Excellent combat, memorable characters, beautiful cinematic direction and surprisingly good character development make this one of my favorite action games in a while. It does suffer from repeated bosses and fairly basic side content, but the core experience is strong enough that I rarely stopped having fun.
This was my first Onimusha game, so I went into Way of the Sword without any nostalgia for the older titles or expectations about what an Onimusha game should be. I can only judge it for what it is, and what I got was an incredibly enjoyable action game with one of the most satisfying combat systems I have played recently.
Combat is easily the star of the show.
Capcom gives you plenty of weapons and different ways to approach fights, and learning how to properly use everything is genuinely satisfying. Parries, deflections, counters and Issen attacks give fights a great rhythm where aggression and precision are equally important. At first you can get away with simply reacting to enemies, but the better you become, the more stylish and controlled the combat starts to feel.
There is something incredibly satisfying about standing your ground against a powerful Genma, reading its attack, deflecting at exactly the right moment and immediately turning defense into offense. The game rewards learning enemy patterns without feeling like it wants to punish you simply for making a mistake.
Weapon variety helps a lot as well. Different weapons are not there just to slightly change damage numbers. They give you different tools and encourage you to experiment with how you approach encounters. Even after many hours I was still enjoying fights simply because controlling Musashi feels so good.
And then there are the cutscenes.
Honestly, almost every important cutscene in this game is CINEMA.
The direction, animation, camera work and character performances are excellent. There were multiple moments where I simply put the controller down and watched. Capcom clearly wanted Way of the Sword to feel like a supernatural samurai movie, and in my opinion they absolutely succeeded.
Using Toshiro Mifune's likeness for Musashi could easily have felt like a gimmick, but it works extremely well. His facial expressions, posture and attitude give Musashi a huge amount of personality.
The supporting cast deserves praise too. The characters are colorful, expressive and often surprisingly funny. The game knows when to take itself seriously and when to let its characters breathe. That mixture of horror, violence, comedy and exaggerated personalities gives Onimusha a charm that I did not expect going in.
Musashi himself was probably my favorite part of the story.
At first the plot seems fairly simple, and honestly, on paper it is. Demons are invading Kyoto, Musashi receives power he never asked for, and now he has to deal with it. But underneath that simple premise there is a story about what strength actually means.
Musashi begins the game arrogant, selfish and obsessed with proving his ability as a swordsman. He does not see himself as some noble hero chosen to save everyone. He wants to rely on his own skill, and even the power of the Oni Gauntlet feels almost insulting to him because it gives him strength that he did not earn through the sword.
Watching that attitude gradually change was one of the things I enjoyed most about the story. He does not suddenly become a completely different person. He is still Musashi, still confident, crude and stubborn, but he slowly starts accepting responsibility and caring about people beyond his own path as a swordsman.
That simple character arc gives the story more depth than I initially expected.
The setting also deserves a mention. The combination of historical Japan, traditional folklore, grotesque Genma and almost theatrical samurai storytelling works beautifully. Kyoto is atmospheric, and some environments are absolutely gorgeous. The creature designs are especially good, with many Genma looking like something pulled directly from a disturbing old Japanese painting.
Performance on PC was also excellent in my experience. The game looks great, runs extremely smoothly and offers plenty of graphics settings. Considering how good some of the environments, effects and cinematic sequences look, the optimization deserves praise.
Unfortunately, Way of the Sword does have one noticeable problem: repetition.
Bosses are reused too often.
The strange thing is that I still enjoyed fighting them. Most bosses look fantastic, have fun movesets and work extremely well with the combat system. Fighting a good boss again can even be satisfying because it gives you an opportunity to see how much better you have become.
But there is a limit.
When the same bosses or minibosses start appearing repeatedly, some encounters lose the impact they had the first time. A creature that initially felt intimidating eventually becomes just another familiar obstacle.
