Rust isn't a game you "play" for an hour after work. It's a second job. If you actually want to compete, expect to put in 1,000+ hours just to understand the basics, and several thousand before you're consistently winning fights against experienced players. Every mistake is punished, and every lesson is learned the hard way.
The gunplay, building, monument runs, and raids create some of the most intense moments you'll find in any survival game. Winning a fight when you're outnumbered or successfully defending your base after hours of farming is incredibly satisfying because nothing is handed to you.
That said, Rust has a serious cheating problem. Depending on the server, you'll eventually run into players using ESP, aim cheats, or other hacks. It can completely ruin the experience when you lose hours of progress to someone who clearly isn't playing fairly. Facepunch and server admins do ban cheaters, but it often feels like they're always one step behind.

I've put way too many hours into Rust hoping it would get better, but instead it's just become one of the most frustrating games I've ever played.
The biggest issue is the **cheaters**. No matter what server you join, it feels like there's always someone using ESP, aimbots, recoil scripts, or other cheats. You spend hours farming resources, building a base, and getting geared, only to get wiped by someone who somehow knows exactly where you are. It completely ruins the survival experience and makes every death feel suspicious instead of deserved.
Then there's the community. While there are some good players, a huge portion of the player base is unbelievably toxic. Constant trash talk, griefing, door camping, roof camping, offline raiding, and players who only seem interested in making everyone else's experience miserable. New players barely stand a chance.
The grind is another massive problem. You can spend an entire day gathering materials, crafting, and expanding your base, only to log in the next morning and find everything gone because your base was raided while you were offline. Losing progress is part of Rust, but when it happens over and over, it starts to feel like you're wasting your time.
Performance is also disappointing. Even on decent PCs, the game can suffer from poor optimization, random frame drops, stuttering, long loading times, and crashes. Every major update seems to introduce new bugs while old issues remain.
The learning curve is brutal. Beginners are thrown into the game with almost no guidance, and experienced players dominate every server. Unless you already have hundreds or thousands of hours, expect to spend most of your time dying.
The game also demands an unhealthy amount of time. If you don't play every day, someone else will out-farm you, out-progress you, and eventually destroy everything you've built. It often feels less like a game and more like a second job.
Overall, Rust has an incredible concept, but the constant cheating, toxic community, endless grinding, offline raiding, poor optimization, bugs, and massive time commitment make it incredibly difficult to enjoy. The roleplay and inter-group dynamics outside of combat are non-existent on a solo or random encounter level. Without the depth of interaction, it leads to a gameplay loop that requires significant time investment, just to be offline raided. The average adult is not going to wake up and play at 5 am when all the raids occur.
