Instead of learning through experience, practice, or survival, your character becomes stronger because they happened to find the correct piece of literature. It feels artificial, gamey, and completely disconnected from the world.
At the same time, traders have become the center of the entire gameplay loop. Sure, giving them quests sounds useful on paper, but now you're constantly running errands just to unlock progression. Survival, resource management, inventory decisions, and the feeling of struggling through a hostile post-apocalyptic wasteland have all been pushed into the background.
What used to be a survival sandbox now feels like a chain of mandatory tasks.
One of the things I loved most about the older versions was the freedom. You could go almost anywhere from the beginning. Some areas were more dangerous, some required better equipment or preparation, but the world was open to you. The game trusted you to make your own decisions.
Now entire portions of content are locked behind masks, reputation requirements, unlock chains, and quest progression. Instead of exploring because you're curious, you're exploring because the game has finally granted you permission.
The result is a much more restrictive and arcade-like experience.
Every update seems to add another layer of artificial progression while removing the sense of freedom, danger, and discovery that originally made the game special.
Maybe new players won't notice the difference. But after 782 hours, having watched the game evolve from its earliest versions, I can honestly say that I find it less engaging, less immersive, and significantly less enjoyable than it used to be.

It has been plagued by performance issues for multiplayer even up till the present date. I have some 600 hours on this game. It is fun, especially so with friends, but $45? Nope. Go buy Ark survival evolved on sale for dirt cheap, or valheim, or the amazing Palworld (massive updates). There are way better survival games at bargain prices. Seriously, who came up with this price tag?

Yet when I'm bored and no new games are out I have come back to 7 days to die. Not saying it the greatest game ever for everyone, but it sure scratches my itch. I cannot tell you why though, because I don't know. It seems to have the right mic of very casual building/farming opposed by white knuckle horde nights where you can lose everything. I thought if society collapsed, I would be resourceful, tough, maybe even the respected leader of a small group of survivors. Turns out I would spend the apocalypse rummaging through kitchen cabinets for canned chili, eating boiled meat in a shack made of crooked wooden blocks, and getting mauled to death because I forgot to reload my pipe shotgun. Every seven days, the game gives me plenty of warning that an army of zombies is coming, and every seven days I somehow act shocked when they rip through my “impenetrable fortress,” which is usually just a refurbished gas station held together by cobblestone, panic, and one door I forgot to upgrade. I do not survive the blood moon. I simply inconvenience it for a few minutes before sprinting into the darkness wearing plant fiber pants and regret.

Today?
They're asking **$45** for a game whose longevity and popularity is propped up by one of the most dedicated modding communities around.
Let me be clear:

It offers a variety of builds, weapons, and skills to choose from, but it is not recommended if you are afraid of jump scares.