The same issue affects some of the side content. Many side quests are fairly simple and exist mostly to give you upgrade materials, resources or another opportunity to fight. They are useful for strengthening Musashi, but if you are looking for elaborate side stories with deep characters and difficult choices, you probably will not find much of that here.
Lady Murasaki's requests are a notable exception. Her Curious Cases add more personality and context to the world, and I found them much more interesting from a storytelling perspective than most of the standard optional activities.
Some of the rifts and other recurring objectives also start feeling repetitive later in the game. The combat is good enough to carry these sections, but there were moments where I would rather have continued the main story instead of clearing another familiar encounter.
This creates occasional pacing problems, especially if you are someone like me who likes completing optional content instead of rushing through the main path.
Still, those problems never ruined the game for me.
The reason is simple: the foundations are just too good. Combat remains satisfying, Musashi is a great protagonist, the cast has personality, the bosses are visually fantastic even when reused, and the cinematic presentation is some of Capcom's best work.
As someone who had never played an Onimusha game before, Way of the Sword made me understand why people were excited to see this series return.
It has flaws, and I would love to see a sequel with more varied side quests, fewer recycled encounters and more unique bosses throughout the entire campaign.
But as my first step into Onimusha?

If there's one company that has truly mastered the art of making a comeback, it's Capcom. The term "Capcom Redemption" feels so outdated at this point that it should probably be reserved for companies like Ubisoft instead.
I'm not a Soulslike fan, and I generally stay away from games in the genre. But deep down, I've always wanted to experience Sekiro. Unfortunately, its punishing difficulty was simply too much for me.
And then came Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
After playing this game, I almost forgot about Sekiro. All I want now is more Onimusha.
The combat system is absolutely fantastic, complemented by wonderful boss design that makes every major encounter feel exciting and rewarding. I enjoyed the combat so much that I played through almost every boss fight on Action Mode, with the exception of the final two or three. And for once, I genuinely didn't mind dying over and over again.
That's probably the biggest compliment I can give this game. It made someone who usually avoids punishing combat experiences embrace the challenge simply because the gameplay was that enjoyable.
The music is excellent, especially during boss fights, where it perfectly complements the intensity of the encounters. The world is beautifully designed, and the story is engaging, supported by a cast of genuinely lovable characters.
However, there is one aspect of the game that I found disappointing: the side quests.
They become incredibly repetitive, often recycling the same encounters and even reusing bosses. Rather than offering meaningful additional content, many of them feel like they exist primarily to encourage grinding and provide more upgrade materials. Considering how strong the main experience is, I wish this part of the game had received the same level of attention and creativity.
Thankfully, this issue does very little to diminish the overall experience.
For me, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic 9/10.
With its outstanding combat, memorable boss encounters, beautiful world, and excellent music, it's one of those games that reminds me why I love gaming in the first place.
I sincerely hope Capcom continues investing in this franchise, because after this experience, I don't just want another Onimusha game.

3й крупный экшен от Capcom за год, и для меня это второй по крутости после Pragmata, которая все еще лично для меня является лучшей игрой в году. Онимуша классный релиз, но не для меня по субъективным причинам.
