I first discovered The Long Dark in 2014, watching Stacy Plays play through sandbox mode. once I was old enough myself for a computer, one of the first things I did was get steam, and buy TLD. I spent many hours playing through sandbox across multiple platforms, until Wintermute was released in 2017, where I started the story of Mackenzie and Astrid. I was just about to turn 11 when I started the story, and now I am freshly 20, finishing the final episode. This game has grown with me over the years, and I will forever have a special place in my heart for it. There is so much clear, visible, time, effort, and soul put into this game by their team at Hinterland. I have so many fond memories of playing this game, exploring, looking forward to new updates and releases, and so much more. All the chapters leading up to no 5 was great. You followed a storyline but had the freedom to explore and do things in your own order while still following the story. The last chapter you were basically handheld, guided, pointed in one direction, and it felt like you didn't need to think, you just followed the road.
All the build up, all the mystery, came to a most hollow, flat and disappointing ending. It really felt like the creators got lost on the way, creating a great build up, and didn't manage to tie the knot in the end. Or they just wanted to get it done.

I purchased this game because there were many great reviews about the story mode in this game. Unfortunately I find myself having difficulty motivating myself to progress in this game. I'm seven hours in and I have progressed a small amount into the second chapter. The gameplay is very monotonous, repetitive, and long winded. I have a hard time believing that you are left for dead by a woman that you risked your life to help. I have a hard time understanding the setting, is this a post apocalyptic future? Is this a strange island away from society? I can't tell if these towns were abandoned recently, or have been for a while. I can't figure out what the tone of this story is or what direction it's going because can't tell the difference between characterization and environmental storytelling from lazy writing and indifferent design.

The difficulty settings are on point, and the whole game is a massive labour of love. The game's visual design both compliment the cold setting and readability. it looks amazing.
If you like survival then you should get this game.
now, if you wanna try the story - go ahead, but don't buy this game for it. The writer had far too much control and nobody said no. The writing and story is quite frankly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Nonsensical plot, repeating dialogue, pointless beats, and evil character just for evil character. The nature is not your antagonist, contrary to what everyone would have assumed and which would have worked far better - instead it's some weird prison guy? The story is a drag to get through, with cutscenes that just go on and on.
It's a shame the writing drags it down, because once again it is brilliant visually! especially episode 5 has a couple of cutscenes I could watch over and over - if only I didn't have to listen to them. The soundtrack is wonderfully composed. The voice acting is a bit lacking, but with dialogue like that and not much direction I can't imagine it could have gone any better.
Overall the game is great, the survival is there and can keep you happy forever - but the story is there for someone who just wants to see it. Come prepared for "the room" levels of dialogue choices.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I’ve been familiar with it since the very first alpha versions and the old videos by EugeneSagaz from 2014 (I highly recommend watching them, at least with subtitles), and it made a huge impression on me right away. The music, the voice acting, that atmosphere of loneliness, the graphics. Everything about this game captivated me. I think that, in many ways, The Long Dark shaped my taste in games in general, and for that I’m grateful to it. Of course, over time, the game has been expanded with various new content, but at the same time, it has lost something... a certain part of its charm.
