God this game does stuff right. The visuals are a clear stand out here. No dull browns and boring landscapes. Everything is bright, colorful, and full of life. Things can get a tad difficult to parse during some of the more hectic levels, but in general the visuals are top tier and do not disappoint.
+ Gameplay:
The gameplay is also perfectly done. The game starts out pretty simple. Race along the track, hit boosters, do tricks, do a drift or two. Then it slowly starts to add mechanics to your mental stack. At first, it seems like a lot, because it is. But by the end you'll be chaining together so many different mechanics it will feel like you're playing a rhythm game and just instinctively hitting the correct buttons at the right time.
+ Level Design:
This game sort of runs the gamut on levels. Sort of. None of them are bad. None of them are even really not good. But some of them are good and other are simply AMAZING. The spectacle levels and boss fights are true standouts in managing all of the game's mechanics while pure nonsense is happening around you. The final couple of levels are honestly some of the most anime and most enjoyable levels to cap off the whole experience.
+ Length:
I was truly shocked at the amount of levels in the game. It didn't really kick in how many challenges they would be packing in to 9 regions. If you're just playing the game for completion, it probably won't take you very long. You might consider it short. But for 100% completion it was literally perfect. Getting gold on all levels and doing all of the Dares took me just long enough where I didn't get bored or tired.
+ Difficulty:
If your brain isn't built for chaining together different mechanics and tricks at a fast pace, this game might prove challenging. The game is pretty forgiving if you just want to complete the levels though. However, going for gold medals and full completion on every level was just the right amount of challenge in my opinion. You can unlock trains later that help with certain types of Dares (challenges) and the best part is that not all challenges have to be done in one run. You can do one run to focus on not crashing, another for collectibles, another for score, etc etc. Your best result will carry over. So I never really had to run a level more than maybe 5 times to get gold. They recently updated to add Platinum medals and those seem nuts so there's even something there now for people who really want a more difficult set of challenges.
+ Collectibles/Upgrades:
The collectibles are super simple. Paint cans, gears, and film reels. The novelty to them though is that a lot of tracks have branching paths, meaning you have an incentive to take multiple shots at a level and go down different paths to get the collectibles or the secret onsen exits. You can then take the paint cans to buy cool stickers for your trains, the gears to buy new trains with different special abilities, and the film reels to complete fanzines that give you lore on the characters you're going up against.
+ Music:
The music is good. Normally I don't vibe SUPER well with reading a bunch of lore outside of the gameplay (it really has to hook me), but it helps that the song that plays during the fanzine readings is real good lol. The music otherwise is solid with a few more of those memorable tracks during set piece moments.
+ Tricks:
Tricking a train is some wild stuff. Executing these tricks with the right stick while using pretty much every other button on the controller by the end of the game is definitely hitting the mental stack hard, but it feels so good. The trick variety is also really solid. I didn't expect as many as there are, even if pretty much half of them are just "do the motion in the opposite direction". Finding out the timing and when you can bust out all Hardcore tricks vs mixing Hardcore and Beginner tricks together for maximum score is a good time.
There are a couple "bugs" seemingly in the game. They aren't game breaking and won't soft lock you out of progress or anything from what I experienced, but they can ruin a "no crash" run sometimes. For example, sometimes switching "tracks" in the air doesn't seem to work as intended in a couple places and you need to essentially spam the direction or change the timing to get it to work as intended. Sometimes you just attach to the track weird and go backwards. Stuff like that. The levels are usually pretty short (with a couple exceptions) so running into one of these isn't really the end of the world, but can kinda take you out of the flow in the moment.
+/- Variety:
Each track his it's own "type" in the game. Normal tracks, trick courses, time trails/races, and boss fights. The reason this is mixed is because some don't seem as fleshed out as others. The boss fights clearly got so much love and care, but the races are sorta meh. The opponents you face don't really fight back and you can take them out just by running into them. They truly pose no threat at all so it just feels like more of a time trial mode than an actual race. So none of the modes are bad, but can feel a little less involved than others.

The gameplay is also perfectly done. The game starts out pretty simple. Race along the track, hit boosters, do tricks, do a drift or two. Then it slowly starts to add mechanics to your mental stack. At first, it seems like a lot, because it is. But by the end you'll be chaining together so many different mechanics it will feel like you're playing a rhythm game and just instinctively hitting the correct buttons at the right time.
+ Level Design:
This game sort of runs the gamut on levels. Sort of. None of them are bad. None of them are even really not good. But some of them are good and other are simply AMAZING. The spectacle levels and boss fights are true standouts in managing all of the game's mechanics while pure nonsense is happening around you. The final couple of levels are honestly some of the most anime and most enjoyable levels to cap off the whole experience.
