It's taken some steps in the direction of realism compared to prior games, which you'd think would make it more difficult to get into, but in reality I think makes a far smoother gaming experience on the whole. The series' games were very arcadey with the caveat that you die very quickly. When the teams were balanced, it was spectacular. But if a few players (or in some cases even a single player) were on a skill level above the rest of the lobby, they would dominate the game and it wouldn't be very fun, especially for more casual or newer folk. Verdun and Tannenberg worked out because they're very arcadey to begin with, but it was always a crapshoot trying to introduce friends to Isonzo, the game where the studio began taking some steps towards focusing on realism.

Gallipoli's jumps in the direction of realism actually end up evening out the playing field enough that it's much more difficult to snipe people across the map or go on massive killstreaks on your own, and it highlights ways to contribute to the team aside from just making kills. I'm actually looking forward to bringing friends onto this game because I know they'll feel like they can contribute and have a good time. The old games were very much run, point-and-shoot. Gallipoli has some weight to movement and depth to gunplay.

Other misc points: Isonzo's classes suffered from having several playstyles and perks dominate them, and had some odd combinations. Gallipoli works that out by streamlining roles into additional classes that have a purpose and are able to focus on that purpose better, while the kit system still allows for some versatility. Graphics are great. Music is amazing and thematic. Customization is improved a lot and I greatly enjoy the subfactions. Voice lines are fun, and animations are good. Gun models are rather close, but I got used to it quickly and don't mind it at all. I can see the purpose. AI feels better than prior games (not that that's a terribly high bar), though I can't say I've had much experience yet. AI will play officer and use call-ins now.

Love it on the whole, I literally can't go back to the prior games after this. I just find myself wishing they were more like Gallipoli.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wish I could recommend this. But so much of the game is bizarrely or poorly designed compared to earlier iterations of the same franchise that I really don't know how it came out like this.

There are far too many classes and several of the glasses exacerbate the problems I have with the game. There is no reason to play a rifleman: you can't even spawn on your teammates. In exchange you get a slightly reduced weapon sway - so play a Stretcher Bearer or Ammo Holder, because they're riflemen with a much more useful gimmick and they can spawn on their teammates. This sounds like a minor detail but what really happens is people play riflemen and then refuse to play aggressively because it takes an age to get anywhere as it due to the limited spawns.

Bombers. This is more a personal gripe than something I think is poorly designed. But who came up with the idea of having multiple players able to play a class with multiple grenades, the same rifle as the rifleman (or PISTOLS, yay!) and the ability to stun willy-nilly due to the possible grenade spam?

Engineer and Spotter are such circumstantial roles now beholden to their utility kit. Sounds cool right? Right, well, half of the Engis and Spotters you see won't play with their utility kit anyway. You have two niche roles who once again - in the Signaller and Saboteur Kit can get pistols.

The amount of pistols turns a WW1 shooter into a WW2 one. If we had less classes that were more general you could more precisely link them to certain classes, but the amount of kits on multiple classes that allow pistol use turns them from a specialist weapon that helps you identify a class into a lovely game of pistol abuse.

This wouldn't be a problem if damage values weren't as rigid as previous entries but they are, so dozens of players will run around with pistols in a WW1 game and liberally miss 5/6 rounds in the time it takes for a rifle to fire two. Great. Still a one hit kill at 90% of the distances you fight at in Gallipoli.

This brings me to another point: customisation is a mess. Not in a 'there's no options' or 'this is ahistorical' way, no. Instead I mean it in an identification way, across classes. Most classes can be made visually identical which may be accurate but is visually useless. Whilst in Izonso you could tell roughly what the enemy may be using based on your knowledge of the class (if required, such as Ice Pick Mountaineers). In Gallipoli everyone on a team can dress identically - cool and all - which causes a problem with identifying what the hell you're up against.

