It's so jarring i'd recommend waiting until it's fixed. It's pretty alright otherwise.
Edit: some task and subtask triggers are broken alonside their dialogue and they update the journal with info you've never recieved through the text or the audio. That's not just jarring, it's actively spoiling the narrative. definitely stay away for now if you want a good experience.
For example, When talking to the Fidgeting Teenager in front of the After Hours clinic he said "Nothing yet but I'm not going anywhere" to me asking him if he was with the medical board while the text said "I'm not" and the journal updated the relevant task telling me he's not here on behalf of the medical board but someone else! CONS:
- Inconsistent voiceover to text that is written (Some words and sentences are either completely skipped over, said completely different from what they are shown as in text, or just aren't said at all). Pretty alarming that a narrative-focused RPG has issues this bad with narrative. Information is just conveyed entirely inaccurately in some cases - I thought it was a narrative choice the first time it did happen, but it's clear the devs in charge of some of the dialogue are just incompetent.
- Punishment for skillchecks is way too consistent and harsh, at least in the opening hours of the game. I understand that failing is a core aspect of these games, and I love them for that. However, in the very first dialogue tree, I managed to max out one of the punishment categories (Anxiety), which takes 18 points to do. That was 18 points of "health" I lost in a single conversation with a character, and took a hit to my skillset. I suppose you could argue that this is a form of tutorial, but it does not feel that way. And if it is, it is extremely poorly implemented.
- The map is just straight horrible. It tells you where you are on the map at all times (good thing), but the map is stylised to be quickly jotted down in a notepad with pen - this in turn makes the map extremely polarising to even wrap your head around for the first 10 minutes at staring at it. Not a huge fault, but definitely an interesting design choice executed poorly. Not to mention, you can teleport at any point when you are outside, though you dont seem to have control of where you quick travel to, and it just plops you in a vauge pre-designated point that is in no way communicated where you would end up. Not a huge deal, but odd, considering the default place in the first zone is across the map from the starting building.
PROS:
- Dialogue. I was pretty worried about this one, considering the entire controversy and the original narrative leads leaving the company. It isn't Disco Elysium in terms of writing; but to be fair, this game isn't Disco Elysium. Too many people are going into this expecting a sequel or spiritual successor - it is not. It is a game that is (probably) set in the same continuity, in a completely different country, with completely different characters, with completely different motives. None of the narrative I have experienced (save the voices that didnt appear, or incorrect text) so far has jumped out at me as "terrible writing". The opposite actually - this game fells pretty well-written thus far what what is it; a homage to cheesy spy movies about the operant down on their luck. It succeeds.
- Art Direction. Not much to say. It's much of the original art team that worked on Disco Elysium, and it shows. Very stylised, visually interesting and a lot going on without it feeling overpowring or overdesigned. It's just a beautiful game, with models that are updated from Disco Elysium, and portraits for each character that aren't abstract like in Disco Elysium. They are clean, and show the character as they are. Which is themetically appropriate for who the main character is (not an alcohol and drug-induced sctizophrenic with amnesia).
Not much else to say. The devs need to fix the text and voice over ASAP in my opinion. It's strikingly amateur work for a company as experienced and talented as these guys to screw up the core foundation of their entire RPG to an extent.
I love the game, but until the narrative is fixed and working as it should, cannot recommend it in good faith.

Look, most of the original developers of Disco Elysium are gone, the few that are remaining are clearly trying to pick up the pieces and are now making something of their own. this is that. It is such a damn shame that people are not going to purchase this game, let alone try it out for the simple fact that the higher ups are scumbags, which is correct. But that frustration, That anger, SHOULD NEVER be projected onto the developers who are just trying to make something of their own. I enjoyed the demo a lot, mostly because it builds on the disco elysium formula! The only difference is the world and context! instead of playing as a cop who's hungover was so bad he got amnesia, you play as a girl failure spy, and honestly, I'm here for it! The art design is excellent and they did a fantastic job translating that onto the world they built! The soundtrack is also just as phenomenal btw! Look more into this game, and if you like it enough to purchase it or wait for a sale go ahead! but don't go around ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the current developers who have literally nothing to do with the situation that's happening between the higher ups at za/um and the og developers.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

You can not use numbers to trigger text responses, narration while voiced tend to somewhat snide and drawn out which tends to get on nerves because there is certain annoying tone to it (not sure if it was intentional) and there is no "quick save" option. I like to try out all text options when i play to see where it might lead. I sure as hell don't plan to play this game dozen times to see what it all has to offer, but it seems it was deliberately pushed to add more shelf life to game forcing you to replay it if you want to experience other possible roads it might lead. Manual loading after each text box option is tedious and annoying as hell, and i don't understand why they would have that option in demo version but remove it in full release... As it is, the game that made me make several long breaks already without some curiosity or wish to return to it as fast as i normally would seems to have serious issues, at least for me... If this changes when i finish it, i might rethink about my review but as it is, its more annoyance then anything else...

"Disco Elysium" was a book, a painting, a piece of digital art. But you cannot separate an artwork from its creators. A gallery that owns an artwork cannot pretend to be its author. They are not authors; they are just owners, the "bourgeois."
Greedy corporations should not be allowed to advertise this game as a successor to "Disco Elysium." They do not have Robert Kurvitz, Aleksander Rostov, and Helen Hindpere on their creative team. It is not the "ZA/UM" studio that made the game; studios do not make art—people do. This takes itself far too seriously and morose with its voice acting and overly wordy language. The map is also quite crappy. I played with controller and it was fiddly trying to press the button needed to observe or interact in many instances. I was also not a fan of the painted style art work.

This game is fantastic, and although I absolutely do not agree with what the company has done, they do know how to make a good game. The storytelling doesn't make sense at all at the beginning, but the longer you go on, the better it gets.
Everything clicks into place the more you play, and it's a fantastic spy thriller game at it's core.

The voice lines are inconsistent, with entire sections of dialogue suddenly having no voice over in a jarring way. Number keys do not work as intended. I followed ZA/UM vs Devs controversy (as many of you did too probably) I watched tens of hours of reporting on it.
Did ZA/UM mess up? Yes the Managenet pooped the bed, but I also found a lot of inconsistent stories from the fired Devs. In my oppinion all of it is a drama with a lot of people saying that they are right, and (most likely) omitting a lot of details.
THAT BEING SAID. Zero Parades theme of spies is something I love as genre and this game gives of the vibe in spades.
Is there Disco Elyzuim DNA in it - Yes of course. Is the game different from DE? YES!
A lot of DE systems areevolved in their own manner, and after 4+ hours of non stop playing, I feel like I am only scratching the surface.
Its a good game (so far) and I am enjoying it.
If the theme of Spies, Personal Suffering and Intrigue with DE-esque whimsy interests you, then this is a game for you IF you are not personally offended by the whole ZA/UM vs Devs fiasco.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
