So I thought I would try this and see what it was like before it ended up being killed off due to low player counts. The TLDR is that even if you ignore all of the drama surrounding this game, there are serious matchmaking issues due to low player counts. I spent more time waiting in queue than I did playing, and found what little I did play to be underwhelming at best. They replaced what looked like a good PVE mode with an ordinance heist event, which makes very little sense. Imagine going through multiple specific runs and actions only to get some grenade launcher that you cannot even reload or add to your vault. What was Bungie thinking? Overall, the Bungie of the past no longer exists, so you can skip this. Another addition to the Concordian saga.
For the good, the gunplay seems alright, and I liked playing against some of the PVE enemies, though most of the time, the game seems like they just repeat the same enemies over and over. It isn’t like Helldivers 2, where the enemies each fill a niche, and you have to work together to eliminate them. I can tell the PvE is an afterthought. It is playable for the most part, matchmaking issues aside.
For the not-so-good, I do not like the art style and would have preferred something more realistic. I had one crash to desktop while waiting for a match. Speaking of which, I spent more time waiting for players to fill a lobby than I did playing. The game currently has roughly 3,000 players on Steam, so it makes me wonder: 18 days out from season 3, will this game even survive as is? It must be taking a ton of money to run servers nobody is using, on top of the 300 million+ Bungie spent making and marketing it. What a shame Destiny 3 had to die for this.
The inventory system feels just tacked on, with a lot of the items not being something you can use in a meaningful way. As this was designed as a PvP shooter first and foremost, it is most efficient to wipe entire lobbies and extract. For new players, this can mean playing against highly experienced players and ruin entire runs. I can see why the player base has not expanded much, as being killed before extract or having all your loot constantly taken is not much fun. I wish Bungie had designed onboarding better for new players. There is not much of a story to speak of, and the world-building is background noise at best and is underdeveloped. It is very obvious that Marathon was intended to be PvP, and everything else is secondary.
I wonder how Bungie came to the decision that releasing a game that isn’t free-to-play and is only PvP is a good idea. That and making a PvP-only extraction shooter. Both are bizarre decisions given the current gaming landscape.
The DLC is just skins and credits. Totally missable.

They are even leasing their former offices. Marathon will go down in history as the game that killed a beloved studio. What a shame. Overall, I only picked this up to see what all the fuss is about. Buy Helldivers 2 instead if you want a decent game that is somewhat similar but without the needless inventory stuff and PvP tacked on. I give this game, for what little I was able to play, a 4/10 due to the poor matchmaking, poor onboarding for new players, meaningless inventory items, crashes and lack of meaningful PvE. Even if it was free, it would be too much in my opinion. I do not know what they were thinking pricing it at 49.99 CAD. RIP Bungie.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it to average/casual players who does not enjoy the loop of constant PvP fight non stop against more competent player as lot of the action can make noise which attract other players which might lost all your loot in the process, which makes your time invested in a raid feel frustrating.
This does not played like an extraction shooter game shown by the marketing but feels more like small sized high stakes Battle Royale game with extra steps especially with the latter two maps that have better loot.

But i cannot get behind the gameplay at all, they designed the gameplay around being a more competitive take on extraction shooters with no other reason at all to play the game. idk why game companies cant understand that you cannot force a game to be competitive at launch you have make the game fun to actually play first.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The game is devoid of any ambition and plays it incredibly safe, with a budget reaching over 400 million you’d expect it to be grander than even the original vision entailed, but no, you got a hero shooter with a skin shop, and bland maps with some interesting mechanics, I enjoyed a really good run on pinwheel, and cryo was fun, but theres not really much else besides that, I dont think 30 hours is reasonable to leave a review, but all 30 of those hours were full of desperately trying to love this game, I enjoyed when I got into a gun fight, sometimes, talking to people in the wilds happened to be the most fun, meeting random people who also desperately try to love this game. The different shell gameplay shown to us throughout each of the trailers would make you think that picking a certain character leads to a drastically different playstyle. but that is far from the case. the only REAL playstyle in this game is to rat/camp. Everyone else does it, and if you dont, you will be left at a major disadvantage.
The abilities in this game go on cooldown for so long, it basically makes picking a specific character pointless since once you are on cooldown you are basically just a walking target.
This game has alot of different mechanics that try to be cool and unique but end up failing miserably since they lack any real depth. All of the mechanics and stats are honestly just really confusing (i say confusing because i fail to understand why they are even in the game) and dont change the core gameplay loop at all or in any meaningful way.
during my 40 ish hours of play time i found myself more times than not just loading up with a free kit and selling/converting all of the items i got after extraction since every time i would try to drop in with a "built from scratch" loadout, i would just get eliminated by someone who was corner camping/ratting and instantly lose everything i had worked for. So why even bother trying to bring a loadout into the match when i could just sell/convert all of my items and prevent other players from snatching everything up off of my body making waste of previous runs.
at least when i get ratted/camped and lose a free kit, nothing of value has been lost so i can just que into the next match with another free kit without the stress of losing an item i spent hours of my time for.
That being said, ill be waiting for the pve mode that supposedly drops sometime this december. I wont be expecting anything spectacular, but idk.... heres to hoping im pleasantly surprised...\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The lore and art style for Marathon is fantastic unfortunately bungie decided to make this an extraction shooter that plays like a battle royale. The maps are so small that any action involving fighting the npcs results in everyone on the map running to your location sending you back to the lobby. Bungie tried to make a pve mode but there isnt really any point in running it.