После прохождения Onimusha, вывел для себя, что я вообще не фанат игр, упор которых только на боевую систему, или боссов, при условии что игра долгая в прохождении. Лично для меня, боссы и сражения не оправдывают большой хронометраж, они того не стоят, я люблю крутые боевые системы и классных боссов, я это ценю, уважаю, но только ради них терпеть долгие сайд-активности как-то mehh. И к сожалению, Onimusha именно тот случай, где весь основной креатив уходит на Боссов и Боевку. В этом проекте одни из самых красивые melee-анимаций на мечах в индустрии, и это при условии огромном количестве механик, которые игрок используют на большом кол-ве врагов с отличным, и большим мувсетом. А самих боевых механик здесь много, это все еще привычный нам parry-action, но с кучей возможностей помимо parry, особенно мне нравится скилл-зависимый Иссэн, благодаря одной кнопки с мельчайшим таймингом, ты можешь и уклониться и атаковать одновременно, и за такой респектовый мув - большая награда, ваншот обычного моба, либо 5-10% здоровья босса. Больше всего мне нравится, когда за конкретные действия во время боя, ты получаешь ресурсы которые тратишь на боевые механики (Ультимейт, активная способность или же здоровье). Здесь это выполнено очень классно, исходя из ситуации выбираешь, что тебе важнее всего, что подойдет лучше для эффектного либо эффективного боя. Но в таких играх мне все таки важна работа с локациями и активностями, можно привести в пример серию DMC, где кроме боевки и боссов, казалось бы, ничего и нет, но там и темп быстрее, и хронометраж меньше, так еще и разбавлено хоть и корявым, но платформингом, благодаря этому, лично я, не уставал от игры и кайфовал. Я принимаю большой хрон, и большие локации с активностями в Onimusha, как ИДЕЮ, но реализация на уровне OK, и с большим хроном,и продолжительностью активностей начинает переутомлять, и к середине уже вызывает негатив. Сами активности до ужаса стандартные, коллектблсы, пойди убей, с одним и тем же сценарием в каждом квесте. Отмечу только прикольные квесты с поиском сокровищ по фотографии, в любой игре нравится такая активность Что касается линейно-сюжетных локаций, они меня до дури задушивали, на мой взгляд разработчики передушили с “проход закрыт, найди как открыть”, этот прием в игре используется ПОСТОЯННО, а в пред финальной локации возведен в абсолют. Из-за этого, я потерял львиную долю удовольствия от игры, и это сказалось на моих впечатления от боссов и сражений. Да, они ахуенные, но мне это все похерила продолжительность и качество локаций, мне откровенно уже было ♥♥♥♥♥ на этих боссов, но в моменте прикольно.
На историю стало откровенно плевать после 2 часа, как-то игра стала заваливать меня водяными диалогами о тяжком бремени людей, но постановочные кат-сцены и игра японских актеров невероятная - самое настоящее аниме, с очень давящей и темной атмосферой, но гиперболизированные эмоции и биззарные действия персонажей делают свой уникальный самурайский шарм, очень уникально для видеоигр в таком сеттинге. В целом атмосфера классная в игре и арт, жаль только музыка подкачала, вообще ничего не запомнилось.

После прохождения Onimusha, вывел для себя, что я вообще не фанат игр, упор которых только на боевую систему, или боссов, при условии что игра долгая в прохождении. Лично для меня, боссы и сражения не оправдывают большой хронометраж, они того не стоят, я люблю крутые боевые системы и классных боссов, я это ценю, уважаю, но только ради них терпеть долгие сайд-активности как-то mehh. И к сожалению, Onimusha именно тот случай, где весь основной креатив уходит на Боссов и Боевку. В этом проекте одни из самых красивые melee-анимаций на мечах в индустрии, и это при условии огромном количестве механик, которые игрок используют на большом кол-ве врагов с отличным, и большим мувсетом. А самих боевых механик здесь много, это все еще привычный нам parry-action, но с кучей возможностей помимо parry, особенно мне нравится скилл-зависимый Иссэн, благодаря одной кнопки с мельчайшим таймингом, ты можешь и уклониться и атаковать одновременно, и за такой респектовый мув - большая награда, ваншот обычного моба, либо 5-10% здоровья босса. Больше всего мне нравится, когда за конкретные действия во время боя, ты получаешь ресурсы которые тратишь на боевые механики (Ультимейт, активная способность или же здоровье). Здесь это выполнено очень классно, исходя из ситуации выбираешь, что тебе важнее всего, что подойдет лучше для эффектного либо эффективного боя. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhen Onimusha was announced, i was cautious with my hype. After all, its pretty rare for a company to successfully unearth a franchise without ruining it. Well i was wrong. Onimusha is back and it is a pretty solid action game that has some changes when compared to previous installements. The game is played entirely with one sword instead of a varied arsenal. The villian is comically evil and actually interacts with you throughout the game instead of being stern evil guy that only shows up at the end of the journey. The combat is gorgeous to look at and hella fun with its Sekiro touches on the parry department and the ability to cancel your own inputs at any time. And now you have a pseudo-open world that acts as your main hub and place to do sidequests instead of a linear campaign with secrets scattered among the "stages".
