Deploying takes forever. I've resorted to playing as Rook to minimize deployment times, but gathering all this loot feels empty considering I barely see another player and it's all going to get wiped soon.
It's a shame they didn't add a PVE and story mode at launch because visually the game is very nice. Sometimes it's a little overbearing but overall I like the aesthetic. I think a major reason for the backlash is that a large portion of the gaming population has an extremely low tolerance for failure. Combine that with Destiny 2 being placed into maintenance mode, and Marathon became the perfect target for an enormous amount of resentment before many people were even willing to meet the game on its own terms.
Marathon is not a game where you are supposed to win 24/7. You are going to fail. You are going to lose gear. You might wipe two entire teams and then get killed by a random bot thirty seconds later. I have seen it happen firsthand.
The game requires patience, adaptation, and resilience. You have to accept losses, learn from them, and keep pushing forward. A lot of the criticism I see seems to come from players who struggle with that kind of experience, then blame the matchmaking, progression, PvP, other players, or the game itself instead of acknowledging that sometimes they simply got outplayed.
That does not mean Marathon is flawless. There are legitimate things Bungie can improve, especially matchmaking, onboarding, and the experience for newer players. But the amount of hostility directed at this game is wildly disproportionate to its actual problems.
If you cannot tolerate losing, dying, losing gear, or having matches where nothing goes your way, this probably is not the game for you. That is not necessarily a flaw in the game.
If you enjoy excellent gunplay, tense fights, high stakes, and a game that actually expects you to improve, I absolutely recommend Marathon.

The different shell gameplay shown to us throughout each of the trailers would make you think that picking a certain character leads to a drastically different playstyle. but that is far from the case. the only REAL playstyle in this game is to rat/camp. Everyone else does it, and if you dont, you will be left at a major disadvantage.
The abilities in this game go on cooldown for so long, it basically makes picking a specific character pointless since once you are on cooldown you are basically just a walking target.
This game has alot of different mechanics that try to be cool and unique but end up failing miserably since they lack any real depth. All of the mechanics and stats are honestly just really confusing (i say confusing because i fail to understand why they are even in the game) and dont change the core gameplay loop at all or in any meaningful way.
during my 40 ish hours of play time i found myself more times than not just loading up with a free kit and selling/converting all of the items i got after extraction since every time i would try to drop in with a "built from scratch" loadout, i would just get eliminated by someone who was corner camping/ratting and instantly lose everything i had worked for. So why even bother trying to bring a loadout into the match when i could just sell/convert all of my items and prevent other players from snatching everything up off of my body making waste of previous runs.
at least when i get ratted/camped and lose a free kit, nothing of value has been lost so i can just que into the next match with another free kit without the stress of losing an item i spent hours of my time for.
That being said, ill be waiting for the pve mode that supposedly drops sometime this december. I wont be expecting anything spectacular, but idk.... heres to hoping im pleasantly surprised...\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

But also yes, this game is awesome. I would definitely try it out to see if you like it at the very least because the cycle is addicting to me, even as someone who can only play a couple hours a week, if that. Last season (pre Nightfall Refresh) I hardly had any gold loot by the end of it, Cradle wasn't even half maxxed, and I was still having a blast. I MIGHT just be the exception, but if you enjoy high risk, high reward games and don't get too tilted by having to run it back, just hop on and have some fun. Added Bonus is visuals, sound design, weapon and shell design, color scheme, etc. are all AMAZING.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

They decided to make it an extraction shooter, even though the old IP was a campaign. I don't know if it was Sony's choice or what but it ruined the game. The gameplay loop just isn't fun, and PvP is excruciating with the way the map was designed, and shouldn't have been the focus. Not to mention the insane amount of grind needed to get to the boss, which is what drew me and my friends in in the first place.
I saw they're making a PvE only mode and I love that, so good job on trying to fix the huge issues with Marathon. But please work on a campaign, I wish you guys didn't cook so hard on the lore just to make it an extraction shooter that's heavily PvP focused.

If the idea of the harsh gameplay/learning curve of counter-strike but the actual fps mechanics of Halo/Destiny appeals, then Marathon will probably be a lot of fun for you. For everyone else its the constant experience of getting ♥♥♥♥ on by players playing since Day 1, or players with much more spare time than you, until you eventually just give up and do something else.
The core loop is much more like a Battle Royale with objectives and looting than an extraction shooter, imo. The maps have a LOT of dead space, NPC's are few and far between, and there's nothing like a shrinking zone of death to force players to interact.
Marathon is actually well put together, it just also happens to be niche difficulty game with the main appeal being that depending on game mode any player can help or hurt you at any time and make you lose all your progress. That's the crux of the appeal of the design and its main problem. It won't appeal to everyone, and this game will live and die on the number of people playing it.

Anyone with a brain could, and this makes me worry about Bungies ability to manage anything other than classic Halo anymore.
The latest update looks like the dev's have cottoned on to how the base gameplay is plenty good, but the hyper-competitiveness kills a lot of potential interest for prospective players- so they're working on more casual game modes or PvE only gameplay areas. I hope this works out for them.

