It makes it feel bad to commit early...but it also feels bad to struggle with a bad build because I'm saving up just in case I find a shell I enjoy more... Probably my only complaint. Update 1 introduced a way to upgrade all shells in one playthrough.

A Step Closer to the FromSoftware Standard

I never played the first Mortal Shell, but after seeing the trailers and hearing the rumors that Mortal Shell 2 and the new Lords of the Fallen would be a big step up for the genre, I decided to give this a try.

I really enjoyed the beta. For a while, I genuinely saw the potential for a Soulslike that could stand somewhere around Lies of P outside of FromSoftware's own games. I liked it enough that I even pre-ordered the special edition to support the developers.

After 23 hours, I've seen almost everything, with only some Ova and side quests remaining.

I played Tiel for roughly the first half and switched to an Eredrim Frost build for the rest. The Shells definitely aren't perfectly balanced, as some of them feel considerably stronger than others, but I really like how differently each Shell plays.

The Second Life mechanic is also a clever idea. When your Shell's health reaches zero, you get thrown out and continue fighting in your normal form. If you manage to land enough hits, you can recover the Shell and jump back into it at full strength. It creates some really satisfying second-chance moments.

Combat in general feels noticeably faster than in many other Soulslikes. You can heal while sprinting, and finishers build up relatively quickly, which helps the whole combat system feel much more fluid.

Technical Side

I play on high-end hardware with a 77-inch LG G6 OLED, not to flex, but simply to give you some context on why the visual features I mention below matter more to me. I’ve also used the advanced options to disable many filters that normally can’t be turned off in-game, while enabling extra graphical settings such as 4K shadows.

Chromatic aberration, lens flare, depth of field and film grain have caused me problems before, including severe burn-in on my previous TV.

Thankfully, Mortal Shell 2 lets you disable all of these effects. In 2026, I honestly think developers shouldn't have an excuse for not providing these basic options, just like proper controller button prompts.

Mortal Shell 2 gets this right and runs extremely well. I played with DLSS set to a DLAA-like quality without needing Frame Generation at all. Interestingly, Frame Generation was actually causing Unreal Engine crashes when I last tested it.

The Bugs

Unfortunately, bugs are probably the game's biggest weakness right now.

Early on, I experienced Unreal Engine crashes related to Frame Generation. After fixing that, I still encountered plenty of strange physics and level bugs.

Several times, my character was launched into the air or fell through the level and died.

This also means losing your Gloom, which can sometimes spawn in completely inaccessible places after falling deaths.

There are also interaction bugs. If you quickly combine inputs such as opening a chest and attacking, the interaction system can sometimes completely lock up. At that point, you can't gather plants, open doors or interact with anything because the interaction HUD disappears entirely.

I also had three achievements bug out. These were achievements I had earned without problems during the beta, but they didn't unlock properly in the full game. I only noticed near the end and had to get them again in New Game+.

Hopefully, most of these issues will be fixed, as they're the game's biggest technical problem.

Crafting, Shells & Progression

The gathering and crafting system is actually pretty interesting. Certain plants can be collected a limited number of times before you discover their more advanced properties.

Items can be placed in either an active or passive slot, and the same item can behave differently depending on where you equip it. For example, a fire-resistance item might provide a large amount of protection for a short period when used actively, while its passive version provides weaker but permanent resistance.

Shell progression is another part I really enjoyed

Every Shell has its own story, abilities and upgrades. Glimpses can either be spent to make finding Shells easier or used to increase your familiarity with them.

Increasing your bond unlocks higher skill-tree tiers, reveals more of its identity and eventually all of its memories. I especially liked the way characters in Marrow Keep react differently depending on which Shell you're wearing.

Eredrim is treated with respect because of his knightly appearance, Proxima makes NPCs more cautious because of her aggressive nature, while Tiel's cultist background causes a completely different reaction.

It's a small detail, but it gives the world more personality and makes the Shell system feel more meaningful.

Shell points work like traditional skill-tree points and can be refunded freely, which is another great decision. It encourages experimentation instead of forcing you to commit permanently to one build.

Weapons & Builds

Weapon variety is probably just enough to get the job done.

There aren't many weapons, but Seals and Tar Stones can make them much more interesting.

For example, the Axe-Dagger becomes surprisingly effective when paired with a Tar Stone that turns light attacks into double hits.

My favorite was the Great Martyr's Blade. At first it felt pretty weak, but once I combined it with Eredrim's increased damage against frozen enemies, his natural tankiness, a Tar Stone that permanently applies Frost infusion and Warp stacks that increase attack speed over time, it became extremely powerful.

