\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe setting is incredible, the shells are insanely cool, the gunplay is peak, but it is an extraction shooter. The gaming community is witnessing a strange trend. Extraction shooters are being released at a rate not seen before and some people are beginning to realize something. People ruin games. The evidence of this is being demonstrated not only in marathon but also in Arc. Arc has been infected with cheaters the same as Tarkov. The only reason Marathon isn't infested is because it doesn't have enough players for anyone to care.
This game should have never been an extraction shooter. At least not one that includes pvp. There isn't a cheating problem in this game, there is a skill discrepancy in this game. I have played casually since the server slam, mostly solos because none of my friends wanted to play Marathon. At first it was awesome, the vibes were desolate and dystopian, I was invested in filling my stash to ascend to higher levels of gear. Now? The most I do is queue in as a free kit twice a week. Why? The top 1% of skilled players are being dropped into lobbies with casuals running free kits. Purple and gold geared players with 4 and 5 ticks of shield health that your inferior free gun has to chew through to even attempt to kill them. It's beyond unfair. The saddest aspect of this is integrating SBMM would hurt the game even more because queue times would get even longer. Thus the downward spiral this game is on.
Over the past couple months they have attempted to attract casual PvE players with a sad attempt at a roguelite mode called Vault Breakers. Solve the puzzles, open the vaults, and retrieve a weird immersion breaking currency to upgrade the kit you would bring in. You did not get to keep the gear you found. WHICH IS INSANE. What difference would it have made? The sweats already have a stash filled with purples and golds. Would it have been that terrible if we would have been able to keep the gear and actually stand a chance against the 1%? We still invested hours into learning Cryo Archive, a beautiful labyrinth, to be able to find anything in the mode. The cherry on top? It was "experimental" and they removed it. Now the game is back to catering to the top skilled players who are playing a mini battle royale while the rest of us are playing shell death simulator. You might as well have an audio track of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka screaming, "IT'S ALL THERE, BLACK AND WHITE, CLEAR AS CRYSTAL! YOU GET NOTHING! YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY SIR!"
This game is the slow, sad death of Bungie. I expect a End Of Service statement in the following months. Do not waste your time or your money.

I have hundreds of hours in Escape from Tarkov before it came over to steam. I like Extraction Shooters but Marathon is a half-baked one at best, a overly punishing one at worst. For me, it actually felt more punishing to play than Tarkov at times.

Here is how it works: Low skilled players get put into lobbies with high skilled, they quit because they had little to no chance of winning. Mid skilled players queue into high skilled lobbies, they persevere longer than others but still end up quitting. The bottom totem pole of players continues to get kicked out like this until all that is left are the highly skilled. That number continues to dwindle because there will be players who realize they can't dunk on everyone else anymore and the only lobbies that are left are pure sweatfests.
EDIT 3: Some of these players will claim that Gold gear doesn't matter. On paper, sure. Except the map where you can acquire that gear has the highest skill requirement out of anything in the game. Not only do you have to solve vault puzzles, you also have to potentially contend with the best of the best while doing so. A player who knows this, and encounters someone with gold shields, can accurately predict they are up against someone that is somewhere at the top of the totem pole.
