\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI really like this game, I really do. I wouldn't have 97 hours if I didn't. I wouldn't still play it in my free time when I'm bored if this wasn't fun to me. But it desperately needs work that most deckbuilding games have done.
I'm going to go over my flaws first, at least the ones I've experienced.
RNG needs balance. I have spent upwards of 5 rerolls looking for one card on a normal chance. Every other card will appear, but not this one. My RNG cannot be that bad. They need to take another look at these chances, because THAT MANY rerolls for one thing that isn't even a rainbow card, is from that king's deck, is downright unfair.
Some cards feel like filler unless you use them on their king. Several kings don't feel balanced or on the same level as others, even on easier difficulties. The King of Time feels heavily overpowered compared to the King of Spells. King of Stone feels stronger than the King of Nothing, even on years 10-33 on Peasant difficulty.
Scaling is busted. Infinite years, levels, and difficulties while using a consistent increase (I imagine) for this game is a good idea, but somewhere around year 60 does the game start showing that either you are stronger than the enemy kings, or they are stronger than you, and your loss is impending, no matter the RNG and strategy you play. That isn't scaling, thats having the same run and same strategy fail one time when it wins another for no reason.
Quests have all the problems above in worse ways. Now, you usually have to rely on shops as a lifeline, yet, with how money scales, and how RNG works, you are lucky to get a quest done on the first five attempts. An easier difficulty doesn't change the mechanical issues of the game.
Implementing new mechanics before fixing the old ones. Multiplayer sounds fun, yeah, but the fact these problems exist with that being added makes it feel like the company is doing a slight "jingle keys" trick.
I understand this is a small team, and that its relatively cheap. This game is insanely fun, and I adore playing it. The strategies it makes me come up with, the need for me to change what I'm thinking of doing last second, and I adore the design. Every king feels like its own, every card and base its own. I adore the King of Blood and King of Nothing the most, both mechanically and aesthetically. The KoN rewards a focus on paladins and soldiers while making you try whatever you are given. A good starter, while King of Blood rewards your failures, letting you slip but letting you stand back up.

Some reasons:
- Never changing deck of cards for each king, so after a few playthroughs you have seen every card and every combination and you have pretty much already figured out the broken combos. Some cards are utterly useless and some cards are utterly broken. --> If this had some real deck bilder elements, it could be improved a lot already.
- No hotkeys or QoL at all. I have to manually drag and drop perks into 9 perk slots before each run? (Or maybe no dev bothers to do it and doesn't relize it's a problem since there is a broken perk that works only if it is the only one, so they all just need to drag and drop one item...). I have no hotkey to highlight the lvls of my buildings. Not one hotkey in the game whatsoever. No setting to mute sound when game is minimized.
- Probably the worst offender on this list: In a game about exponential growth in numbers, the game can't handle... exponential growth.
Some builds simply freeze the game when numbers get too big. Zero optimization on that end is simply unforgivable in... i repeat... a game about exponential growth. Lmao.
- The combat itself is utterly meaningless. Either your numbers are big enough, or they are not. No common elements of auto battlers are used here: Placement strategy, unit synergy strategy. Nothing. You have enough number? You get to the next year. You don't? You lose a life. I have no idea why it's even animated, it's so meaningless i wish i could just skip it entirely and have it replaced by what it is: a number check.
- The pixel 'art' is lazy and ugly. Pixel art doesn't imply you should take the lowest resolution assets and slam them into a game with zero effort. But that's exactly what they did here. (Especially regarding units).
This game feels like it has been a solo project of some beginner vibecoder, not a game programmed by the creators of Against the Storm. The quality is night and day, not even comparable in the slightest.

The biggest thing that keeps me coming back is the active development -- the devs are always adding new things, and not just new cards, but entirely new game modes. The normal singleplayer alone is fun, but Quest Mode is entertaining to beat, and the new multiplayer mode is super addictive!

You can play the same quest 6-7 times in a row, losing in 3-4 minutes, then finally win on the 7th try simply due to the RNG of the cards, upgrades, store, etc. that you are offered, where there are some very OP specific things that'll let you win.
It's not fun, it's just gambling at that point, no skill involved. It's frustrating. It's not about the difficulty level either. Obviously the devs are updating it, as there have been several updates in the last week, so I'll let this cook a bit longer and revise my review if anything changes.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There's very little strategy, very few choices out of a small pool, you have very few statistics to work with, the battles mostly play themselves, the graphics are bad and you can't see the units, you do the same thing every turn, you don't get information about your enemies, it's hard to meaningfully change your play mid-run.. there are just so many things wrong with it.