Sidearms work in a similar way and their usefulness changes depending on your setup, but personally I mostly saw them as tools for solving puzzles or dealing with explosive enemies rather than something I wanted to build around.

World Design & Content

The outdoor areas and art direction are excellent. There are clear influences from other games, but they're used effectively rather than copied.

Compared to the first game, Mortal Shell 2 feels like a huge step forward, and Cold Symmetry seems to be heading in the right direction.

The biggest content-related problems for me are enemy variety, the limited weapon selection, Shell balance and dungeon repetition.

The Beacon dungeons and regular dungeons can start feeling very repetitive after a while. They might be interesting at first, but there are at least 46 of these locations, and trying to clear every single one eventually becomes a chore. Later areas also feel like they received less attention compared to the stronger parts of the game.

And then there's the final boss.

Honestly, I think it's one of the weakest final bosses I've experienced in a Soulslike. The design, presentation and actual fight all feel disappointing compared to some of the bosses you encounter earlier in the game.

Final Thoughts

Despite having pretty high expectations after the beta, Mortal Shell 2 is definitely a good game it just isn't quite at that level yet.

Cold Symmetry has clearly learned a lot from the first game. If a third Mortal Shell continues this progression and the developers become even more ambitious, I genuinely think they could eventually reach something close to FromSoftware's level.

For reference, I would personally give Lies of P around 90 and Wuchang around 75.

- Animation quality gets worse the further you get, this also means that many attacks are poorly telegraphed in this parry focused game, which is never a fun combination
- Enemy moves get more buggy the further you get. Some hit you when they shouldn't hit you, some don't hit you when they should hit you because hitboxes are wonky (which lets you miss parrys and can put you in a disadvantageous state)
- Balancing is all over the place. Weapons are unbalanced among each other, most accessories/tarstones are absolutely useless, some enemy attacks tickle you, some kill you in one hit
- Later Bosses aren't challenging in a fun way, animations are bad and they often downright one or two hit you with every hit of a long combo
- Enemy variety is abysmal, you've seen about 70% of enemies after finishing the first 30% of the game
- There are many bugs, like clipping through the ground after jumping, losing control over your camera, losing control of your character after entering a fight, randomly dealing damage as big as 65% of a bosses health, skipping an entire bossfight, special attacks getting stuck in the ground and many more.

It feels like the devs were intentionally misleading people by showing us an extremely polished early game and demo while not putting the same amount of care and polish into the later parts of the game.

I can understand the pressure to release the game this early because of this year being filled with a lot of anticipated titles, but this doesn't justify releasing it in an unfinished state.\t\t\t\t\t

Let me start with the good stuff, because there is good stuff. Tons of weapons, lots of build variety, combat feels legitimately satisfying. The shell powers are creative and the combat has actual weight to it, this was my favorite part. Environments are beautiful, story is fine. If you like Sekiro or Wukong, you'll find stuff to enjoy here.

But HOLYYYY, the second half is a slog.

Soundtrack and enemy variety is non-existent. You've seen everything by the midway point, after that it's just the same ones with inflated HP and damage so overtuned they'll one-shot you or stunlock you into frustration. And the late game areas are 90% filled with the most annoying enemy in the game, with maybe two others thrown in. Why? The first half was working fine. Who thought this was a good idea?

There's legit no challenge to bosses, normal enemies hit way harder and in most cases have way more movesets.

The sound queue for unblockable attacks is straight up broken, feeling cheap, some enemies spam the same unblockable combo over and over, and you get that same audio cue stacking on itself ten times in a row. How did playtesting miss this, did NO ONE get annoyed and dared to give some feedback?

There's also tons of bugs that: killed me while inside my shell, got launched into the sky and had to restart, bosses canceling moves mid-animation to hit me with something else out of nowhere.

I don't hate it though, I actually enjoyed a lot of it. But the late-game design feels rushed, and most of these issues seem fixable. If they patch it up, this could be a genuinely good game, imo, it should've stayed a bit more in the oven.\t\t\t\t\t

Small issues that restrict this from being great

After about 27 hours, I have finished the game and completed 100% of the map. Overall, the experience was fun, and Cold Symmetry have done an amazing job improving the formula from Mortal Shell 1. I was able to complete all of the game pre-patch except the final boss. I completed most of the game using Tiel, Eredrim and Proxima and would have liked to experience more of the shells, but I'll go into that during the bad section of my review.