This may be a less important point for some people, but readability is important in my opinion. Things being 1HKO means you need to be able to tell at a glance what your opponent may do: be it throw grenades; pull out a bayonet sword and charge or pistol whip you. But with the complete lack of readability and ready abundance of pistols, the only people you're going to be identifying are officers. Who - rightfully, in their case - have pistols.

Several of the maps have designs so aggressively bad that I question the intent behind them. Anzac Cove may be historically accurate in its unfairness, but being able to identify on the first time that I play that map that it was going to be a miserable experience every-time for the attacker in the initial phase is ridiculous. Best advice when you see the spawns are boats? Don't spawn. Let the AI rowers and other players get a beach spawn unless you want to be farmed by a HMG that you can barely see.

Whilst Anzac Cove and the other one (which I forget, it is slightly better) are definitely the stand outs for 'gods what is this design', several other levels have areas that are so comedically either pro-defender or pro-attacker that once the position is lost you may as well just withdraw rather than counter attack.

My last negative point is in regards to the actual gameplay, which in my opinion is a massive downgrade from Izonso and Tannenberg. Whilst I do not dislike it as much as I used to, it is far less smooth and enjoyable to use due to a severely slowed down rifle chamber and more sluggish aim. You'll also spend most of your games either stunned; panicked or being suppressed. None of these are problems on their own, but the sheer amount of it is so excessive that most of the time you'll not be able to aim reliably anyway. Oh, unless you don't go onto the point because you don't want to ruin your unrecorded K/D.

Positives are that the game is visually beautiful and the guns sound weighty; HMGs and LMGs are vastly superior to the lasers of death from Izonso; Officers seem to actually get a fun unique kit to play with to be relevant even if Airburst makes me want to cry; the addition of a downed state is subtle enough to not overwrite the lethality of the era and I generally think the main game mode is a slight improvement over Izonso.

But if I was to weigh everything together, I'd say get Izonso and wait until Gallipoli's flaws are not as aggressively prominent.

I'm a long time player, fan and supporter of the WWI series that Gallipoli is associated with. I have more than six hundred hours in Verdun, and I bought and played Tannenberg and Izonso when they released. I don't have it out for the developers- I quite like them- and I'm not entering into this game wishing it to be something it's not. New game, new expectations.

I like the maps, they're quite nice looking and as varied as you can get on a World War One battlefield. I like the music and the voice lines are very great. The variety of character design and models are all really fantastic and I had quite a lot of fun figuring out which over sized and properly English mustache I should go with for my model.

That.. astonishingly, is about all I have found to be enjoyable in my experience thus far.

The gunplay is horrendous. I can hazard a guess as to why- to keep a few very skilled players from wiping out whole lobbies and ruining the fun for everyone else. That was a serious problem back in the day of Verdun speaking as someone who was decidedly not one of the "few very skilled players". But there has to be some level of improvement on how hit registration works- as I watch roughly a third of my shots miss someone who I have dead to rights. And there needs to be some level of refinement in terms of default gunsway. I should not aim down sights whilst perfectly unhindered by statuses, and have to fight against my own rifle to line up anywhere near a target.

The maps are pretty. Or, I should say the maps are neat. It's quite neat to go see historical sites for battlefields; and given my familiarity to the work that has gone on in other games for maps designed I can appreciate the level of work that has taken place. Neat, but not fun. I do not have fun charging the same barbed wire line six lifes in a row only to be forced with a decision of "do I want to post up to shoot the enemy and live" or "do I want to cut the wire to progress the map, die and fail". Every time. Try playing Kut and attempt- on either side- to actually end the match and get back to me if that felt like a fun experience after the fourth time playing it.

I think my core point of frustration is pivoting from a tug of war style gameplay and therefore map design, to a linear path forward. I do not find these manner of maps and game modes to be enjoyable. They devolve into nothing but chokepoints filled with machineguns and explosive fire. Has been in every first person shooter I've ever played, and it is in Gallipoli too. There's no thinking, no planning, no strategy, no cooperation, no higher level thought into other than I can make a choice between two types of experiences. Either I can "play the objective", where I actually attempt to win, but wind up on my own the majority of the time and dying without accomplishing anything. Or I can sit in one spot and farm kills as everyone who devotes themself to the former line of thought dies to the latter.