EDIT 4: I realized why this is more punishing than Tarkov. Tarkov has silent extraction areas and the only alarms on the map are; 1. Scavs who fire at you. 2. PMC's who spot you, and fire at you. 3. Bosses who spot and fire at you. 4. You, when you take shots at the previous targets. Sure, looting makes noise, so does walking, those you can control. In Marathon, there are alarms around EVERY corner; 1. USEC who spot you. 2. Turrets that spot you. 3. Birds. 4. Ticks. 5. Several caches have literal alarms attached to them. 5. Doors that you need keys for (what's the point of the key if it still sets off an alarm?). 6. The shots you take. 7. Sprinting is hilariously loud. 8. Finally, activating the extraction beam. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's sad that this game is destined to die at this point. Despite all the hate it got at launch, I actually enjoyed it. The art, atmosphere, and most of all gunplay are all great. Unfortunately, it seems like they spent all their money on fancy cutscenes and advertising. The game launched without duos and now it's here as a rotating map modifier instead of an actual mode. The game only has three base maps (not counting the raid mode). This is not a casual extraction shooter like Arc Raiders. You die very fast. That would be fine, if it didn't clearly try to attract a mainstream audience. The quests suck and are so tedious and boring; even after the Season 2 changes. I honestly just feel very bored half the time. Same enemies, same maps, similar quests. Are extraction shooters just allergic to good progression? Well Marathon is apparently. The game has so few players right now, it takes 5+ minutes to find a match and it goes one of two ways. Either I play the whole match without ever seeing another player, or I instantly die without having a chance to engage in real gunfight. I really wish this game had succeeded, but considering the amount of money they put in it seems it's only a matter of time until they shutdown the servers since they clearly lost a lot of money on the game. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tMarathon has been a PR nightmare and quite a rollercoaster. Frankly, I would be lying if I said that I didn't enjoyed my time with this frantic and exciting extraction shooter. This was an impulse buy and went in blind with only a vague idea. I just kind of liked the trailers and wanted to give it a shot. Needless to say, Season 1 hooked me in with its well-crafted gameplay, unique visuals and superb sound design. The world seemed mysterious and the entire setting evokes such a compelling atmosphere. Marathon genuinely made me feel like I was exploring an abandoned colony that was the subject of an elusive and deadly incident. The controls are snappy, the guns feel great, the movement is smooth and the maps all had a unique flair. Admittedly, the onboarding process was rough but during the first season, everybody was equally in the dark and figuring the game out. You had tons of social interactions and there wasn't an established meta of sorts. It was just a refreshing shooter with intricate maps and an end-game that seemed nigh impossible to penetrate but yet so close. My point is that the momentum was strong and the game shaped up to be great with lots of great updates from the devs along with new game modes that seemed promising. Marathon was living rent free in my mind; it is addictive and build on a great foundation. Yet, I cannot for the life of me recommend this game to anyone at this point of time.
Despite my initial praise, the state of the game is absolutely abysmal with dwindling player counts and a lack of content. It's an absolutely frustrating and brutal experience that is made worse by developers lacking a coherent vision and direction in regards to the future of the game. Season 2 promised great additions but most of them were underwhelming with baffling design decisions to boot.
To explain, the remaining player base consists of highly competitive and dedicated individuals which will stomp you without remorse. The entire extraction premise is demanding by nature but as a new player, you won't stand a chance without spending a significant amount of time learning the ropes. There are plenty of mechanics, nuances and details which you need to adapt to in order to stand a chance. Usually the satisfaction of learning a new game is usually a motivational factor for me but Marathon does not give you enough opportunities as a newbie.
Matchmaking times are rather long with low player count and it's not unusual to end up in empty lobbies. After an excruciating wait, you start your run and get instantly deleted by some insane player. Your actual time and opportunity to gather experience is relatively short. In essence, you're back in the menu, lost your gear and barely stood a chance against veterans. The time it takes just to get back into the game is too long and honestly exhausting. Even if you're committed and possess an iron will, it's a rough experience. Season 1 still provided a natural sense of progression which made the learning process so much more accessible while still being challenging. That's gone now and even as an experienced player, the gameplay is absolutely relentless.

I've seen both sides of the coin and it can be exhilarating but it doesn't change the fact that it is mentally draining and requires tons of focus. The highs are truly high but I feel like I'm wasting most of my time after I've played these maps and modes for hours on end.
Remaining players have effectively figured out the best way to play (which is par for the course for such games). The aforementioned long queues, limited matchmaking, repetitive maps and amount of time required to jump into a game is so high compared to other shooters. It's a hard sell especially if you want to play this on a casual side. At some point, I felt like I was actively wasting my time.
In addition, the game is heavily designed around trios with the most exciting content being centred around this team composition. You either need to make random in-game friends or find an LFG community, this is not everyone's cup of tea. Naturally, you'll need to make even more of an effort to organize a party which adds to the overall burden of actually playing a decent run. Sure, there are solo options but this part of the game is absolutely neglected with skewed balancing and slower progression which is even more frustrating because the game feels fundamentally better to play in solo.
