\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's sad because there is so much to love about this game, but every time the game does something amazing it's held back by the developers doing something stupid. So the highlight why you should hold off on giving them any money, here you go:
Gun: Sound, look and feel amazing, some of the best gunplay I've personally experienced. Understandably for a zombie game with resource management, ammo is rare, so guns are really valuable, right? RIGHT? Well, yes and no, guns are really useful, but instead of hardcore realism, its, just punishing for the sake of punishing, a .357 at 10ft against an unarmoured head doesn't always kill, 9mm from 2ft away is still minimum of two shots. They try and force you to treat weapons like a last resort but shift the gameplay to make guns one of the only viable ways to fight, and even then its unreliable at times.
Melee: Nothing is more satisfying then swinging an axe through a zombie's skull, well at least it is satisfying when the axe makes contact and deals damage, CONGRATS! You watched the axe go through the zombies head, but unfortunately there was no collision detection, the zombie remains unphased, you've now been bitten and spend the rest of the match being a pill addict. Minor gripe -> I get it, realistically very few people can behead a zombie with one clean hit, but the melee weapons are intentionally weak, to the point that they are better used as crowd control to push zombies back. Because of this many situations demand the use of guns to survive (see previous sections for example of my 13th reason why). Because you are better off using melee to push enemies back, bladed weapons become worthless (except maybe the fire axe), as bladed weapons deal "more damage" with less knockback/stun, meaning you still have to hit them just as many times, but now you don't need a bug for enemies to shrug off a hit and still bite you, congrats, you're now chasing pills for the rest of the match.
Progression and characters: You're character levels up, the more you play as them the stronger they get with perks and invested starting gear. If they die, they are dead, gone, all that time and investment disappears, that makes your character and your choices very important. As for reasons mentioned earlier and some more to come, there are a lot of ways you die and lose your character that are out of your hands. Meaning no matter how good you are or how smart you are, the developers have taken away from your own agency, they have left countless ways for you to lose your progress and all the time and energy you invested into your character, because "Hardcore", because challenging gameplay isn't enough sometimes you just need it raw and unlubed.
Multiplayer and team based gameplay: This is a game where you need people, and also the source of many other complaints from users regarding servers and server populations but has been covered plenty. What I want to call out is that even if you get past everything else, you avoid the bugs that will get you bitten, you get lucky and find infinite ammo or the literal holy grail, this game requires teams in order to complete missions because of the volume of enemies, the objectives that leave you exposed while you work, because the game centers around teammates. And yet, despite how vital they are, they, more than anything else will get you killed, this mostly revolves around public lobbies and playing with randoms. But this is a fundamental flaw of the game, the gameplay pushes teamwork as a necessity, yet rewards players for being selfish. You get a lot of players running around ignoring objectives to grab all the resources, you get some people running around and shooting drawing hordes then leaving you to deal with it alone. I get it, humans are one of the biggest challenges in a zombie apocalypse, once again, "hardcore" gameplay, taking away a sense of agency and losing all the time and energy you put into characters because of factors outside of your control. This is why I log off after one maybe two matches, why I see my friends log off, why I see people quit to desktop because the gameplay pushes the thought, "I would rather play something else" and "why did I spend any money on this ♥♥♥♥". Now if you are lucky, enough people die/leave that you can get early extraction and save your character, well until you find the early extract is locked behind a door or barrier you have to complete, which you need those other players who are dead/disconnected, and once again you lose your character who you've sunk all this time into.
Zombies, levels, and horrible collisions: Dear god the zombies look and sound amazing, they fit the aesthetics of the game perfectly, love em, love seeing the apocalypic sets and level design. Sadly the zombies aren't the only threat, running away from some zombies? Unfortunately that 1.5 inch tall thing on the ground has a hitbox large enough you can't walk over it, so you have to climb, a several second animation, ooh sorry, too slow they have swarmed you and if you survive somehow you better start finding some pills. Oh look, you knocked a zombie on the ground, lemme bash its head in, oh, sorry its on the ground there is maybe a 25% chance your weapon actually connects with it. Oh look, that zombie has a helmet? Let me shoot its exposed face so im not wasting ammo, sorry, the helmet still sucks up that first hit, because realistically a construction hardhat can protect you from .308 at 5ft away.
