Besides that there is a mode where you don't need to draw, you can instead use buttons. I still want to draw my spells myself, but having that feature is really considerate.

It's a very unique and fun idea taking advantage of touch controls, I've enjoyed the game so far. I can definitely recommend picking it up if you enjoy survivor likes. I've always wanted to play a game where you actually *feel* like you're casting spells instead of just pressing a button and this game does exactly that. One run will have you scribbling sigils like your life depends on it while another will have you jotting down a thunderbolt or star every other 30 seconds, but either way it's an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast. The game's setting and characters are also just incredibly charming, exploring the mansion and talking to the cast is the perfect breather in between runs and just as fun as one as well.
One thing to note, I've played 6 hours so far and I've come across a handful of bugs. Most of them minor but the biggest issue I've faced is the game's performance tanking at seemingly random times. Seems to be a lot more prone to happen the more effects/mobs you have on screen as well as the length of the run and the threshold seems to get lower and lower the more you play. So far I've had a couple of runs with lag spikes that were apparent but mostly just a nuisance, and one where it got so bad that I couldn't cast a single spell, which is to say, play the game. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe Magus Circle is a game I found through devlogs on YouTube Shorts, and it looked interesting so I kept my eye on it. During my time finishing and this game, I found myself getting increasingly frustrated with it for many reasons. Despite the good presentation, I really can't recommend it.
Note: This review was written on 10/5/2026. I played this game while some hotfixes were still being pushed out, so future updates may make parts of this review obsolete. This review will be kept mostly spoiler-free unless stated otherwise.
First off, the main positive I can give this game is its presentation. The art is really nice and the animation is fluid. The voice acting is solid as well, although on release many voice lines didn't match up with the text for some reason. I like the characters even though they don't really get any time to shine (more on this later). Props to the art team on this one.
The spellcasting system the game has front and center is cool conceptually and I think it's done well on a technical level. The symbols are easy to remember and the game is lenient enough with registering your lines that you can get away with going fast, but not so lenient that you don't have to try. There are some odd cases where you'll draw nonsense and it'll register as a spell, or you'll try to draw one and it'll see it as a different one. Luckily, these rarely happened with me so I wouldn't call it much of an issue.
Unfortunately, such a cool system feels like it's wasted on the lackluster encounters. This game plays similarly to Vampire Survivors, where it just throws hordes upon hordes of cannon fodder enemies at you. There's next to no strategy in this game, because when you're fighting a million little guys that slowly move towards you there's no reason to not pick the highest damaging AoE spells and upgrades. The enemy variety is so bad that 99% of the time you're only going to be fighting a single type. There is a special modifier that adds special enemies to your runs, but it feels silly for that to be a modifier instead of something already part of the base experience. Why design different enemies that most players aren't going to see? Even with this modifier turned on it still felt like I was doing the same thing for five minutes straight until one enemy came in to make things slightly different.
The leviathans are also really boring. They have cool designs, but all except the third one only have a single attack and never feel like they pose a real threat. You can usually just ignore them and keep attacking the regular enemies that keep spawning and the leviathan will die in the process.
On top of that, the spell balancing is horrible. There are some win buttons like Fireball and Gale, where if you get one of them (which you almost always will) they can easily carry you through the early game and there's no way for you to lose if you keep upgrading them. On the other hand, there are some spells that are totally worthless like Poppet, Raise Dead, and Prismatic Pylon, because they do small damage to single targets while being the same price or more than Fireball/Gale. Mana also becomes a non-issue with just a few upgrades.
There are also a lot of things in this game that are just never shown to you, and if you don't go find them yourself you're just missing out.
On the mechanics side, there are a few things such as potion crafting, buddies/pets, gardening, etc. that are never shown to the player. You can only find them by wandering into the rooms they're a part of, making it possible to get through the entire game without knowing they exist.
What I feel like is even worse is the fact that it hides lore from you. This game's story on a surface level is actually pretty interesting, but it never feels like it captures the scope it's trying to because barely anything happens. None of the characters, with some minor exceptions from Milk and Matcha, ever get any time in the spotlight so by the time you finish the game you're just left there wondering where their stories were. They don't need huge moments or anything but some extra cutscenes of them talking about themselves would have been nice. I think the worst example of this is the final character you unlock, Anchan. After you beat the final boss, she calls everyone into her crypt so that she can hold her funeral, as the curse giving her immortality has been destroyed. Matcha knew the whole time but Anchan asked him to keep it a secret. After I had finished the game and gone back in, I got the cutscene of Matcha and Anchan talking. Anchan didn't get ANYTHING regarding herself or the story before this. You unlock her, she says a few lines, and then that's it until the end of the game. Milk's storyline regarding her sister Honey is also hidden from you unless you find the secrets around the map. It's important to the story, so once again it's odd that you could finish the game without knowing about it.
As for the final boss... it's one of the weakest I have seen from any game. The buildup is alright, I like the unique mechanic it has even though it more or less plays the same as any other run. The final boss itself is pathetic. You're fighting an enemy that should have INCREDIBLE power, and yet the most it can muster is a single phase where it occasionally sends out one of two attacks. You beat this boss by running in a circle and spamming one or two high-damage spells, and that's it. The epilogue isn't bad but it feels very underwhelming and just asks more questions than it answers.
(Postgame content spoilers ahead) After you beat the final boss, you get the chance to talk to one of the NPCs who will give you a secret new sigil to cast in place of the one that triggers the normal boss. This takes you to the secret boss, which is actually REALLY cool. The cutscenes leading up to it are fantastic and give some story context that the normal route doesn't. The fight itself is also far more interesting and fun than the main boss. It wasn't amazing, as it still plays similarly to the leviathan fights in a normal run, but I actually found myself having fun for the first time in many hours. The secret epilogue was cool, but it does have a time loop ending which I find to be pretty lame. That's just me though. If you end up beating this game, DO NOT skip this extra content. It's worth your time if you made it that far.

