This game developer has been working on this project for years and years with an active community, and this was a web3/cryptocurrency game. Remember NFTs in games? Yeah, this was one of those games. This game raised MILLIONS of dollars from NFT investors and backers via NFT presale and premium currency purchases.
The game recently, seemingly, moved away from all NFT/blockchain tech in the game while ALSO not refunding anybody for all the money they had spent. This was also a very recent change, within the last year of development
Now we are in a situation where the developer is being genuinely nasty, banning anybody who mentions anything about this from the Discord, and gaslighting people who do not know yet. They even created an entirely new discord because obviously that community was thoroughly burnt and angry.
So this game was built off the backer money of people who were pretty directly lied to, and who have since, been treated pretty badly by the developers, who have shown themselves to be rather unsavory people.
Does that matter to you? I don't know. But it matters to me. These are pretty scummy people (even outside of the NFT thing, they just lie, act really nasty, and accuse people of this and that. Just really crappy people imo).
They could have at least been honest and forthright. Tried to get the community's sentiment for a change of plans. But the actions they chose speak a lot about their character. Imo they chose theft, in the same way old scammers would have their business packed up and be out of town before the towns people figured out all of their money was gone.

Regardless of whether this game is fun or not, the developer has been stealing money from his backers. Backers invested millions of dollars and now the developer has done away with the NFT system that was promised, and has not refunded anyone. See other comments for more info.

Whoever thought a real-time growing system where things pop near instantly after they're planted and watered was a good idea should probably be fired. The hand-in item levelling system cheapens the player's actions—wanna grow crops to get sil?
Too bad, whatever you grow might not even be on the hand-in list. Now it's just sitting and wasting an inventory slot. There's no way to sell excess items outside of the random item request system, so if you like fishing? Too bad. It literally just rots in your inventory while you wait endlessly for that specific fish to pop up on the hand-in, if they even do.
The real time crop growth and random hand-in systems really do this game a massive disservice. Not being able to pause the game, and growing wasteful, random items just to be forced to either throw them away or wait until they pop up on the list does not a cozy game make. These things just cheapen the experience and made me quit before I even finished the long-ahh, daunting tutorial that was holding my hand through the only three things you can do in this game—go here, grab this, craft this. I'm not even counting growing or farming because you can just slap it down, go AFK for literally 30 seconds and stuff is already grown. After 3 hours, I had to rage quit since my character is stuck on a dock in the village. There's no way to unstuck or respawn without loading back into the game and restarting from your previous sleep. The having to zoom out every time you go somewhere is annoying. Alot of my knowledge for the controversary I'll summarize, because i notice alot of upset people, but NOT talking about the NFT and blockchain. Pretty sure MANY of us dont like NFT and blockchains, or has everyone changed their mind on that?
Honestly though while scummy for them to back pedal, and for those unfamiliar with the tea:
Oxalis Games (UK studio) developed Moonfrost as a cozy farming/life-sim RPG (Stardew-like vibes with pixel art, town rebuilding after meteor storms, relationships, etc.). Early on it was positioned with Web3 elements:
Funding of roughly $6.5 million across rounds, including investors like Animoca Brands, Supercell, and others.
Initial Solana association, then partnership with Open Loot.
NFTs and related assets: Frost Hunter Licenses (genesis collection), Mystery Boxes, Frost Workbenches, FROSTprints, tools, and currencies such as CRYO, Liquid Luck, and a planned $FROST token.
Some early access or features were NFT-gated or tied to Open Loot accounts/marketplaces. Whitepapers and updates described optional Web3 economies for crafting, earning, and trading.
Cozy/farming game fans (the core intended audience) pushed back hard. Many viewed NFTs and blockchain as a poor or predatory fit for a wholesome life-sim, and there were accusations of incomplete disclosure in marketing. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tso far its been nothing but fetch quests. growing crops is pointless as you can only sell for whatever the frost wants and not what you grow. wood, weeds, rocks randomly pop up in areas you cleared a day later if not 2 days. the ui navigation is horrible. steam deck resolution so far not supported. if you zoom out or in it resets every map transition. inventory maxes quick and only one chest so far. character model skips frames it seems seperately from everything else. there is no store to sell anything. only what the frost hunter association wants in your "Phone". chicken models go haywire sometimes. I'd love to be able to hit a key and go straight to my bag, grab completed items without having to open the machine menu, quickly transfer entire stacks to and from chests, click a button to move same items to existing stacks, reference storage materials when you're not physically near them, etc. There are more, but I am forgetting. Both Coral Island and Chef RPG (if I'm remembering correctly?) have really nailed user-friendly systems. Would love for the devs to get inspiration from similar titles.

