Playing with random players is too risky to justify using your best gear. While playing solo is fun for stealth, you’ll miss out on major parts of the game, like playing Cryo Archive, cleaning out the Pinwheel, or farming enough resources for high-level keys. Without a crew, the grind starts to feel pointless once you hit a certain level. If you have friends to play with, I highly recommend it. If you’re a solo player, you’ll likely get bored fast once you realize how much of the game is out of reach.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

You just need to be OK with losing loot often. It’s hard to understand at first, but keep in mind for every loss or two, you surprise some gooped player and take his load out 100x better than your free kit. There are also 2 games here: teams is fun action, solos is survival horror. And playlist variety keeps things fresh. This game should be very successful. It’s an A+. The people who play this game are so much better than me and I have no interest in spending 1000+ hours in FPSs to get to that level.

If you're a casual gamer (read: employed) you will NOT experience any of the endgame content, and as of right now, you'll probably get farmed as soon as you escape the first 12 levels of safety.

So why not play it? Well... Here's some of my biggest complaints that's stopping me from wanting to hop on the game more, and KNOW a lot of others agree with me...
Matchmaking needs a HUGE rework, and there's a VERY loud and toxic minority, that bullies others into leaving the game quietly, because they refuse to understand any view but their own.
It's hard to love a game when it's hostile to anyone that isn't a raging try hard sweat. Any Casual gamers might as well load into a map and jump off a cliff.
You wanna complete an objective? Nope sorry, you got paired with the most try hard sweats ever, and they're only loading in to hunt you down. You wanna earn money and get better gear? Same issue. You wanna rank up? Yeah sure go ahead, that's easy, but guess what? The more you play, the higher your rank goes up, and the higher your rank goes up the more sweaty the matchmaking gets, even if you haven't gotten better at the game in any way at all. This game loves to take away your chances at even learning how to improve.
The game is designed to be unforgiving, I get that, and I'm okay with it, and to a degree I like that aspect of a gameplay loop, but when the matchmaking is designed to stop you from even getting anything in the first place, it defeats the purpose, you can't take something away from me you never gave me in the first place. I didn't earn anything because you didn't give me a chance to earn it. And because I wasn't given the chance to earn anything, that desired gameplay loop crumbles and is practically non-existent.
Bungie expects this game to be a huge hit and success, but designs the matchmaking to hurt anyone that isn't a niche, specific, and very small group of people, I'm sorry to say but that's what's hurting the game the most. Bungie and their fanboy player base refuse to let anything change, even if it's for the better of the game and its success.
I understand that people say and believe "If you just put in the time and effort, you'll get better"
But sadly they don't account for people like me who have what one could call "skill issues" (including mental processing issues) or for people that don't have all the time and energy in the world.
For example: I've found myself learning maps to a T, Learning weapons, learning from my mistakes, learning from my deaths, watching and learning from professionals, and learning strategies, but when the time comes to use what I learn, there's 0 improvement to the results no matter how many times I start again.
The point is, not everyone has the ability or desire to put full brain power like you into a game, just so they can have a CHANCE to progress in any way shape or form.
I also understand that some people think "Changing the matchmaking wont be lore accurate" but I'm sorry to say, if you want the game to survive and stay up, you need to let it change in ways that allow for more players to be happy with what they're playing.
To explain to you what this game is like for me and others:
Imagine there's a flight of stairs in a building, you need to go up but there's one issue, you're paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair, and the accessibility ramp is blocked off. Someone walks up the stairs, ignoring you. You say "Hey excuse me, could you help me up these stairs?" and their response is "No, you need to get up the stairs yourself." You then try to get up the stairs but to no success. The owner of the building walks by and you say "Hey, would you be willing to unblock the ramp so I can get up the stairs?" and they say "Sorry no, if you wanna get up there, you need to get up like everyone else" and he walks away.
You can't expect a paralyzed person to walk up stairs and then tell them "if you can't get up yourself, get out of the building" especially when there are options available to help them.
Bungie and the players of Marathon have the tools and options to help players that are struggling, but instead they tell the ones struggling to walk up, or get out, and that's hurting the player count.. People want to climb up, but they're not even given the ability to, so guess what? They leave.
When people have critiques about the game, and rightfully complain about how the game needs to change and be more friendly to casual players, the response they're met with is "get good", and unfortunately there's a VERY loud minority of Marathon, that FOAMS at the mouth whenever they're given the chance to say this line to anyone struggling to enjoy the game. This group of people loves to bully others into silence, making them feel like they're wrong for having critiques about the game. When you teach people that their feelings and opinions don't matter and shouldn't be heard, they'll unfortunately stop sharing their opinions, and that's sadly what's going on a lot... If it weren't for that, I feel like there'd be more negative reviews for this game... Instead, people are put in a situation where they feel forced to quietly step away, and act like nothing happened.
"Don't like the game? Get good or get gone, your opinion is wrong."
This mentality will ultimately be Marathon's downfall.
The ONLY way to improve anything is to embrace change, and if nothing changes in this situation then guess what? This game will continue to slowly and quietly die off, and you wont be able to tell anyone to "get good" anymore when the game ultimately dies...
If things by chance change at all, I'll change my review, but if nothing changes it'll stay up how it is.