Destiny or Borderlands) but in Marathon there isnt really a need to get new guns as rarity is based of mostly attachments, but since there is no story progression outside of contracts and small lore items (which I liked the lore items) there isnt any meaningful progression, which makes me feel as though I havent done anything with the time I put in. This problem is made worse that everything resets at the end of a season. All of your loot and all of the contracts you completed are reset and you do the same quests over again.

Bungie has built a great foundation for an FPS subgenre that could have had more mass appeal with either some more time for development or a clear timeline of what they wanted to release.
The issue with Marathon's appeal doesn't lie in that it is a "niche subgenre" but rather that Marathon seems to treat new players with hostility. The game hardly explains what an extraction shooter is, has layers of confusing menus, and no real way to learn about the different guns and shells without trying it out for the first time in a real match against other players. As a result, Marathon has struggled to convince a wandering playerbase of casual players to stay.
With all of that being said, the gameplay is the most I've sat at work and thought "I really wish I was playing a video game" in a long time. Learning the layout of each map and knowing when to engage in PvP can be frustrating as much as it is rewarding. The first time you wipe a squad is almost euphoric because you had to work so hard to get to the point where you can beat another player. Whether that was through acquiring knowledge of the game, grinding out for better loot, or taking a bold chance, it feels like you've conquered the world at it's peak and then like you fell into the deepest pit when someone else comes along, drops you and your teammates, and steals all of your loot. Marathon is truly an experience like no other for me, and if you haven't played a game like it, maybe for you too.

however solo queue is a nightmare and there are no game modes to kick back relax and have fun in.
its pure sweat 100% of the time. which is great when you want to sweat.
but there needs to be flexibility of gamemodes that offer different things for different moods.

Lore is insanely attractive to me as destiny player. I would say this game is worth to try if there's wasn't one problem, nobody is playing this game. I cannot recommend this game if the matchmaking system is going to give me players that have way more time and are way better, making it harder to learn better and somewhat consistently win. I want to love this game, but matchmaking is so horrible it makes it hard to have fun.

Sometimes you get put into high ping servers, making it impossible to have a fair fight with anyone. Meanwhile, server side movement also means that sometimes you get stuck on a door that's open on someone else's screen, sometimes you get desynched and don't even get me started on trying to go down a ladder without actually scaling it down, you will be stuck there forever.
Everyone praises marathon's sound design for its quality, accuracy and immersion. While I do enjoy the sound design in this game for the ambience, it's absolutely not the best for PVP. The vertical sound is especially hard to decipher, you can hardly tell if someone is above, below or at the same level as you from sound alone. It's so bad that you have to rely on little hints like the slightly muffled sound of doors opening/closing in pinwheel to figure out if you're hearing people inside the pinwheel or outside.
Oh, you thought movement was the only thing that was server based? Of course not! There's more. In this game, you can sometimes hit bots multiple times with a knife without the server registering it, all while they shoot you continuously. My personnal record is 5 hits in a row without a hitmarker. It would be frustrating enough if it only happened with bots, but alas, I've died many times in a fight against another player because my knife pierced his body but did no damage. I guess the worms must've used some alien alloy weaving this one eh. On a completely unrelated (not) note, the Zeus railgun is one of my favorite and most hated weapons in the game, depending on whether it feels like working or not. I recently played a cryo match where I shot a destroyer crouching on a beam directly in front of me 5 times. Out of those 5 shots, 1 connected, 1 missed, 3 had their energy beams splash on his body without giving me a hitmarker. In the end, I died to that guy, who missed 9/12 of his magnum shots before finally getting me.
In the end, whether you kill someone or not sometimes just comes down to luck. If the server doesn't like you, good luck hitting anything. For a game that has PVP as its main focus and that is so highly praised for its gunplay, this is completely unacceptable.
To be completely clear, I'm not frustrated at the difficulty of the game, I've adapted and overcome it a long time ago. But I just had a game where I went solo outpost, intentionally took an incredibly good loadout that I knew I couldn't lose with in order to do 2 gold key template quest. I did everything right and got into pinwheel, got pushed by a very aggressive player, managed to fend him off, was about to go finish him and started lagging like crazy. Naturally, I disengaged as far as I possibly could. When he eventually found me, I played it incredibly safe and caught him off guard, only to go in to finish him with the knife (something I do from instinct because it's my favorite playstyle), only to not have my last hit register die to a guy that made multiple mistakes and should not have won under those circumstances.
While I do realize that I could've played even safer, not gone for the knife and likely won the fight, I will also emphasize that it was a calculated risk and I landed every hit/shot I meant to land, only for the game to let me down in the end. It's not so much the fact that I lost that hurts, it's the way that it happened. If I lost the fight fair and square, I would have nobody to blame but myself. But in this game, I wish I hadn't even launched the game today at all, which is not the kind of retrospection you want your players to have, Bungie.
I've been patient with this game for a very long time, I've had great ups as I've had terrible downs, but at no point have I felt like uninstalling the game like I did after this previous incident. Furthermore, the state of the game has been horrendous since S2 launched: not only are the queue times longer than S1, but so are the load times, which makes absolutely no sense as those aren't influenced by the game's playercount. Bungie also has absolutely no clue in the world how to balance their game. This is blatently shown with their poor handling of the shotgun nerfs and the way they "addressed" grenade spam. They genuinely have been making bad decision after bad decision for multiple months, seemingly without realizing what it is the players actually want from them.
The more I think about it the more I agree with the "Bungie had it coming" crowd. I love the game an extraordinary amount, I've been playing it for half a year now and I wish more people would give it a chance, but then I think of how much I, not so much a casual gamer, often get frustrated with the game, I can't imagine someone with an actual life enjoying this whatsoever.
The S3 update looks extremely promising, but with it being delayed all the way to december with seemingly not much new content until them, I can't help but feel disappointed.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
