Everything is straight forward, not much thinking needed, every animal is easy to spot, and overall less surprising than TOEM 1 with less locations to visit.

The Game is much shorter than the first game, I finished it just under four hours. The original took me twice as long to finish. The first Toem has 6 areas (and 1 DLC area). This game has 5. If you take away the starter areas and the ending areas, the main playable areas are 4 to 3. These new levels feel much smaller and more streamlined.
The gameplay is also considerably easier. In the first game I had to use a guide to solve some of the puzzles. In Toem 2 every thing is just laid out in really obvious spots and places.
Most of the quests are just, "pick up some items off the ground", or press the A button on something, or "hang this thing wherever you feel like it there's no solution", or "go take a picture of this specific thing".
The character in the comedy club is a great example. He has a joke about bicycles, but he can't remember what they look like. He pretty much just tells you to take a picture of one of the many bikes around the level. Many solutions are like this, where you are simply told to do something and not think about it too much.
The new "mechanics'" of this game are the tools and the Jump button, but to be fair they did not really do much with the mechanics. Tools are simple puzzles and only usable in the level they are found in. Jumping just adds some verticality to the worlds, but most of the jumping "puzzles" are really simple.

I also have to say that the ending of the first game was far more memorable.

In the first game, you climb a high mountain that offers a view of another brightly glowing peak. In the second, there isn't a real "challenge"—or rather, it just doesn't evoke the same feeling as the first one. It’s simply a tree bursting into colorful bloom—only this time, you aren't alone.

It is a beautiful, artistic game, has beautiful music and lovebl Characters even though it is very short; still, it makes for a lovely sequel.

My main issue with this game is the difficulty. I feel everything is spelled out for you and it's way easier that the first. I remember having to think in TOEM 1 when solving puzzles and having that aha moment when I figured something out. I'm not getting the same thing here. Some of the fun and magic is still found in TOEM 2, but the world feels so much smaller and the game is way shorter than the first one, even if you take your sweet time just looking around and having photoshoots. I was surprised that a lot of the stuff we saw in the trailer was pretty much what the game has to offer, which was a bit disappointing to see. I thought once we would get all the tools we would have to combine those tool using skills in a new area, as I thought there would me more to explore, but got surprised when I loaded the game in and had 90% of it already finished on the save file after exploring just 3 areas. It's still a fun game and I love the updated graphics, songs, fun characters, funny references to pop culture and outfits, but I do feel like the full price is a bit too much so definitely get it on sale to get more of your moneys worth in regards to the play time.
I highly recommend getting the first game and playing through that. And then if you feel like you want a bit more TOEM in your life, try this one out, but be prepared that it might not be as magical experience as the first installment.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I rarely write reviews on Steam, but I feel like I need to write something for this one.
The first TOEM has been one of my all-time fav games for the past few years. It also accompanied me through a really difficult period of my life, so it genuinely means a lot to me. I bought TOEM 2 almost immediately after release after looking forward to it for so long, which makes it especially sad to say that I finished it feeling deeply disappointed—and even a little betrayed.
TOEM 2 barely feels like an evolution of the first game. There are technically new features, but almost nothing made me feel that the series had grown or found something new to say. Even some of the small but brilliant ideas from the original, like capturing special NPC moments and getting a shining photo, are simply gone.
The music was also a big disappointment. I’ve listened to the original soundtrack countless times and it has become one of my most-listened-to game soundtracks in recent years. But the music here often feels like a few repeating tunes or motifs rather than something that develops into a memorable musical world. It just doesn’t feel nearly as immersive or distinctive anymore.
I could say much more, including about the narrative, but I honestly don’t want to spend that much time listing everything that disappointed me.
I always thought you make a sequel because you have something new to say, something new to explore, or simply the ambition to create something even better.