"Hardcore" gameplay is great isn't it? Realism in games is so awesome! I love bending over and spreading my cheeks for Torn Banner's thick and veiny..., anyways, I played more than 2 hours so im stuck with it, so please, please please please, give it a few months before you sink even a penny into this. I want them to fix the game because it has the potential to be so amazing, but god do they need to lube the game a little.
Also, final minor note, progression in the game is meh, perks don't really do that much for characters, and the three slots you have on the home screen for starting items, yeah no matter how much gear you find you don't keep it you only start with those 3 slots of items. So it makes a lot of gameplay and looting feel really pointless, especially when half the map is locations with no objectives, all that time looting is just pointless unless you need weapons/ammo/meds in the moment.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game is in a solid state now. It's finally hitting it's stride that it SHOULD have started with during it's initial release. Almost all complaints from 2 years ago have been properly addressed and have been ironed out legitimately. The shining elements that it did show back then, can finally truly shine brightly now. The game understands and completely nails what makes zombie games fun. The zombies. If you're a romero fan, you'll find a lot to love here with the zombies in this game. They actually improved alot of visual feedback on visceral gore and feedback on zombies. Depending on where and what you hit, it will be reflected. You can bash and crack parts of the skull wide open. Straight up unhinge and rip off jaws. This applies to shooting as well. Depending on the caliber of your firearm, it will reflect the type of damage you do. 22 punches holes in heads, 9mm cracks open skulls, 45 punches through skulls, and 357 blast holes behind skulls. Shotguns shreds and tears apart faces and chests, etc. The core gameplay of its combat is the best part of the game, as it should be. The maps are expansive and large but still maintain an incredible level of detail and environmental story telling. The visuals, sound design, and overall presentation are fantastic and very immersive. Speaking of sound, I'm very happy to hear ThOughTs OST finally getting the proper mixing it deserves. The new tracks are great and I can finally actually hear it now, as the music even when maxed out on volume was way too quiet in the past. The overhaul to the loadout system is a good change aswell. No more being able to eventually just be able to have the best weapons in the game at the very start, or straight up bring a literal cure to virus just on their person at the start of the match. The newest map Raven Rock is quickly becoming one of my favorite maps, right next to powerplant. Matchmaking is working as intended finally and I'm able to find matches quickly, though probably due to the renewed playercount and addition of crossplay. The game is solid, but I still do have some criticisms of it. The first thing that sticks out of my mind is the lack luster cosmetics that was promised to be expanded. It isn't. it's 3 upper and lower garments, with 5 new gloves and 2 new voicepacks. Most of the garments you can earn and spend credits to get, where already in the game previously and now have to earn again. There are also DLC outfits, which is just dirt in my face honestly. Could have just been 4 more cosmetics to actually grind and earn. Despite praising the presentation of the maps, mechanically and from a gameplay design stand point, not all maps are made equal. And half of the objective maps vary from being decent to kind of unfun and repetitive. Lewiston in particular is probably my least favorite map and ironically enough the fastest map to finish. Speaking of repetitive, I do believe that's another thing i will levy against the game. I don't believe even in its current state, there are enough alternating main and sub objectives that will keep the playerbase coming back to keep playing them. Some of the objectives can be pretty drab, boring to do, and sometimes only require one player to actually do it, rather than encouraging a team effort on everyone's part. Another criticism is the skill system. This is a personal grievance and distaste but I do not care for it. The whole risk of permadeath and losing the character and the skills gained is lost on me. The tension from the moment to moment gameplay is plenty enough. I'm not saying the skills aren't useful, but this whole system is just shallow and carries no weight in decision making or character building in any way. Could've been development time spent on more cosmetics if you ask me. This isn't my personal critique but I do see and have heard in game from other players that they are not running the game all that well despite the claim of optimizing the game in this update. I, myself am feeling the optimization improvements significantly. The game is running a lot more smoother for me since initial launch and the 0.9.0 update. So this could be an GPU/CPU specific issue. Also the new voicepacks are just cringey. And not in the fun, cheesy way. More like annoying. Trying way too hard to be quirky and relatable. I could compare apples to oranges and complain about the differences between the first game and this one. Really dive into small and niche things about what the sequel got rid off in removing minor game mechanics. The entirety of not having mod support, which just hurts the replayability that the first game had. However I'll judge this game on its own merits. The game is good. But it needs to continue it's momentum and add more. More of..well everything. Some weapons are still missing from the first game, like the fan favorite AK, SKS and the glock. All of which I fully assume will be added down the road. More unique infected can help add more variety to gameplay. More maps are obvious. Overall, after 2 years later, now in its current state, I give it a 7/10. Is this game a worthy sucessor to the original? Debately now, yes I believe so. In short:
1. Some missions take too long with smaller 2-3 player pre-made lobbies.
2. No option to mute players is very bad.
3. This is co-opetition when auto filling squads. Randoms can hoover up loot quite often.
4. Some bad bugs persist.
5. Would still recommend, but only if you're okay with the above. Rest of the game is great.
In long:
1. We tried Pottsville on Normal difficulty with group size of 3 last night, aaaand we just didn't have time to finish. Started at 10pm, came off at 1am and had to kill off our characters as a result. We managed 68% research obtained in the last section of the map, and we legit were too tired to carry on. We didn't realise early extraction was a thing, but after doing early extraction recently at 28 hrs, we noticed it it gets rid of ALL rewards including supply picked up during the mission... Ye, that's a big yikes, it should at least reward like 50% of the supply we've taken the time to collect. Too harsh.
2. Rude/unaware people coughing, cursing, shouting etc over open mic is quite bad when you can't mute.
3. People hoover up loot, hoard, barely ever drop stuff (and when they do it's just into a random puddle that you'll miss as it's technically their junk). That needs addressing considering the game design of missions (e.g. having to loot huge areas for search-and-find style objectives) seems balanced around 8 players.
4. Equipping medium and long range scopes can create a zoom bug, where you literally just don't have magnified zoom despite the scope being on the gun. Oftentimes, this causes you to need to find a break in the action to unequip/re-equip it, so I instead just avoid equipping them in high-action moments.
5. Even at 17 hrs with the above gripes, I still love the hardcore gameplay and I'm eager to play more, so that's worth noting. It's got very solid and polished foundations and systems, but that's what can frustrate newer fans like myself: it just needs some quality of life system improvements or more features to really be up there with the greats of the genre. Definitely hope they address the above though as it's quite significant and will put off a lot of casuals & solo queue people.
**REVIEW AT 4.5 HRS**
In short:
* It forces skill shots with scarce ammo (+ feels gooood).
* It forces quick decision making with the stamina system.
* It rewards team composition through the character skills (e.g. medics).
* The radial inventory menu is really intuitive (shows weight too) and is very console-friendly.
* It has a good gameplay loop re permadeath and persistent account leveling for good cosmetics & customisation.
It is a good game from my 1.0 experience - would definitely recommended if you like challenging but rewarding co-op gameplay.
In long:
Seeing 60% positive from recent reviews after my first impression at 4.5 hours is what made me make a review - because it really does deserve higher than 60% in its current state, and that needs to be explained to those on the fence.
Negative reviews from Early Access supporters & fans of the first game are justified re the devs changing the gameplay loop significantly, and I get why they wouldn't recommend. So, I'll add a disclaimer to say that my recommendation is based on my first impression as of the 1.0 full release.
You know that feeling when you play Arma 3 or Project Zomboid etc where it slowly builds up to that spontaneous and amazing firefight or moment that you always remember? But chasing that next amazing moment can feel like it's taking too long, so you start to feel burnout building? Well, this game feels like it's nailed a formula to significantly shorten that build-up time to those moments. Not gonna lie, with how good the gunplay is, the balance with scarce ammo and importance of co-op teamwork, it really creates those moments quickly and consistently in my time so far - specifically on Objective mode.
I just had a 1.5 hour-long match where only 3 out of 8 of us made it to the helicopter extraction zone after kiting hordes in a COD: Zombies fashion around a factory. I looked back to see one of the randoms die below the stairs to the horde just meters away, and then looked up to see the other dude start to spasm and reanimate just as the helicopter arrived overhead... I then got chased down by a sprinter that finished me off, holy ♥♥♥♥... But, jeeeez it was INSANELY fun. Some of the most exhilarating gameplay since the peak of Back 4 Blood on the hardest difficulties.