For anyone interested in the difficulty, there are three (unofficial) difficulties to the game:
  • Easy - Take the slayer seal when you get to the hub area and you will deal more damage/heal in combat when killing enemies. Although this will disable achievements.
  • Normal - base dificulty when you launch the game normally.
  • Hard - night mode which you can unlock about 2 minutes after unlocking the open world area. The enemies are more numerous, deal more damage and take more to kill. There is some unique stuff to this like extra bosses/items/areas and such, but overall I found it to just be more grindy for little reward.
On a normal playthrough, the game is most difficult at the beginning and end. I would recommend (if you can actually do it) not using the slayer seal as the game is pretty easy for the middle 70%. Just getting there while waiting to upgrade your healing item and getting your build in order can be the main hurdle to the game, but if you can finish the first dungeon without it, you can beat the whole game.

The Good
  • The world design - This game looks great. I have a pretty good system and was able to run it at max settings at 3440 x 1440, and the world that the devs have made is expansive and beautiful. This is one of the major parts that I really wasn't expecting coming into this. I played MS1 when it first launched and the scale between that and this game is a real achievement from the devs with their small team.
  • The shells - I mainly used the three shells listed above, but I was able to play around at the first couple of levels for all shells and they all feel very unique and fun with their strengths. These are definately the main draw to the game and it shows.
  • The combat - the overall flow and rhythem of combat feels pretty good when the game is at its best. The movesets on all the weapons are very fun to use, especially when upgraded with all the different tarstones.

The Bad
  • Enemy balance - the balance is all over the place. The open world is more deadly than 90% of the bosses in the game. You can absolutely destroy some bosses in seconds, while some basic enemies take longer to kill and can kill you in two shots. Only like two of the dungeon bosses and the final dungeon area are the only real challenge in the game. Also, the magnetism of attacks when locked on is way too much. Some enemies travel half way across the map to hit you or move in mid air to hit you. Not using the lock on is the only way to mitigate this which is crazy.
  • Bad combat parts - The combat really isn't bad as it normally feels great but there are just small things with it that make it just feel wrong. like what is the design philosophy around finishers? They are cool the first couple of hours but they are actively bad to use. They take like 5 seconds each to do, they give no resolve and they often do less damage than just heavy attacking the enemy. The game is also clearly designed and balanced around the block seal. You are disadvantaging yourself if you're using the other two seals, especially the parry seal. This seal needs to be reworked, as it locks you into its full animation even when successfully parrying. This would be fine if the enemies were stunned by it and if they didn't always do multi-hit attack patterns, but they do. When you parry, you'll just be hit by the followup attack that they do, which is really bad in a game where you are only every 1 or 2 hits from death.
  • Dumb restrictions - Why is every single thing in this game so damn restricted. Why do i need to reset skills points every time I want to use another shell? Why are they shared and not shell specific? Why are there less glimpses in the map than it takes to fully upgrade all your shells? The shells are the only thing unique to this game, so why are you actively restricting the best part of it? Why are there less tarstone upgrade materials than it takes to fully max out all of them? Why doens't merrick sell infinite upgrade materials? Like, I don't want to constantly farm and reset my weapons every time I want to swap them.

Although i've said alot of bad about the game I still really enjoyed my playthrough. The above is mostly just small stuff that can be patched and can be fixed. Overall Cold Symmetry have done an excellent job and the team should be real proud of themselves for what they have been able to acomplish. I think that this is the new bar for quality of a souls like and is up there as one of the best.

I would recommend probably in a couple months time. Just give them some more time to cook and fix some of the issues.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI have loved the game a lot but it has some severe issues with difficulty scaling. It randomly ramps at points and there are areas with just unfun/unfair enemy mob density. Having 6 spiders jumping you or webbing you in a area is just to piss people off. The last area feels like it should of been released in a later patch after being allowed to cook more. Feels like they rushed the entire last area and just made it ♥♥♥♥♥♥ buggy mess. Only one of the bosses in that area has felt satisfying to fight in any way. AI in the game is sporadic on being dumb as a brick or being so aggressive you cant manage anything besides parrying or dodging. I will update this as things go in the future.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI've waited to finish the game before writing this review so I could give a proper opinion about it. This is definitely not just another souls-like slop. It is actually a very high-quality experience that takes a completely different approach from the first game and I highly respect that. The environment design is beautiful and the core combat gameplay feels satisfying. I love that they completely removed the stamina bar this time around which makes the flow while fighting much better. There are also tons of weapons and build options to combine which allows for different playstyles.

HOWEVER, the game definitely has a lot of issues.

The enemy and boss design are BY FAR the most disappointing part of the whole game. After about eight hours you've basically seen every single enemy the game has to offer which is like 10 enemies. As you progress they just reuse the exact same enemies but boost their attack and health. The quality of the second area feels completely rushed and off balance. Even with maxed out stats, certain basic enemies can instantly break your shell and one shot you if you miss a single unparriable move, which makes no sense. The bosses are EASILY the most disappointing part of the game because they have very limited attack combinations and just spam unparriable moves to fake being "difficult".

