Tons of updates brought a lot of new and different things to do, but every old and new mechanic is simple and lacks progression. The worst part is that with the size of the galaxy - your experience, except visually, does not change. If you fought sentinels on this planet it will be same experience 100 star systems away. Same old few missions, same old buildings on different edges of a galaxy. It's dull in it's samyness.
Exploration doesn't matter, mechanically planets have same missions, same underlying structure, you don't need to prepare or care on what planet you are, except what resources you need. And very fast it becomes logistics and resource management game instead of a exploration game. Which wouldn't be a problem if resource management and logistics wouldn't be so shallow and boring.
Trade doesn't matter, interaction between factions is none existent and it makes every star system samish and non-important. Space fights are dull. What type of space ship you fly doesn't really matter, partly because of uninspired mechanics, partly because there is no real difference between said space ships. Of course, except visually and how much stuff it can carry.
In the end you're just watching how much more stuff you have, more currencies, more bases, more pretty ships, more resources, but in the end you're doing the same thing that you did in the star system you spawned. The aliens and their technologies also have unique design to them, as well as ships, portals, etc. The corvette is fully customizable, and the personalization doesn't stop there, there is still base building and frigate, which is a lot larger in scale and many other amenities.
However, as much as I like how the devs redeem this game over quite a long time, I gotta say the game fell short just after a while for me. First thing: lack of QoL. Things like the jetpack jump interfering with normal jump and weapon operation really ruin my combat and ore mining experience. Climbing the ladder feels like eternity and the character just auto-climb whenver near it, like in trade outposts, and this is very annoying. Accessing storage is just a hassle, and without essential ores to build a camp and claim the base it's gonna take a while to dump all the stuff into other inventories (also they do not have auto-sorting in storage). There are many more, and I feel like the game this old should have already addressed these things. Second thing: things feel flat and repetitive after a while. Sure there are a lot of things that you can do when visiting a new system, meeting aliens there, setting up camps, etc. Space combat gets boring after a few hours for me, which I think should be a main focus of a game with space as the center of its attraction. Quantity cannot beat quality, and this inevitably comes sooner or later (later for me).
The game has its own charm, and with me those 97 hours were definitely worth it. But it would not be something that I can binge anymore. And I just wanna specify a few things for other people who just wander into this exquisitely-built but poorly-optimized jack-of-all-trade game. It's true that it is broad but shallow in many ways - but this is still some of the most immersive fun I've had in VR. There is something supremely mellow about hanging out in space and being able to walk on a planet's surface, jump abroad your spaceship, fly off into orbit, hyperdrive to the nearest space station, land, go to the portal and teleport all the way to your base. And NMS does some pretty cool things in terms of VR user interface and controls (even if some other things could be improved a lot, such as the inventory system).\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Deciding whether to buy this game or not I decided otherwise. Even tho the game astonished me the delivered product was far from satisfactory. Few years went by and I heard about No Mans Sky again, now looking even better than what I originally expected. I bought game pass to try it out and spent around 200h playing. The game has done way more than redeem its sins. It became one of the greatest games ever made and developers really made effort to uphold their promises to 200%. Incredible world, boundless options and hours on hours of gameplay that just sucks you in. Year after and I also decided to buy the game on steam. Hands down the best purchase I have ever made on Steam. I cant recommend this game enough, worth every penny. The biggest issue, BY FAR, of this game, is the baffling design choices that you encounter constantly. Things that make you tab out and google to make sure you're not stupid and just missing something, just to find out that no, it's by design, and people have been complaining about it since the game's release.
Some quick ones that are noticeable within 30 minutes of playing;
No "save and quit", you have to find a save point, or enter/leave your ship, and then alt-f4 as your only means of leaving the game.
The tutorial tells you to go somewhere, and puts a visible marker for you to go to. The marker however then dissapears, and the tool you can build to locate things, such as that marker you need to find, is not unlocked yet, so you better have remembered!
Speaking of the tutorial, you get a little text box at the bottom of your screen that tells you the next steps that you have to work for, which is nice. HOWEVER, this box constantly switches from the objective you're on (eg: "craft a wire to repair the ship"), to useless text akin to "mine iron ore for iron :)", and the only way to get the useful guide/objective back up is to wait for the chaff to cycle through, like an ad.
Pressing escape will, unintuitively, not close whatever menu you're inside of; it will open a separate compendium-style menu. This means that constantly while playing you will be opening and closing 3-5 different menus by accident for something that should have taken one key press.
Some quests require you to craft things to repair machines/etc, but they won't just let you craft it in your inventory, where the thing you need to repair is; you have to switch to another tab in your inventory, craft the component you need (hope you remembered what it was!), and then go back to the original tab to drag it into the slot. This is small, but it happens so often, and just shows what kind of ride you're in for with the UI/UX in the game.
This is barely the tip of the iceberg, but the game has been out for YEARS, and I am finding complaints about these exact things back from release, which can only mean that they are known, and are design choices, despite them resulting in an extremely frustrating experience.

First off, the Singleplayer story alone is incredibly mysterious, but also not too confusing. You can get your bearings in the world quite easily and explore on your own if you don't want to rush the story right away.
Multiplayer is where this game gets serious. I not only play with randoms online, but with my brother occasionally running missions together. The various systems and ways to collect resources are all programmed and presented well, and the whole "no loading screens" while going into planets is almost seamless.
The only minor issue that presents itself is the Space Hotspot Collisions, like Space Stations, the Anomaly, or your Freighter. Even then, this issue is pretty niche. Like, if you exit some Freighters, your starship might get bumped once or twice. Not a big problem!

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tYou know you are doing something right when there are Chinese knock-offs of your game's assets (yes, looking at you, Once Human). However, Sean Murray (NMS Director) handled that in the best way possible — with humor.
Typical live-service game drama aside, when this game released, I was quite cautious about it; I didn't believe it could become what it is today. PlayStation rushed No Man's Sky to be released in an incomplete state (maybe this was due to some exclusivity deal). Regardless, what matters now is that NMS is a great game with unique features; you can roam around in space, create bases, tame creatures, discover secrets, etc. The content is endless; in fact, it is virtually impossible to explore all 256 galaxies in your lifetime. Though, it is important to point out that, as with any procedural generation game, if you play NMS for enough time, you'll notice patterns in how and when the game's engine does it. Of course assets are finite; nonetheless, it is fascinating how the game keeps delivering by circumventing its limitations, and in return, players end up doing the same in creative ways.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tTypical live-service game drama aside, when this game released, I was quite cautious about it; I didn't believe it could become what it is today. PlayStation rushed No Man's Sky to be released in an incomplete state (maybe this was due to some exclusivity deal). Regardless, what matters now is that NMS is a great game with unique features; you can roam around in space, create bases, tame creatures, discover secrets, etc. The content is endless; in fact, it is virtually impossible to explore all 256 galaxies in your lifetime. Though, it is important to point out that, as with any procedural generation game, if you play NMS for enough time, you'll notice patterns in how and when the game's engine does it. Of course assets are finite; nonetheless, it is fascinating how the game keeps delivering by circumventing its limitations, and in return, players end up doing the same in creative ways.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
