I respect Hello Games for the energy and dedication, but the direction just never clicked for me. The design ethos feels like endlessly bolting on new systems without ever adding real depth. No Man’s Sky has a thousand things to do, but you’ll master each one in five minutes and never think about it again. I'm now floating around in space outside of my ship. Mind is already blown but it gets better. I jump back in my ship and as I head towards my second planet I think to myself "Could I eject out of my ship just above the planet and free fall down onto the planet...?"
Yes. Yes I could. And I did. Took me a minute or so to free fall down into the ocean of this new planet and plop into the water. I couldn't believe it.

In Valheim, you HAVE to cook. It's a MUST. If you don't cook, your health and stamina will never be enough. That's a system integrated into the whole structure of the game. No Man's Sky? No system is integrated whatsoever. Can you have a lil company of fighters? Yes. Does it do anything? No. Not really. You don't need to do anything. There is no reason, no purpose.
Even Minecraft has a reason and purpose, because enemies do more damage in certain places. Here? What enemies? The same ones you have seen before across the entire game. There is no danger, there is no urgency, there is no engagement aside from "you can do it, so it's cool."

It wasn't great in terms of gameplay, but the most impressive part of it was the way you could seamlessly fly between planets and enter the atmosphere, fly down to the surface, and step out without ever seeing a loading screen. The LOD loading was perfect, everything felt smooth and seamless.
Sure there was never anything to actually do except point a laser at a rock for ten minutes until you had enough resources to go somewhere else, but that transition from space to the surface was magical and never got old.
Ten years of updates later and there's a lot more to do, but none of it is really fun or has any purpose. They've long since abandoned the central premise of the game about being a lonely traveller trying to reach the centre of the galaxy, and made it a cosy base-building simulator. Kind of the antithesis of the original premise, being able to teleport all over the place and set up permanent structures. Why? No reason, but you can do it.
Unfortunately, somewhere in all these updates they lost that only magical thing they had. The seamless transitions between space and the surface. They completely overhauled the way it was handled, and how planet generation in general was handled. So what we got was more detailed surfaces, but still no variety. You land anywhere on the planet, you've seen the whole planet. But as you fly into the atmosphere now you're not greeted by the majesty of creation any longer, marveling at the shear scale of it. Nope, now you get a patchwork grid of texture popins that occur on every machine, no matter how powerful your hardware. Just a blurry mess beyond a few squares at the centre of your vision, that morph and deform out of low resolution nothingness, and appear as a huge scar across a vaguely blurry larger planet texture.
It looks horrendous, and you do it OFTEN. It looks horrendous no matter the hardware, and it makes me sad to see them burn the one thing the launch version actually did perfectly in favour of adding pokemon hologram arenas and limited-area grav gun minigames. It's all fluff, at the cost of the core thesis of what this game once claimed to be.

Hello Games pushes out a major update for NMS every couple of months with very little regard for how the new systems they introduce interact with the old ones (the bugged interactions between Corvettes and Freighters to name one example), not to mention that the systems themselves are either half-baked at best or completely broken at worst. As of the 7.0 update, game crashes are very frequent and seemingly unavoidable, especially when it comes to multiplayer or nexus missions (I have yet to be able to complete one of the latter since the update came out).
Considering how many bugs I've noticed from as far back as 2020 still remain in the game unchanged, I have little faith that Hello Games will spend any concerted effort making the game actually playable rather than a live service testbed for Light No Fire's systems. Genuinely not worth the purchase unless something changes.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

i must say thank you for this expeditio ncelebrating the 10 years - going through the milestones, hearing the mostly negative to very positive journey that the team went through did move me a lot.
have been playing this game on and off throughout the journey, solo and with friends - and now its time to say thank you. It is not a perfect game but it is a game that i keep coming back to and enjoy the newly added features and functions while still going through what was already there.
It is an exerpience i am glad to have had and will continue to enjoy

People call No Mans Sky a come back story, but is it really that good or is it just better than when it launched?
I guess the phrase "As wide as the ocean, but as deep as a puddle" comes to mind.
Theres more content, but none of it leads anywhere. The features dont link together, somethings are obviously an after thought.
When you add new stuff, it either needs to mesh with the old, or you need to adjust the old stuff to accomodate the new stuff. Corvettes landing on freighters is the perfect example of this. The Just sloppily bolted it on there and called it a day.
There still isnt much to do. You goto a system, scan the planets, and maybe scan some rocks and animals.
Every place is the same, the aliens are just props, and its just...so samey and nothing you do matters. its a very common space game problem for sure.
Im not able to say its a bad game but its clear theres a focus on adding "Content" without much thought into fully incorporating anything.
Races for example, Why is there exocraft racing and no starship racing?
Science and construction benches, apparently im supposed to get missions from them? For what and why dont they do anything. Why is it that im walking my frigate and i see "Blarney the Gek" is "hoping for reassignment", then i go talk to him and my only choice is, "i better leave gek alone"?
Frigate and Base Buildings, Why do somethings just break the wall? you cant put a door on a commercial room.
I cant not recommend the game, but i cant say its a good as the hype pretends\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

When I needed it later and realized it was gone, I just stared at the screen for a moment and accepted that I had made a serious tactical error.
Luckily, with my gamer mindset, thinking (with this kind of game, there should be a load save feature for this, and so I explore the settings and there it was a recent save file. 🙏
Honestly, the ability to load a previous save is such a great feature. Saved me from my own stupidity. 😂

I had the privilege of playing a little game named "Noctis" in the 2000s. It was created by a single developer named Alessandro Ghignola, who had been working on it since the mid-90's, and it was built on the developer's own proprietary programming language for the game called L.in.oleum.
The vibes of that game were absolutely incredible; it was relatively low-poly, but you were a space-faring captain of an exploration ship. You had a vast galaxy you could traverse, managing your fuel (and sending out distress beacons to NPC ships if you ran out), orbiting stars for photographs, and using a pod to descend to the surface of planets to explore them. The low-poly worlds were eerie as you explored. Occasionally something resembling a triangular kangaroo would run by. Sometimes monoliths jutted from hillsides. Some planets were dark. Some had rain. Best of all, the game had a system of naming these planets where you could upload your version of the starmap and pull down a merged version with everyone else's explored worlds named and mapped.
I chased the dream and image of this game, burned into my soul, for many years until I saw a trailer for No Man's Sky.
I am rarely one to pre-order games, and especially at that time, I felt relatively disillusioned by the gaming industry promising many things and never delivering the advertised experiences. But I shot up and immediately pre-ordered No Man's Sky. "This is what I've been waiting for!" I remember thinking. "This is Noctis. This is my return to Noctis."
No Man's Sky released and I was elated. The game was exactly what I had wanted it to be. I could explore worlds! I could scan little guys and name them! I could spend time on a planet just LOOKING at things. The worlds were eerily quiet and empty, just as I had wanted. The vibes were immaculate, and I loved the game for it.
My heart broke for the team when the game released to much controversy. It wasn't until a few years later that I learned the whole story of what happened in early development of the game, but I knew at the time that no team that had been so excited to release the game they showed in their trailer deserved the insane and immediate backlash they received.
No Man's Sky has been an incredible Cinderella story, starting with what I witnessed to be one of the more "gory" releases in the gaming world, and quickly righting themselves and delivering something the gaming world actually changed their minds about. For that, I am eternally grateful that people have been able to re-join the game and give it another try after Hello Games had the time to cook.
But to me, the game was always, and will always be one of the most beautiful experiences I've enjoyed in gaming.