Furthermore, I don't believe that Marathon is a good extraction shooter either, it turned into a team-based battle royale with a weird inventory and economy tacked on. Planning your runs is trivial as there isn't much depth to preparing your kits. The scavenging is somewhat basic due to passive faction rewards, there isn't much to loot either. The biggest issue is that wiping an entire lobbies is the optimal way of playing. The best loot comes from players and you get the benefit of clearing the map at your leisure. There are different tiers of loot and different types of valuables but it's always clear what to pick up. The choices are always obvious and it removes the inventory aspect in a genre that focuses on extracting valuables. The meta progression and upgrades all feel shallow, you won't spend a lot of time tinkering with "builds". You essentially stick with the same stuff and loadout most of the time. Most modifiers and weapon upgrades feel negligible with very situational perks.
What irks me so much is that the devs are still experimenting with the core premise of the game which is not a sign of confidence. Most recent changes and updates completely dropped the ball. Beloved game modes emerge and then are taken away despite being heavily requested. Some modes and endgame maps are time gated which is just infuriating. Marathon suffers from an identity crisis that tries to cater towards casual and hardcore sweats alike. The aforementioned lack of direction feels so palpable.
As a reference, Bungie removed a well-liked PvE mode to introduce Ordinance Heist. An event which requires players to execute multiple successful runs throughout different maps to find multiple key templates which are dropped by PvE enemies. These templates require specific tasks to be completed which makes them eligible for actual usage. Hence, you need to survive another run with 3 completed keys in order to find and open up a specific locker with loot. This locker contains a unique sniper grenade launcher with a mere 6 shots. This weapon cannot be reloaded, nor is there any actual ammo available. Also, this gun turns into (useless) credits after a successful exfil which means that you cannot even keep it in your personal vault for later use. Let's not forget that all of this has to be done over the course of multiple runs without dying.

This convoluted and contrived approach has been plaguing this game for a while. It's so confusing that developers have to clarify these mechanics via social media posts.
To conclude, I had my fun with and the price tag is reasonable enough but joining so late with everyone being so good at the game, it's an uphill battle. Everyone should draw their own line at what point the frustration starts and the fun ends. It's just not worth my time anymore and the barrier to entry is now too high with aimless new additions that feel detached from the core experience. It is such a terrible shame because this title could have been something amazing but it has simply no longevity. So much wasted potential which is honestly saddening. This game is soo good and has lots of potential, but due to weird balance choices, updates that introduce lots of bugs, art thief scandal, bad first impression of the game during reveal, killing of Destiny 2, and other bizarre choices from both Bungie and Sony this will probably become of the generational fumbles. And I'm sad because of it Go watch Marathon Reveal Cinematic Short. Alberto Mielgo makes absolute cinema

I have been playing computer games for ~40 years, and I have only 4-5 10/10 games. This is one of them. I love the art, the story, the gunplay and as a certified loot goblin, I can honestly say that the loot in this game scratches the goblin itch. The immersive touches like the blue blood smeared on the wall when I get hit and the glass breaking when fired at are brilliant. The game is moody, tense and difficult as heck so that when I do win, I get a mega dose of dopamine.

As a solo queue player, who has tried their discord.(Stopped because it's full of rage bating toxicity.) I can fully say 1,317.6 hours is it for me. From the toxic community to the matchmaking system. I wouldn't recommend this to a person who like me goes at it alone and even with a team its a hard recommend. From day 1 to today, its been 6 months since release.
It can feel a bit unorthodox for anyone not accustomed with experimental or hyper stylized visuals.
Some hate it the moment they look at it, some love it, and some remain open to being swayed.
A big part of the respect I have for that game, is for it to be looking the way it is.
In this current era, safe realistic and generic stylized games are often favored as their predecessors paved the way for most.
Within the AAA industry, this artstyle isnt just a choice, its a statement, and the same way Sea of Thieves and Fornite are reference points on their own, so is now Marathon.
