It was strange running through those narrow corridors; I still couldn't figure out what the reference was. If I had to rate it out of 10, I'd give it a solid seven. The only problem is, where should I have entered the code 5913?

I bought this because I first read about the history of Kowloon Walled City around 10 years ago and saw the excellent photographs by Greg Girard. Ever since, it's stuck in my mind as a fascinating/horrifying nugget of human existence that looks more like a slice out of some cyberpunk dystopia than anything real. But it WAS real.
This game captures the essence of all of the media that exists of the now-demolished city and is gorgeous to look at. It uses the new "bodycam" style of graphics people are going for lately with a fish-eye lens and a cursor that doesn't quite move the camera on a 1:1 basis, meaning you can move a flashlight around without turning the camera. It's tough to explain if you haven't played something using it but I really dig it, it brings a level of immersion to things that's hard to describe.
Anyway, it's a short creepy walking sim with plenty of jump scares and an amazing atmosphere. You will absolutely know if you want to play this just by looking at the videos, but if you're at all interested in Kowloon Walled City I would almost call it a must-play.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tEverything good about this game can be experienced by looking at the screenshots: the lighting looks nice and there is quite a lot of detail to the environments. But even the environments are not that impressive when you take a good look at them, because the Kowloon setting is just a gimmick to make you think the game will be more interesting than it really is. The detailing fails to give the impression that you're in China, or anywhere in East Asia -- for example: all the graffiti, and almost all of the other text, is in English or Russian. In this game, Kowloon is basically a khrushchevka where every resident inexplicably has 50 bottles of soy sauce that are labeled "Soy Sauce" in English. Though sometimes the labels are backwards, because the developer wasn't paying attention when placing things.

If you like that sort of thing it will be an experience for you. I beat it in about 40 minutes so keep that in mind. Puzzles are very easy and you are almost handheld along\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I enjoyed the feel of everything, but soon the true intention of the game is laid bare in the form 'what happened to Kowloon and the its victims' and this does add a forced element of emotion to the game.

The parts of the city you can see including the apartments are really well rendered. The regular citizens give me Outlast patient vibes to the point I thought they might have been an asset flip. Some light puzzle solving and only really one point where you can fail. Otherwise, it is all vibes here. Its short run time is earned in its overall.

Events not triggering unless you walked around multiple times. Lots of stutters on high quality setting. And very fiddly doors, swinging in both directions and often blocking the player because how poorly they opened. The latter even happened during a chase scene for f's sake!

I'd have refund it within the first 10 minutes but it was sitting in my backlog for too long. Puzzles didn't make any sense, so you just walk back and forth and open doors, Doors... which is its Main thing and they can be a nightmare by swinging both ways. There was a part where the camera pans to a code on the wall after the chase part (5931 or something like that, I forgot since i finished it and uninstalled) and I was remembering this code the whole time, I mean... IT LOOKED RIGHT AT THE CODE and I didn't see any padlocks for it, unless I missed it. Doesn't matter though since I beat the game anyways. One cheap jump scare. Just play something else or buy it if you like the devs and wasn't to support them or beat it and refund.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