It is not fun, for me. Therefore Gallipoli is not fun for me. Maybe if the maps weren't atrocious to get through. Maybe if the guns weren't a nightmare to use. Maybe if the spawn system promoted any manner of squad or team play. Maybe, all sorts of things. But at the end of the day it's just not fun, so I cannot in good conscious and faith give this game a recommendation that I'd say "Yeah, buy a copy and let's squad up. It'll be a fun time. I had an absolute blast!."

Will I keep playing it solo? Probably for a while. Probably park it and check back in, in 3-7 months to see if anything has gotten more enjoyable. But given how this was a one-to-one copy of Isonzo I really don't expect it to.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tWhile I am a huge fan of the previous games in the series I cannot recommend this game in its current form. It has added many new and good features from the previous titles, yet it falls short in others, and has many problems.

I do like many of the additions to the game, however I am going to focus on the negatives due to how bad they make the game over the previous titles. I have hundreds of hours in Isonzo, Tannenberg and Verdun combined. I adored those titles so this is not a review of pure hate. I want to like this game and see it improve.

Firstly, the hit registration is atrocious. I have shot at enemies, point blank while aiming down sights, only to get a 'supressed' hit marker multiple times. At first I thought I was just terrible, but after playing for a while it's definitely an issue with the game. Had me gaslighting myself for the first few hours. But it is genuinely the worst hit reg out of any game I've ever played.

Pistols are incredibly OP. The worst in the series. In the other games they're quite balanced, but even at a far distance they'll down you and can be an immediate kill up close. So incredibly OP. Due to this in CQB if you come across an enemy with one your only hope is to hip fire and pray you hit.

There's also now a bizarre mini game to speed up building wire/MG/anything. Super unnecessary and annoying. Why even add that in an FPS that is clearly trying to make itself more realistic???

There's no smoke. None. Your only hope is the sand the artillery kicks up shielding your advance. Outside of that good luck advancing on a machine gun. You're f@ckd.

They've also added a 'panic' feature, which activates whenever bullets or shells land nearby or whenever you stub your toe, making your rifle shake uncontrollably. Clearly added to make suppression a bigger part of the game and to make 'supportive fire' more important for your teammates. Saying this, it seems to activate even if you are a decent distance from the incoming rounds, and especially if a machine gun is firing on your position, so good luck being able to return fire. It just makes the game incredibly tedious. In theory a cool feature, in practice it's atrocious for a shooter. ESPECIALLY in a game where there's constant rounds and artillery coming in. Isn't that meant to be the WHOLE part of the series???

I managed to bizarrely spawn in the enemy HQ a couple times while my squad were pushing up near it, behind multiple enemies. I was able to come up straight from behind them and bayonet 4 of them taking their HQ, before being 1 shot by a pistol - of course!

Lastly I want to touch on cross-play. My friend bought the game with me (he's on PS5) and there is no way for me to add him as a friend at all. We have to find a small enough game that's identifiable in order to join each other. Realistically what is the point in having cross-play if you can't play with your mates on console? It just adds easier to kill players for those on PC as they get a very 'minor' aim assist. So minor I don't even think there's a point to having it.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really wanted to like Gallipoli. I loved Isonzo, and was genuinely excited for this one as it takes place in my country. Unfortunately, in its current state, I can’t recommend it. There are some good ideas here. The lighting and atmosphere are excellent, the new downed system is a nice addition, and the suppression/panic mechanics have potential. When everything works, the game can create some great WW1 moments. The problem is that too much gets in the way.

Performance and polish are the biggest issues. Despite delays intended to fix critical bugs, the game still has severe stuttering, desync, awful hit registration and bizarre rendering problems. Enemies, weapons and animations can appear late, teleport or simply fail to render. Desync can make it feel like enemies are playing a second ahead of you.

