\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIf you like Cosmoteer, you'll enjoy this game too! I wouldn't say either game competes with each other, just more variety if you like this genre. What I do enjoy a lot with eXoSpace is the direct control you have over your ship, while Cosmoteer is more like you're commanding your ship(s) (I do know Cosmoteer has a direct control mode, but it's more intuitive/the primary focus in eXoSpace). The roguelite incremental progression of eXoSpace is a nice change of pace, with a goal and bossfights to experience. It's a lot more objective-oriented compared to the sandbox experience of Cosmoteer.
Overall it's a fun experience and I hope the devs continue expanding upon this.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Bosses tend to rely on cheesy mechanics for difficulty, and can completely ignore the build system, retaining full effectiveness until you destroy their core even if every other part has been stripped. They also are frequently covered in invulnerable sections until you reach a certain phase, with no way of telling which part you should be shooting at.
For example one of the bosses randomly places up to 4 summoning beacons on the map that will start rapidly spawning in enemies continuously until destroyed. They can spawn far enough away from you that they will not show up on radar, and also share the same radar icon as the boss and the enemies it spawns once you get close enough, so after they have been going for ~30 seconds it becomes impossible to find them with 30 enemies on screen. It also has a shield that if it overlaps your ship, any AoE damage you do will be reflected back, pretty much instantly killing your ship.
Another will start shooting off multiple waves of bullets right before it dies with no warning, so if you happened to be running a close range build, you die and get to do the whole fight over.
It wants to be a bullet hell, but you also end up so un-maneuverable that you can't actually dodge.
Building the ships is enjoyable, until you get a piece you want to use that isn't a square/rectangle/triangle, then you start having small gaps all over your design because the pieces don't fit together properly, or the connection points dont line up even though the pieces are the same size. There isn't really a benefit to getting bigger/rarer parts, as for example all reactors provide the same 2 energy per antimatter, and actually get less metal efficient the larger they get.
Friendly AI will happily sit right behind you trying to shoot through you. Your guns will also happily shoot right through friendly AI, turning them hostile and ruining your rep with that faction.
The steering attribute doesn't seem to be calculating correctly. It tells you to add thrusters to the ends of your ship to improve it, but the number won't go up no matter how many or how strong of thrusters you add.
Your weapons can have longer range than you can actually zoom out to see. Enemies can also shoot you from off screen.
The stagger fire option will randomly just stop working. Your drones will often just fly off to the edge of the map instead of engaging the enemy, and will often ignore the targeting preferences you have set for them when they do decide to fight.
The crosshair is just a giant arrow that rotates to indicate your facing, which makes it useless for actually aiming, since you can't tell which part of the arrow your shot will actually fire towards.

Some nice ideas and principles in the game and you can have a few hours of fun but it quickly gets old.
I don't like the bouny-hunt map gameplay. It feels like originally intended for a rogue like but is actually more like a farming sandbox. First few jumps are pretty fun but then you very quickly get stronger and stronger, and enemies just dont. They just get bigger and slower. It has factions and a dynamic map that you can influence, but after you kill a boss you get a new map so all of that doesn't have any consequences.
It feels like there is a concept missing here. It feels like it's come half-way between a rogue like and an open-world sandbox game (like starsector) but doesn't have the good parts of either.
If you want to build pretty ships in a sandbox-like experience and still breeze through without trying to build something strong, this is your game. Hell if you build intentionally bad ships you might even find a challange. But in a game focused on ship-building, building a good ship should be fun, not make the game boring.
Ship building system itself is great and the combats are smooth. Balance is all over the place. And by that I mean for the second run in a ship you can crank the "difficulty" slider all the way to 250 and it wont feel like a fight, but more like clubbing 250 caged chickens that have no way whatsoever of fighting back. Its very easy to just slap on more thrusters and outrun all missiles (and enemies).
Main thing is you get crew bonuses after the first time you beat a boss. Enemies don't get anything similar. This means all of your weapons will quickly out-range or otherwise outperform the enemy counter-parts
The difficulty slider seems to only affect size and amount of enemy ships. But enemy designs follow a pattern: They are either very slow, short-ranged, undergunned or flimsy. Most of them at least 3 if not 4 of those things at the same time. With extra difficulty all you get are more fish in the barrel that can't really fight back because you easily outrange and outrun or outgun and out-armor them.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I don't like the bouny-hunt map gameplay. It feels like originally intended for a rogue like but is actually more like a farming sandbox. First few jumps are pretty fun but then you very quickly get stronger and stronger, and enemies just dont. They just get bigger and slower. It has factions and a dynamic map that you can influence, but after you kill a boss you get a new map so all of that doesn't have any consequences.
It feels like there is a concept missing here. It feels like it's come half-way between a rogue like and an open-world sandbox game (like starsector) but doesn't have the good parts of either.
If you want to build pretty ships in a sandbox-like experience and still breeze through without trying to build something strong, this is your game. Hell if you build intentionally bad ships you might even find a challange. But in a game focused on ship-building, building a good ship should be fun, not make the game boring.
Ship building system itself is great and the combats are smooth. Balance is all over the place. And by that I mean for the second run in a ship you can crank the "difficulty" slider all the way to 250 and it wont feel like a fight, but more like clubbing 250 caged chickens that have no way whatsoever of fighting back. Its very easy to just slap on more thrusters and outrun all missiles (and enemies).
Main thing is you get crew bonuses after the first time you beat a boss. Enemies don't get anything similar. This means all of your weapons will quickly out-range or otherwise outperform the enemy counter-parts
The difficulty slider seems to only affect size and amount of enemy ships. But enemy designs follow a pattern: They are either very slow, short-ranged, undergunned or flimsy. Most of them at least 3 if not 4 of those things at the same time. With extra difficulty all you get are more fish in the barrel that can't really fight back because you easily outrange and outrun or outgun and out-armor them.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The gridless building system is genuinely innovative and separates it from a lot of other games in the genre, and it's only 15 bucks, which is a really reasonable price. You can build basically anything, a tiny little drone, sure, a massive kilometer-long ship—if your PC can handle it—sure, a boss, sure, a brick... I question your taste, but sure.
On a more serious note, thanks to the developer for being so responsive to suggestions and criticism. It's genuinely refreshing compared to what big game studios are doing these days.

