However my big takeaway is I felt it had a lot of potential to be a good game, and I'm happy to share that Demon Tides is able to realize that potential.

The developers have described the game as an "expressive platformer", giving a large toolset in order to traverse levels however the player sees fit. There's a really huge emphasis on freedom in this game which I really appreciated.
Each region has a different boss that's slowly built up to as they banter back and forth with the main character similar to Demon Turf, which was certainly a highlight of both games. It really got me pumped up for these showdowns and the music was well worth it, even if not every fight was super memorable.

If you liked "hat in time" or "bowsers fury" then you cant go wrong with this.
I honestly think the creator must have really liked bowsers fury and wanted more since thats a short game.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tFun platformer, had a great time just exploring from island to island, very reminiscent of Wind Waker for that sort of mechanic, mixed with Hat in Time style platforming. Most of the mechanics work and feel fluid in this game. Opticas, special power ups that are used in some challenges, felt fun and easy to use and the temporary checkpoint from Demon Turf returns but isn't as necessary or limited. Also, there are upgrades in the form of Talismans that add/modify your abilities, but they are not required to do most challenges (unless the final optional level does not require them but it didn't feel it, but it makes sense as it is the final level for 100%)
However, that doesn't mean this game is perfect. Some of the mechanics, whilst fluid on the most part, do have some issues here and there. Whilst there is a wall running mechanic that works on the most part, here and there it can be quite clunky (for example, the final level after getting all of the Golden Gears, moving from a curved to a flat surface was not intuitive here at all and rarely worked leading to frustration). The Opticas, whilst fun, were limited to challenge islands (though you do get an upgrade to be able to use them permanently if you so wish) and more challenges of these mechanics would have been appreciated. Finally, I LOVE Lucy but hearing "I'm DYING to see this on you" on loop when buying multiple items from her at once is grating. That's minor though.

Along with a sleek cell-shaded aesthetic, a fun island-dotted ocean as a setting, and banging OST, Demon Tides was slated to be a homerun for me. Unfortunately, the middling level design mixed with some rough edges with certain mechanics made me happy to put down the controller when my time with this game was done. Overall i think this is an excellent 3d platformer, it controls even better than the legendary jump man himself in my opinion, but it misses the mark just a bit in terms of level design (atleast for me anyways). this game uses the Mario Galaxy style of "Floating Level Design" as apposed to Sunshine's or Odyssey's more multi faceted environmental/world level design that i prefer, coupled with the fact that levels are a bit longer and have scattered collectibles. so it feels a bit more like an awkward middle ground between a quick one off obstacle course and an indepth "world" you get to explore and play in. this is more of a personal gripe than a true complaint (and there are a few levels that gave you more space to play in), but its something i felt the whole time playing it. this complaint of mine is relevant however to probably the only real issue with the game; the "open world" in this game is really bad. it's like wind waker but somehow much less satisfying and less whimsical. i dont really think having an empty open ocean adds anything to the game, it just pads out play time and makes some smaller levels easy to miss (i was stuck for a bit right before 100% because i just somehow missed some tiny little islands).
my only other real complaint is that the writing is a little all over the place, the story tries to be both happy go lucky, but also dark sometimes and it can give you whiplash when it switches between them. also the characters largely dont swear but one character swears like a sailor, which i dont mind personally, but again whiplash. overall i do think the story is fine and is just more from the previous game. one small nitpick i'll add is that there is very minimal character voices, but they are there which just makes the overall silence from dialog a little extra deafening because you'll go for a few minutes of just silent text, just a few more voice lines for the dialog would have helped alot.
