\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI first played this game around a year ago while it was in early access. The full release is now out, and along with it came a "Combat System Overhaul". I really wanted to like the game again, but I feel that a lot was lost in the change.
There are, in my opinion, three main things missing from the game:
Meaningful interaction between mechanics: There is no spells that play well into each other, no way to make them work together. The only thing that approach a synergy is that some spells can reduce the cooldown of others, which isn't much. Every spell does one thing (mostly some kind of damage) and only that thing.
Variability between run: You select your loadout before starting a run, and you know in advance which upgrades will be offered. There is a good variety of loadouts, but no variety in how a given loadout will play out. The only thing that changes is the order in which you get the upgrades, and which relics with pretty forgettable effects you get offered. And even that can get mitigated given the limited pool and the amount of rerolls the game gives you.
Potential of different spells and playstyles: Given the previous two points, it is now possible to develop a pretty conclusive idea of which spells are the best ones and pick them every time. You might or might not care about regularly using other loadouts to diversify your runs and get a full experience of the game, but if you do it is with the full awareness that you are going out of your way to play sub-optimally. Otherwise, you just ignore ~80% of the game's overhauled combat system.
The result of all this is a game devoid of almost any decision-making. Its gameplay relies only on the moment-to-moment aspects to be interesting, and while those are good they are not particularly ground-breaking for the genre either.
The more I think about it, the more I miss the old system I had fun playing with and what it could have been. But regardless of my feelings on the matter, I still couldn't recommend the game as it stands right now.

Each run is almost exactly the same, with some build variety to pick from before starting the run. But in the run, most of the upgrades are of the boring "improve this stat slightly" variety. With some milestone upgrades providing more interesting changes (still not enough to be interesting). The game needs more enemy and room variety to make each run distinct, along with more interesting upgrades and choices.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

One major downside. There isn't any replay value and all the runs feel exactly the same. Every game gives you the same upgrades for your abilities with the same 3 capstone upgrades that don't change. The only changes are the random relics that you get, but the relic pool is so small that you can complete a build every game. All of the relics also only increase % damage or % cooldown so none really feel like they change what you do, only increase damage numbers.
Another downside is the spell balance. I ended up using the same 2 spells, spin slash and fireball for the whole game because they were super high damage and I could burst down every enemy and boss before they could do any damage. I tried using a few others but the damage output was so low that I had to switch back. There is no incentive to try anything new.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCutest roguelike i've seen in a good while, super clean. The way my jaw dropped when i realized it was all voice-acted. It's story-focused very similar to Hades, i'm finding it to be very well-balanced overall, most weapons/powers seem viable and exciting.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tTo preface this, I have been playing since early beta, so I have seen this game through many different iterations throughout its development lifecycle. After 100%'ing the game (all achievements and completing the maxxed out difficulty challenge runs) I think this game is worth playing but it is not perfect.
I will focus this review purely on a gameplay perspective. As others have mentioned in other reviews, I do think spells should interact with each other rather than being in their own lane and isolated. Attaching threads to enemies used to be its own Spell, and it interacted with Slash by allowing slash to "cut" the threads dealing additional damage based on the amount of threads attached to them. Now this interaction is far weaker and limited to a relic. I do think the gameplay falls short here, part of the longevity of rouguelites/likes is the creativity in builds and the lack of interaction between spells limits us too much.
Others have argued that only 2 or maybe 3 spells are worth taking and the rest do not perform. I think this comes from people simply not giving other spells a real try or not knowing how to build the others into damage nukes. The only spells I think are risky to use in the endgame content would be Butterfly Walk and Blood Marble. Blood Marble simply lacks damage and the additional movement speed from Butterfly Walk can get you killed quite easily so you do need to play more carefully with it. All other spells can clear the hardest content just fine.
Overall the game needs more loadout customization and variation in runs, more options per scissor and per spell, interactions between all of them, more relics, relics that debuff you but also buff you to compensate, enemies from all regions should be able to appear in any floor for harder difficulties, use actual bosses as mini bosses for extra rewards, add a constant poison through an entire run, give us the ability to become very OP if lucky enough or if we push through tough enough challenges, etc.
One final note, the base game can easily be steamrolled if you had played before and know what build to use, I ran through the story again to get the bugged Singing Scissor Achievement and took out most bosses far quicker than expect, especially compared to how they were in the beta versions. I think the HP pools may need to be increased.

