Playing the early game wasn't painfully boring, but I did feel my interest waning at times and checking the clock, wanting to end my sessions earlier than I usually would because all I would do at first is ‘explore’, eat and craft without direction. According to global achievement data, that is the point where most players drop off. I recommend that you push through it if you feel like quitting the game at that moment.
All of that was before finding my first facility, which is basically the main way the game feeds you its lore. The mystery of the planet, and what’s been happening there before you even boarded the Aurora for the first time is very grabbing. After the first major rescue breakthrough, it feels as if the entire planet is alive, and it desperately wants to keep you from leaving. It almost became an inanimate antagonist to me before I learned more about it.
That’s when I started getting really immersed. I noticed how the game guides you with organic things like your surroundings and little details about the creatures around you, or the data logs which require you to look for major locations based on landmarks and vague descriptions rather than quest markers. At one point, even achievement names started giving me clues for finding my next objectives.
The environment really helps with the immersion. Resources do not respawn, and fish take a while to repopulate, so it really feels like you’re exhausting an underwater ecosystem. It made me want to be careful with what I take and where I hunt, and it resulted in creating a self-sustaining base with renewable resources feeling like a major achievement. I even started breeding prey fish and releasing them around my base to help offset my early game impact. If I happened to hatch something unexpected (or too scary to keep in one aquarium with my poor peepers) I travelled to its native biome to release it somewhere safe. I made sure to never clear out the whole plant cluster to give them opportunity for propagation, which may not even be a mechanic, but that’s how alive the game felt to me. The fish around you live independently of you and your needs. They have preferred ways of living, they hunt and fight other creatures, they set up traps, they travel in groups and some of them even ‘play’. You can even tell how young or old some of them are, or assume where the reefbacks may have been traveling through based on what’s attached to their shell. Maybe you’ll find rare species migrating through a biome if you’re lucky. Even the unpleasant mechanics are interesting to learn about, like when you figure out why your batteries are getting drained way too fast, or why that one squid won’t leave you the hell alone.
Playing this game blind may have been the best way to experience it. I’m very happy with what it’s given me, so I’ll make sure to recommend it to people I like. If you haven’t played it yet, or were one of the people who quit it early, give it a chance to immerse you. Don’t look it up online, just approach your problems like a puzzle and let it surprise you. As long as you know how to get food and water, you should take it at your own pace and stop hurrying to the credits. That’s when Subnautica is at its best.

Having barely touched the first game before, seeing the massive differences between the two titles has been incredible. After 40 hours of playtime, I am completely immersed. I am only halfway through the story right now because I want to fully explore everything. To discover every single corner, you will easily need at least 80 to 100 hours.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tFinally finished it, bought literally a week after it launched in 2018, I remember the constant updates that added more and more things to the game, I used to be a kid, and I was so scared to play it, I remember that it didn't had an ending yet, now I'm a young adult, in college, finally had the moment to play it in its complete glory, I did everything I could in The Crater, scanned every little thing, and visited every single biome, got all of the achievements, and all I can say is that it is an amazing game, so satisfying to play and progress, even if it is still a little scary, I will always remember the experience and carry it with me like all the others story games I've played before, I can only say thank you to the developers and everyone involved in the game, and now I'll try to save some money to see if I can buy Below Zero and Subnautica 2 to keep supporting this story and experience it just like when I was still a kid. 10/10\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

When you swim close to the rear part of the aurora in the beginning and get a view of the underwater flora and fauna ,that's just marvelous.Also the rear part of the aurora has tons of loot for early game. The exploration, mystery, horror, storytelling is awesome! Also the goated music that plays while exploring.

Eu sinceramente achava que não ia conseguir zerar, porque não sou muito bom nesse tipo de jogo, mas ele consegue ser um jogo de sobrevivência sem ser extremamente difícil. A estética do jogo é muito boa e a exploração do oceano é incrível. Joguei cerca de 30 horas e nem vi o tempo passar. Também passei muito medo em vários momentos, principalmente por causa das criaturas e dos Leviatãs, que conseguem ser assustadores de verdade. Subnautica is one of my favorite games, mostly because of the setting. Planet 4546B is a treat to explore and offers so much in terms of fauna and flora to discover. Subnautica also steers from the basic procedural generation most Survival games tend to do, the map is actually hand crafted and the same for each player, the only thing that varies is the location of your life pod. It also has a story and an actual ending to the game, which while not great serves as a good backdrop to the gameplay.
One thing to mention however is that Subnauticas technical state leaves a lot to be desired, especially later on in the game this is a massive problem. As soon as you get access to the Prawn suit and the grappling hook attachment the games technical state is decimated. You might notice a lot of pop in throughout the game which while immersion breaking atleast doesnt hinder your progress. However after the Prawn suit as you are swinging about and going faster than the game can handle, you will fall through the world and lose your Prawn suit. Hell I even got stuck in a part of the Aurora wreck at one point because the game failed to load it fast enough and when it did I could not move from the wreck.
Adding to this Subnautica looks awesome underwater, you get constant reminders you are actually underwater via bubbles, light rays, water movement around you. However the few sections where you are actually walking outside the water, be it on Aurora orthe islandsthe game feels much worse and floaty, not to mention these sections look much worse.
Achievement wise it is pretty simple, all of the achievements are story related outside of 2 of them, one of them being Mans Best Friend, which is to find a Cuddlefish Egg, hatching it and releasing it into the water.And the other is to leave behind a time capsule for Leave Only Time Capsule, which must be done prior to you escaping the planet.Now I am not sure if this one is story related or optional as it has been a while since I played the game up to this point, however regardless like I said you can return to your save file after the ending. Another thing to mention is that Subnautica has a lot of difficulty options, you can choose any of them and make the playthrough easier (obviously outside of creative mode).
Subnautica offers a lot of great things, be it the exploration, the world design, the immersion especially via the sound effects and the soundtrack. I however recommend this only if you are able to look past the technical state of the game, which as Ive said is pretty poor.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

All the mysteries are interesting enough to keep you going, the twists in the story are very well done, exploring the ocean is both fun and frightening and the crafting is very well integrated with the exploration rather than just being about making survival more convenient. It's the perfect mix of survival (you can even turn off the survival aspect if you prefer), story, exploration and horror. Can't wait for them to finish 2.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
