I’ve never really considered myself a “gamer.” I grew up playing The Sims, Nintendo DS games, Bratz, interior design games, and whatever else my 90s childhood threw at me. What I loved most was creating something, watching it grow, and escaping into a world I could shape.
Then I found RimWorld.
At first, I almost didn’t buy it because it looked… overwhelming. Every screenshot made me think, There is no way I’m smart enough for this game. Turns out, I was completely wrong. RimWorld has incredible depth, but it doesn’t expect you to learn everything at once. You start by trying to keep three crash-landed people alive. Before you know it, you’re debating research priorities, redesigning your freezer for the fifth time, and wondering how it’s suddenly 2:00 a.m.
What surprised me most is how much freedom the game gives you. You can micromanage every colonist, carefully assigning jobs, paying attention to their backstories, moods, and needs—or you can zoom out and run your colony like a well-oiled machine. Neither way is “correct,” and that’s one of the reasons this game has so much staying power. My playstyle has evolved several times over the last 1,295 hours, and every new colony somehow feels like a fresh challenge instead of a repeat.
No two runs are ever the same. Sometimes I’m peacefully building my little settlement. Sometimes I’m fending off raids. Sometimes I’m recruiting the same people who tried to kill me five minutes earlier. Sometimes my entire colony collapses spectacularly… and instead of rage quitting, I’m already clicking “New Colony” because I know exactly what I want to try next.
I also love that RimWorld fits into real life. I can slow time down while I’m planning, crank it up to 3x speed when everything’s running smoothly, and pause whenever life inevitably interrupts. It’s one of the few games that feels completely immersive without demanding my full attention every second.
And then there’s the personality.
This game has me talking to my laptop more than almost any other game I’ve played.
“What are you doing?!”
“What the…?”
“Are you serious right now?”
…usually followed by laughing because whatever just happened somehow makes perfect RimWorld sense.
Your colonists don’t feel like little robots waiting for orders. They have moods, personalities, quirks, and occasionally decide to go completely off script. Ignore someone’s needs a little too long, and they’ll remind you in the most chaotic way possible. Those unexpected moments are what make every colony feel less like a strategy game and more like a story you’ll end up telling someone later.
The soundtrack lives rent-free in my head. The quirky names, strange events, rituals, animals, and constant “I did not see that coming” moments give the game so much charm.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI want to start off by saying that I didn't (and still don't to a certain extent) really like 2D games or isometric games because of the obvious limitations that come with them and the usual jank that comes from developers trying to work with them, so buying Rimworld was sort of a choice that I thought I'd end up regretting later. Rimworld managed to make up to this and deliver MUCH more with the amount of depth and content it offers, even without any DLCs or mods. By this alone it has kind of mediated me into playing more 2D games and that should already give you an idea of how incredible this game is.
The game is quite intuitive aside from a couple game mechanics, the player is also supported by the tutorial and the in game learning helper that gives tips and information based on whatever you're doing. The only guide I watched on this game was of a mod called combat extended (more on that later). The aforementioned mechanics such as wealth have somewhat of a niche to them and may need further dwelling to get a grasp of but is absolutely not required for casual gameplay and usually people only learn them to get an advantage in harder challenges. It's also very polished, I can't remember the last time I had an actual bug with one of the base game components.
Because of the game's sandbox nature, you can pretty much do whatever you want to with your game and colony. It's important to mention that despite this, the game gives you a narrative and an actual objective (This is completely up to you if you want to actually finish it or not) with progression, which is very welcome in the day and age where games use sandbox as a cope to not actually give their game meaningful progression. It also goes very hand in hand with the emergent goals you give your colony during your playthrough and doesn't get in the way.
Your pawns, or colonists, are not hard to manage and are quite cooperative all things considered. It also doesn't give off the feeling that you are controlling dumb robot while doing so, with factors such as their mood and personality traits being considered whenever they do an action. Occasionally the pawns might do stupid ♥♥♥♥ like path into a insect hive because they wanted to haul a corpse, but things like this are also avoidable with area management. Of course with the game being a colony simulator, you'll have to take care of their mood, social... and make sure your colonist with a chemical fascination doesn't have access to your cocaine stash for example.