The developers also rely on some really cheap tactics that just feel absolutely cringe. Having enemies spam ENDLESS combos, throw a thousand rocks at once, or repeat an unparriable combo a thousand times in a row doesn't make the game hard, it just makes it cringe and completely removes the fun. Filling up a small room with a ton of basic annoying enemies instead of designing one strong enemy instead, is cringe. Even worse, clearing a whole dungeon and defeating a tough, tanky boss feels great but walking back to the exit only to find a mysterious "ambush" of the most annoying enemies that magically spawned in a cleared area is just pure cringe.

The game also suffers from a lot of bugs that constantly force you to restart. For example dungeons will randomly glitch out forcing you to restart the game as you are locked inside, some SFX audio is missing, or music get stuck on loop until you restart the game. Glitches with animations, with your souls not spawning on the location you actually died and so on.

Despite all the flaws, it doesn't make this a bad game. It is doing its own thing, and I respect the developers for trying something different. If you are a fan of the Dark Souls series, you will definitely appreciate this game. (not comparing them though). It is absolutely worth its price and it is a solid 7/10.\t\t\t\t\t

Ok they fixed all the bad design decisions they took, but still it lacks of something, the bestiary is way too limited even if the game is rather short, i felt i was fighting the same 4 enemies type everytime
Whats the point of a NG+ if nothing is scaling (or its too subtle??) ? the game is already kinda easy but if now im overpowered what is even the point of NG+ ??

Also for a souls-like the bosses are kinda disappointing, you will have an harder time with the trashmobs ganging you up than with bosses

Overview

Mortal Shell 2 sold me when I played the DEMO, and what looked like a very promising game unfortunately turned into quite a drag. The game has a very strong start. It’s atmospheric, dark, the environments have personality, the gore is there, and most importantly, the combat immediately pulls you in. Combined with the Shell abilities, everything clicks together really well. Unfortunately, as you progress, the game starts relying more and more on forced multi enemy encounters and reused enemies with higher health and damage. Towards the end, combat started feeling less about learning enemy patterns or improving your playstyle and more about dealing with overwhelming groups that can easily one shot you. This took away a lot of the fun I had earlier in the game. The atmosphere also starts to lose its appeal, especially in the final area, which felt like a complete drag. I pushed through it for the sake of finishing the game, but I had basically zero fun there.

Combat

The combat is fun and has good weight to it. The different Shells can completely change how you approach the game, which I really liked. Some older reviews complained about Shell upgrades being limited by resources, but a recent patch has fixed this, so you can now experiment with and upgrade different Shells. I don’t have many complaints about the combat itself, and some of the issues mentioned in older reviews have likely been addressed, so definitely check out the recent patch.

Bosses / Enemy Variety

Bosses are one of the main appeals of Souls like games, and this is probably the weakest part of Mortal Shell 2. Many bosses feel gimmicky and lack personality, with only a few really standing out. Some later fights, like Zmey, Monolith, and Hexapod, felt more poorly designed than genuinely challenging. Enemy variety is also lacking, as you’re mostly fighting the same enemies with reskins, more health, and more damage. There are a few exceptions, but overall, the game relies too much on reusing enemies.

Atmosphere / Graphics

Mortal Shell 2 is easily one of the better looking Souls like games. The visuals combined with the atmosphere make some of the early and mid game areas genuinely enjoyable, but there’s a noticeable decline as you progress. The later areas feel less interesting and more rushed, and unfortunately, the game falls flat visually and atmospherically towards the end.

Conclusion

Mortal Shell 2 had a lot of potential and a fantastic start, but unfortunately it doesn’t maintain that quality throughout. The combat and Shell system are great, and the atmosphere can be fantastic, but repetitive enemies, weak boss design, and disappointing later areas really hold it back.

I still recommend the game though. I had fun with it in general excluding some late areas, and some of the issues mentioned in older reviews, particularly around save checkpoints and resources have been fixed.

I enjoyed the beta and have been waiting for the full game. I'd say this game is pretty good. The difference between it and its prequel is like night and day. They went from making a mediocre and short Soulslike to perhaps one of the best non-FromSoftware Soulslikes out there.

It's not flawless, and the game still has some shortcomings, especially in its progression system and soundtrack. But the improvements to the combat system, more diverse Shells, and large, open world make it worth playing. Even if you didn't like or haven't played the first game, this one is definitely worth giving a chance.

Updated my review now that I've experienced most of the content, and I must say, it's quite disappointing to see how many questionable design decisions this game has. The game starts off strong, but as you progress, you start to notice just how many stupid design decisions there are.

UPDATE: The leveling and weapon upgrade systems have been balanced, so the first point can safely be disregarded.