Story is your typical Good vs. Evil, nothing to complain here. Game lenght is ok though i don't like that it has some content padding. Difficulty is kinda funny to discuss since A LOT of souls-like fans decided to show up and act like Onimusha is the next installement of Eldenborne, Shadows Nightreign the Souls. Onimusha was never like that. Enemies always took turns to hit you and even on higher difficulties you wouldn't get a bar brawl with the fodder. I am on the opinion that the difficulty is ok, it has its annoying moments but if you are paying attention you will pass through easily. The Story difficulty rank is piss-easy, Action is easy with some stuff that might catch you at first but it is not that bad and Carnage, the unlockable difficulty, demands you to master the combat system in order to deal consistent damage, If you just parry with the sword and doesn't know how to do Issens, you will despise how long it takes to kill stuff in the game.
Well, i guess that's it. I will list some stuff that bothered me but i still consider it a solid purchase. Buy it on sale or not. Oh and don't waste time with Premium or Deluxe editions unless you REAALLY like the new sword skins, capes and/or clothes. The exclusive charms aren't must-haves.

Things that bothered me
- This game has falling damage. If you manage to jump from a roof or go down a cliff without a ladder and the distance between those and the floor is a bit too far, you will take damage and maybe even die. WHY?! WHY IMPLEMENT THIS?!
- Small things regarding menus that reminds me of Dragon's Dogma 2. Why you need to restock your Item Wheel yourself instead of auto filling it once you use a Spirit Mirrorr? Because it is more realistic. Why you MUST look at the main map to add a new objective instead of just having it added while you play? Because it is more reallistic! Why do i need to leave the Training Grounds so i can use the Spirit Mirror to change my sword or clothes? BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A DIFFERENT DIMENSION. IT IS REALISTIC!!! :3
- You having only the base sword with some skins to change its look if it gets too boring. It is not a big factor that makes the game a "no buy" but i grew up with Raizan, Shippu, Buraitou, Kuga, Hyosai and many others. Let's not even talk about Dawn of Dreams with its huge arsenal.
- The padding in this game is... lame. You have the main story and a lot of side stories. All of those side stories are: Go to X and kill mobs. Maybe there is a portal that spawns groups of Genma with one of the 2 variants of mid-boss. After the 10th story you start to groan that you need to do those. Now you must be thinking that you
can just skip those, right? Nope. Skipping stores result in less skill upgrades and less materials to raise your sword/armor/gauntlet. Yes, you don't use souls to level up your equipment anymore. You "craft" your upgrades with amazing items such as cloth and iron...
- The game has a New Game + system that allows you to bring most stuff to the same or higher difficulty. They should've allowed you to bring everything and upped the difficulty even more if you used this system. Having to redo all the side stories on Carnage difficulty after going through the game because you need the materials to re-upgrade your stuff is really boring.
- Carnage difficulty being the final difficulty increase and it is just a HP increase. Although i am perfectly aware of the difficulty levels of old Onimushas and how they worked, just increasing the HP and the new stagger bars to the point you need to deliver Issens to make meaningful damage is not enough nowadays. I know there is a mod already that modifies enemy behavior but i think such a thing should've been done by the devs instead of requiring external modification. Also, there isn't a single change in mobs and the attacks of both bosses and mobs.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tA well rounded phenomenal game with a likeable and expressive cast of characters with vibrant personalities on show, addicting combat to master and possibly the most expressive and in my opinion, best protagonist a triple A game on a budget of this scale has seen in the last decade that is capable of standing on their own feet without it being an already established protagonist from the 2000's/2010's. I played using JP voices which seemed appropriate and the VA work was top notch.
