\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI was fortunate enough to go into this game blind, knowing nothing about it. And in the spirit of keeping this review vague so others may experience what I did, all I will say is that this game is one of a kind. I yearn for games like this set in alien oceans.
The base building in this game is simple and fairly enjoyable, and this is from someone who dislikes base building in pretty much any game. Exploration is integral and rewarding, as you get to learn more about the world you are in and all accompanying mysteries. That being said, resource hunting can be a chore early on, and still a chore but to a lesser degree in the latter half of the game, but if you can endure it, you are in for a great time.
Mechanics aside, the story is alright, there isn't anything novel. You learn a lot of what happened on the planet from the logs scattered around the world, which gives yet another reason for continuing to explore the world. Story also feels like it wasn't getting enough attention past the 75% mark, so it felt like there was more that could've been done with it.
Overall, this game is one of those rare 10/10's that if you are fortunate to go into blind, will be a hell of a ride, and seeing as this game goes on sale often enough, I recommend buying it at that time\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

but one of my beloved viewer asked me to try this game and i'm glad i did. i had to squint my eyes couple of times cuz of fear and i had to run back (almost the whole game) to my safe pod. i learned slowly, yes.. but i'm so proud i did my very best to progress the story!
โ i managed to upgrade my life-saving equipments (O2 tank, fins, knife, etc etc)
โ i managed to fix the radio and my safe pod!
โ i managed to find materials that i need to make stuffs (LOL)
it maybe nothing to some people, but it's a big achievement for me!!
streamed it for 3 hours without i even noticed! couldn't get off the chair and my body felt stiff just like being beaten by a whole bunch of classmates, but i'm planning to go back and study more about this game. it's THAT good, it makes me wanna play again and again despite of the fear.

Playing as an under prepared silent protagonist isolated on a very ominous patch of submerged land where ancient secrets are buried really helps frame how terrifying the concept is. It has unmatched fear factor, zero hand holding, minimal dialogue, all show no tell, terrifying yet stunning environment and ambience, and when it's dark it's DARK making you more careful what you might run into, great environmental story telling, visuals are easy on the eyes and the soundtrack is so well paced during gameplay. I donโt play survival games very often, but this one hooked me so much that I became addicted to it for several days. Iโm always surprised by how an indie studio can create such a complex game that also looks genuinely amazing. On top of that, thereโs a great mix of a beautiful underwater world combined with horror elements. The gameplay feels very smooth, the music is incredible, and the story is excellent, even though itโs told in an unusual way, mainly through reading logs and recordings. I also love the Cyclops mechanic, where you can essentially turn it into your own mobile fortress. Overall, this game gave me something I hadnโt experienced in other games before, which is a fear of the deep ocean while also being amazed by everything that can be discovered within it.

Saw the original on sale for 75% off and figured thereโs literally never been a better time to dive in.
Going backwards like this is actually pretty interesting because it gives you a massive appreciation for the dynamic improvements theyโre working on for the sequel. For example, in the first game, you manually have to have the minerals or supplies right on your person to use the fabricator, rather than the system just pulling automatically from nearby base storage. Itโs nothing crazy or game-ruining, just one of those quality-of-life differences you notice immediately.
Speaking of animations, playing the original makes you realize how much detail went into the first game compared to some of the rough edges in Subnautica 2โs alpha. Take the air bladderโin this first game, the animation is great and the character holds it properly. In the sequel, you notice the button is actually on the bottom and you're holding the whole thing upside down. Itโs obviously just one of those funny early access oversights that I'm sure they'll fix, but going backward really lets you spot those little details.
That said, the original game holds up incredibly well. Itโs great to see that the quality of the graphics was just as nice back then as they are now; the game is absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere is unmatchedโthe transition from the bright, beautiful shallow reefs to the pitch-black, terrifying deep ocean is brilliant. What people absolutely love about this game (and what hooked me instantly) is how it balances that pure awe of exploration with genuine terror, all without relying on cheap jump scares. The sound design alone, from the ambient music to the distant roar of a Reaper Leviathan, is a masterpiece.
Itโs not perfect, of course. Being an older indie title, it has some legendary quirks. The pop-in can be pretty bad when youโre moving fast in a vehicleโyouโll literally watch terrain and wreckage render right in front of your face. There are also the classic physics glitches, like your Seamoth occasionally clipping into a island or getting stuck inside a solid rock wall if you park it too close to a texture.
But honestly? None of that takes away from the experience. For a game that came out years ago, itโs a masterclass in survival design. If you loved what you saw in the early looks of the sequel, getting this on sale is a no-brainer. Itโs a beautiful, terrifying ride.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