Again, the progression system. The leveling and weapon upgrade systems are so garbage that I question whether they were even playtested. Some level upgrades cost tens of thousands and yet give you absolutely nothing, like a mere 1% increase in crit damage. Maxing out a weapon costs so much, and the cost to respec/refund the materials is paid in the same currency you used to level up (Gloom). At max weapon levels, this costs so much that you'd be spending hours farming Gloom just to waste it on refunds.

Damage scaling is another issue. Riposte doesn't scale with your level or weapon. How is it even possible that you only deal sub-200 damage at level 40 with a maxed-out weapon? Some Tarstones also provide small fixed modifiers instead of percentages, so they don't scale with the weapon's damage. The Tarstones that increase coin yield also provide incredibly small modifiers (2/4/6%).

Although the game is still solid, and I enjoyed it without any issues until the final area, that's where things start to fall apart. You can get killed in one or two hits by mobs even at Level 40+, and the bosses are massive HP sponges. The balancing is all over the place, and I hope the devs fix these issues.\t\t\t\t\t

+ Visual style: Grotesque, a bit gothic, dark

+ first person horror sequence: now this is revolutionary this left me astounded

Downsides:
- Balance: there are 2 identical knights in a room, one with halberd and one with two-handed sword. Two-handed one deals damage equal to 15% of my hp per hit, the halberd one oneshots me. The exact same knight.
- Soundtrack: I was pleasantly surprised hearing Paradise Lost in trailer and thought to myself that maybe we'll receive a banger metal soundtrack in a souls like game. FORGET ABOUT IT. The "metal" in this game is A SINGLE ONE melody repeating on EVERY boss and consisting of what it feals like 3 notes. Yikes. I dont remember any part of the soundtrack from this game.
- Enemy variety: in the beta you will see 70% of all the enemies in the game yet you will explore only 5% of the map. See the problem in this? The whole game is basically fighting the same enemies over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
- Combat: enemies MAGNETIZE to you so hard, that it straight up feels like teleporting, spinning around their own axis and still hitting you when you dodged right behind them in the last moment. Some enemies can hit you even after you ran 10+ meters past them
- Split-second grabs: some enemies including bosses will use grab attacks and you almost always have less than a second to react. Why?
- Bosses: most of them are forgettable thash that gets to be reused in the open world and story bosses are boring and very easy.
- Level design: locations feel bleak, empty and samey - I noticed only 2-3 really noticable and unique environments that are not just "lets pick this 1-2 colors and paint everythin with it"
- HUGE amount of boring copypasted dungeons that give no valuable loot or interesting encounters
- Sadistic enemy and level design: quite often the hardest encounters on the level are put right before the checkpoint just to frustrate you or kill you. And its not that the encounter is mechanically or strategically hard - almost always its just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemy with oneshots, split second attack animation and monstrous magnetization
- Checkpoints - beta version gives you an impression that you can progress very reliably because checkpoints generously placed around the map. ANOTHER FALSE IMPRESSION FROM BETA - you will barely find any throughout the rest of the game and will be very frustrated because, chances are, you will be losing all your resources half way to the next checkpoint. And remember, many enemies can oneshot you or chainlock you.
- Tarstone system: while leveling them is a good alternative to collecting the same rings but upgraded, the very process of leveling is tediously long and repulsive. You basically need to fight enemies over and over in order to gain XP for tarstone. And yet fighting enemies is the most boring, unrewarding and frustrating part of the game
- Runbacks: Elden Ring and Wuchang both had a system of preventing runbacks by letting you respawn at the boss entrance or replay the fight right away. And Mortal Shell 2 decides to completely ignore this genre evolution and instead recteate an experience of ranbacks from games released 15 year ago and even worsened by designing enemies to magnetize and catch you while you're running to the boss. 10 out of 10 design

This game honestly feels like developers looked at downsides of Elden Ring and not only decided to put every single one in their own game, but make even more of downsides! And here I thought people should learn from others mistakes, not mindlessly repeat them in a hope to appear like a game that many people like

The combat is satisfying, the graphics are beautiful, the world is great to explore, and I love the story, weapon feel, and overall atmosphere. New Game+ is also a great addition, and the bosses provide some legitimately challenging fights.

There’s even a difficulty beyond the standard mode that took me two whole days to figure out NIGHT MODE.

That said, there are a few mechanics that absolutely drive me nuts and hold the game back from being even better.

-Shell system: Why do shells have to take points away from one shell just to reinput them into another? It feels unnecessarily tedious and makes the system more frustrating than it needs to be. Just give points to all the shells evenly as it levels. Shells are basically classes in this game and nobody wants to redo the tree over and over for certain situation because they want one shell for a fight over the other.

