Take a classic skate boarding game, with some quite good story writing, mash it with the aesthetic and stylised visuals of Jet Set Radio, put the main character into a train and crank it to 100. This game is such a fever dream to play and an experience you will keep getting more and more gripped to the further you get into it.

\n\t\t\t\t\tWith Hi-Fi Rush, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and now Denshattack!, game developers have to just stop casually dropping Game of the Year contenders with no hype or fanfare. Seriously, I don’t know why this keeps happening, but 3 of the past 4 years have had some of their absolute top-tier games drop seemingly out of nowhere. I know Hi-Fi Rush was literally shadowdropped, and both Expedition 33 and Denshattack! had trailers before launch, but these games didn’t get even the most minuscule fraction of marketing attention that a standard AAA release does. Something like GTA VI will have 800 times the marketing budget of Denshattack!, but it'll only end up being a fraction as good. There must be something in the water with these teams just putting out banger after banger with minimal hype.

But yeah, it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year so far, and the year is running out of time to have something that tops Denshattack!. It’s excellently crafted on every level of gameplay design, making it entertaining and engaging from the moment the game starts. It’s exceptionally confident—and deservedly so—in its presentation and execution, and its light story is well-paced and perfect for the type of game it is, but it doesn’t sacrifice any of its endearing characters or charm to keep it light. I’ve seen people compare it to things like Jet Set Radio and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and I know those games have gotten a lot of love in their time, but I believe Denshattack! is on a level of its own that goes beyond the game’s obvious inspirations. Like some of those outstanding aforementioned games, knowing exactly what you want the game to be, and being able to develop within your scope, is how you knock it out of the park with games that can pull people in.

The game starts by saying that an environmental crisis has forced large chunks of Japan’s population into domed cities, all connected by an underground train network, though it admits the story isn’t really about that. It focuses on a girl named Emi, who starts out delivering ramen using a train car on tracks repurposed for Denshattack, which is essentially extreme sports for train cars. She delivers ramen to Fernando, a photographer who also authors a zine, and he convinces her to take part in Denshattack to set up the story's context.

This is the kind of game where the story isn’t necessarily what you’re buying and playing it for. The story is still very fun and full of enjoyable characters, don’t get me wrong, but it’s definitely the type of game that most people are going in for the gameplay loop over the narrative, and then they realize that the story is also good. Because of that, I appreciate that the game basically starts with Emi having no idea what Denshattack is, and then, in the next sentence, wants to give it a try with only the tiniest amount of prompting. The developers knew what they were doing by throwing you right into the good stuff, and I can get behind that kind of quick pacing in a game like Denshattack!. The whole thing moves at a solid clip, and it wastes no time.

From there, it really kicks off. It’s a level-based game that takes you on a tour of Japan through chapters. The gameplay is all about you doing sick stunts, tricks, and aerial maneuvers in your train car. Denshattack! starts nice and simple with basic gameplay concepts to ease you in, but each chapter adds something new you have to learn to progress through each level. While the overall learning curve is solid, those new skills you have to figure out are thrown at you pretty quickly. I always felt like it would take me a while to get used to them, but I would end up having them down just as quickly as they were thrown at me, which reflects good design and progression, and one of the core video game design principles of continued learning being key in a fun game. Eventually, each new move became another cool tool in my arsenal for pulling off awesome tricks.

Each level has specific goals and challenges, with many of the challenges being completely optional ones you have to watch for on alternate, branching pathways. I lost count of how many times I completed a level without even realizing I had missed an optional path, each with its own unique visuals, item pickups, and spots to do tricks. Denshattack! is a game that’s all about mastery through repetition, and including multiple objectives and paths that will likely take more than one attempt is a good way to help players who want to do everything really iron out those skills without making the difficulty curve unbearable.

All the levels are very fun, but most of the real joy comes from the excellent boss fights. Each one is a colorful, unique display of the player’s skills and the enjoyable, quirky cast of characters you meet and befriend throughout the whole game. There’s also a banger track playing in the background of each boss stage, and the Lotus Juice jumpscare I got during one of the boss fights in the middle of the game really solidified the fact that I was playing one of the year’s best, and I was only partially through it. When the game can seamlessly blend its mechanics into fighting a boss that also feels like you’re playing Guitar Hero, and it doesn’t feel like any substantial change took place in its core mechanics, it’s doing something right.

A wonderful, colorful cast of endearing characters Emi meets along the way holds the great gameplay together contextually. It’s great fun to see their personalities come alive during gameplay, but I also like their interactions with each other and with Emi herself in downtime moments. They don’t have the world’s deepest writing, and they aren’t filled with exceptionally deep lore you could make 10-hour video essays on, but they’re fun and likable, which is too much of a rarity in video games today. Plus, Denshattack! might be the first game I’ve seen where the boys and girls use a hot spring at the same time, and there isn’t any weird perving going on. It’s a small thing, but it was genuinely nice to see some normal, human interaction between the characters.

