\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI played through twice, once solo and once with friends. With friends, it's a romp of beer and songs and "rub some stone on it!" as you reclaim Moria one zone at a time. By yourself it's the same thing, only now the atmosphere is oppressive since you can hear it now (in a good way). It's like all the cheer your dwarves bring is to fight back the gloom that swells within Khazad-Dum.
The voice lines by both friend and foe add charm to the game, as well as plenty of lore you can read through that feels LoTR at least, though I am no scholar on if it's accurate. Your dwarf sings a lot of folk music too: when mining, drinking, and rebuilding fallen monuments. There's enough variety that it doesn't feel stale, and some are even catchy. Moria itself also received some care, with little details like remnants of the Fellowship's journey dotting the way (this is set in the Fourth Age).
I don't have as much praise for the gameplay itself. The tag says "open world survival craft", but it's actually rather linear, though that isn't inherently a bad thing. The game is segmented into zones (Westgate, Elven District, etc.) that have some kind of barrier you need to clear before moving on (i.e. get a stronger pickaxe or rebuild some stairs). So you go off and explore the branching paths within those zones, gathering materials and rebuilding statues to learn crafting recipes. This is fine on its own, but the game is pseudo-randomly generated, using rooms like tilesets to build the game world whenever there isn't a unique location. You'll be seeing the same ones fairly often, sometimes back-to-back at its most egregious. This can cause issues with resources as I learned in multiplayer. Salt for making leather became the most precious resource for equipping seven players, as it only appears in one zone with few ways to obtain more outside of creating another world to siphon from. In singleplayer I had two whole palettes of the stuff.
Of course you're not alone in the depths. Orcs, wargs, and trolls linger within Moria, and they're hungry for dwarf. Combat is... fine, if a little odd. Armor gives you extra health bars for tanking hits from enemies, and though there are different fighting styles, I felt like 1-handed plus shield was ultimately the most efficient for survival. Going two-handed and dodge-rolling certainly works, but since stamina is used both for rolling and power attacks (but not blocking), the gauge gets spread thin. Honestly I wished there was another weapon with the halberd's fighting style, but I never saw one. There are consumables, called abakhs, that work like buff potions. Attack power, poison resistance, sprinting costs no stamina, that kind of thing. They don't last very long, mostly enough to get you through an encounter. You can also engrave runes into your weapons, enchanting them with fire-damage-over-time and the like.
There are three main damage types--slash, pierce, and blunt--and these are more or less effective against certain enemies (blunt beats armored, for instance). This doesn't make a huge difference however, because what really determines your damage is what tier weapon you have, and that's going to be the biggest pain point for players in my opinion. The game's difficulty curve oscillates a little too much between "This is really easy" and "I'm doing 3 damage this is going to take forever" for every. single. zone. What it turns into is either dealing with damage sponges out of sheer spite or sneaking around until you get what you need for a new weapon and tearing through the place. But then the choice gets stripped away when the current-tier of orcs you've been avoiding decide to lay siege to your base and now you're waking up in your bedroll after catching a bad case of death.
With all of this put together, this was pretty much a YouTube-on-second-monitor game for me since I wasn't really engaged unless there was dialogue between my dwarf and an NPC like Aric the Raven.
I own the Durin's Folk DLC, but didn't put much time into it after beating the main game. Didn't seem like my cup of tea going from a survival crafting game to base management.

Downloaded it back, only to realize it's a paid DLC that improves the campaign. Makes no sense. Predatory business practice IMO. Even has negative reviews, so no reason to invest. However, the expansion falls flat for me still. It changes the game from an repetitive exploration game (with very light survival elements) to a light colony-management/shopkeeper-simulator post-game: you recruit NPC Dwarves to craft orders for you, and then you sell the orders to traders to then buy trader-specific items to then have your NPC Dwarves craft more things so you can sell more things. There are not enough equipable awards from these traders to show off your wealth--just more trade-good icons you dump into a chest.
The expedition system is not very fun for me. It is essentially a lore-sanctioned version of opening up a new sandbox server for you to export resources back into your main world, except this time you don't need to quit out to the main menu.
Ultimately, I find this game to be very ambitious with lots of cool systems and ideas, but none of them are fleshed out enough for me to really dive into--even considering the newest expansion. The only excellent thing about it remains the LotR paintjob and its faithfulness to source material.

I like LotR but am not a mega-fan. I really wanted to like this game, but after going all-out completionist on it, I am left feeling unrewarded for my time and unimpressive with the actual gameplay itself.
This plays more of a LotR-world exploration game where you walk around, look at Moria's architecture, and roleplay as Dwarves. There is a light story tagged on, but it serves as an excuse for why you're exploring Moria in the first place + as a cue-in for Gimli to appear. Combat is hack-and-slash, but mechanically tedious (spam-click is max dps into high-hp enemies). Survival, despite being a survival game, is overwhelmingly easy. Base-building has many beautiful assets, but the tooling surrounding it gets frustrating/requires a third party mod to enhance + there is little need actually build a large base--just sprint to the end. Farming + food/beer (aka potion) system is too simplistic for my taste (there are ingredients that have 1 specific use-case, and that use-case is quickly antiquated once you move to the next stage). Exploration, which is the biggest draw of the game, got stale for me quickly, as theres only ~3 room types per region (and some regions use the same tileset).
My biggest gripe, however, is the way gear progression works. When you enter a new zone, your current weapons do reduced damage to that zone's enemies. To unlock the next tier of weapons/armor, you need to basically complete the zone. So in order to get gear to beat the zone, you need to have already beaten the zone...? This pacing ends up feeling like you are always under-equipped. This is further exacerbated by the tedious combat mentioned above.
OVERALL:
As a survival game, it's just okay. It feels unfinished, unpolished, but very pretty (LotR-accuracy-wise).
I think the game is only worth it if you like the shiny LotR paintjob and/or if you enjoy roleplaying as a Tolkien Dwarf. You'll get a lot of cool trivia, namedrops, visual representations of obscure things mentioned in the books via songs, settings, story, and NPCs.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tThe expedition system is not very fun for me. It is essentially a lore-sanctioned version of opening up a new sandbox server for you to export resources back into your main world, except this time you don't need to quit out to the main menu.
Ultimately, I find this game to be very ambitious with lots of cool systems and ideas, but none of them are fleshed out enough for me to really dive into--even considering the newest expansion. The only excellent thing about it remains the LotR paintjob and its faithfulness to source material.

I'm glad the developers have continued supporting the game, constantly adding new features and improvements that make it even better than it was at launch.

It's not perfect, and combat isn't particularly challenging or mechanically deep, but that's not really the point. It's a fun, satisfying loop that keeps you coming back for more. The ending was a bit anti-climactic, and although Duran's Folk was a great concept DLC, it left all of us wanting more.
Really looking forward to the sequel. Sounds promising. The team mechanics were great, and the semi open-world survival is a lot of fun with the lore and genre. While keeping the game fresher longer, it can be annoying looking for certain items since the game never puts them in the same spot from one game to the next.
Not sure I would recommend the DLC's, they kind of always feel like a cash grab and fall way short of the main games. I guess if you can get them for couple $ it might be worth it but not at the full price point. Some of the reviews for the DLC's tell the story...