+ Length:
I was truly shocked at the amount of levels in the game. It didn't really kick in how many challenges they would be packing in to 9 regions. If you're just playing the game for completion, it probably won't take you very long. You might consider it short. But for 100% completion it was literally perfect. Getting gold on all levels and doing all of the Dares took me just long enough where I didn't get bored or tired.
+ Difficulty:
If your brain isn't built for chaining together different mechanics and tricks at a fast pace, this game might prove challenging. The game is pretty forgiving if you just want to complete the levels though. However, going for gold medals and full completion on every level was just the right amount of challenge in my opinion. You can unlock trains later that help with certain types of Dares (challenges) and the best part is that not all challenges have to be done in one run. You can do one run to focus on not crashing, another for collectibles, another for score, etc etc. Your best result will carry over. So I never really had to run a level more than maybe 5 times to get gold. They recently updated to add Platinum medals and those seem nuts so there's even something there now for people who really want a more difficult set of challenges.
+ Collectibles/Upgrades:
The collectibles are super simple. Paint cans, gears, and film reels. The novelty to them though is that a lot of tracks have branching paths, meaning you have an incentive to take multiple shots at a level and go down different paths to get the collectibles or the secret onsen exits. You can then take the paint cans to buy cool stickers for your trains, the gears to buy new trains with different special abilities, and the film reels to complete fanzines that give you lore on the characters you're going up against.
+ Music:
The music is good. Normally I don't vibe SUPER well with reading a bunch of lore outside of the gameplay (it really has to hook me), but it helps that the song that plays during the fanzine readings is real good lol. The music otherwise is solid with a few more of those memorable tracks during set piece moments.
+ Tricks:
Tricking a train is some wild stuff. Executing these tricks with the right stick while using pretty much every other button on the controller by the end of the game is definitely hitting the mental stack hard, but it feels so good. The trick variety is also really solid. I didn't expect as many as there are, even if pretty much half of them are just "do the motion in the opposite direction". Finding out the timing and when you can bust out all Hardcore tricks vs mixing Hardcore and Beginner tricks together for maximum score is a good time.
Mixed:
+/- "Bugs":There are a couple "bugs" seemingly in the game. They aren't game breaking and won't soft lock you out of progress or anything from what I experienced, but they can ruin a "no crash" run sometimes. For example, sometimes switching "tracks" in the air doesn't seem to work as intended in a couple places and you need to essentially spam the direction or change the timing to get it to work as intended. Sometimes you just attach to the track weird and go backwards. Stuff like that. The levels are usually pretty short (with a couple exceptions) so running into one of these isn't really the end of the world, but can kinda take you out of the flow in the moment.
+/- Variety:
Each track his it's own "type" in the game. Normal tracks, trick courses, time trails/races, and boss fights. The reason this is mixed is because some don't seem as fleshed out as others. The boss fights clearly got so much love and care, but the races are sorta meh. The opponents you face don't really fight back and you can take them out just by running into them. They truly pose no threat at all so it just feels like more of a time trial mode than an actual race. So none of the modes are bad, but can feel a little less involved than others.
Overall:
Denshattack! is essentially a blend of a skating and rhythm game with insane spectacles and a punk ass counterculture plot about standing up to the corporation destroying the world. All while being VERY anime and somehow developed by a team out of Spain. This is for sure a strange concoction and combination of elements, but it just works. Doing insane train tricks and delivering ramen to unite Japan while telling the soulless corporation to kick rocks is definitely odd, but it's so full of sauce and flavor you don't even really think about how insane it is that you totally just beat a Kaiju's ass with the help of a Voltron style mech made of other trains. It has elements of Jet Set Radio and Tony Hawk, but if I were asked to pick a game that even remotely plays like Denshattack with its aspects intact, I would absolutely fail. It's that unique, and luckily, that great, too.
This game's art style is incredible. They get so much out of so little. Huge landscapes to drive your train through with great art direction that is incredibly colorful, but even though you're speeding through these spots, you never feel like you struggle in knowing where to go next. The way the game uses color and helps you associate stuff with certain colors is really well implemented.
It also has so much sauce, so much style. Each character design and each location has its own kind of vibe, and the way they make a dystopian Japan feel like a colorful skatepark is incredible.
The UI especially has so much character. Everything has such a simple color palette, but the way it's drawn, the way the UI pops in when finishing a track to go to the result screen - it's wonderful.
All this personality is even more reinforced by a banging soundtrack that is so good that I would almost add every song to my playlist.
Story-wise it's neat. The game starts out caring more about the fun of Denshattack than the rebellious meaning behind it. We kinda brush over how people in the dome cities run by Miraido live their day-to-day lives and instead focus on fighting the very colorful cast of characters. It does eventually get serious, and while some things hit, some others don't. It's very cheesy, but when the game tries to play it completely straight, it can come off as cringe, partly due to how out of nowhere the tonal shift can come.