It is not an easy feat, and you can clearly feel playing the game that the art team poured a lot in making the visuals a unique and recognizable experience.
Yet it can feel repulsive for some, please spend some time in the world, immerse yourself and keep your mind open. In a world where everything goes so fast, its not so bad to take your time falling in love with something.
Every gun has its own specificities and animations. From the overheating mechanic for some, to the reloading, railgun system, etc ...
Shooting feels good, killing feels great.
The Shells (the class you choose) are visually unique and a pillar of the ability based combat system.
Still super curious as to what would have been Marathon with shell customisation instead.
Yet some guns are able to shift the metas, the shell roaster isnt clearly unbalanced.
Depending on the context (Solo, Duos or Trios) some shells team composition will be favored.
Only one shell has been mostly prevalent recently : Recon
Being able to scan and locate ennemy position is a pretty interesting ability but Bungie didnt yet find the right tuning to it as it create frustrating stalemates that punish any team engaging, especially in high stakes maps (Cryo Archive, Outpost).
Rook is not a shell i particularily enjoy, not in the way it plays, but conceptually. This class serves as a way for people to experience a low-stake game with no skin in the game. You have access to some of the highest value map in the game (Outpost) with nothing required and everything to gain.
That in itself renders playing Solo all that less interesting (appart from completing contracts).
Being able to join a Duo map as a Rook is a nonsense I never was able to understand.
Yes you are technically a solo against duos, but as mentionned later, the TTK is so low that every encounter goes quickly from a 2v1 to a 1v1 -and may I say again- with 0 investment.
Rooks should spawn way later, instead of 20-15 minute mark, down to 10 minute mark.
Forbid Rooks from entering Duo queues, the concept of Rook is being a scavenger.
The Cores and Implants are a good way to shift playstyles and offer new ranges of gameplay. Sadly the low rarity ones you will find are currently offering too little of a change, nothing that would make your run play significantly different. Only way for that to happend would be to get your hands on rarer cores and implants that significantly alter your abilities.. They are though much more complicated to find, and some players will sadly never experience them.
The UESC (AI ennemies) can be somewhat of a threat if not kept in check, but you'll learn to deal with them at some point. In my opinion, the game could benefit from a few more different types to extend the strategic approaches you have to some situations. They may often feel like bullet sponges but I believe arent really designed to be ferocious ennemies, rather a way for players to engage in PvP easier.
I said I wouldnt mention it but its crazy to me that the diversity is so low when you compare it to Destiny.
The PvP itself makes or break that type of game, and Marathon lives on a peculiar thread.
PvP is often an ever-evolving topic in most games, even more so in live-service games and so I believe balance is never fully achieved and is always meta driven. Thats just the way it is.
On that point I wont digress (WSTR, Bubble Shield, MISRIAH, Circuit Breaker, etc ..)
What is usually discussed is TTK (Time To Kill).
The quite short TTK plays a massive role on player frustration level and shortens a lot the interest of some.
Being tagged as a competitive extraction shooter means you will have various FPS players from different backgrounds. This mean onboarding is key to teach your players about restraint and tactical approach.
Tactical & intense encounters are at the core of Marathon and bold/ impetuous decisions will be punished.
Although this is theoretically a good thing, having a hero based ability game that doesnt allow you to react after being shot makes for a frustrating experience.
Im wondering what a higher TTK experience would feel like.
Being able to track damage source after dying is another feature that should be added to allow players understanding the impact some guns can have against them and their decisions.
- Perimeter : Planned for a well needed revamp on Season 3.
- Dire Marsh : Lockdown should honestly start earlier in the run so more teams get involved.
- Outpost : ban Rooks from this map and duo queues
- Cryo Archive : Highly competitive, loot is great and the threat even greater. At the time im writting this, Cryo Archive is a very complex PvP intense map that highlight your knowledge of your shell and the map itself. Vault Breaker is a nice addition and I noticed a surge in players understanding of Vaults and map rotation.
Season 1 got me to level 100 ish. Ongoing Season 2 got me to level 170 so far.
I consider myself an above average FPS player, took me a while to get my first compiler kill (Season2).