\n\n\t\t\t\tSo why not play it? Well... Here's some of my biggest complaints that's stopping me from wanting to hop on the game more, and KNOW a lot of others agree with me...
Matchmaking needs a HUGE rework, and there's a VERY loud and toxic minority, that bullies others into leaving the game quietly, because they refuse to understand any view but their own.
It's hard to love a game when it's hostile to anyone that isn't a raging try hard sweat. Any Casual gamers might as well load into a map and jump off a cliff.
You wanna complete an objective? Nope sorry, you got paired with the most try hard sweats ever, and they're only loading in to hunt you down. You wanna earn money and get better gear? Same issue. You wanna rank up? Yeah sure go ahead, that's easy, but guess what? The more you play, the higher your rank goes up, and the higher your rank goes up the more sweaty the matchmaking gets, even if you haven't gotten better at the game in any way at all. This game loves to take away your chances at even learning how to improve.
The game is designed to be unforgiving, I get that, and I'm okay with it, and to a degree I like that aspect of a gameplay loop, but when the matchmaking is designed to stop you from even getting anything in the first place, it defeats the purpose, you can't take something away from me you never gave me in the first place. I didn't earn anything because you didn't give me a chance to earn it. And because I wasn't given the chance to earn anything, that desired gameplay loop crumbles and is practically non-existent.
Bungie expects this game to be a huge hit and success, but designs the matchmaking to hurt anyone that isn't a niche, specific, and very small group of people, I'm sorry to say but that's what's hurting the game the most. Bungie and their fanboy player base refuse to let anything change, even if it's for the better of the game and its success.
I understand that people say and believe "If you just put in the time and effort, you'll get better"
But sadly they don't account for people like me who have what one could call "skill issues" (including mental processing issues) or for people that don't have all the time and energy in the world.
For example: I've found myself learning maps to a T, Learning weapons, learning from my mistakes, learning from my deaths, watching and learning from professionals, and learning strategies, but when the time comes to use what I learn, there's 0 improvement to the results no matter how many times I start again.
The point is, not everyone has the ability or desire to put full brain power like you into a game, just so they can have a CHANCE to progress in any way shape or form.
I also understand that some people think "Changing the matchmaking wont be lore accurate" but I'm sorry to say, if you want the game to survive and stay up, you need to let it change in ways that allow for more players to be happy with what they're playing.
To explain to you what this game is like for me and others:
Imagine there's a flight of stairs in a building, you need to go up but there's one issue, you're paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair, and the accessibility ramp is blocked off. Someone walks up the stairs, ignoring you. You say "Hey excuse me, could you help me up these stairs?" and their response is "No, you need to get up the stairs yourself." You then try to get up the stairs but to no success. The owner of the building walks by and you say "Hey, would you be willing to unblock the ramp so I can get up the stairs?" and they say "Sorry no, if you wanna get up there, you need to get up like everyone else" and he walks away.
You can't expect a paralyzed person to walk up stairs and then tell them "if you can't get up yourself, get out of the building" especially when there are options available to help them.
Bungie and the players of Marathon have the tools and options to help players that are struggling, but instead they tell the ones struggling to walk up, or get out, and that's hurting the player count.. People want to climb up, but they're not even given the ability to, so guess what? They leave.
When people have critiques about the game, and rightfully complain about how the game needs to change and be more friendly to casual players, the response they're met with is "get good", and unfortunately there's a VERY loud minority of Marathon, that FOAMS at the mouth whenever they're given the chance to say this line to anyone struggling to enjoy the game. This group of people loves to bully others into silence, making them feel like they're wrong for having critiques about the game. When you teach people that their feelings and opinions don't matter and shouldn't be heard, they'll unfortunately stop sharing their opinions, and that's sadly what's going on a lot... If it weren't for that, I feel like there'd be more negative reviews for this game... Instead, people are put in a situation where they feel forced to quietly step away, and act like nothing happened.
"Don't like the game? Get good or get gone, your opinion is wrong."
This mentality will ultimately be Marathon's downfall.