The vanilla combat (especially the ranged combat) is somewhat mediocre and quite RNG based, but can be played around in your favor with some tactics. I normally abhor the idea of judging a game based on it's extensions and mods for reasons but Combat Extended is such an incredibly good mod that takes the only weak point (hence why I had to mention it) of the game in my opinion and turns it into one of the strongest. Seriously, the only reason I believe something of this order isn't implemented in the base game is because it changes a bit too much especially with other mods in the mix.
Another major selling point of the game is that it's more of a storyteller than a traditional strategy game. This is mostly apparent and is quite well integrated into the game with features such as dialogs and social relations between characters. But in my opinion the usual gameplay consists more of emergent tales and events than a whole, smooth story. This isn't to say you can't get actual stories but the gameplay does favor small but numerous ones.
There is a lot more to say about Rimworld that I couldn't dream of squeezing into this review because of it's plethora of features and even more that the DLCs add. As for the DLCs, I think most are also well made but it's up to debate if they are worth their prices or not. \n\n\t\t\t\tThe game is quite intuitive aside from a couple game mechanics, the player is also supported by the tutorial and the in game learning helper that gives tips and information based on whatever you're doing. The only guide I watched on this game was of a mod called combat extended (more on that later). The aforementioned mechanics such as wealth have somewhat of a niche to them and may need further dwelling to get a grasp of but is absolutely not required for casual gameplay and usually people only learn them to get an advantage in harder challenges. It's also very polished, I can't remember the last time I had an actual bug with one of the base game components.
Because of the game's sandbox nature, you can pretty much do whatever you want to with your game and colony. It's important to mention that despite this, the game gives you a narrative and an actual objective (This is completely up to you if you want to actually finish it or not) with progression, which is very welcome in the day and age where games use sandbox as a cope to not actually give their game meaningful progression. It also goes very hand in hand with the emergent goals you give your colony during your playthrough and doesn't get in the way.
Your pawns, or colonists, are not hard to manage and are quite cooperative all things considered. It also doesn't give off the feeling that you are controlling dumb robot while doing so, with factors such as their mood and personality traits being considered whenever they do an action. Occasionally the pawns might do stupid ♥♥♥♥ like path into a insect hive because they wanted to haul a corpse, but things like this are also avoidable with area management. Of course with the game being a colony simulator, you'll have to take care of their mood, social... and make sure your colonist with a chemical fascination doesn't have access to your cocaine stash for example.
The vanilla combat (especially the ranged combat) is somewhat mediocre and quite RNG based, but can be played around in your favor with some tactics. If you start playing with just the base version, it'll still be a fun experience to play the game. If you want more, there's all sorts of mods to add to the game. But not all mods are accessible right away as some may require DLC's, and DLC's Themselves change quite a lot of things. Want a spaceship? Odyssey DLC. Want horror? We got Anomaly. Want to make your own alien race? Biotech DLC (A must have if you ever plan on buying a DLC imo).
One thing you should note to yourself that rimworld is about the journey. There will be triumphs and tragedies. Hell, i had times when one of my colonists died the dumbest way possible. Like that one time, a colonist got crushed by rocks because i forgot to give roof support during mining (whoops). Or when the raider with a revolver got a lucky hit and one tapped my colonist... the colonist was wearing a helmet and a vest and got defeated by a man with a revolver and a beanie... yep....
but even though i could've loaded a save, i didn't. Because it kept things interesting. Only load saves if something rather strange happens (like bugs, etc.)... Or to do something silly. But of course, if you need harsh enforcement on saves, you can always run the permadeath mode. Makes losses that much tragic and the story more captivating.
It truly is absolute cinema.

You can set up the game exactly the way you want, and the possibilities are endless.