-Tarstone upgrade system: This one really bothers me. Why can only 24 out of 75 stones be upgraded to max while the rest are stuck at level 2? If I want to fully upgrade specific Tarstones, I'm essentially forced to replay the game and go through a massive grind. The whole system feels like a step backward. You end up maxing stones just to get the materials needed to max other stones, and eventually it stops being fun and starts feeling like a chore. All stones should be capable of being fully upgraded. Let players experiment with different builds instead of locking them behind an arbitrary limitation.

- Elemental Infusion and skills, Skills I can understand some of them are weapon specific but elemental infusion are restricted to certain weapons why?! This is such a wierd choice

- Why are my Genessa clone skills attacking background items and not enemies!? WTF I love this awesome shell but they attack barrels and other things first, pathing is horrible

- Camera issues: The camera can be absolutely horrendous, especially in corners and tight corridors. There were multiple times where I was fighting groups of enemies, the camera went completely haywire, and I ended up dying because I couldn't properly see what was happening. This is probably my biggest gameplay frustration.

Despite all of that and some of the most backward step back on basic mechanic that could had been fun had it not been restricted (See top), I really like this game. The combat, bosses, visuals, world, weapons, story, and overall feel are all fantastic. There’s a lot here to love, and when the game is firing on all cylinders, it's a great experience.
I just hope the developers take another look at some of these systems. Fix the camera, rethink the Tarstone upgrade limitations, and streamline some of the progression mechanics, and this could go from a really good game to an amazing one.

Definitely worth playing just be prepared to fight the camera and upgrade system at times almost as much as the actual enemies.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe first half hour is pretty boring, but once the open world starts, the game becomes genuinely addictive and gives you 5–6 almost flawless hours.

Now for why I’m giving it a negative review. The endgame feels like it was barely tested from a gameplay perspective. The last three bosses are basically a parody of modern soulslikes. Those ridiculous delayed attacks where you have to measure the exact dodge timing with a ruler are getting old. Earlier in the game, the bosses managed to be difficult without relying on this kind of design.

On top of that, almost every boss, especially the final one, has an attack that can one-shot you. At that point the fight starts feeling random: you survive until your first mistake, and neither your HP nor your armor really matters.

I also don’t know what exactly is going on with enemy difficulty or whether there is some kind of level scaling, but upgrading your character never really makes you feel stronger. Regular enemies suddenly become disproportionately strong later in the game. Compared to the awful late-game bosses, though, that’s just the cherry on top.

I don’t even have much of a problem with the bugs, and there are quite a few of them. Bugs happen. But the game design is a conscious decision.

I’m dropping the game at the final boss because his one-shot tail attack causes nothing but frustration at this point.

Cons:

-Enemy variety is terrible. You basically see around 75% of the game's mobs in the first three Gates zones. After that, the game keeps recycling the same enemies everywhere, which makes exploring new areas feel like you're just fighting copy-pasted encounters.

-The Shell system feels wasted. I'm almost finished with the game, I've maxed out two Shells, yet I've basically played only one of them. The game never gave me a real reason to experiment or switch.


-Leveling feels almost pointless. Most levels barely feel like they make your character stronger. You're mainly getting Shell Points, while enemies can still absolutely destroy you regardless of your level. There's very little feeling of meaningful character progression.

-Loot gets boring extremely fast. Once you've played for a while, opening chests or exploring stops being exciting because you already know what you're probably getting: another trinket or a few upgrade materials. There just isn't enough interesting gear to chase.

-The game became way too easy after the Day 1 patch. I'm around level 35 with a +15 weapon and I'm deleting enemies in the second major zone. Maybe Thiel is just completely broken, but combat has become so easy that I've actually lost motivation to finish the game.

-The soundtrack is incredibly repetitive. It genuinely feels like I'm listening to the same three notes for most of the game. There's very little musical identity between areas or important encounters.

-Bosses are extremely forgettable. For a Soulslike, this is probably one of my biggest complaints. Very few bosses have memorable designs, mechanics, arenas, or music. I can finish a boss and barely remember anything about it 20 minutes later.

Edit: Night mode increases monster life by x2 i think and also increases dmg(u will for sure get 1/2 shoted by every mob) - i think it is good to activate in ng+ and if you feel like you do to much dmg without it to make your game less boring.

Overall, Mortal Shell 2 has a good foundation and makes a strong first impression, but it runs out of ideas surprisingly quickly. The lack of enemy variety, weak loot, pointless-feeling progression, repetitive soundtrack and forgettable bosses make the second half feel much more like a chore than an adventure.

Have you ever had that feeling that you need to know what’s going on at any cost?!