Musashi pretty much steals every scene he appears in that is a full blown cutscene with his personality. Coming across as lax out of combat and relatable and becoming serious in combat but still shows signs of his at ease composure once he's done fighting. The little hop he does after a finisher is a nice touch. The supporting cast and antagonist also surprisingly show a lot of personality too. There is one character who is almost entirely stoic through the whole game but they show a lot at a certain point and are very expressive.
The most important aspect and question is if the gameplay was enjoyable and fun, it was.
Right now parry mechanics are sort of looked down on but this game incorporates it in a satisfying way.
There are three different types of parries throughout the entire game.
One is a normal enemy mob attack you can block it or parry it.
Two is a glowing attack with a glare accompanied by a jet engine sound.
This must be perfectly parried within a time window and can't be blocked/parried regularly.
Three is special parry that requires an additional input which increases the stagger to an enemy but its much harder to consistently pull off. This also works on unblockable attacks.
Sprinkling on a combat system that has perfect dodges into instant counter attacks from melee/ranged enemy types, a pseudo Devil Trigger mode with its own abilities, multiple Oni Armaments to use in combat to optimise your style of fighting and the"Clash" system in place which has unique animations for every enemy type and boss fight in the game. It just makes the whole package of combat enjoyable.
Small caveat would be that the ranged combat with the bow isn't incorporated into the base combat at all and is used more as a sneaking tool to get a shot in first/level exploration/mission objectives. A nice little detail I found is that if you attack just before an enemy's blade turns a slight tint of white (which isn't firstly noticeable or explained in its tutorial) that's the opening to attack and perform your strong counter attack.
Exploration is nice and doesn't feel monotonous, level design is nice and fluid although the laboratory section can feel drawn out in some instances depending on how quick/slow you are on defeating enemies. The levels are interesting though, that much can be said but it's not where the game shines the most, if anything they are as you'd expect, not great but definitely not terrible.
Where the game shines is it's Boss fights.
During boss fights when you manage to get the bosses stagger bar to zero you can do a critical hit.
However you can choose between resources or pure damage. (Souls to power your Oni weapons/Devil Trigger for less Boss damage or go directly for damage but no resources)
Along with the clash system and its very unique animations along side it's rock/paper system it makes every instance of the fight flow between traditional combat and a moment of reprieve.
I think there was only one boss fight I didn't really like although it's not that difficult but each other boss fight, even one of the more gimmicky ones was thoroughly enjoyable. So much that I replayed each boss again after I beat the game in its practice mode.
There is a mechanic in the game called Oni-vision which will trail you to your next objective, however this is only in the open world segment of the game and is not enabled by default. You can play the entire game without this function until you see an Oni portal, found a spot where a hidden treasure is at according the hint image given to you or are finding Genma notes, all of which appear in front of you on activation as a chest/portal and does not lead you to them. Main objectives will be highlighted in most cases as just an arrow on your map in the open world section.
It's not a difficult game though but that's what's great about it. It's more of a challenging game based on learning timings and opportunities to counter attack, along with parry sounds and visual effects. It's a satisfyingly challenging game with a system that you want to get good at because the core of its gameplay cycle sticks with you from the get-go but there are moments you're always caught off guard in a boss fight.
The writing and story is simplistic enough that it never becomes convoluted or feel boring. It hits all the story points well. The music is good but it didn't really shine until the final fight to me so it might be some of the weaker points of the game. The side-quests can become monotonous especially the Kubi hunting ones, although the rest are relatively short and don't feel like a chore. Collectables don't become a chore until after end game but there aren't that many to find if you've taken your time with the game. The game's performance ran poorly initially but after the first session it ran well and never had any issues. Although optimisation should always be a priority with these types of games.
Overall, definitely worth time sinking into.