I should love this game but it honestly kinda sucks. It’s not very good at making meaningful stories. The world building is always extremely thin even with mods compared to its main competitor (dwarf fortress which is still not even finished yet). Most of the story making in rimworld is you making your own story in your mind to try and reconcile the random ass things in your play through.
Not to mention the asinine difficulty scaling. It’s fine when you know how it works so you can game the hell out of it. But even then having to burn all my unneeded loot or throw Grenades at it just so I can keep the difficulty scaling in check is not good story telling imo.
Basically it is hella pretentious from the way it presents its self to the way the mechanics work. There could almost be a good game here and I think the theme of the game is extremely captivating but it is such a chore to play and that comes from someone who enjoys dwarf fortress. I really tried to like this game so hard because again its setting is really cool.
The OST for this game is truly amazing. The art style is also interesting especially because it does exactly what it sets out to do (as far as I understood) which is to be so plain that you end up kinda imagining stuff in your head whilst still providing all the visual information you need to play the game smoothly.
The performance is trash from what I hear and have seen (on youtube), if you actually manage to make a thriving -COLONY- of more than 30 people or even one that lasts a really long time on the same save due to the fact it makes relationship characters for every character you ever actually see on your map (even the bandits) like their parents or a lover. However I am pretty sure the reason it is so laggy in this regard and it also doesnt really add to the story telling very well all the time is because it's entirely random. The world is not generated in a procedural timeline fashion, everything is randomly generated so any NPC that does come through your patch of land or that you raid or whatever did not exist until you see them, unless they were already generated by the relations system.
This can lead to cool moments where maybe one of your characters relatives crash land after you already started and you can save them. However, because everything is random, it can also mean that the character you just started with that you had made a backstory for that they were on a colony ship that had a major accident as they arrived, you made this backstory to fit one of the preset scenarios the game gives you at the start. But somehow his ex lover is the leader of one of tha cannibal pirate gangs that doesnt even have the same ideaology (if you have that dlc) than the people of the colony ship your character came from. And she is biologically and chronologically younger than you. So you now have to make up that, your characters ex lover somehow travelled space faster than you and got here first and naturalized her self so well with one of the planet's most brutal factions. There is no history mode because everything is random.
I think because the systems and world building are based on random factors more than procedural ones. It just makes a random ass cobobble of stuff, which ends up being even a technical problem with performance because nothing is grounded. You are not getting raided because a war party was near by or you lived near that faction. It's because story teller says random event must happen and you have X wealth. Most the characters you meet did not exist until you met them. They are not living in the world most the time and even if they are they are they will mostly never interact with you again other than causing lag.
You also cannot carry over anything from playthrough to playthrough. I will relase a mini series of me dieing a million times to cassandra on a hot arid planet one day. The theme was that it's how all the survivors of a colony ship died until one actually escaped. But finding the ruins of one of the previous attempts would be impossible with out mods. Or if you wanted to make a new story on a planet where you already had a story set after that story ended, you couldn't do it because you can't load a planet as it's own thing. You would have to recreate the planet and the factions and settings and the story would have the same start date as the last ones and the factions would be unchanged. Yes you can maybe find a mod to change the start date, you can remove faction types you killed off or something (but doing so would change the names) and then make it up in your head its the same place. BUT HOW MUCH OF THAT IS ME MAKING THE STORY AT THAT POINT? That's all caps because the game positions its self as "not a game" but a "story generator" and that's cool but right now I feel like I'm the story generator. Not the game. And whilst that is always going to be true (even for dwarf fortress) I shouldn't feel like "omg this makes no sense how can I make it make sense, maybe this caused this caused this and that's why it's happening" or at the very least I should have enough lore to make a backstory that actually fits with what the worlds story is.