For anyone one average or below, compiler is but a mirage that they will never see or experience.
I find that idea interesting, but I dont know about everyone else.
My thoughts on a few key points : I believe a lot of people arent sticking to the game because it struggle to clearly define the player objectives and motives.
The stories and lore of Marathon exists, but its hidden behind subttle environment storytelling and pages upon pages of codex entries. Not fun. Story needs to be more intentionnal, it needs to take the player's hand and guide him.
Marathon needs to explicitely let the player know of his overarching objectives and WHY he gets into a run.
Extracting is cool, but no one wants to play JUST to extract.
Players need the rampant obsession in their head.
Get Vault Keys. Open Vaults. Kill Compiler.
Last entry : Arc Raiders.
Regrettably, the timing of this game's release is one of its biggest drawbacks.
With the intense scrutiny it faced, it's hard to deny that releasing right after ARC Raiders this year worked against it due to the constant comparisons.
I firmly believe that a healthier release and a more polished Beta with proper marketing would have done a lots of difference. (Lets not forget the dodgy art copyright drama the game faced weeks before release)
The sauce is there, the team is experimenting and finding their balance.

Within the AAA industry, this artstyle isnt just a choice, its a statement, and the same way Sea of Thieves and Fornite are reference points on their own, so is now Marathon.
It is not an easy feat, and you can clearly feel playing the game that the art team poured a lot in making the visuals a unique and recognizable experience.
Yet it can feel repulsive for some, please spend some time in the world, immerse yourself and keep your mind open. In a world where everything goes so fast, its not so bad to take your time falling in love with something.
GAMEPLAY:
Gunplay here is not a concern. Most reviews will mention: its clearly one of the highlights of that game.Every gun has its own specificities and animations. From the overheating mechanic for some, to the reloading, railgun system, etc ...
Shooting feels good, killing feels great.
The Shells (the class you choose) are visually unique and a pillar of the ability based combat system.
Still super curious as to what would have been Marathon with shell customisation instead.
Yet some guns are able to shift the metas, the shell roaster isnt clearly unbalanced.
Depending on the context (Solo, Duos or Trios) some shells team composition will be favored.
Only one shell has been mostly prevalent recently : Recon
Being able to scan and locate ennemy position is a pretty interesting ability but Bungie didnt yet find the right tuning to it as it create frustrating stalemates that punish any team engaging, especially in high stakes maps (Cryo Archive, Outpost).
Rook is not a shell i particularily enjoy, not in the way it plays, but conceptually. This class serves as a way for people to experience a low-stake game with no skin in the game. You have access to some of the highest value map in the game (Outpost) with nothing required and everything to gain.
That in itself renders playing Solo all that less interesting (appart from completing contracts).
Being able to join a Duo map as a Rook is a nonsense I never was able to understand.
Yes you are technically a solo against duos, but as mentionned later, the TTK is so low that every encounter goes quickly from a 2v1 to a 1v1 -and may I say again- with 0 investment.
Rooks should spawn way later, instead of 20-15 minute mark, down to 10 minute mark.
Forbid Rooks from entering Duo queues, the concept of Rook is being a scavenger.
The Cores and Implants are a good way to shift playstyles and offer new ranges of gameplay. Sadly the low rarity ones you will find are currently offering too little of a change, nothing that would make your run play significantly different. Only way for that to happend would be to get your hands on rarer cores and implants that significantly alter your abilities.. They are though much more complicated to find, and some players will sadly never experience them.
The UESC (AI ennemies) can be somewhat of a threat if not kept in check, but you'll learn to deal with them at some point. In my opinion, the game could benefit from a few more different types to extend the strategic approaches you have to some situations. They may often feel like bullet sponges but I believe arent really designed to be ferocious ennemies, rather a way for players to engage in PvP easier.
I said I wouldnt mention it but its crazy to me that the diversity is so low when you compare it to Destiny.
The PvP itself makes or break that type of game, and Marathon lives on a peculiar thread.
PvP is often an ever-evolving topic in most games, even more so in live-service games and so I believe balance is never fully achieved and is always meta driven. Thats just the way it is.