They hit the nail on the head with the protagonist.
Do an expansion or keep him for a sequel, great facial work, attitude and personality. Very memorable.
The supporting cast and facial expression of characters are amazingly done.
The main combat is satisfying and fluid. Easy to learn, hard to master.
95% of the Bosses are great and memorable.
The music needs improvement but there are some good tracks.
Side-quests need a bit more to them to feel rewarding and memorable (additional hidden bosses maybe).
Story and writing is good as well as the direction of cutscenes.
Exploration and level design is good although there are some outliers (Lab, Malice Flowers)
Collectables don't seem like a chore and are hidden well enough.
It's objective guiding system is not intrusive like Sony™ funded games.

It's a satisfyingly challenging game with a system that you want to get good at because the core of its gameplay cycle sticks with you from the get-go but there are moments you're always caught off guard in a boss fight.
The writing and story is simplistic enough that it never becomes convoluted or feel boring. It hits all the story points well. The music is good but it didn't really shine until the final fight to me so it might be some of the weaker points of the game. The side-quests can become monotonous especially the Kubi hunting ones, although the rest are relatively short and don't feel like a chore. Collectables don't become a chore until after end game but there aren't that many to find if you've taken your time with the game. The game's performance ran poorly initially but after the first session it ran well and never had any issues. Although optimisation should always be a priority with these types of games.
Overall, definitely worth time sinking into.
They hit the nail on the head with the protagonist.
Do an expansion or keep him for a sequel, great facial work, attitude and personality. Very memorable.
The supporting cast and facial expression of characters are amazingly done.
The main combat is satisfying and fluid. Easy to learn, hard to master.
95% of the Bosses are great and memorable.
The music needs improvement but there are some good tracks.
Side-quests need a bit more to them to feel rewarding and memorable (additional hidden bosses maybe).
Story and writing is good as well as the direction of cutscenes.
Exploration and level design is good although there are some outliers (Lab, Malice Flowers)
Collectables don't seem like a chore and are hidden well enough.
It's objective guiding system is not intrusive like Sony™ funded games.

The gameplay, the graphics, and the story are a solid 10/10. It came out of nowhere, yet it captured my mind and heart equally. The flawless combat and seamless storytelling easily make it one of the best titles this year. The game is honestly just fun. I also feel like Capcom is experimenting with game length lately, because this is one of their longer games overall, and it has been a wild ride from beginning to end.
As usual, story isn't exactly Capcom's strongest point, but there are some genuinely nice moments here and there. Even the villains have some weight to them despite occasionally being "comedy" characters.
The combat is where the game really shines, especially during boss fights. Some of them are incredibly fun and challenging. Regular enemies, however, are mostly a joke and can turn into button-mashing pretty quickly.
One thing that can be pretty anticlimactic is how most enemies follow the same formula, where you can essentially only fight one enemy at a time, even when you're surrounded by 20 of them. Archers are the main exception. It can make some encounters feel weird, but thankfully, you can skip most of the regular mobs if you don't feel like fighting them.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOnimusha combat is top tier, fighting multiple enemies is really fun, even if it's a boss fight.
Enemies can be more aggressive but I felt like gauntlet taunts them a little so no big deal.
Combat is also rewarding, more risk you take it definitely rewards you, landing Issen hits a LOT.
Characters are interesting, in my case I did not forget any of their name which is not common for me.
Exploring is fun, 100% going to do a Carnage playthrough.
IMO puzzle's are meh but damn constant help from Shizuka and Musashi was boring, no hard puzzle anyway at least let me figure out myself. Most games do this but in Onimusha they are really quick about giving you a tip, well focus of the game is not on puzzles at all so it didn't bother me too much.
Optimization is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing, my CPU is ass (12400F) so for me changing fps to more than 60 was creating problems in background only not in-game, pc was getting slower, I think it was optimized to be played at 60fps but did not felt like I was playing at 60 at all.
