\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAs others have already said in their review, the game is a bit unpolished on launch, but for me personally I haven't had any issues with crashing, bugs, or queues, but I have had somewhat disappointing performance in-game. My main issue is with the developers' vision and the gameplay.
At the moment, this is not really a Vietnam war game. The two factions are far too similar in playstyle. The only real difference is that one side has AKs and Tunnels and the other has M16s and Helicopters. Oddly, the US forces camouflage better on most maps than the Vietnamese. Where are the traps? Why do the Vietnamese have the same amount of air support and tanks available to them as the almighty US military? Shouldn't the US at least have a Cobra or Huey Gunship? The Vietnamese even have their own flamethrower! There is no tunnel combat, as they are basically just fast travel hubs. Could the developers seriously not have come up with more unique ways to differentiate the factions or add a semblance of the asymmetry the war was famous for?
Some of the game modes are a total joke. The Conquest mode essentially makes the game feel like 5 separate 10v10s rather than a 50v50 match. All of the game modes revolve around controlling territory on the map, nothing creative or new that fits the Vietnam war setting better.
The progression system is also a bit of a pain in the ass. Instead of unlocking different loadouts, you instead have to unlock slots and carry capacity to have more than just a primary weapon and a bandage/grenade at level 1. Meanwhile, a max level role has 3x the slots and carry capacity which seems like too much of a gap to me. Some classes like grenadier or engineer are forced to play several matches as just basic infantry to unlock the ability to carry an assault rifle and rocket launcher for example.
There are not many weapon options either. No M14, no different AK types, no grease gun, no PPSh, only one shotgun and machine gun for each faction and no ammo selection like slugs for shotguns or big belts of MGs. All of these weapons and options were present in Rising Storm 2. Sure, the game is brand new and they will probably add more options, but I doubt that they would eventually double or triple the weapon variety a few years from now to match Rising Storm 2.
The tank gameplay is somehow more of a joke than in the WW2 version. My gunner probably had to put 10 AP shells into the same part of the hull to destroy an enemy tank at point blank. It was basically just two civil war ironclads tickling each other to death. Also there is again no depth to the tank combat, no weak spots or modules you can meaningfully disable, it's basically just whoever can put 10 AP rounds into the other tank's center mass first.
Naturally the game is still fun and has similar gunplay and pacing to HLL WW2 which I enjoyed a lot, but it just doesn't really fit the title of a Vietnam game. Unfortunately these mostly seem to be core design issues so I doubt that the game will ever feel like something other than a quick reskin of the WW2 version with assault rifles in a jungle setting. I'll probably stick to Rising Storm 2 for now until this game has a lot of reworks and a change of direction.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

After waiting for this game with genuine excitement, I honestly cannot believe this is being sold as a finished product. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam feels like an unfinished early-access build with a Vietnam skin slapped on top of it.
The technical state is embarrassing. Performance is inconsistent, animations and movement feel clumsy, textures and objects visibly pop into existence, and the server browser is a frustrating mess. Trying to join a match can turn into an endless cycle of full servers, misleading empty slots, VIP restrictions, queues, and connection errors. A multiplayer-only game should at least make it easy to actually play multiplayer.
Even worse, the game completely fails to capture the atmosphere of the Vietnam War. The weapons sound weak, explosions have no weight, the jungle feels artificial and strangely lifeless, and the battlefield often sounds almost empty. There is very little sense that a large-scale war is taking place around you. Older Vietnam games, especially Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, deliver far better audio, tension, and immersion despite being many years older.
The controller aim assist is another terrible decision. In a tactical shooter where positioning, concealment, and spotting are supposed to matter, allowing players to receive assistance that can detect or snap toward enemies hidden in vegetation completely undermines the experience. What is the point of carefully using the jungle for cover when another player can simply look near your position and receive help from the game?
This does not feel like a meaningful evolution of Hell Let Loose. It feels like a rushed, poorly optimized reskin with a few new vehicles and mechanics added to justify selling it as a separate product. The graphics may occasionally look modern, but almost everything underneath them feels unfinished, generic, and lacking impact.

But, giving controllers aim assist SO strong you can use your rifle as a dousing rod in a game where 90% of the combat is based on concealment has to be the absolute most insane decision I've seen in years.