On that point I wont digress (WSTR, Bubble Shield, MISRIAH, Circuit Breaker, etc ..)
What is usually discussed is TTK (Time To Kill).
The quite short TTK plays a massive role on player frustration level and shortens a lot the interest of some.
Being tagged as a competitive extraction shooter means you will have various FPS players from different backgrounds. This mean onboarding is key to teach your players about restraint and tactical approach.
Tactical & intense encounters are at the core of Marathon and bold/ impetuous decisions will be punished.
Although this is theoretically a good thing, having a hero based ability game that doesnt allow you to react after being shot makes for a frustrating experience.
Im wondering what a higher TTK experience would feel like.
Being able to track damage source after dying is another feature that should be added to allow players understanding the impact some guns can have against them and their decisions.
MAPS:
Marathon maps are located on the Tau Ceti IV planet and the UESC Marathon itself, they range from humble to highly complex:- Perimeter : Planned for a well needed revamp on Season 3.
- Dire Marsh : Lockdown should honestly start earlier in the run so more teams get involved.
- Outpost : ban Rooks from this map and duo queues
- Cryo Archive : Highly competitive, loot is great and the threat even greater. At the time im writting this, Cryo Archive is a very complex PvP intense map that highlight your knowledge of your shell and the map itself. Vault Breaker is a nice addition and I noticed a surge in players understanding of Vaults and map rotation.
Season 1 got me to level 100 ish. Ongoing Season 2 got me to level 170 so far.
I consider myself an above average FPS player, took me a while to get my first compiler kill (Season2).
For anyone one average or below, compiler is but a mirage that they will never see or experience.
I find that idea interesting, but I dont know about everyone else.
My thoughts on a few key points : I believe a lot of people arent sticking to the game because it struggle to clearly define the player objectives and motives.
The stories and lore of Marathon exists, but its hidden behind subttle environment storytelling and pages upon pages of codex entries. Not fun. Story needs to be more intentionnal, it needs to take the player's hand and guide him.
Marathon needs to explicitely let the player know of his overarching objectives and WHY he gets into a run.
Extracting is cool, but no one wants to play JUST to extract.
Players need the rampant obsession in their head.
Get Vault Keys. Open Vaults. Kill Compiler.
Last entry : Arc Raiders.
Regrettably, the timing of this game's release is one of its biggest drawbacks.
With the intense scrutiny it faced, it's hard to deny that releasing right after ARC Raiders this year worked against it due to the constant comparisons.
I firmly believe that a healthier release and a more polished Beta with proper marketing would have done a lots of difference. (Lets not forget the dodgy art copyright drama the game faced weeks before release)
The sauce is there, the team is experimenting and finding their balance.

I have complicated feelings with this game. It's overall fine but it doesn't feel like a complete game. It sits in a spot where it needs some more to do and yet I've played quite a bit (basically all solo) and sort of feels like a beta/pre-release version they're planning on adding more to. As for my playtime, I played S1 extensively, then I came back at Vault Breakers and played so much to rank up to 100 from playing that and the Dire Marsh Night limited contracts.
As a solo player, the game plays fine but I can only imagine how much better it is if you have some friends to join and play with. It's a grind and at times very frustrating. You will run the same 3 maps (4 if you want to deal with getting a team together for Cryo) over and over again with no real progress being made for genuinely hours. Map loot is generally bad and rarely rewards you for hitting your head against the wall against other players or map mechanics. Everything is impermanent and in most cases, you're honestly better off selling everything you ever loot and going in with a standard kit.
The main progression I've found has been working on the faction priority contracts or finding high value collectibles to fill out your codex. Both of these are genuinely extremely frustrating because you may have a great run and then, to no fault of your own, you lost everything you worked to finish in a run. You were sniped across map by someone you did not and could never have seen or you were killed at extract or you made a mistake and are in a bad position. You try to retry, but the map's locked out now, so you need to wait an hour to try again. Additionally, the priority contracts repeat season to season, so once you complete them once, you lose the progress next season, then are so bored, there's no reason to do them again due to the high friction of doing it the first time.
