\n\t\t\t\t\tI’m enjoying PoE2, but I still strongly prefer PoE1’s approach to character building.

In PoE1, the socket system in weapons and armor gave you enormous flexibility.

You could take one skill and keep layering mechanics onto it until it became something completely ridiculous and uniquely yours. A projectile could split, chain, ricochet, leech, trigger other effects, and the fun came from seeing how far you could push the system.

The passive tree supported that same philosophy. I would often create entire “highways” of minor nodes just to reach a cluster or notable that genuinely changed how my build played.

The small nodes were the cost of getting somewhere interesting, and the payoff usually felt worth it.

In PoE2, I rarely feel that same incentive. A lot of supports feel less like upgrades and more like tightly controlled tradeoffs: more projectiles, but less damage; chain, but less damage; more speed, but another penalty somewhere else. The passive tree also feels much less rewarding to path across when the destination often amounts to another modest numerical increase instead of something that meaningfully changes the build.

PoE1 felt like the game handed me a huge box of parts and said, “see what you can make.”
PoE2 feels like it hands me the same box with a rulebook attached.

I understand the balance philosophy, but for me that restraint comes at the cost of experimentation, build identity, and the sheer fun of creating something stupidly powerful and weird.\t\t\t\t\t

I've played plenty of different classes and builds, and I'm currently having a blast throwing grenades at everything as a Gemling. There's always another class or build to try, another upgrade to chase, and apparently another few hundred hours to accidentally lose

Very few games have kept me this hooked for this long, and I genuinely look forward to each new season

\n\t\t\t\t\tLet's take it back to January of 2025. I found out that Elon Musk was boosting on a game. I decided to look it up and instantly recognized the Diablo influence. I said "okay cool whatever" and decided to move on with my life.

A couple of months later I decided to finally try out Diablo. I hopped on Xbox's Gamepass and downloaded Diablo 4 through {LINK REMOVED}Battle.Net. Man what a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disappointment. I made it to endgame and decided to slowly shift my way to penitent. It was just simply boring. Campaign was honestly great, albeit short, but the endgame felt like it was designed to rip the literal wallet out of my pockets. It was incredibly predatory and altogether just not worth the expansions + season pass to me. I quit after 30/40 hours.

Now, in contrast, a couple of months ago, I decided to pick up the EA for POE2. I found out it was planned to be a FTP game and felt slightly scammed. A week later I realized I had received the exact amount of currency in game as I had spent on my EA purchase. I stopped feeling scammed right then.

Let me start by going slightly into depth with monetization. GGG does away with the (what I now consider) primitive practices of scamming your players. One of the best parts about all of this is their 13 year track record and the adaptations that come with it. Almost every cosmetic mtx from POE was ported over to POE2. People have spent thousands on that game, and GGG's willingness to bring those purchases to the next generation, while also backporting new cosmetics, is genuinely exactly what I want to see from FTP games. Hell, I emailed them to refund me on something that said "no refunds" and they were willing to do it no questions asked. One of the only companies in gaming that I do truly think "cares", albeit only as much as capitalism allows it.

All that being said, the FTP gimmick in this game arises through stash space yet again. Somehow, my least favourite MMO mechanic of locking inventory space behind a paywall finds a way to haunt me in this game as well!!! Truly though, I found it more than bearable in this game. Permanent inventory space that persists over all characters in both games was cool, but giving me the currency to purchase that inventory with my purchase of the game? ♥♥♥♥ IT. I'm about 50usd into my stash tabs already and don't regret a single thing. I could literally not play this game again for another 5 years and I still wouldn't regret it because I know my purchases will be there when I'm back.

The combat - truth be told - is the best I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing in a true ARPG. When looking at gameplay, I thought it to be almost "souls dodge slop" mixed with the roguelike visual clutter. It's really not. It's an ARPG that actually cares about pacing (at least until endgame lol.) I love that deliberate movements are king over abilities and stat pools, because the game forces you into situations where you would have to dodge attacks during combat or consider positioning prior to attacking.

Buildcrafting is absolutely king, and without a doubt the best I've ever experienced. The skill tree was honestly what intimidated me more than anything before I picked up the game, but truth be told, as a Destiny 2 fan, I found the buildcrafting in that game exponentially harder because you had to be so precise (To clarify, this perspective is about rigidity and structure.)

While POE2's skill tree may look daunting, it's actually quite simple because 90% of your nodes are about stats rather than abilities. The Skill/Support/Spirit gem system completely alleviates any and all pressure. I even respec'd 1/4 of my tree at endgame for a literal 1/5 fraction of my gold. I can't say the game encourages true creativity in buildcrafting as a full respec is a heavy commitment, but, it does let you fix your mistakes. Despite those economic restrictions on experimentation, it's still - without a doubt - the most brilliant I've ever experienced.

The graphics are absolutely stunning. Diablo 4 looked good, but this is a completely different level (Sorry, I have to compare the 2 biggest ARPGs today.)

To keep things short, I think POE2's colour grading is some of the best I've ever seen in a video game. This isn't something that most people consider consciously, but it is something EVERYONE considers subconsciously. You don't need the abhorrent 2026 lighting slop package to make a comfortable game that still catches the EYE. This may be the best proof of that concept, like ever. The unique animations, breadth of ecosystems in the maps, and variety of enemies make this game just feel constantly fresh throughout the endgame. Playing on DLAA with a 5070ti gave me some absolutely stunning moments where I would just pause and stare at the scenery.