And, without getting into major spoiler territory for later story elements, everything wraps up neatly with all the friends Emi made along the way. Again, the later story parts and the ending aren’t going to bring about deep reflections and thoughts that shatter your sense of self, but when I got to see how everything played out, I felt happy to be along for the journey. It’s all just so enjoyable, and I found myself smiling and happy as the game progressed and everything unfolded in front of me. By the end, I was fully on board with Emi as a character, and she didn’t have to mope and wallow in melodrama or angst for it to happen. I loved all of her friends, and I think I’m at the point where I’m comfortable saying that the “Power of Friendship” trope is one of my favorites. Simply put, it’s just nice.

I think that’s a good way to put it, actually. If you just want to play a game that will make you smile, both because of the sheer joy of its gameplay and characters, play Denshattack!. It oozes irresistible charm, life, confidence, and energy out of every pore. Packaging that with a fun, lovable group of characters, some tight, well-paced gameplay, and a home run of a soundtrack Denshattack! is the kind of game that you’ll want to keep playing for years. The developers clearly put a lot of love and heart into making it, and that’s on full display in the excellent product they delivered. I can’t say it's my Game of the Year just yet, but as an underappreciated hit, Denshattack! has easily earned its place among the year's very best.\t\t\t\t\t

But for real, Denshattack! oozes style. The fluid gameplay pairs very well with its awesome, energetic soundtrack and ensemble of stylish characters. It runs smooth on my PC and isn't buggy. This is not the style of game I would normally play, so I will say it took me some time to get used to the controls. I love the little infographic things you can unlock and the customization is cool. If you're an achievement hunter/3-stars-only type player, you're really going to get some extra mileage out of this game. I spent the first half maybe redoing every level trying to get the gold medal but eventually decided to just go ham for the rest of the campaign.
Has a very simple and heartwarming story, with PLENTY of likeable characters, all with their own identity to the region they occupy, culminates in a few final levels where your entire repertoire gets tested amazingly.
Stays introducing new mechanics until you beat the game. Every single region introduces 1 or 2 new mechanics so, right when you think you've got it down, its gonna hit you with some new ♥♥♥♥.

Like I'm not even trying to overexaggerate or anything it really is just that good. The fast paced gameplay is so incredibly addicting. Even if you aren't the greatest player in the world this game makes you feel cool as hell for everything that you do. Levels are constantly giving you these cool new mechanics to work with so it never gets repetitive or boring. The art style is an absolute treat to look at. The visuals are just absolutely stunning both in the menus and in gameplay and also the character designs are beautiful. AND THE MUSIC DUDE OH THE MUSICCCC!!!! This I feel like is the greatest thing to come out of this game 100% they really gathered Tee Lopes, Sean Bialo, Shoji Meguro, Lotus Juice, Andrew One, and 2 Mello to form the damn OST Justice League because my god this is one of the greatest OSTs I've ever listened to which only makes these levels even more exciting to play.

I have plenty of good to say about this game, and admittedly some bad too
I have beaten this game and honestly for the most part I had a blast. I am a massive fan of counterculture and a fan of Japanese culture, so the setting and artistic direction tickles my brain beautifully. The gameplay is utterly brilliant. Outside of maybe Jet-Set Radio and maybe the tony hawk games, I cannot even begin to think of a game that is even remotely similar to this one. YOU USE A TRAIN AS A SKATEBOARD AND GO AT MACH F(#K FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, WHAT OTHER GAME EVEN GOES REMOTELY CLOSE TO THAT!?!?! And despite the fact you're kinda forced to go fowards, there is still plenty of agency on the player's part to ensure the game remains fun and engaging.
NOW, for the bad, and spoilers ahead for this part '=w=
The game sometimes just...doesn't, 9 times out of ten the game feels responsive, but there are some rough edges where inputs/interactions with the environments just don't do what you expect them to do, sometimes the ladder works in your favor by saving you from a crash, but other times despite pressing the input multiple times to dismount, the train just doesn't and you eat a face full of A R R O W. Or you interact with a, well, interactable, it sends you somewhere completely different from where you're supposed to be. Story wise, eeeeeeehhh, for the most part its decent, the characters are pretty fun, but HOLY F$(K doesn't it get tropey at times, the ending actually left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth because they refused to kill the protagonist despite pretending she'll die. SHE FELL FROM ORBIT, HER JOURNEY ENDED, LET THAT PSYCHO RAMEN GIRL DIE IN A BLAZE OF GLORY, THIS TROPE IS OVERDONE AS S!#T!