The closest I have seen to what this game could potentially be to be interesting was Vault Breakers, a limited time PvE event. It uses the extraction mechanics to run an extremely rough roguelike (I imagine if they'd initially developed the game like this, it would be fleshed out and better). You go in, you get a little progress, you extract, you upgrade your kit, you retry. That has actual progression I enjoyed. Cryo is a boring somewhat boring map in a vacuum. The enemies aren't the most fun to fight and VB has really made it obvious. By the end of the event I'd been fighting the compiler solo, I didn't manage a kill, but most of the match was running to points of interest and avoiding as much of the NPCs as I can. I hope they end up making them more fun to fight and make the game have more roguelike content because then it will be genuinely interesting to play and progress.
I would be much more interested if this game had more ways to play, a PvP for Arachne so they have a reason to even be in the game, a PvE roguelike similar to VB with dedicated missions or variants with special loadouts, progression trees, and story, and a PvPvE extraction to help fund the former 2 experiences. Factions should also be the vehicle for how the game is split between different experiences and not just a flourish as infinite repeating mission vendors.
I hope they improve the game because it's a world I want to interact with and experience more, but as it stands right now it is not enjoyable nor rewarding enough to deal with and I cannot recommend this to anyone as a complete experience.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Then I take a break, and come back in a couple weeks hoping they have left the game. Honestly skill based matchmaking would do a lot for this game, or even give us a little more time before death. TTK is insane especially when you're in the starter zone with white shields against a 4k hr no life full gold.
Most of my friends have refunded or just gave up because of the no lifes. Casuals are the ones spending money on your game, you gotta give them something to work with. This game has hands down the best game design/artwork of literally any game. Just go pve or get the sweats into their own lobbies so we can at least play a bit. I am rooting for you guys.
Other than the mostly negative review, I recommend this game to anyone with the hope that one day we will be able to play. Right now expect to die 9/10 raids to someone who hasnt taken his hand off the mouse for 6-8 months. My biggest gripe though is that you can't tell what augments do exclusively by looking at them. you have to hover over them and then read the description. This doesn't sound bad but when there's 40 zillion of em in the game and you have 20 in your stash you don't want to sit there and slowly hover over each one to read a paragraph saying you can sprint slightly longer in the rain just to get to the end and have to re-read them all because they ARE ALL IDENTICAL AND YOU FORGOT WHICH ONE WAS WHICH.
Also force-wipes in this game is ridiculous, I barely had any motivation to play and when that was revealed I didn't want to play anymore because all of my progress would be gone in 3 months another brilliant move Bungie!
To add to the wipes, you can only have one active quest at a time.... what? are you kidding me? this game just try's its best to keep you playing but it doesn't have any of the natural hook to make you WANT to keep playing. Thats what they've lost going from Destiny to Marathon. Destiny wanted to keep your attention for as long as possible and it showed in how the progression was structured but the base gameplay loop was actually fun making it so you wanted to play. Marathon is just so vapid and self-indulging.
They really tried to capture the raid feeling too with the cold storage map (no idea if thats the name I don't care to look it up) but it just doesn't work and is impossible to achieve if you are playing this game casually. ALSO get this ALSOOOOO they lock that damn map so you can't play it like every other week! WHATS THE POINT!!!!! Are you trying to get me to log back in??? NO! Bungie is just so brazen with its time wasting that its hard to not realize they are just wasting your time. This game is making me more unhinged the longer i think about it.

I gave this game a chance. A lot of chances. This game is built around turning undergeared players into free kills for any Prestige-geared players in the round. Any progression, any means of gaining gear in this game requires one basic bottleneck: Succesfully exfiltrating. While every game mechanic - including exfiltration - is geared around loudly setting you up to be another free Outland or Misrah kill. Maybe they get your loot, more likely they don't care. But you get nothing except for wasted time.

Combine that with some really sad F2P monetization decisions and I'm left feeling that this game would have been better as a cooperative shooter that is complete on release, something that could actually give me a start, middle and end rather than leaving me with a promise that will remain endlessly unfulfilled.
