Really good game, i feel like its not for everyone though. You really need to understand what you need in a party early on and look up knowledge online because this game is full of knowledge checks. RNG is in a weird place some times it got me frustrated sometimes it got me excited when i got virtue. At the start you will have the thrills of fighting scary intese fights against unknown new enemies and new areas, trying new strategies and all of that. But eventually you will discover what works best in each area and the gameplay crumbles down to risk minimizing procedures that starts right from team composition before any fight happens.
The game actively combats player creativity and self-expression, because both do not minimize risks and the potential loss is far too great to justify deviating from the "procedure".
One good thing about the game is the mod support and the current mod content, but I'd argue that only new classes mods are benefitial for the game. Enemy mods, specially ones that add new enemy to pre-existing areas (like the Crimson Court dlc), has the potential to only harm the gameplay. For example: the Crimson Courd dlc itself that adds high priority blight resistant enemies to all dungeons (if you happen to release them from the garden) it ends up filtering out blight strategies from "blight weak locations", because to minimize risks your team must be effective against ALL possible scenarios in a given location and that mantra must triumph over the entire gameplay. If you add too many enemies not "designed for the location" eventually all of your teams will devolve to triple Shieldbreaker + Vestal (which is not a great team, but if you consider all possible fights at once this team is the best "in average" and the average is what you seek).
It is so funny that the best strategy against the Crimson Court dlc is to simply not engage it (once it appears around week 4) until you can one-shot all main missions of all levels in a row (because once you do the enemies stop appearing in all locations, therefore correcting the bad design).

I don't know how to explain Darkest Dungeon to you. This is simply one of the best games I have ever played. It literally is it's own genre. It's unlike anything else I have seen before. And I have seen nothing else like it since then.
The atmosphere this game has is unique, you totally feel drawn in to the world even though it's mostly 2D sprites on a screen. I think the narrator plays a big part in it. Even though it's in a dark fantasy setting, being in the Hamlet gives me a unique joy and comfort and a sense of "being home". This is the closest I have felt this way since being in Rogue Encampment in Diablo II. And I am certain I have a lot of positive bias towards D2, which probably makes this an even bigger achievement for Darkest Dungeon.
So, let me say a few things about the gameplay. This game teaches you humility. It is not for the faint of heart. It is not for narcissists who blame others for their mistakes. It is not for people who shy away from a challenge, nor for people who avoid responsibility. This game punishes hubris, greed, and overconfidence. There is a reason the ancestor repeatedly says:
"Overconfidence is a slow but insidious killer."
Because that literally is the premise of Darkest Dungeon. It is the root cause behind the lore. It is the definition of the core gameplay loop. I have no clue how they managed to implement something so perfect, so fitting. This is literally a piece of art. If you can not appreciate this I don't think we could see eye to eye about the depth of things in life.
It's a unique game that will always hold a special place in my life and one that I will always keep coming back to every few years because to me it will never grow old. It just ages like fine wine.
Also, if you would like to experience the true Darkest Dungeon, play on Bloodmoon. If you can still keep your wits about you, then you are a true challenger of life to behold.

It would be 1 thing I could take that L, whole party died, cool it happens, rebound. But then the rest of the dungeons keep on getting harder and harder so eventually if you can't keep up you literally have to delete your game and try ALL OVER BACK AT SQUARE 1. Oh it's fine the beginning is easy you can work your way back to it, NO. No I'm not doing it a fourth time, I have watched hours of videos on team building, tips and tricks and I cannot begin to care to crawl myself up from the beginning AGAIN.
Maybe I should just play on easy, no shame in that. Fair, but I am so damn tired of getting horrible heros at the cart to just throw into my slop pile of heros that all get kleptomania and steal the best treasures from the dungeons. Oh dear god can I get a crusador or a jester? NO YOU CAN HAVE AN ANTIQUARIAN AND SMALL ORPHAN CHILD THAT CAN SET THINGS ON FIRE SUCK ♥♥♥♥ AND DELETE YOUR SAVED GAME AGAIN BECAUSE YOU JUST GOT, "THE TOWNS ABUZZ" FOR THE 6TH WEEK IN A ROW. I can't, I've played through every Souls like game, I can figure things out and work around them, but this game isn't worth learning nor is the story captivating enough to drag me out of retirement to try again.
If you're literally on the fence on buying this game, do it when it's on sale, but it's not worth the hell that is repeatedly failing, just to crawl through the same boring turn based dungeons again and again just to get some BS RNG and it's like well...maybe just delete your save and try again on easy NO.
I'll literally play some random JRPG where the plot is, "uhh we have amnesia and secretly are all related" something stupid like that then go through Darkest Dungeon FOR A 4TH SAVED GAME where it's just like, "oops your front line man missed their attack and now your healer is insane WHICH MAKES EVERYONE ELSE GO INSANE AND NOW YOUR BEST TEAM MEMBERS CANT GO OUT BECAUSE THEY NEED TO GAIN SANITY BUT OH GEE LOOK "TOWN'S ABUZZ" WHICH MEANS ALL SANITY HEALING ISN'T HAS STRONG AS IT SHOULD BE ♥♥♥♥ YOU HERE'S NEW HEROS TO RECRUIT, ANOTHER GIRL WITH A HALBIERD WITH LESS ACCURACY THAN A BLIND PERSON, A WITCH DOCTOR, AND AN ANTIQUARIAN OMG ♥♥♥♥ IT JUST DELETE YOUR SAVE AND TRY AGAIN!!!!!"

The pacing felt slow and things started feeling repetitive. I quit with a team doing champ dungeons. I think this game has a problem where experimentation is punished, but you need lots of game knowledge to play optimally and the game is very deep, so I would find myself looking up the wiki page for a boss so I better understood how to make a team to beat them, because doing an entire expedition just to realize my team wasn't capable of beating the boss is just too tedious.