Game is stunning, I love how you can see the moons reflected in the water. And overall art style is great. I love the music. Dialogues made me chuckle a few times, as I do feel as much confused about "what am I doing here" as character is. I do like loop of the game. I just decorate with crops, and harvest them as needed when orders come. I cannot wait for next roadmap goals, especially livestock.
Edited part after first patch.: Most issues that I mentioned here are gone after first patch. Which is really great. OG part: I did not experience any major bugs. On zone changes camera zooms all the way in, and it actually is most annoying bug. Dialogues made me chuckle a few times, as I do feel as much confused about "what am I doing here" as character is. I do like loop of the game. I just decorate with crops, and harvest them as needed when orders come. I cannot wait for next roadmap goals, especially livestock.

The mechanics for activities such as unlocking technology and fishing are new and interesting compared to the long list of farming sims I've enjoyed. It's nice and refreshing to feel like you're playing something new vs the overly repeated story concepts and mechanics from so many popular farming sim titles. The NPC dialog is corky but again nice to see a change in the all too repeated conversations that all games in this genre repeat. If you enjoy a good farming sim with dungeon crawling and town rehabilitation and want a fresh experience that doesn't go down the same beaten path as all the others have then you will find many hours of entertainment from this game. It's early release so yeah there are obvious quality of life issue to be addressed but in its current form not that big of a deal. To sum it up you farm, explore, rehab the town, dungeon crawl, collect materials, upgrade character and build a homestead and develop relationships. Fun!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It can feel slightly clunky at times, but those were very rare instances. I enjoy colony sims, life sims, survival games, and similar, but I LOVE farming games. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've really been enjoying Moonfrost. I’m only a couple of hours in, but to me, it has a fresh feel compared to other farming sims, and there's so much charm and attention to detail that makes the world feel lovely to explore. I’ve also not experienced any major bugs like other people have mentioned.
Pros:
Beautiful art style – The visuals are gorgeous, with a lovely aesthetic that gives the game its own identity.
Cute chickens! – Honestly, they deserve a mention of their own. Yes they sometimes spin around and go crazy but it makes me chuckle every time.
Quick-growing crops – I really like being able to see progress without having to wait ages for everything to grow.
The OST – The soundtrack adds so much to the atmosphere and makes the game a lovely place to spend time.
Attention to detail – Things like the reflections in the water and the puddles that appear after rain are such nice touches. It's clear there's a lot of care going into the world.
The building mechanic – A really enjoyable part of the game that adds to the overall experience.
A fresh take on the genre – Moonfrost has a different feel from other farming sims, which makes it feel fresh rather than just another copy of the same formula.
Cons / Room for improvement:
Selling items – It would be nice to have more options for selling items outside of the Frost Hunter Association.
Tilled soil disappearing – Once crops have been harvested, the tilled soil disappears almost immediately. It would be great if it stayed in place a little longer, making it easier to replant without having to till everything again.
Harvesting and item collection – Sometimes items seem to ping away from the character when harvesting or picking things up. It would be a nice quality of life improvement if items were automatically collected, rather than occasionally having to run around looking for things that have been missed.
Overall:
Moonfrost has a lot of charm, a distinctive feel and some lovely little details that make it stand out from other farming sims. There are a few quality of life improvements I'd love to see, but none of these take away from the enjoyment I've had so far.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI haven’t experienced any of the issues others have stated, with that said, it’s a beautiful cozy game so far and i’m excited to see it develop! my biggest complaint so far is i wish there was more character customization from the start. i’m someone who cares about that a lot and the current limited options just aren’t really cutting it, they don’t do the game justice honestly with how great the artwork is.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