Badly disappointed with Hell Let Loose: Vietnam.
At this point, the game honestly feels like a spit in the face of long-time HLL players.
For some completely unknown reason, the developers decided that almost everybody should run around with laser-beam full-auto assault rifles. The M16 and the AK-pattern rifle are ridiculously easy to control, even at ranges where full-auto fire should be a terrible idea.
And that completely destroys one of the things I liked about the original HLL: learning the weapons and adapting your playstyle to their strengths and weaknesses.
In Vietnam? Why bother?
Why would I want an SMG or shotgun for close-range fighting when my standard assault rifle is already excellent at close range?
Why would I want a semi-auto rifle when the standard AR has good damage, a large magazine and extremely controllable full-auto fire?
Hell, they didn't even include iconic weapons like the SKS or M14, which makes the weapon selection feel even more disappointing.
There should be an actual trade-off between the rifles.
Instead, both basically feel like laser guns.
I've seen people saying they only switch to semi-auto when they're on their last magazine — and that pretty much sums up the problem. If your game has a fire-mode selector but there is almost no gameplay reason to ever use semi-auto, your gunplay balance is broken.
It also kills progression for me. In the original HLL, unlocking another weapon could genuinely change how a class played. Here I look at the unlocks and think: why would I even bother? My starting rifle already does almost everything extremely well.
The most frustrating part is that HLL Vietnam had enormous potential. Vietnam should be an amazing setting for HLL: asymmetric weapons, brutal close-range fights, difficult visibility, very different engagement distances and distinct weapon characteristics.
Instead, one of the core parts of the game — the gunplay — feels dumbed down.
The one thing I genuinely enjoy are the maps. They look fantastic and the atmosphere can be excellent.
Unfortunately, pretty scenery isn't enough to save the game when shooting people is 90% of what you're doing.
Coming from 650+ hours of HLL WW2, this is a massive disappointment.
Make full-auto actually difficult to control. Give semi-auto a purpose. Give different weapon types a reason to exist. Bring back the weapon-learning curve that made HLL satisfying in the first place.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

In a setting like the dense jungles of Vietnam, where concealment is a constant... Players rely on audio cues to tell where the enemy is. Unfortunately, all audio is a buggy mess. Even when the audio isn't bugged, the sounds themselves are awful. The audio as a whole is a complete and utter failure.
Graphics are good in close proximity... But draw distance is atrocious and there is a lot of pop-in. You may think you're hiding inside of a bush, or in tall grass... But if the enemy is at a distance, it can appear as if you're in the wide open. This leads to a lot of confusion about how someone saw you. Furthermore, due to the render distance, objects don't load in. So when I'm in a tank, I find myself combatting invisible walls and structures.
Hell Let Loose became popular because it was a mil-sim lite with underlying RTS elements. This created a niche where players could immediately contribute, get significantly better over time, all while encouraging team work and coordination. Each side felt like they had, in their own way, an even way of winning the match. In Vietnam, faction balance was an afterthought. The most glaring example is the NVA receiving teleportation tunnels. Did the NVA win in real life? Yes. Does having one side having a significant advantage make for a good PvP video game? Absolutely not.
From an outsider's perspective, it appears as if the development team doesn't know what direction they want the game to go in. In some aspects, it looks like they wanted to develop a single player game with historical accuracy. Other times, they introduce arcade-like game modes seen in other popular FPS titles. All along the way, they forgot to play and understand their own game... evidenced by the forgotten quality of life features (as simple as certain map markers) that were in the original.
I can go on and on about the problems. This review may get changed in the future, but there is a ton that needs fixed. Hopefully the studio takes the title's reviews seriously and reevaluates their approach in managing this franchise.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As someone else also noted: the player base is down from 30k to 8k in 2 weeks.