Nope! I don’t mean the world of news. I mean the world of media, movies, music, games. You know, when you’re sleepy, or someone close to you is sick, or you’re simply too damn busy with life and work to properly keep up with something you love. And then, the moment you get the smallest bit of free time, you go back to that passion, alone, and completely lose yourself in it, exploring it, staring at it, getting absorbed in its beauty. I hadn’t felt that way about gaming for a long, long time.

Since the early access release of Witchfire, I hadn’t found a single game that could completely hook me like this. A game that could make me lose track of time and forget that I have to wake up early the next morning. A game that could make me break the promise I made to myself: “I’m going to bed at 11.” Well, It’s 4 AM right now. And I’m writing a Steam review. Why? Because Mortal Shell 2 has completely blown my 40 years old mind.

I love challenge. I love brutal challenge. Even when it feels unfair. I love when a game is so visually beautiful, strange, and unique that I can disappear from the real world for hours and dive into its lore, wander around, read, look, explore, and experience everything it has to offer. I love when a seemingly pathetic, beat up looking mini-boss absolutely destroys me so badly that, after finally killing it, I turn toward my monitor, give it the middle finger, and start swearing at it. I love when a game’s prologue is so damn long that I eventually think: “Wait… if THIS is the prologue, then we’ve got content for months! LET’S GO.”

And Mortal Shell 2 has delivered on every single one of these things I love. I finally have a game I can get completely lost inside again. A game that lets me step away from the dark realities of life for a while. And honestly? I don’t even care if the world of Mortal Shell 2 is just as dark, twisted, and grotesque. At least in this world, I know I have infinite chances to try again, do something differently, and eventually reach my goal.

I want to thank the developers for making this game. It was worth every single penny I spent on it, and I’m incredibly happy that I stuck with the series after the first game and followed it into this one. I just say: YES! YES! YES! THUMBS UP!

Sadly the games issues really started to pile up around midgame and only got worse towards the end. Despite multiple bugs, very bad balancing issues between the different shells and weaponsplus some questionable choices when it comes to QOL features (Shell points needing to be reallocated when switching shells, crazy long runbacks for some dungeons) I still had a lot of fun with this game as the things it did well are amazing. For new players i would recomand holding off on playing the game for now since a lot of issues can be fixed through patches which i hope the devs will dish out eventually.\t\t\t\t\t

Crazy step up from the first game! And that’s coming from someone who really enjoyed the first Mortal Shell in its entirety. Explore an open world with a pretty huge map. This game is filled with a ton of awesome stuff. Eight shells to find, and when upgraded they give unique abilities to take advantage of. There are many cool weapons to test out, but the Axatana was my fav. Music is killer. All the different areas are unique and immersive. And bosses are off the wall and crazy…in a good way. You never know what you’re fighting next. The finishing moves after hitting a riposte never get old and the addition of a sidearm was a great call. Overall, a fairly easy/beginner friendly souls-like in my opinion, but I’m happy there is only one overlying difficulty, with the option to make runs easier or harder. (Slayer’s Seal/Nightmode) An extremely well-crafted world, with an Elden Ring type of map to help navigate. A lot of the bosses are really cool, only a few gave me somewhat of a tough time. I had to do 2.5 playthroughs to collect enough glimpse to max out bonding with all shells, but with the newest update they’ve made it where you should be able to do everything in one run now making the 100% a lot less tedious. Well done Cold Symmetry, great game at a great price point too!

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe more time I put into Mortal Shell II, the more my opinion of it has unfortunately soured. I enjoyed the Open Beta considerably more than I expected to, and it gave me the impression that the full game had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the balance changes in the full release, combined with how the game structures its content, have made the experience increasingly exhausting the longer I play.

The biggest problem is enemy health.

The Open Beta had noticeably different balance, with enemies in the full game dealing more damage and having considerably higher health pools. Higher damage can create a more demanding experience, but the health increases are where I take issue. They make encounters longer without making them more interesting.

What's worse is that the enemy variety is heavily front-loaded. There aren't many more enemy types in the core game compared to what was available in the Open Beta. This means you're frequently fighting the same enemies in different areas, with the primary differences being how much health they have, how much damage they deal, or how many of them are thrown at you.

Essentially, it feels like there are only a few hours of genuinely new combat encounters stretched over the duration of the entire game, with the rest being repeated encounters with different scaling or combinations

If you're in an area you're underleveled or under-equipped for, enemies simply soak up more damage. If you're properly equipped, you're still fighting enemies you've already fought dozens of times. There's very little mechanical evolution to these encounters, so the increased health doesn't create additional depth. It just makes the same fights take longer.

Player Progression
Player power increases are extremely tame, which I actually like conceptually.