The gunplay is also a major step backward from Isonzo. Rifles there felt accurate, responsive and satisfying. Here, excessive sway, slow ADS, unreliable sights and inconsistent hit registration make them frustrating to use. Pistols feel disproportionately strong, making close-range running and gunning more effective than actually using rifles. I acknowledge that pistols were op during ww1 but this is too much.

Suppression takes this even further. Being under fire should make aiming difficult, but the current system can make your weapon sway uncontrollably from a single nearby shot. Combined with poor hit registration, you often feel like you're fighting the mechanics instead of the enemy. The spotting and suppression UI also hurts the immersion. Getting points can effectively tell you where an unseen enemy is, while giant red markers make the game feel more arcade-like than the series' usual authentic WW1 experience.

Maps and balance aren't much better. Map design is poorer. Some areas have almost no cover, chokepoints encourage camping, and attacking can feel unnecessarily punishing. Constant artillery and explosions become exhausting rather than immersive, while the lack of useful smoke makes crossing open ground extremely frustrating.

Progression and class design also feel weaker than Isonzo, particularly the Officer role. There's simply less to work toward and fewer meaningful moments where good call-ins can change a battle.

Overall, Gallipoli feels less like an evolution of Isonzo and more like a step backward. There are good ideas underneath it, but right now they're buried under technical problems, frustrating gunplay, excessive suppression, weak balance and questionable design choices. I hope the developers can turn it around, because the foundation is there. But for now, I'd recommend sticking with Isonzo and waiting for Gallipoli to receive some serious improvements. I might even refund it.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI genuinely applaud the developers' approach to realism in this game. The gameplay is a lovely balance of realism whilst still staying exciting enough to be engaging. Needless to say this won't be for everyone. I've heard people say the following:

"Movement is too slow"- video games have done irreparable damage to gamers' perception of how fast people actually move. In this game you move closer to how fast you would actually move (it's still WAY faster and further than real life but it's closer, which feels more immersive)

"Grenades are too strong"- grenades ARE too strong irl. You would never push a trench or room without chucking a grenade in first.

"The weapons sway too much"- do you think soldiers ever ran up a steep cliff, whilst being shot at, adrenaline coursing through their veins, then had hands that weren't shaking? This is even emphasised more when under heavy fire. I love this because it means you can't just run in an one tap everyone with perfect aim- your soldier reacts to what is going on around him. Rush in to 5 enemies and start taking fire? He starts to panic and his aim becomes worse. You CAN rush in and sometimes you have to but it's more to catch enemies off guard and you also accept your aim will be worse.

"the maps are unbalanced"- the maps are based on the real life locations- you feel like you are fighting in the real world- finding cover where you can, rather than being placed in a sandbox handcrafted by a level designer to give you cover here there and everywhere.

This game is DEFINITELY frustrating at time. You die to a grenade you couldn't hear it drop, you charge over a hill just to miss your shot and die because your aim was shaking from all the suppressing fire, you die to random artillery despite lying down in a trench. But that's how a lot of people would have died- war isn't fair and balanced and I'm glad the devs haven't (yet) caved to get rid of these things to favour balance over realism.

My own gripes:

-This game DESPERATELY needs local VOIP. Seeing a guy right next to you and not being able to talk to him other than in team or squad voice massively ruins immersion- and hurts teamplay.
-NOBODY uses the voice chat at all. I don't know how to promote this but it is essential to teamplay and the heath of the game.
-People don't work together. Again, not sure the best way to promote this but it would be great if there were something to incentivise teamwork.
-Ammo for artillery/heavy machinegun is too forgiving. If you have the ammo class you can just sit on artillery indefinitely and spam. Maybe some people have to bring heavy machinegun/artillery ammo from HQ to the frontlines rather than it just being an equippable item for one class, that sort of thing.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI feel like this is a step back from Isonzo. I'm not having as much fun with this game compared to the previous titles. I think this may be the result of the Officer class (which is my favorite) feeling kinda dull now. They increased the amount of Officer slots per team by 3 but you have dramatically less call-in types. You can call in a large radial bombardment or a linear airstrike... that's it... In most scenarios you just use them on cooldown since they're very strong... and it's just kinda boring. You can put down spawn points as an attacker which is nice but something is just missing from the experience compared to Isonzo. It's really a spectacle in Isonzo when your team or the enemy team drops a big call-in on the point and successfully caps or defends at the last minute. These moment's have felt lacking or entirely absent from the matches I've played in Gallipoli. Gallipoli feels "flat" and almost quiet in a weird way. I've yet to have an "Oh ♥♥♥♥" moment like I've had in Isonzo.

Also I've experienced very VERY bad desync issues that are genuinely insanely frustrating. I'm constantly being killed by enemies the frame they appear on my screen from behind corners or various angles or even dying many frames before they even turn the corner. I've died many times to players who aren't even visibly looking in my direction. It's like everyone is playing 1-2 second in the future. I have a wired fiber internet with 40-60ms ping to the servers. It's completely unacceptable for it to feel THIS bad to play. I do not remember Isonzo being this egregious with the desync.

I'm also not really enjoying the way the weapons have been rebalanced in this game compared to Isonzo. They're extremely inaccurate now and have a ton of sway. I've experienced several moments where I'm missing shots that look like they should absolutely land and also hitting shots that are off aim. It feels like they added some kind of "bloom" like in certain Battlefield games where weapons have randomized bullet spread patterns at range. I guess this could also be from the insane levels of desync... These experiences while aiming are not because of suppression mechanics just to be clear. I actually like the suppression mechanics in this game which affect aim, reload speed, etc. I just wish the weapons felt good when you weren't suppressed...

I think there's a balance issue with Attacking vs Defending. Defending feels very hard and I lose more while Defending and win more while Attacking. Not sure what to do about this but I think some adjustments are needed.

I think at a bare minimum for me to recommend this game the devs need to address the desync problems. I can accept some of the changes compared to Isonzo but if the game just feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to play I really can't convince myself to jump in. If I could I would refund this game right now specifically because of the desync issues I've experienced.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI’ve been a huge fan of this series of WW1 games ever since Tannenberg, through Isonzo, and now Gallipoli.
There’s something different here compared to other shooters, in these the immersion is total, with the huge amount of bombardments and screams, the level of historical realism is incredible, you can tell the developers are passionate about history. The fact that you’re in a war and nobody cares if you’ve died five times in a row or are playing badly, it’s not a toxic 5v5 team match, it’s 25v25, it’s almost impossible for anyone to blame you, and losing doesn’t feel particularly frustrating to me, cause I enjoy the gameplay. Also, as I’m from Latin America, unlike with other FPS games, I can play on the US server with a ping of 150/200 without any issues, as it’s a slower-paced game, full of bolt-action rifles.
Moving on to Gallipoli, it’s possibly one of the releases that’s received the most negative feedback, things like the sluggish, clunkier movement, changes to the classes, the hand shaking when overwhelmed by enemy fire, or simply the fact that it doesn’t feel like a huge improvement on its predecessor, Isonzo.
To be honest, I can’t really judge that yet, but I am enjoying my games of Gallipoli, and I remember that Isonzo also needed a bit of time, updates and so on after its launch. Even if they don’t label it as EA, the devs work in a similar way, continuing development according to a roadmap over several years.
If you’re unsure, you could go for Isonzo, which is heavily discounted, whilst if you’re a demanding gamer, already familiar with the franchise, it might be better to wait until they’ve polished it up a bit.

The Machinegun changes are fantastic, but I do really wish people would bring you ammo more often. The newer officer support call-ins, like shrapnel, look great. I have seen a couple instances of dubious net-code like minor teleportation and bad hit registration, but that was only a few times in 11 hours of play and I haven't seen it in a while.