The netcode is obviously the absolute worst part about this game. I drop from 10-15 ping to 200 at least once a play session. I am playing in my region and I don't think my connection to the server is the issue here. The fact that it is my only complaint though, says a lot.

Overall, I do think this game will one day, not only be a phenomenon, but something the coming generation will love and look back on. This game has the makings of a classic. All things considered, if GGG follows the route they seem to be taking, they have a fan for life.

Feel free to leave any and all honest criticism on my writing. I do feel as though this one is disjointed and more of a collection of thoughts and opinions, but I'm tired and just wanted to bleed words.

I will probably delete this and transform it into my real review one day about 70000 in game hours from now.... or maybe when I get serious and lock in on becoming a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game journalist on Medium who's opinion somehow counts on metacritic lmao

1. The game actually runs fairly decent on my POS laptop.
2. The shapeshifting abilities start out kind of slow but the damage does ramp if you stick to it.
3. I wish there was a paladin class or something similar.
4. Some mobs hit like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mac truck on steroids.
5. Some mobs are stupid weak.

The game performance is abysmal.
- Non-stop memory leak. I've done all the steps to fix the slowing framerates and nothing works. Worked fine when the game first came out. Every update makes it worse.
- Constant stuttering whenever my internet is even slightly slower than usual.

The gameplay itself is a ton of fun, obviously I was obsessed. But with the broken economy and the performance issues, the game is unplayable. An offline mode would at least solve the stutter problem. And the trade economy is just stupid.\t\t\t\t\t

Slow and methodical versus constantly being rushed by hordes of enemies.
Slower pacing versus still being forced to replay campaign that is unnecessary long and feels like slog with some questionable level design and huge maps that are boring to traverse, forcing you to lean into "zoom" aspect that is PoE 1 known for, yet PoE2 tries to avoid.
And no, sprint does not fix this. Still feels more like a bait (considering you are getting punished easily for it).
Even the quests, zones and lore I find kind of forgettable, opposed to PoE1 which had some very memorable moments.

Sure, visually the game looks good (the animations, VFX, etc.), soundtrack is banger as always.
But the gameplay loop still sits in this weird spot where the game does not know what it wants to actually be.
Which is weird, considering that PoE 1 should give GGG enough pointers what to improve and what to avoid.

Really fun gameplay, well optimized, beautiful, all of that. If you enjoy ARPG's, you will love this.
But:

- No damage log, no death log, no "last 5 hits", nothing. Yet towards endgame, the screen fills with so much effects and clutter that it's impossible to track what kills you.
- Despite that, there is a 10% XP death penalty. And towards the end, gaining a single level can take days of grinding. So a single death that you can't foresee or check out after the fact sets you back hours of grinding.
- Crafting is still a clunky and unintuitive mess with hundreds of crafting items and zero guidance for new players.
- Help menu got removed in favor of tooltips that don't explain how stats and items work on a mechanical level.
For example: " X% of Armour applies to Elemental damage" Does it apply to damage taken or done? Or both? How does armour work? At what point in the calculations is it applied? Is this worth taking, is flat resistance better or a mix of both? Good luck working that out without damage logs.
- Core and League Mechanics are often only explained on a superficial level
- GGG claimed to import all MTX from PoE 1 "with high priority", One year later, none were implemented.

Again, it's a great ARPG. But it has significant flaws and issues that stem from Game design ideas that were getting old in the 90's.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tYou spend more time trying to find gear or make gear then you do playing the game 🎯 it's insane how they can make a game with so many ways to make your character unique but then never give you gear to actually progress the game when your lvl 60 and stuck on a boss because you gear is 20 lvl below your own lvl and you finally beat the boss and it drops a level 12 pair of gloves that have absolutely nothing to do with your character really puts a sour taste in your mouth I desperately wanted this to be good but I find my self wishing it was more stremlined gear wise like diablo I love everything else about this game skill tree character development the way you can infuse skills with other skills it's peak but when I'm spending over 100 hours of my 300 gearing up just to have all that gear become useless 3 lvls later and not getting anything better makes you want to shut it off\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI like POE1. Very much, one of my favorite games. And I hate POE2 with every piece of my body and soul. The money and time spent on this pile of ♥♥♥♥ could be invested in anything and we would've won as humanity x10.

Initially I wanted to describe what makes this game ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in a long review, but I've ended up realizing it's too much and this game is not worth any more time spent on it, even for the review.
In a few words: the damn obsession with Dark Souls rolls, boss animations and low-life mindset.

Your hero moves like a damn turtle and it could easily be +10% MS as BASELINE. Playing this game and doing the mapping without 30-35% MS boots is just masochism. Rolling modifiers which slow you AND YOUR ROLLS is just a waste of your time and nerves. Slow should have a limit or be multiplicative instead of additive. Gatekeeping ascendancy points with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SANCTUM (it's called differently tho) IS INSANITY. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanic you literally cannot skip. Well, you can try Ultimatum, but it's also not a very favorite league among players. A lot of bugs where you can get stuck, desync is basically core to GGG, but here it's literally much more noticeable.
Bosses will greet you with some intro that will take forever to finish and half of them will have a "phase" in which they are immune and will hide below the sand or rotate like a siren, which will take you like 30-60s easily. It's fine for the campaign, but for maps where you're farming them it's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, like zero reason to defend this or leave it as-is.