TOEM 2 advertises the special tools you unlock to be able to further interact with the world around you, but the hammer is ONLY ever used in area you get the hammer. The scissors are ONLY ever used in the area you get the scissors. These are not abilities or upgrades, these are keys. The screwdriver opens the screwdriver door and then you forget about it.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tTOEM 2, like the original TOEM, is a charming game about photography, (very) light puzzling, and a beautifully relaxing atmosphere. I absolutely recommend it, but would encourage anybody who hasn't played the first game to do so as well, because I think I prefer 1 over 2.
Where TOEM 2 improved on the visuals and gameplay, it suffers in length and, in my personal opinion, impact. It took me about 8 hours to finish everything in the first game (including 90ish minutes for the free dlc area), TOEM 2 only took me around 3,5 hours and when the achievements like "You completed all climibing challenges!" popped, I was genuinely taken aback at how this could have been the final one already, but it was.
On terms of impact, and I'll keep this as spoiler free as possible, the way you reach the end in the first one felt ... almost cathartic? Like you achieved something. While 2s path to the end fell flat for me personally.

Toem 2, unsurprisingly, follows in the footsteps of Toem, you venture from location to location helping the locals with your camera, so if you enjoyed the first one, as the core gameplay loop is unaltered, you will enjoy this one. It's fun, it's funny, all in all it's a good time. However, that is where the positives end for the time being, for this game did disappoint me a little. the first thing I noticed is that this game is far less charming and whimsical than the first, that's not to say it's not charming and whimsical, it certainly has its moments, l absolutely love the worm you befriend in Cropten, and I love that 'fishermans tune' is used as a light motif throughout, but the charm definitely feels dialed back a tad in comparison to the first game. And the characters not as memorable. Possibly however, I was just expecting more returning characters, and plots, like the secret agent that communicates with you through a tube, or the king that photobombs you in the sandcastle, or the cosmic deer. I would have loved to see their return. Another disappointment is the lack of returning regions. I was expecting the return of the regions explored in the first game, updated and expanded, in addition to lots of new ones too, but beyond Homelanda, they did not appear... I was also disappointed with the actual Toem phenomenon of this game, I felt it was far less visually compelling than the first. although that is a bit of a nitpick. Considering this, it does feel quite short and I was definitely expecting something longer and with more depth. I'm assuming there will be additional content down the line, as Toem received the Basto update, and I absolutely cannot wait for it, partly because Basto was the absolute best of Toem, so I’m sure whatever update Toem 2 gets will be the best of it too, but also because it really needs more content. Again, I do like this game, it's great fun and does have its charm, so I would absolutely recommend it, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who was expecting more. I am excited to see what something we made do next though, as Toem is amazing and Toem 2 is very good, so I'm sure their next project will be incredible.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I've played through Toem 1 dozens of times and the experience it offered was immersive and the gameplay felt new. Every puzzle felt rewarding to solve, and everywhere you looked something was crawling or flying or swaying. Your camera had filters and your album had titles!

You wake up in the same place as you do in the original and are given almost the same beginner tasks to acclimate you to the game and its mechanics. You’re then given 3 unique locations with different tasks to do before reaching the ending… which is also extremely similar to the original one. It almost felt as if they took the beginning and ending of the first TOEM and sandwiched shorter, easier levels in between. I was expecting an expansion of the first story, but this felt more like when a classic movie is remade into something more modern and less charming.
I could look past all of this if it weren’t for the lack of overall content paired with the price. The first TOEM gave me 12 hours of playtime. This one is the exact same base price as the original, yet only gave me 6 hours (which would’ve been less if I’d played it on its own without multitasking). Other people finished it in 3 hours.

That was almost 10 hours that I spent playing with the "swap look and zoom input" option turned on, and I played it that way the first time as well; I absolutely adore TOEM - it's one of my favorite indie games of all time - but I do unfortunately find the default Camera-Mode controls to be pretty uncomfortable and unintuitive. This option just isn't available in TOEM 2. There actually aren't any control rebind options at all. This is both a serious accessibility issue as well as simply a very basic quality of life feature to be missing.
I saw that back in June, the devs actually said on the TOEM 2 Steam Discussions that rebind options would be added to the finished release. So, I am refunding the game until it's finished. I very much look forward to trying it again soon!

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWay too short. Very simple puzzles. The NPCs are so 2D and bland compared to the characters in the first TOEM as well as no special photos of said NPCs. The new mechanics are cool but only used a handful of times in each level but never outside the level they are introduced in.