The ONLY way to improve anything is to embrace change, and if nothing changes in this situation then guess what? This game will continue to slowly and quietly die off, and you wont be able to tell anyone to "get good" anymore when the game ultimately dies...
If things by chance change at all, I'll change my review, but if nothing changes it'll stay up how it is.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI so desperately want to recommend this game, because the game itself is great. However, the gameplay loop and the community are actively killing the game 10x faster than Destiny 2.
First, let me just say that I think the gunplay and graphics are phenomenal. I love the core gameplay of the game and love the idea behind it.
The major drawback is the gameplay when you put it into practice. With the current playerbase, it takes me 5 minutes to find a match on Outpost, just for someone who has been playing consistently since launch to kill me in the first 30 seconds with absolutely no way/time to react. I understand it being a PvPvE game, and I'm fine with that, but I don't exactly want to fight people 24/7 in the game, and in the past several days I've been forced to fight more people than UESC because of the need to do contracts. I don't exactly have enough time in the game, nor friends to play with to make extremely fast progress, so I'm going in with sponsor kits trying to just get some contracts done to unlock intrinsics. But then I just get met with the sweatiest people ever that shoot on sight no matter what.
This drawback then extends to the community, because these complaints are often met with half-baked retorts such as "skill issue", when in reality people forget it is PvPv*E*, not just PvP, and there will undoubtedly be people who want to play the game for PvE more than just PvP.
The solution to this is simple, and the information is readily available to Bungie. Bungie needs to boost the playerbase somehow, and the 2 best ways that I can think of this are either 1) don't introduce seasonal resets, similar to ARC raiders, or 2) introduce a pure PvE mode that doesn't reset, similar to Tarkov. If they are dead set on keeping the game as-is, then they need to rework the matchmaking and the match lifecycle in such a way that it either 1) supports lobbies that don't get filled so matchmaking takes less time, or 2) allows people to join on a rolling basis and remove the match timer.
My biggest problems aren't the PvP aspect of the game, in fact I do enjoy fighting other people when I'm not trying to do a mundane contract that requires me to run from one end of the map to another in a single run. My biggest problems can be summarized as follows: hostile community, long wait times that could end in you getting 30 seconds of actual gameplay, and the lack of investment into a way to attract the general Destiny 2 playerbase with PvE.
Overall I do chalk my quick deaths up to being rusty since I hadn't played since March, but when I have 1.7 hours in the last 2 weeks, and approximately 75% of that time is spent waiting on a match while the remaining 25% is spent actually playing the game, that isn't an optimistic possibility for new players who try the game for the first time.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There is no region selector and the game insists on sucking up players from other regions to fill matches faster, landing OCE/SEA players on NA servers frequently. For a low stakes mode that would be fine but in an extraction shooter where losing gear can set you back hours of progress it sucks all the fun out of the game, losing engagements because you are permanently a quarter of a second behind, getting rubber-banded out from cover into the open, it all just ruins any semblance of progress you can make and detracts from an already disrespectfully grindy game WITH seasonal wipes.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Years ago our crucible devs got taken away and put on this game and this is what we end up with. Is it a fun game? Yeah sure, its not the worse game i've played but to me it doesnt have longevity like destiny did. Right now this game has 9800 players playing and destiny, a game that just got told is dead has over 11k players. We had so much potential but bungo can not be trusted to feel your gaming needs. This new bungie destroys everything they touch, and to be honest i hope this game fails as well. Ok game but not near enough to kill destiny for\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The design philosophy behind how much time they want you to spend in the game has been taken from their Destiny 2's unpaid second job seasonal grind playbook. In a post they mentioned how you're expected to grind all week and the floodgates open on the weekend where you dump the gear you've earned for cryoarchive and ranked. So instead of gating sweats to the ranked lobbies, you're stuck with them, all the while trying to complete lore missions.
Can you play this game casually and have fun? Yes! Would I recommend it to casual/mediumcore people that enjoy PvP? No. Would I recommend it to players looking to nolife games and sweat it out competitivly to get to the top of PvP hell? Hell yes!