That's not even to mention the levels of infection your character can go through, and the character names appearing above reanimated players whose loot explodes out of them like a Loot Midget in Borderlands. Very satisfying and polished.
**FINAL THOUGHTS**
It combines the feel of Left 4 Dead but on a much larger open-world style scale where you have to find the other 7 players in the server, and to team up to complete tasks leading up to the finale where you extract. In short:
1. Some missions take too long with smaller 2-3 player pre-made lobbies.
2. No option to mute players is very bad.
3. This is co-opetition when auto filling squads. Randoms can hoover up loot quite often.
4. Some bad bugs persist.
5. Would still recommend, but only if you're okay with the above. Rest of the game is great.
In long:
1. We tried Pottsville on Normal difficulty with group size of 3 last night, aaaand we just didn't have time to finish. Started at 10pm, came off at 1am and had to kill off our characters as a result. We managed 68% research obtained in the last section of the map, and we legit were too tired to carry on. We didn't realise early extraction was a thing, but after doing early extraction recently at 28 hrs, we noticed it it gets rid of ALL rewards including supply picked up during the mission... Ye, that's a big yikes, it should at least reward like 50% of the supply we've taken the time to collect. Too harsh.
2. Rude/unaware people coughing, cursing, shouting etc over open mic is quite bad when you can't mute.
3. People hoover up loot, hoard, barely ever drop stuff (and when they do it's just into a random puddle that you'll miss as it's technically their junk). That needs addressing considering the game design of missions (e.g. having to loot huge areas for search-and-find style objectives) seems balanced around 8 players.
4. Equipping medium and long range scopes can create a zoom bug, where you literally just don't have magnified zoom despite the scope being on the gun. Oftentimes, this causes you to need to find a break in the action to unequip/re-equip it, so I instead just avoid equipping them in high-action moments.
5. Even at 17 hrs with the above gripes, I still love the hardcore gameplay and I'm eager to play more, so that's worth noting. It's got very solid and polished foundations and systems, but that's what can frustrate newer fans like myself: it just needs some quality of life system improvements or more features to really be up there with the greats of the genre. Definitely hope they address the above though as it's quite significant and will put off a lot of casuals & solo queue people.
**REVIEW AT 4.5 HRS**
In short:
* It forces skill shots with scarce ammo (+ feels gooood).
* It forces quick decision making with the stamina system.
* It rewards team composition through the character skills (e.g. medics).
* The radial inventory menu is really intuitive (shows weight too) and is very console-friendly.
* It has a good gameplay loop re permadeath and persistent account leveling for good cosmetics & customisation.
It is a good game from my 1.0 experience - would definitely recommended if you like challenging but rewarding co-op gameplay.
In long:
Seeing 60% positive from recent reviews after my first impression at 4.5 hours is what made me make a review - because it really does deserve higher than 60% in its current state, and that needs to be explained to those on the fence.
Negative reviews from Early Access supporters & fans of the first game are justified re the devs changing the gameplay loop significantly, and I get why they wouldn't recommend. So, I'll add a disclaimer to say that my recommendation is based on my first impression as of the 1.0 full release.
You know that feeling when you play Arma 3 or Project Zomboid etc where it slowly builds up to that spontaneous and amazing firefight or moment that you always remember? But chasing that next amazing moment can feel like it's taking too long, so you start to feel burnout building? Well, this game feels like it's nailed a formula to significantly shorten that build-up time to those moments. Not gonna lie, with how good the gunplay is, the balance with scarce ammo and importance of co-op teamwork, it really creates those moments quickly and consistently in my time so far - specifically on Objective mode.
I just had a 1.5 hour-long match where only 3 out of 8 of us made it to the helicopter extraction zone after kiting hordes in a COD: Zombies fashion around a factory. I looked back to see one of the randoms die below the stairs to the horde just meters away, and then looked up to see the other dude start to spasm and reanimate just as the helicopter arrived overhead... I then got chased down by a sprinter that finished me off, holy ♥♥♥♥... But, jeeeez it was INSANELY fun. Some of the most exhilarating gameplay since the peak of Back 4 Blood on the hardest difficulties.