Like my only main fortress on Dwarf Fortress, I read the legends, found a dieing dwarf faction. Turned out they were one of the first dwarven civilizations to get plagued with a necromancer and all their settlements had been wiped out. The necromancer was none other than the first first Queen's lover and sports champion. He started to seek immortality and found it in necromancy. They eventually found out and expelled him. He spent years raising dead and corrupting people to his cause. And I mean like 70 years. His cult even corrupted the Queen's daughter (who was his daughter too). They eventually sieged the city multiple times until it fell. Named survivors who were not officials fled with a bard troupe, which was led by a goblin and had many elves. The new queen was still at the city . All of that is stuff the game generated for me before I even played the world. Every group, or important character has these kinds of back stories that all intertwine with each other to create the world. It allows you and the game to make meaningful decisions. The irony is all of this is procedurally generated from a pseudo random start like a minecraft world, which Rimworld already has, but it's the procedural cause and effects generated for like 100 years of game time over that initial super random layer that gives everything depth. It gives the game a massive pool of NPCs to choose from with out having to generate new npcs with new relations most the time. It means you don't need random events forced on you so hard because stuff is already happening before you got there. And it just makes me very disapointed that something that I can only compare to, to something like Dwarf Fortress in it's potential as a story generator often makes me feel like, damn that was a waste of time.
A big factor to that is modding, mod support and no decent way to get the game version you want on your pc so updates dont break your carefully curated mod order for the current game version (until its no longer current). That has killed a few playthroughs as I wouldn't play something like a rimworld play through from beginning to end in just a few months. It's the type of game where I would like to play maybe for a month and come back to that save like next year. And this game does not cover it's bases well enough for you to not want to play with out mods.
I didn't mention the price. The base game, is well priced for what it is. But the DLCs are wayy to expensive especially considering many of them are like, basically a mod that has access to hardcoded stuff modders can't mess with. If modders had access to change the hard coded stuff they would make stuff that would make the DLCs look tiny. For free.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There is no history mode because everything is random.
I think because the systems and world building are based on random factors more than procedural ones. It just makes a random ass cobobble of stuff, which ends up being even a technical problem with performance because nothing is grounded. You are not getting raided because a war party was near by or you lived near that faction. It's because story teller says random event must happen and you have X wealth. Most the characters you meet did not exist until you met them. They are not living in the world most the time and even if they are they are they will mostly never interact with you again other than causing lag.
You also cannot carry over anything from playthrough to playthrough. I will relase a mini series of me dieing a million times to cassandra on a hot arid planet one day. The theme was that it's how all the survivors of a colony ship died until one actually escaped. But finding the ruins of one of the previous attempts would be impossible with out mods. Or if you wanted to make a new story on a planet where you already had a story set after that story ended, you couldn't do it because you can't load a planet as it's own thing. You would have to recreate the planet and the factions and settings and the story would have the same start date as the last ones and the factions would be unchanged. Yes you can maybe find a mod to change the start date, you can remove faction types you killed off or something (but doing so would change the names) and then make it up in your head its the same place. BUT HOW MUCH OF THAT IS ME MAKING THE STORY AT THAT POINT? That's all caps because the game positions its self as "not a game" but a "story generator" and that's cool but right now I feel like I'm the story generator. Not the game. And whilst that is always going to be true (even for dwarf fortress) I shouldn't feel like "omg this makes no sense how can I make it make sense, maybe this caused this caused this and that's why it's happening" or at the very least I should have enough lore to make a backstory that actually fits with what the worlds story is.
Like my only main fortress on Dwarf Fortress, I read the legends, found a dieing dwarf faction. Turned out they were one of the first dwarven civilizations to get plagued with a necromancer and all their settlements had been wiped out. The necromancer was none other than the first first Queen's lover and sports champion. He started to seek immortality and found it in necromancy. They eventually found out and expelled him. He spent years raising dead and corrupting people to his cause. And I mean like 70 years. His cult even corrupted the Queen's daughter (who was his daughter too). They eventually sieged the city multiple times until it fell. Named survivors who were not officials fled with a bard troupe, which was led by a goblin and had many elves. The new queen was still at the city . All of that is stuff the game generated for me before I even played the world. Every group, or important character has these kinds of back stories that all intertwine with each other to create the world. It allows you and the game to make meaningful decisions. The irony is all of this is procedurally generated from a pseudo random start like a minecraft world, which Rimworld already has, but it's the procedural cause and effects generated for like 100 years of game time over that initial super random layer that gives everything depth. It gives the game a massive pool of NPCs to choose from with out having to generate new npcs with new relations most the time. It means you don't need random events forced on you so hard because stuff is already happening before you got there. And it just makes me very disapointed that something that I can only compare to, to something like Dwarf Fortress in it's potential as a story generator often makes me feel like, damn that was a waste of time.