This still doesn't mean the world or characters are bad. They have plenty of heart to them when it counts, especially when the story and levels go hand in hand and, for example, make the raid on a dome city not just a set piece but a pivotal moment for the plot.
Even the worldbuilding is great. I loved reading the magazines, learning about the different organizations, the dystopia Miraido created, and the love for everything Japan, from south to north.
And boy, do you get to know Japan. You'll drive through the entire country on your train while kickflipping, grinding, jumping, and multitrack-drifting from region to region.
The gameplay is so incredibly fun, because, while it is railroaded, there's no point where the game has nothing for you to do. Each level has multiple collectibles and challenges to do, while also sporting time and score medals. Every second you spend on these rails, you make tiny decisions to optimize your score or speed, and this is what makes it work. It shouldn't go this hard to drive a train from A to B, but it does. There is no room to breathe, and when you think you finally learned all there is to it, the game introduces a completely new mechanic you need to understand before progressing.
Be it driving off the rails through tunnels, environmental changes like underwater and on walls, or simply new mechanics like using the winds or getting your combo high enough to summon the invisible train tracks to find new paths to optimize your runs even more, it's incredible. The flow state this game reaches is unlike most other games that cater to the idea of score chasing and speedrunning, leading me to get a gold medal on every single level to find all there is.
The only real complaint I have is that the final ability, the gravity switching, is too much. The tracks are already magnetic to the point where you can just jump and drive upside down if there's a track above you, and this leads to a few later levels having one section where it feels a little too cluttered.
What's even more remarkable is how much variety the silly train game offers in terms of levels.
There are the main levels, going from point A to B; these are the main attraction and easily the best part. They offer so much variety in what they show; one second you're driving through caves, the next you have to dodge a massive Kaiju's rampage, while the other your train is on a ferris wheel jumping over the ocean. This all results in every level somehow being the new best level of the game.
Then there are the bosses; oh my lord, they are great. They go absolutely bonkers with their concepts and truly feel like big celebrations to close off a chapter. I really don't wanna get into them too much, but I think most of you have already seen the first boss where you fight a mech made of trains, and let me assure you, it by far isn't even the craziest you're going to fight.
Then there are regular races. These are surprisingly fun, as they are often designed with the intention of using the three laps wisely by adding some new thing each lap, be it trying a different path or spawning the ghost tracks for even more shortcuts.
Trick parks are on the less interesting side. There is no time limit; you just have to get a high score, and while I get their inclusion, they never get as crazy, because most levels do not evolve; they are a static environment, perfect for one thing but not much else.
My least favorite are the objective maps, where you have to do 3 tasks on a big map. These, for the most part, are very long and at times feel way too drawn out. I often felt like I would rather have them be three individual levels instead. It doesn't help either that the first run will always feel a little confusing due to how many paths there are. It's especially annoying when you miss your exit to an objective. Like, it almost feels like missing your exit on the Autobahn and having to drive 10 more minutes, while ashamed, wondering if you can even make it on time now. It also has another issue.
The game has its fair share of bugs. The longer the levels go, the more likely they are to happen. This makes the objective maps way too annoying to play, since there are some glitches, like a scripted ramp shooting you into a wall, an input not working, or getting stuck for a second and dying. This obviously tanks your score down to 0 if you were playing risky, meaning you can spend 5 minutes going perfect on everything only to die and feel the urge to throw your controller at the wall.
So I sadly stopped going for a high score that is higher than gold many times, because why would I want myself to get mad at something I didn't mess up?
...Denshattack is a game that truly is like nothing else. I have no idea how a sequel would even look like, because, aside from some polish and small issues, they explored everything there is. I loved playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Jet Set Radio Future and Sonic during my childhood, this game is a perfect storm of a blend when it comes to said games, clearly inspired by other games but also manages to have its own creative twist. Gameplay is tremendously smooth, really responsive and addicting, even getting all the collectibles and discovering different/hidden routes is a pleasure to do. Music is beautiful and catchy, the art/graphics are mind-blowing (cel-shaded-esque) really beautiful game. Runs extremely well and the fps never dips at all.

The music is incredible, it's got a really fun and flashy artstyle, the story is super cute and the gameplay is SUPER addicting. Was playing it through the night and literally had to force myself to stop playing just so I could go sleep LMAO. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI love this game. It has high adrenaline action and the score and combo chasing of a classic skateboarding game. I like the music and the vibrant anime visuals. The cutscenes aren't that high budget, they are more like moving stills, but they get the story across and the voice acting is also great. Replayability is also cromulent, if you go for Gold Medals on the many levels. (Not necessary to progress the game).
Played on Steam Deck at 60 FPS (90 was to much on the crazier levels) and played at 144 FPS on my (admittedly) powerful Desktop (RTX 4080).
Overall a really awesome action game.

I feel this will be my version of that when my kids ask what the best games were in my day. Non-stop FUN!