The process for part unlocking is glacial for anything outside the very limited tech tree you start with, the wapons don't seem to have all that much that really makes them stand out, and the sector system is... rather bland.

The ability to customise your ships with a whole wacky host of modules and setups is incredible - you can fly everything from a brick with missile launchers to sleek laser boats and everything in-between. The ship building system is relatively intuitive, and you can even import ships that you can't yet build in order to steal design ideas - something I found quite helpful when trying to turn a brick into a sleek and deadly weapon of war!
The only tricky bit is gathering research points and blueprints to unlock new pieces for construction - that can take a while, but it does also give you a feeling of progression as you unlock some of the more unique bits and pieces.
Honestly, this game feels very polished, and the simplicity of her design makes it likely that there'll be a lot of modding possibilities in the future to add even more fun to the game. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tHighly repetitive gameplay, basically zero difficulty or stakes. Every fight boils down to "shoot enemies, fly away and heal if highly damaged". Even if 99% of your ship got destroyed and all you've got is a single thruster, you can always shift-W out of the battle, repair, and return to shooting within 20 seconds. Increasing the danger level doesn't actually make the game more difficult, just makes fights last longer by giving the enemy a higher fleet budget (so instead of constantly shooting at 10 ships for 1 minute, you get to constantly shoot at 50 ships for 5 minutes, still without any real risk).

This gives you a chance to learn, grow, and adapt without feeling the frustration of having to completely start over.
Edit: 70 hours in, I've gone beyond beating the main bosses, the end game track feels like it could keep going forever if you wanted, until you got bored. This game is amazing in the depth of what it lets you do. I made a ship that actually looks like a green dragon with moving tail, moving arms. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe simplicity and ease of access of Reassembly, the intensity of Nova Drift and the SCALE of cosmoteer. (Yes, I'm aware Nova Drift and Reassembly were inspirations; I have a few hundred hours in each.
And I almost engineergasm'd when I saw that there were pistons and hinges. Something neither Cosmoteer nor Reassembly (Rembly) had done yet. Yes, it's done in a simplified manner that would break Cosmoteer's pvp scene and make Reassembly trivially easy as a PvE game. But it still works.
With that said, it's not *perfect*. It's a 1.0 release at the moment and I am absolutely amazed at how polished and well-balanced it is. you MUST TRY to survive. And if it's too difficult? turn down the difficulty. Too easy? Turn it up. My first run was 0, then 10, and now 140 or so (the minimum for 300% XP)
The campaign isn't my favorite thing in the universe (mind the pun). The reputation system can be extremely irritating at times.
With all that said, at time of review, I had 7.3 hours on record. All of that was one sitting. It's 9 am the next day and it's in my favorites before I continue playing.
*This is the ONLY game in my library to hit my favorites in ONE playsession.*
I can't wait to see what becomes of the modding scene.