On launch, it was impossible to play past a certain amount of time because the game would throw so many enemies at you that no matter how good your computer is it would lag you so badly that you can't draw spells anymore. An update came out and enemies would just start randomly disappearing. I would barely be five minutes into a run and the entire horde I would be fighting would just straight up disappear into thin air, and elite enemies would disappear and teleport to random locations. If this is intentional, it didn't even do what it was intended to because I would still lag horribly on massive waves in longer runs. Now, barely 20 minutes in, I'll start to lag so badly I can't move or cast spells. I really hope all this gets fixed in the future because even for a new release it feels absurd.
Overall, I'm mixed on this game but leaning more towards not liking it. It has some good points but feels so rushed that it doesn't do nearly enough to make up for the bad. 1) The voice acting, art style, concept etc are amazing, ive been hyped for this game for a year.
2) This game is blatently unfinished, feels like an early access game.
I have encountered probably 50 completely different bugs, i'm not exaggerating. Ill include a non-comprehensive list of bugs below to highlight the issues this game has. Do not play this game right now, its literally broken.
- Clipping into objects ingame and getting stuck
- The unstuck button not doing anything
- Hearts in Chapter 2 being unpickable if you activate another heart and dont collect it, which is common if you havent taken damage, locking you out of healing
- Enemies spawning and dying out of bounds in Act 3
- Enemies dropping chests out of bounds in Act 3
- A character being designed around summoning tonnes of turrets and the game collapsing when you summon too many, objects not spawning, projectiles not spawning, objects not despawning
Non-"Bug"-Issues
- Effect text not telling you what it actually does, if not being outright misleading
a) An item that converts projectiles into weaker projectiles but cost 50% less mana (the real effect is making all projectiles pierce infinitley but every attack the turret makes costs mana, leading to you being out of mana forever)
- Drawing being extremely weird, frequently accidentially leveling up, drawing what should be impossible structures
- Poor controller support, games default to Joystick as WASD even though you can move with a Joystick
- Occasionally being offered items like "X spell costs 2 more mana" ... Hello? Thats literally just a nerf, I took it and it was just a negative
Odd design choices
- Theres a rarity system behing level ups, however every level up just provides 3 gray card options for you to select.
- The game having no reason to explore ever, even having stages where you fight in a box. I quite like this actually, But then you have a map where you can walk infinitely in any direction, and its the first stage. Why? Because every other game in this genre does this but has reasons to explore. (So no thought was put into level design for the FIRST stage/act

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t1. In my opinion, the game wasn’t ready for release. There are still a lot of unfinished and unpolished things, and the game occasionally crashes (the process simply dies), causing all the progress you’ve accumulated to be lost. Цhat’s the point of having a “Continue” button?
On the bright side, the developers have released several fixes since launch. I hope they won’t abandon the game and will continue to improve and develop it.
2. The game also has a great mechanic where drawing a sign applies different status effects. HOWEVER, sometimes the sign appears on the ground very far away from where you actually drew it. This is especially noticeable with smaller signs.
3. It feels like some skills were added just to tick a box, because they are significantly weaker than other abilities. For example, Milk’s basic ability, Magic Missile, is much more useful and cheaper than Raise Dead. The monsters are extremely slow, and even upgrading them doesn’t make the situation much better.
4. There is some interaction between skills, but it feels quite weak, and the combinations don’t improve the abilities by much. Take Magic Missile, for example. If you combine it with Ink, the projectiles become black and deal around 25% more damage. But why would I spend mana on a second spell just for a 25% damage increase?
Without upgrades, this combination makes some sense because Ink costs almost no mana and still gives you that 25% bonus. However, after upgrading Ink, it starts costing almost as much mana, while the bonus remains at 25%.
For comparison, I could simply use Thunder Storm, which already has high DPS, and spending the same amount of mana on it would give me much more than a 25% damage increase.
Having skill interactions is definitely a good thing, but once again, the balance feels rather weak.

If you plan to get into this game I have some advice:
- If you have a drawing tablet USE IT, it is the absolute best input method, the most immersive, and it has the highest skill ceiling
- if you do not have a drawing tablet, use mouse and keyboard. If you do not have any physical reasons to use the button press for spells, don't use it. This game is much more fun when you are forced to do the spells yourself instead of just clicking "ability buttons"

However, I still experience stutters in this game. When you are drawing sigils and weaving between monsters, you do not want your game to stutter and mess up the start and end of your sigils. It is frustrating.
Once that's fixed and the game has more polish I 100% recommend this game for vampire survivor like fans, and people who think the sigil mechanic is cool.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

However, once you get to ~40 minutes into a playthrough, suddenly a lot of the baby monsters become very tanky and the game runs at 1 frame per sometimes. 10/10 game until ~40 minute mark. I was clearly strong enough to probably win at the 40+ minute mark, but the game ran so slowly that I would get hit by things that quite literally just teleported to me while I could not move. Please add something (maybe turn off damage numbers?) to increase FPS in later stages, I spent 20 minutes on 4 in game minutes.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
