss fairly easy to deal with. I also had to reload the game once because he suddenly disappeared.
- Personal suggestion: I really like the sprites in this game and I am a huge W40k nerd. Having a special menu where we can have an enemy overview, showing their lore along with their sprites and animations, describing their variants and stats, playing their sounds etc. would be interesting to have - something similar to the feature we have in Space Marine 2.

++ Introducing a second playable character with its own weapons and abilities, in combination with a branching campaign, allows for replayability. Furthermore, the enemies are no longer HP sponges and not every third room is a purge encounter, which enables faster progression and contributes to a more fluid gaming experience.
And I appreciate the fact that most cultists are killed with just one bolter shot; it pays respect to the technical background of the weapon. Blessed be this holy weapon, thus do I stir you into activation. May we serve the Great Maker as one, as I direct you in the destruction of his foes.
o Dear developers, why am I playing as one of the Imperial poster boys from Ultramar once more? Other chapters need more attention! I am starting to believe that Games Workshop is holding you hostage with a locally placed Kommissar. Steel yourself and remember: It is better to die for the Emperor, by providing us with a protagonist from a different chapter, than to live for yourself.
- The only nitpick I have is with the biological traps in some of the jungle maps and my inability to destroy them. Following the codex in proper Space Marine fashion, I just stomped through. For, prayer cleanses the soul, pain cleanses the body.
Summary:
The first instalment was already a solid FPS, and I can assure you, dear reader, that this second title improves upon the formula, once again capturing the spirit of the WH40K universe. And to repeat myself from my first review, throwing insults at minions of the ruinous powers while my chainsword works itself through their corrupted shells still puts a smile on my face.

Most of the criticisms of the first game have been addressed and the game really benefits from it. While it is hard to not feel a like this game could have gone further to separate itself, this is a really solid time and well worth the price for most fans of classic FPS games.

Sliding around and slowing time as Nyra has been super satisfying and the weapon variety has been a treat. I'm personally fond of the plasma pistol.
I haven't played as Malum yet but if he's even remotely similar to how he played in the first game I imagine he will be fantastic!
The enemies are fantastic though I haven't fought against Nurgle or Tzeentch so maybe my tune will change. The aspiring champion is still terrifying (good going Auroch) and basically every world eater and Khorne daemon fills me with dread as they rip my skull clean from my skin.
So in summary worth every penny!

I don't often stick with this genre, but this hits EVERY SINGLE NOTE
I mostly play games for the environment, story, setting, etc., and I can adapt to everything else like difficulty and mechanics if all that is good enough; I love 40k, and the combat in this feels EXTREMELY satisfying and fluid, like you ARE the Sister Celestian or the Ultramarine. The boltgun FEELS like a boltgun even on the highest difficulty. Power sword FEELS like a power sword. It always hits hard. You move like an army of one should move.
The allied NPC troops are oddly badass, too. I noticed they have roles like snipers as well. Only seen Krieg so far; hope there's others as well.
Enemy variety has been cool as well. Plenty of Chaos factions, including undivided. They even work differently.
And level variety as well. Seen puzzle-like levels that AREN'T obnoxious and still feel like shooters, seen straight-up "walk through this base and kill everything in your way" levels. All great. Haven't had a bad thing to say yet.
Great environment, great gameplay, great feel as a player, everything's well-connected.
I also appreciate that the secrets vary greatly in what they're like, where and how they may be found, and that they can be highly practical boons for the level as well.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\ti'm having a ton of fun. the friction i had in boltgun 1 seems to be gone in boltgun 2 - map design is significantly improved, i don't feel like the enemies are pure bullet soaks (looking at you, boltgun 1 plague frog), and enemy variety is satisfactory with different chaos factions present and numerous unique enemies within each faction. I can tell a lot of time and energy went into getting the representation of the factions and their lore done well, and as a 40k enjoyer, I really appreciate that.
tl;dr: seems like Auroch took what made boltgun 1 a fun game and just scaled it up. love to see it!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