That's not even to mention the levels of infection your character can go through, and the character names appearing above reanimated players whose loot explodes out of them like a Loot Midget in Borderlands. Very satisfying and polished.
**FINAL THOUGHTS**
It combines the feel of Left 4 Dead but on a much larger open-world style scale where you have to find the other 7 players in the server, and to team up to complete tasks leading up to the finale where you extract. The best part is teamwork. Nothing builds friendship faster than watching your buddy get surrounded by zombies while everyone else debates whether saving him is worth the ammunition.

Believe it or not, there is NO MUTE PLAYER option, you can block players, and guess what, it does nothing. The only option is to completely turn off voice chat? Not to mention I couldn't even adjust the voice chat volume either! So this review is negative until that gets addressed because the game is simply not fun to play completely silent and it is not fun to play with my immersion being tested by unaware gamers that don't know how to adjust their own mic settings. If it doesn't get addressed I'm refunding, didn't expect to die on the hill like this but cmon, it's 2026 and there are tried and true methods that almost every multiplayer game uses for mic comms.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

However since they introduced cross platform play there are random moments in your game where things will be running smoothly then the next moment your at 600ping and cant do anything. Can't fire your weapon, can't heal yourself, can't vault over objects. This is a perma death game where these things matter. I feel like Im playing in dawn of the dead of something or even a left 4 dead brother. Use a 2 handed melee weapon like the bat or shovel and it will kill in 2 hits it changes battles entirely and you can easily kill a pack in front of a store if needed. Pros
* The gunplay is insanely good. The sound design and recoil make the guns actually feel heavy. It feels like you're holding a real gun. Take the 1911, for example. You can actually feel that .45 when you shoot it. It hits hard and sounds great. *Nowadays, you can pick up a .50 cal in some games and it sounds like you're shooting ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ popcorn*. Good gunplay has become a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gem.
* The melee combat is really satisfying. the blunt weapons in this game feel like they actually have weight behind them. I don't know what other people experienced, but personally, I love swinging a hammer into a zombie's head and watching it get blown apart. It just feels good.
* The maps are crazy good. I really like the map design and the atmosphere they create. And I genuinely don't understand people who say the first game had a massively better atmosphere.
Yeah, I played No More Room in Hell 1 too. I spent many hours playing it over LAN, so I absolutely understand the nostalgia. It was an amazing game for its time.
Cons
* Zombie respawning. This is probably my biggest complaint. here it can feel pretty weird, especially when you're playing solo. You carefully clear an entire house with melee weapons and maybe one magazine of 9mm. You finally clear everything, go inside to loot, heal, reload, and take a breath...
Then suddenly two or three zombies spawn nearby or even inside the area you just cleared.
BUT — they actually have a reason for doing this.
The respawning system is basically there to keep players moving toward the center of the map and prevent people from completely locking down an area.
Personally, though, I still don't like it.
I really enjoy that feeling of knowing, "Okay, I cleared this place. Now I can heal up and etc before i move on."
As you can probably tell, I don't have a high-end PC, so I already expect to have some performance problems with modern games at higher settings.
But for anyone with a similar PC:
With medium settings and AMD FSR, you can get around 70 FPS.
Personally, I found that mixing low/medium settings with frame generation gives me a much more stable experience.

The first time my friend and I played this game was during the first free weekend. Even back then, we didn't have many problems with the game. The gunplay was solid, the melee combat was good, and yeah, there were some bugs, like desync issues and hitbox problems with melee combat.My personal review of the current state

You get very, very limited ammo, which would be fine if the weapons were even decent. Instead, you find yourself bashing the heads of zombies over and over again with little effect. You don't "feel" it at all. Additionally, you MUST have a larger party to play the game. There is absolutely zero scaling for party size. What this means is, a party of 2 almost certainly won't be able to make it through a round completing objectives. Instead, you are lucky to even make it out alive. There is potential here, but so far, I cannot recommend this game at all.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