As others have mentioned in other reviews, I do think spells should interact with each other rather than being in their own lane and isolated. Attaching threads to enemies used to be its own Spell, and it interacted with Slash by allowing slash to "cut" the threads dealing additional damage based on the amount of threads attached to them. Now this interaction is far weaker and limited to a relic. I do think the gameplay falls short here, part of the longevity of rouguelites/likes is the creativity in builds and the lack of interaction between spells limits us too much.
Others have argued that only 2 or maybe 3 spells are worth taking and the rest do not perform. I think this comes from people simply not giving other spells a real try or not knowing how to build the others into damage nukes. The only spells I think are risky to use in the endgame content would be Butterfly Walk and Blood Marble. Before this game had super in-depth synergy spell combo system, making choosing the right spells at the right time when you needed them super satisfying. This 'Overhaul" they did is more of a Stain on the earth, Underhaul more like it. Actually just nerfed everything (DMG, Boss HP, Synergy) while changing one of the best most fun spell in the game where you would fan out needles and tied thread to enemies, GONE are we serious? Who asked for this?
I understand making games more accessible for people who suck ass and and have no brain in there skull, but you were literally given a tutorial on how to build craft for EVERY SPELL! IN GAME! they were Challenges where you unlocked more items to help you on your run like the Hades 2 Tarot cards. Some times the Chef needs to step out of the kitchen this game is overcooked. burnt it.
If you weren't an EA player pre 0.9.2, you missed out, you got a watered down ver. of one of the most gas games ever, I'm sorry. I waited for 1.0 to pick up the game again. I didn't know the havoc and destruction it suffered. Unlucky.

But the core gameplay is very satisfying and build variety is nice, you can have a "stick to the target and parry it to death" or "focus on dodging while lobbing projectiles".
Later the game introduces new modes to spices things up and it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

i love the story and how it progress into something even more. the characters are adorably CUTEEE. there were never any stale moments for me since everyone is fun to know and when i heard we got the main chapters fully voiced i was so happy it was PERFECT!!!. the Gameplay is great and the mechanics are all fairly solid they even refine some of the builds which really made the game more fun i have no complaints... the soundtrack is a masterpiece there is no doubt about it the fights really show how good it really was and the Artstyle is obviously great they can never make it more CUTER!!! but Overall im really glad how things improved and turn out... really hope we see more of SIL and the cast or maybe another story to be told. this was such an amazing game and i hope more good things to come

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a somewhat tricky game to review, because I genuinely can't think of any other game that more deserves the "I love it, I wish there was more" rating, except it's also frustrating for that reason.
It's a great rouge-like with combat similar to Cult of the Lamb/Hades, but what makes it annoying is that it isn't "a rouge-like game", it's "a game with rouge-like elements". This isn't really a game you'll sink tens of hours into because the rouge-like elements are just a way to shuffle around the first few half of a run, as based on whatever starting weapon/spells you chose, the last half of the run will always end up the same way as every other run with that setup.
Beating a run means progressing to a new chapter of the story, and the story's only a few chapters long, meaning it doesn't take much time to finish it. The epilogue chapters do heavily remix the gameplay, EP1 turning it into a time-based arena-battler, and EP2 making it a dungeon crawler, but still, the core gameplay is still the same and it doesn't take long to finish them.
Ultimately, it isn't exactly "wrong" for the devs to make a standard "A to B" game/story, and use rouge-like elements to make the path less literally linear, but given it so heavily brings to mind other great rouge-likes like Hades, it's still frustrating as I'd love to see this game have a more traditional "tens of hours worthy" gameplay. It reminds me a fair amount about Inscryption, with how it has an excellent rouge-like core, but with that game runs weren't really meant to be replayed until Kasey's Mod released. But in fairness, not every game needs to be that kind of endlessly repeatable thing. I do wish there was a tad bit more, like a Kasey's mod of its own.

Short and sweet. The main story is especially cute and full of lovable cast, brought to life by good voice acting, which is why the latter half is a bit worse for the lack of voiced dialogue. It's decent overall.
Gameplay
I enjoyed it very much. Enemy moveset design is beyond what I expected from the first game of a small team. Good challenge, tricky, but not unfair. I'm also glad to see that visual clarity hadn't been thrown out of the window at some point in the game. And I appreciate that "roll iframe" is not like the average panic button, this rewards learning the enemies more than being reactive.
Concerns
Maybe a balance oversight. While this game has an ok build variety, some skills are obviously TOO (not SO) much worse than its peers. There are obvious winners, yes, but this issue is more about viability than a race to be the best thing and there are some that just aren't viable no matter how much you pour into it. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI almost didn't buy it because it looked pretty generic, but wow... what a great game! It offers a lot more than one would think from the trailers and screenshots. If you like the cute characters and don't mind reading through the dialogues, then it's definitely a great experience.
It's more on the casual side of roguelites, all the achievements are obtainable with relative ease, and I really like that. The game is simply well made and does not try to overstay its welcome.
Some of the bosses blew my mind. The visuals and sound effects painted such a powerful picture, and every run introduced a new set of surprises. You were never bored, and always wanted to see what would happen next.

I enjoy the characters and the progression system with the chapter, but it feels a bit to linear and maybe a bit to short to get through a chapter. Runs also dont differ that much from another in the different runs. Just enemy pattern and spawns.
