I normally don't like games with no real ending. I prefer progression, a clear goal, and knowing that eventually I will reach a final point and move on. Endless games usually lose me because after some time it starts feeling repetitive or directionless.
But this game somehow hits differently.
When I started, I thought it was just another space survival game: collect resources, build things, repeat. I wasn't expecting much. Then weird things started happening. I discovered my own star system and realized I could rename it with my IGN. Then I found out that if I upload it, other players who reach that place can actually see that I discovered it first. Suddenly the universe stopped feeling like a generated map and started feeling like a shared world.
The scale of the game is hard to describe. You realize you're not exploring a small handcrafted map, you're inside something absurdly huge. The crazy thing is that the game doesn't force you into one path either. One minute I was looking for copper to repair things, the next I found a crashed B-class ship and started debating whether I should repair it, scrap it, or keep it. Then I ended up learning about salvaging, discovering planets, inventory management, and ten other things I wasn't even planning to do.
What surprised me most is that there is always something pulling your curiosity forward. You constantly tell yourself: "one more thing before I stop."
I'll check this planet.
I'll finish this mission.
I'll see what that signal is.
I'll repair this ship.
Then suddenly a lot more time has passed than expected.
I still don't know how long I will stick with this game. Maybe I'll play for 50 hours, maybe hundreds. But I can already say this game completely changed my expectations. I expected an endless game that I would get bored of quickly. Instead I got a game that keeps making me curious.
There is so much to do, but it somehow doesn't feel overwhelming.

The exploration is impressive in its breadth, but ultimately disappointing in depth. After a point, everything is pretty 'same old, same old'.
The game is PvE, which is good because it prevents griefing and other abuses, but it does mean starship combat is rather uninteresting.
There are bugs galore that go forever unfixed. Most annoying are the unsolvable clipping errors and the game forgets changes you make to planetary terrain.
On the plus side, the game is a single purchase, works even on an aging, mid-grade gaming laptop under linux, has an impressively massive open world, and progress isn't agonizingly grindy.
On the minus side, the bugs are persistent, the game world is impressively static (nothing you do matters to any npc faction), very few of the gameplay concepts are fully executed, and, even though you can cross galaxies, you can't secure a load of toxic waste in the bed of a truck.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

You can't really do much together, and the things you can do, does not really work. The devs care for this game and it is always improved but this whole world with zillion potential planets to explore feels really bared and generic after a while. I would prefer more if they had 50 unique well made planets than millions of those generic ones.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Seriously, what did I pay for? A multiplayer game where I can't play with my friends because the developers can't keep supported platforms on the same version? There is no workaround, no rollback, no manual update—just "wait."
If you're going to sell the game on both Windows and Mac through Steam, keep the versions synchronized. Otherwise, don't advertise it as a multiplayer experience across supported platforms.

I think i sunk 100 hours in the first month it was out and I felt like i got my money's worth out of my play time then so i didn't complain much or leave any reviews. I was a bit disappointed at some of the over hype and missing promised features and some bugs as I'm sure a lot of people were in the beginning but look at what its become! look at all the missing features and empty promises from all the Kickstarter projects and fraudulent cash grab rug pull scams that early access game developers have thrown in our faces between now and then. The team at hello games has proven to be nothing but faithful and loyal to its player base and the gaming industry as a whole. they're dedicated and earnest. They could have taken our money and cut and run but they didn't and what an honest accomplishment they've achieved through no mans sky and all of the updates! They have my trust in the face of a whole lot of crappy dishonest development rug pull cash grabs and i couldn't be more thankful and proud of what they've accomplished! Every free update since launch has expanded a game and a universe with a living soul that's simply blown my mind at times and given me experiences i didn't know were possible through video games!. I can't wait for Light no fire and don't rush it this time guys. Let it cook, we're all here waiting with all the trust and goodwill you've earned! At least from me anyway <3

Very fun, relaxing game. It kinda feels like Minecraft in space in the sense that there is A LOT of stuff to do, but there's not too much forcing the player to do it and also all that stuff that you can do is not all that complex, just grindy, but I like the grind! It's a cool loop to traverse the galaxy and explore different worlds.
I like how you have to interact with a specific race in order to gain reputation and learn their language, again, grindy but actually rewarding because you see the rewards in literally being able to sorta understand the guys after a while.
When you actually find the right planet, the right place where the sun shines just right. The game looks great from then on. Even better when you find that moment again, 20 solar systems later.
The music is nice I guess, sometimes it fits really nicely but sometimes its a biiiit too much...
Base building is cool, resource gathering is cool, I like industrializing hellish planets lol
I like the nanite upgrade systems, the feeling of reaching your characters potential movement and damage capacities is nice. Scanner upgrade go BRRRRRRR
In general, I would say is a very immersive game, I truly feel like a space traveler when I play No Man's Sky, and I see that as a huge achievement for the game, the movement of the spaceship feels nice most of the time, using the pulse drive and finding stuff in deep space is just cool man.
THE BAD:
THERES SO MANY BUGS MAN
Multiplayer can easily become a very frustrating experience with the bugs, infinite enemy waves, immortal bosses, canceled drops... It happens often, which encourages players/friends to play apart from one another, even more so in combats, which SHOULD be very fun as a team. Speaking about combat...
All ground fights are a joke. The only way to make a ground battle remotely challenging is to fight in an infernal world, surrounded by mountains, in the middle of a storm. And still, fighting is just kinda transactional.
Spaceship battles are a bit better I think, but not by much: always have sodium/shield rechargers and thats it.
I like the mission system in theory, but in practice it feels very shallow and it gets old quick. I understand the way to do it is grab a mission and clear it WHILE you are doing something else/adjacent to it, but still... I just would like something a bit richer from the guild/race missions, not all of them, just maybe from high level missions or something...
Thoughts:
Go in thinking "Minecraft in space" and you will have a good time!

I'm still here, still playing. 920+ hours on my main save that has been active since launch. Went through every expedition (except one), saw the game evolve and rework itself 5 times. It ended up becoming way too heavy for my base PS4 cuz my bases were so complex the game ran on single digits. Was going to buy a PS4 pro for the performance upgrade, after the base PS4 busted. I ended up buying a PS5 and kept playing there (one of 3 PS5 games I play). Since cross-save became a thing, I'd migrate it to my 8yo pc to do stuff while my PS4 was busted. Now I got a pc that can run anything the PS5 runs (badly), but at 60+fps on ultra. I'm essentially just playing on PS5 for nostalgia (and cuz I detest xbox button prompts, long story). But what can I say? The game runs 10x better here than on PS5 and I also argue the PS5 Pro. Also, I don't need to be shackled to that craptastic PS+ subscription just to access online functions.
I'm trying not to turn this into a Sony rant cuz I detest Sony's decisions and practices since the PS4 launched.
Anyway. There ain't much I can say that hasn't been said every time this game gets a free update by the most resilient team that I've ever seen. I've made comments about features on their trailers and turned out that my voice was addressed in following updates. Hello Games blew me away. I expected very little when it launched cuz I knew their previous game was a humble digital-only indie platformer. ANd now the game apparently updated itself adding all that was expected of it and then some.
I still find it niche, but it's one that warms my heart, even after I've already done everything there is to be done on it.
I'm more of a scifi guy, but I can't wait to see what they'll come up with for their Fantasy game, given technical upgrades they implement for that game end up retroactively added to NMS.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
