\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tImma keep it real, the base game campaign of Hotline Miami 2 is horrible. The story is great, but the actual game design is atrocious. The beauty of Hotline Miami 1 in it's gameplay was its fluid sense of freedom when it came to dealing out violence the way you want. A lot of player expression is allowed giving you a very powerful sense of freedom.
Hotline Miami 2's campaign basically takes that away. And it sucks. Most of your time with this game will be spent inching forward ever so slightly, to avoid getting sniped off screen, and it's gonna happen anyway. You're also forced to play as different characters with abilities which sounds awesome right? Well it would've been but then the god awful level design, off screen enemies, and countless windows out of sight where enemies can see you through but you can't just gets in the way of that aspect as you can't really formulate your own playstyle..
You're gonna die so much and a lot of it won't be because it's your fault, but because the game is such a trial and error mess of bad game/level design that you're gonna be asking yourself "How is this even fun?"
This game almost doesn't even encourage you to get good at it because it's just not fun in the first place; the level and game design to me in HLM2 is that bad. And I stopped playing for a whole year after a certain level called Demolition; the start of that level made me completely drop the game..
So why am I recommending this game? The level editor and absolutely amazing modding community that has made countless campaigns FAR better and more creative than the base game of HLM2. I recently started playing this game again out of boredom and finally explored the workshop; my god is this stuff peak Hotline Miami gameplay.
So in short, the campaign sucks ass, but the community modding scene and the very simple to use level creator/editor make this game very much worth it.

The game has fewer masks than the previous title, but they have been replaced with distinct playable characters, each with their own abilities and playstyles.
There is not much else I can say without repeating what I said about the first game. The soundtrack is incredible, the gameplay is satisfying, and the story does a great job expanding on the events of the original. The game works as both a prequel and a sequel to the first game, exploring events that take place before and after the original.
Overall, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is an excellent follow up and a worthy continuation of the series. 10/10.

Hotline Miami 2 was a good time overall. The gameplay is still fast, brutal, and satisfying, and the soundtrack carries a lot of the experience.
The story definitely confused me for a good portion of the game with all the different characters and timelines, but once things started coming together, I actually ended up liking where it went.

You longer have the ability to swap between masks as you don't play as one character, but each level has preset characters to choose from. It may seem like a downgrade at first, but each level has been made with these characters in mind. They also have their own weapons and abilities that are very helpful during most encounters.

The game follows multiple protagonists across different timelines, all of whom are connected to or reacting to Jacket's massacres in the first instalment. This makes the game quite confusing, but important story beats still come across.
Once you've finished the game, I can heavily recommend Ovandal's video on YT, if you are looking for a good overview or some answers.

The gameplay has seen tremendous improvements from the original game, the maps are bigger, there are more enemy types added to keep you on your toes, and the soundtrack continues to be a great highlight.
Instead of having one character who wears multiple masks, you get to play as multiple characters, whose stories intersect in unexpected, interesting, and sometimes tragic ways. Each one has a passive that will help them complete their levels, with some having multiple playstyles to help them through a level, like the fans being comprised of fanatics who wish to follow in the footsteps of Jacket, a writer who can beat levels without killing (even going as far as to remove ammo from guns he picks up), a soldier who can switch between a ranged weapon and a knife on the fly, and much more. Due to this, the story is much more expansive than HM1, yet still leaves just enough up to interpretation to allow you to fill in the gaps on your own.