The genre being a competitive pvp extraction shooter when the originals were linear fps games with deathmatch pvp on the side is nonsensical. The gameplay is nothing special in a vacuum, with ludicrously long cooldowns on any ability that might break up the monotony. What few non-player enemies exist are boring and spongy. The gun designs are ugly and don't make up for it by feeling as plain as all hell to shoot.

Bungie has built a great foundation for an FPS subgenre that could have had more mass appeal with either some more time for development or a clear timeline of what they wanted to release.

With all of that being said, the gameplay is the most I've sat at work and thought "I really wish I was playing a video game" in a long time. Learning the layout of each map and knowing when to engage in PvP can be frustrating as much as it is rewarding. The first time you wipe a squad is almost euphoric because you had to work so hard to get to the point where you can beat another player. Whether that was through acquiring knowledge of the game, grinding out for better loot, or taking a bold chance, it feels like you've conquered the world at it's peak and then like you fell into the deepest pit when someone else comes along, drops you and your teammates, and steals all of your loot. Marathon is truly an experience like no other for me, and if you haven't played a game like it, maybe for you too.
With a dwindling playerbase and a lack of communication from the developers, I believe this December update will be the last chance for this game. Will this game go Free to Play by then? Maybe. Learning the layout of each map and knowing when to engage in PvP can be frustrating as much as it is rewarding. The first time you wipe a squad is almost euphoric because you had to work so hard to get to the point where you can beat another player. Whether that was through acquiring knowledge of the game, grinding out for better loot, or taking a bold chance, it feels like you've conquered the world at it's peak and then like you fell into the deepest pit when someone else comes along, drops you and your teammates, and steals all of your loot. Marathon is truly an experience like no other for me, and if you haven't played a game like it, maybe for you too.
With a dwindling playerbase and a lack of communication from the developers, I believe this December update will be the last chance for this game. Will this game go Free to Play by then? Maybe. It has brought back all the memories of first playing Halo, exploring an alien world where you don't belong, picking apart a story told in the background piece by piece. Each run I unlocked a little more, went a little further, and now that mode is gone and my gear progress with it. It doesn't matter though because what I actually gained was that experience of exploring the Marathon, of picking through a long haunted ship as much dead as it is alive.

The gunplay and everything else are great, but it's a dumb extraction shooter that can't decide on its audience. I probably could tolerate some of it if it weren't for what feels like every damn quest having a stupid 'Single Run' requirement, especially the 'Main' quests that give you lore and story. Going into random trios is basically a 1 in 3 chance you'll spawn near your quest, meaning your squad helps you finish it. If not better luck next match. So you try doing it solo, only to get killed by a schizophrenic hiding in every corner.

What began as a fascination with its unusual beauty, striking aesthetics, haunting atmosphere, and mysterious sci-fi universe has turned into one of the most absorbing gaming experiences I've had in quite some time. And the remarkable thing? I genuinely feel I've barely scratched the surface.
Beneath that extraordinary presentation lies a surprisingly deep and rewarding game that gradually reveals itself to those willing to invest the time to understand it. This isn't a game that hands you everything on a plate, and personally, I think that's one of its greatest strengths.
My advice to new players? Start as a Rook. Take your time, explore, learn the maps, understand the systems, and get comfortable with how the world works. Then choose a shell that appeals to you, experiment with free kits, develop your skills, and gradually build from there. Don't rush the experience or feel you need to compete with seasoned players straight away. There's real satisfaction in learning and improving through your own experiences.
And then there's the tactical combat, which has become one of my favourite aspects of the game. The encounters can be absolutely exhilarating. It's not simply about who has the better weapon or who shoots first. Positioning, awareness, preparation, timing, and knowing when to engage or disengage can completely change the outcome of a fight. I've had encounters where carefully placed trip mines, quick reactions, and a little tactical thinking have allowed me to take down players who might otherwise have had the advantage. One particularly memorable fight had me taking down two members of a three-player squad as a solo Rook, only to be finished off by the third. And you know what? I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it, including losing. The tension, the split-second decisions, the constant awareness of your surroundings, and the satisfaction of seeing a plan actually work are tremendous. Even in defeat, you walk away having learned something.
That's something I particularly appreciate about Marathon. Losing doesn't necessarily feel like failure. Sometimes an encounter you don't survive teaches you far more than one you win. You start thinking differently, approaching situations more intelligently, anticipating movement, using the environment, and developing your own tactical style. It's a wonderful learning curve when you embrace it rather than fight against it.
Marathon is one of those rare games that rewards curiosity, patience, adaptability, and persistence. It certainly won't appeal to everyone, and that's fine. But I do think some players are missing something rather special by expecting everything to be immediately accessible or rushing past the learning experience.
And once this game finally gets its teeth into you, it really doesn't let go. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to pull myself away to play anything else.