A big factor to that is modding, mod support and no decent way to get the game version you want on your pc so updates dont break your carefully curated mod order for the current game version (until its no longer current). That has killed a few playthroughs as I wouldn't play something like a rimworld play through from beginning to end in just a few months. It's the type of game where I would like to play maybe for a month and come back to that save like next year. And this game does not cover it's bases well enough for you to not want to play with out mods.
I didn't mention the price. The base game, is well priced for what it is. But the DLCs are wayy to expensive especially considering many of them are like, basically a mod that has access to hardcoded stuff modders can't mess with. If modders had access to change the hard coded stuff they would make stuff that would make the DLCs look tiny. For free.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Almost every aspect/mechanic in the game feels shallow or like a proof of concept rather than an actual game or mechanic to engage with. I feel like there is a cycle I go through where the idea of playing sounds amazing so I start up a new colony and only a few hours in I'm reminded of all the small design choices that make me stop playing. So I'll try modding the game to state that feel playable but it always feel like just a coat of paint over a crumbling house. I bought all the DLCs as they came out meaning I had it easy with the mod-scheme, however most don't require it at all! If any its just royalty.
However if you do happen to pick any two I'd say Biotech and Royalty are the most common ones
Easy to pickup, and a non-vertical curve for gameplay, as it scales with your resources/wealth
Similar to dwarf fortress in some aspects. its modding community is great. And its quite easy to trouble shoot mods just by simply looking at their compatibility pages. Skills are explained, along with the math behind them. And learning skills for pawns is really simple.
TLDR: Great game, DLCS are kinda expensive but can be bought one at a time. Easy to learn. Great modding community.

People will use arguments like, "The base game is perfectly fine, just play it and if you want more, get the DLCs later." This ignores the fact that game developers commonly leave out features that feel like they belong in the base game so they can sell them later. I'm not claiming that's what happened here, but it easily could be, and nobody would be the wiser for it.
Fact is, you could probably ignore Royalty and Anomaly, but Biotech and Ideology fit so naturally into Rimworld's futuristic colony setting they feel like they should have been present from the start. They could have been released as free updates. But no. They effectively raise the price of the game from $35 to $80.
It certainly doesn't help that Rimworld and its DLCs have never gone on sale for more than 20% off. What is this? Nintendo? "Our games are timeless and don't depreciate in value"? I understand a developer not wanting to play the sale game, but when you're refusing to meaningfully discount anything AND offering DLC that rival the base game's price, you have to realize what you're doing.
If you want to buy Rimworld, and all its DLCs, at base price, you will pay $150. In another year or two that'll probably be $175.

After 200 hours of failed attempts and various flawed colonies that have failed, I have finally built a successful colony built upon probably 10 hours worth of guides and all of my previous experience. RimWorld is a game built upon failure and what you can learn from it, the one successful colony I have created is built on the dozen that have failed.
RimWorld is the type of game that looks extremely complex from the outside, and while it is it also eases you into it as you progress. I feel like this style of progression makes RimWorld easy to learn but very hard to master. The game guides you through it instead of throwing everything at you which also makes each step more rewarding since it feels like a true accomplishment as you try to reach ship launch. This style of progression also makes it more accessible.

One DLC for half the price of the main game. The problem is that they want you to pay for the base version of the game and then pay extra to fully enjoy the main game features, while you should be able to use these features to the fullest without overpaying — after all, that’s exactly what you bought the base version of the game for. This has already been discussed in DEATH. Apart from the feeling that “Ideology” should generally be included in the base Rimworld game\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