The gunplay is solid, sure. Bungie still knows how to make weapons feel good. But underneath that, Marathon feels like another modern extraction shooter designed around engagement loops instead of memorable worlds, social moments, and long-term attachment.
What hurts most is seeing Bungie finally show they understood Destiny players all along... right when they decided to move on from Destiny 2.

* Permanent Pantheon
* SRL returning
* Loot and progression overhauls
* Crazy sandbox freedom

I love the art style and direction.
Movement and controls feel great.
From what I've seen, the world building is pretty great and it's really well built.
But I'm not a hardcore shooter player, and I mostly want to play this game for the story, the atmosphere, and the style.
Unfortunately though, the matchmaking doesn't seem to really have a good way of pairing you against players of similar skill level, and when you run into someone who does regularly play shooters, you have not just that session's progress wiped away, but everything else you've struggled to claw together in your quest to just be able to build a survivable loadout.
For people who live and breath shooters, I'm sure you'll love this. But if you just want to play casually, or are hoping to mostly stick to PVE, or are looking to just experience the story and world, there's not really a good way to do that. It's actually pretty disappointing.
Maybe that's on me for not knowing what I was getting into, I've not played a game labeled as an extraction shooter before, but.. Yeah. I'll probably try giving this game another couple chances to see if I can get into it, but I think I'm just inherently too casual to be permitted this game's world.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tI love the art style and direction.
Movement and controls feel great.
From what I've seen, the world building is pretty great and it's really well built.
But I'm not a hardcore shooter player, and I mostly want to play this game for the story, the atmosphere, and the style.
Unfortunately though, the matchmaking doesn't seem to really have a good way of pairing you against players of similar skill level, and when you run into someone who does regularly play shooters, you have not just that session's progress wiped away, but everything else you've struggled to claw together in your quest to just be able to build a survivable loadout.
For people who live and breath shooters, I'm sure you'll love this. But if you just want to play casually, or are hoping to mostly stick to PVE, or are looking to just experience the story and world, there's not really a good way to do that. It's actually pretty disappointing.
Maybe that's on me for not knowing what I was getting into, I've not played a game labeled as an extraction shooter before, but.. Yeah. I'll probably try giving this game another couple chances to see if I can get into it, but I think I'm just inherently too casual to be permitted this game's world.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Releasing a paid battle pass on a launch day for a game you already had to pay for is extremely anti-consumer.