- Do you want to be part of an Early Access game, or game that is still in Beta state that is lying about being a completed game.
I really enjoy playing this game, it's a lot of fun, but I can't say that it was ready at launch.
- Do you like Hell Let Loose (original) and Arma? Then boy do I have some snake oil to sell you!
- Bullets can't go through chain link fences.
- Mounting an MG is janky as all heck.
- This game comes complete with: unbalanced weapons systems, ever wish you gun took 6 shots to kill someone but the enemy gun takes 2; just pickup an M16 and your wish is my command.
- Have you ever wanted to be running though jungle cover that is completely neutralized by controller players having aim assist.
- - If you are using a controller all you have to do is drag you aim through the bushes. If someone is hiding and completely obscured your aim-assist will slow down near them. Allowing you to narrow down where enemies are.
- First think you have to do is set you draw detail to 0, and your draw distance to max. I seriously don't know why this is even an option. We learned this in the first game.
- This game is a Grade A example of what happens when you rush a game to launch instead of taking 2 more months to finish it.
- Do you enjoy being forced to play in cross-platform lobbies because the company that released it didn't create "default - non-cross-platform lobbies" this is the game for you.
- - No shade on console players, but most of them don't have mics, don't have time and are looking for a more relaxed experience, I'm glad that they can enjoy this game. But there should be dedicated console and PC lobbies.
- Do you want to fly helicopters in 'Nam but have limited to no ability to change their controls.
- - Did we learn nothing from any other game that has helicopters in it?
- How do you feel about spending 5 hours in game, to level up a role so that you can actually take out a tank, only to be face with the fact that no one else has spent 5 hours leveling up that same role, and you don't have enough rounds to destroy the tank yourself?
- I don't think Easy Anti-Cheat has ever worked.
- What is that hit detection on the flamethrower, Jesus.
- No traps, what kind of decision is that... it's like "Ready or Not" removing all the gore because of Consoles, boohoo. Looking at you Australia.
Pros:
- No DLC that gives an unfair advantage: looking at you EA/CoD.
- It's a great concept for a game
- I might have PTSD from this
- My K/D is through the roof, and I love the MG's
- There are helicopters
- The asymmetry is a fun element
- They finally fixed flares not permanently being bugged on the map.
TLDR; While I do wish this game to be successful, ultimately after the release of WARDOGS. I'm not sure I'll come back to this. I'm not refunding the game, because I expect next year, 50% of these issues will be addressed, either that or this will be dead.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've been playing this since it released and am about 23 hours into it. I've been having a blast with this game and love it, and I look forward to seeing it grow over time.
The map design feels good and other little things, and playing with friends has been a great time. However, currently I cannot play the game, nor can one of my friends. The latest patch broke the game for me and him, causing our games to crash all the time. I cant even get 20 minutes into a game now, when I was playing for 6 hours straight the other day no problem.
Additionally, the guns suck. The NVA is just more fun to play than the Americans because the NVA has both an SMG and bolt action rifle that you can use instead of the AK, while the Americans get an M16, then an M16 with a bayonet, and then an M16 with an M203. It makes it really boring to play as the Americans. I also am disappointed, because there are so many unique weapons from the Vietnam war that to see they could have chosen from, and all they did was give us an M16. However, even with the SMG and bolt action rifle the NVA have, the guns still feel weak. Every gun in the game feels like it takes way too long to kill. The M16 and AK at times have taken me 3-4 shots to kill someone, and the Mosin, the bolt action rifle that in any other game would be a 1 hit kill, often only wounds people. The guns need some major work to make this game better.
Now onto one of the biggest oversights in my opinion - bullet penetration. There is none. I have shot a guy through a wooden fence made of sticks with giant holes in it a foot away and the bullets didn't penetrate. Same with the thatch huts, which is a problem because they all have gaps, so you can SEE the enemy in those huts, but you can't hit them. Even bamboo stalks in the forest stop bullets,. There's been multiple times where I have shot someone with a sniper rifle and they were taking "cover" behind a single bamboo stalk, and it stopped my bullet.
The worst part of this, is it includes helicopter windshields. Helicopters right now are nigh unkillable. You can shoot the door gunners out sure, and I guess that makes it a little better? But you better have a Jamsheed on your team with an RPG or one of the only machine gunners that's unlocked AA guns and knows how to use them, or you aren't killing a helicopter. I saw one land right in front of me, unloaded 30 rounds directly into the glass in front of the pilot, and he wasn't even phased. No damage, nothing. It's annoying, because those pilots use that immunity to hover above the battlefield and call out locations with no risk. It ruins a large part of the game.
I really want to recommend this game, and honestly, in it's current shape, I would. I've been having a good time even with it being very unfinished and I see the potential. But I can't possibly recommend a game I can't even play because the latest "hotfix" did nothing for me and my friend except break it so bad I can't even play 1 game. Not even an RPG until you grind grenadier? I have to run a pistol if I want to carry mere *AT mines* as Engy? If I want to resupply explosives, I have to run the Machine Gunner role... Without a machine gun until I level up the class to gain "weight"? $*#k off.

Being forced to play against console players who's graphics are so low that laying a bush doesn't matter + them having their aim assist allowing them to simply snap at you when in a bush is just an absolute shame.
You should not be forced to play with or against consoles, i don't know who ever wanted this but it makes little to no sense.
This game is not completely finished, they missed out on a lot of proper testing and just released, probably because of the usual investors being absolute impatient horribly pieces of trash as the usually are.