It constantly iterates upon its mechanics, never feeling stale. Each level feels like it's own spectacle, and the soundtrack only matches those strengths with a seperate song for each. single. level.
And it is not just random compositions you will hear once and forget, the set of composers they brought on for this game is wild. I loved playing every second of this game, even when trying to finish every level with a golden medal became difficult. The story kind of didn't flow very well, but that hardly matters in a game such as this. A huge recommend, and probbably in my top 5 games of the year.


There is a somewhat important downside I would like to mention. I was playing on my Linux machine and Steamdeck so that might have played a part in it, but I encountered quite a few issues. The biggest one was not being able to beat chapter 8 on the steamdeck because the game would constantly go into a fatal error and crash.
On pc however, I had a whole different slew of problems. My pc is budget, but it doesn't feel like a game like this should run this bad. Performance on the Steamdeck was perfect, but on pc I constantly faced issues due to the game hitching for a split second. This would cause the physics of the game engine to sometimes just completely die which would lead to a whole slew of bugs like the train big mid air and then suddenly colliding with something on the ground, causing the train to crash and forcing me to restart my no crash run. This would happen on every single level while playing on pc. Hopefully it is just a me issue and not a general issue with the game. (Though the Steamdeck crash probbably does affect everyone)\t\t\t\t\t

It's a game so good that I feel bad for calling it a 'Tony Hawk-like' because it essentially revamps the gameplay style of the entire genre and flips the experience into something totally unique and amazing!

The levels of this game are circuit based, meaning you run certain paths of courses in order to complete objectives, some of which could be as simple as "reach the goal" but others of which include racing other trains, completing objectives across a spiderweb-style map, defeating a boss or scoring as many points as possible in jungle-gym style maps. The (surprisingly gripping and relevant) narrative of this game carries the player towards different upgrades as you play, some of which can be brought back into older levels to have an easier time training together tricks to get those really high scores!

The music is absolutely phenomenal, blending all the genres you might expect to see from an arcade high-score tricking game from the early 2000s and then even more! Every single song in this game is a smash hit! It is similar to Katamari Damacy to me in this way - not because the genres necessarily match, but just because every single level brought a new fantastic blend of visual design combined with a fantastic soundtrack in way that made me feel a pure joy for gaming reminiscent of those 2000's gems from my childhood such as Katamari Damacy, Jet Set Radio, Tony Hawk and SSX. The vibes are absolutely out of this world!

The character design is a joy as well! Combining manga-esque panel driven dialogue with charming low poly 3D characters inside beautifully coloured stylised landscapes, world elements and cutscenes, alongside nicely animated 2D story sections lets this fantastic cast of characters and voice actors absolutely shine! I saw in the run-up to the games release that they did interviews with each of the voice actors for the main characters, and I held off from reading them at the time so as not to spoil the characters from the game, but it's clear that both the English and Japanese cast of this game had a great time bringing these beautiful characters to life!

The narrative was very unexpected and landed much better than it needed to! The story is analogous to corporate driven AI/Data Centres, their capacity to control the population and how that can change the way societies live their lives, and what the indomitable human spirit (and the sheer power of Denshattack lmao) has to say about that!

There are loads of levels and even more bonus objectives called 'Dares' in this game to keep you entertained, as well as plenty of optional collectibles and stuff around the maps (each of which contribute to lore, world building, train design or new trains with new abilities!) The way the progression system drops new techniques on you which you can use to weave together more basic tricks in line with the obstacles of a stage is absolutely ingenious - it makes for what is essentially a custom difficulty level which the player can modulate as they please throughout a level! Can you see how the next 2 or 3 bends of the track are looking up ahead? Why not throw in a jump-trick in between the bends! Then why not tie the tricks together by landing in a manual to preserve your combo? Maybe there's not enough track to stay airbourne between the turns? Slam down to land early, or maybe just use multi-track drifting to keep your combo meter rising! Or if that seems like too much, just use the brake to take the turns as fast as possible... Alternatively: do all of those things and enter a flow state so blissful it successfully makes you forget you've got rent coming up soon.

The way this game keeps you literally locked to certain paths but then gives you the freedom to add your own style to those fixed paths you choose feels like bliss. This is the type of gameplay Boost Formula Sonic or 3D trick games like Skate wish they could borrow even a fraction of! Absolutely try this game asap!!!!

TLDR - if this game looks even a little bit like it might be something you'd like - BUY IT at any price - it's worth much much more than it costs.\t\t\t\t\t