The game doesn't require you to grind extensively just to progress, and I appreciate that. However, this system doesn't work particularly well alongside the enemy scaling.

Leveling up often amounts to gaining one additional hit point, sometimes one extra percent of critical damage, or a single point of base damage. Weapon upgrades are similarly formulaic, increasing damage by a flat 5% per level.

Again, I don't inherently dislike incremental progression. In fact, I like the idea that the game doesn't allow your character to completely overpower everything through grinding. The problem is how enemy health is scaled around this system.

The enemy health scaling feels artificial, and it creates situations where combat feels the same but worse. You're either below an upgrade threshold and enemies take too long to kill, or you've reached the threshold and the encounter feels more reasonable. Alternatively, you're simply fighting more of the same enemies in an area.

Because combat permeates practically the entire experience, this isn't an isolated balance complaint. It affects almost everything you do in Mortal Shell II.

Bosses
The bosses are generally one of the stronger parts of the game.

They're more varied than the regular enemies, and most of them have interesting mechanics and attack patterns that are fun to learn. There are exceptions, particularly some grab attacks that can kill the player in one hit.

Those attacks can be particularly exhausting when you've spent several minutes learning an encounter only to get caught by one move and instantly die. It means you essentially have to memorize that specific attack above everything else, and the frustration is amplified when you have a runback afterward.

Still, compared to the regular enemy encounters, bosses demonstrate much more of what I think Mortal Shell II does well. They actually give you something new to learn rather than simply asking you to fight the same enemies with larger health bars.

Exploration and Dungeons
Exploration is a major focus of Mortal Shell II. When you're not fighting, you're generally looking for the next dungeon, beacon, or piece of progression.

The dungeons are one of my favorite parts of the game. They're distinct from one another and often introduce environmental gimmicks that change how you interact with the area. One might have portals that alter the state of a room, for example, allowing you to interact with the environment in completely different ways.

Most dungeons also culminate in a boss fight, which makes them feel like meaningful pieces of content rather than simply another area to traverse.

Unfortunately, the overworld doesn't fare quite as well. Enemy placement doesn't feel particularly inspired, and you'll frequently find yourself engaging with the same encounters over and over. This reinforces my biggest criticism of the game because the exploration constantly feeds you back into combat that I've already experienced numerous times.

The game's structure also means that much of the exploration revolves around collecting tools that allow you to access larger dungeons and other areas. There are plenty of secrets and hidden pieces of content, but I don't find myself particularly interested in re-exploring the world to find everything.

Build Variety
This is probably my favorite aspect of Mortal Shell II.

There are eight different shells, and each one changes the rules of how you play. One might allow you to cloak yourself and perform a critical attack, while another can charge up a powerful punch that knocks enemies down.

These aren't just stat differences. They meaningfully change how you interact with combat.

There are also eight ranged weapons and eight melee weapons, each with their own feel, along with Tar Stones that provide additional passive and active abilities.

You can create some genuinely interesting combinations. One Tar Stone can make enemies explode when they're killed by a ranged attack, while another can guarantee a critical hit after performing a certain number of attacks.

There's a lot of potential here, and experimenting with these systems is one of the reasons I continue to enjoy playing the game despite my broader frustrations.

Final Thoughts
I will be putting more time into Mortal Shell II, but I think there are enough problems with the game that I feel the need to put up a cautionary review now.

The biggest issue is enemy health bloat. It isn't something that can simply be ignored because combat is such a fundamental part of the experience. When you're repeatedly fighting the same enemies, and those enemies increasingly require more hits to kill without introducing new mechanics, the game starts to feel like it's stretching its content rather than providing more of it.

That's especially disappointing because there are things I really like here. The bosses are generally well designed, the dungeons are creative, and the build variety is excellent. The shells, weapons, and Tar Stones give you plenty of ways to experiment with how you want to play.

But the core combat loop is simply too repetitive for me to overlook the balance problems. It genuinely feels like I'm replaying the same content in motion because of how frequently the game reuses its enemy encounters.

I also can't imagine wanting to replay the game based on how its structured. The first playthrough already has me repeatedly revisiting the same enemy encounters, and the idea of going through the world again to rediscover all of the tools and secrets doesn't sound appealing.

Mortal Shell II has some genuinely great ideas and some excellent individual pieces, but I think the current enemy balance and lack of enemy variety undermine the experience significantly. I'd like to see a substantial balance pass that brings enemy health down and makes later encounters more mechanically interesting rather than simply more durable.

For now, I'd recommend approaching this one with caution. If you love exploration, build experimentation, and learning boss encounters, there's plenty here to enjoy. If you're primarily looking for consistently engaging combat, h\t\t\t\t\t
