Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a very dumb and self indulgent game that can barely hold the weight of its sequel baggage. When I first played it on the PlayStation 3, I hated it.
Now, many years later, I mellowed out a bit. I can now see that this game loves its characters and their legacies, and it loves the fans. It wanted to give the series the greatest and most dramatic sendoff it could, and if you just allow it to be a bit stupid and contrived at times, and embrace the rule of cool, it will work.
The biggest obstacle to taking this game seriously is that the voice acting and writing is more "anime" than it has ever been before or after, and the cutscene motion capture animations and pacing are over-acted and awkwardly stilted. This only applies to cutscenes where people engage in dialogue, which is the majority of them, but all the action focused parts in them have great motion capture animations.
The gameplay in MGS4 was always amazing, the second best in the series after MGS3. It is a lot more focused on being a shooter with streamlined controls and menus (which is even better now with mouse aiming), while still feeling a lot like MGS3. It's highly replayable, with a huge number of guns, tactics, and features that you can experiment with. It truly shines as a stealth game on the New Game+ "The Boss Extreme" difficulty, especially if you aim to get the highest rank of "Big Boss".
I think the "brown and grey" aesthetic that was so dominant in 2008 has aged pretty well, I can certainly appreciate it more now than I did at the time. Regardless of the general colour palette, Yoji Shinkawa's art direction is as strong here as it has ever been, and it's arguably his best work. - The dynamic resolution optimisation feature was left turned on, for some reason. There are ways to disable it.
- The audio is messed up in several ways. This is partially fixed by the community.
- Some controls are weird and can't be rebound. This can be worked around with an AutoHotkey script.
- No support for the original PS3 controls and button prompts. This is partially fixed by the community.
- No MSAA. There is a community patch to add it.
- The framerate is still locked to 60 FPS. It's already great that the game can now actually reach 60 FPS consistently, but unlocking it would have been better. There are community fixes for this, but they are buggy.
- The game is limited to 16:9 resolutions. There are community fixes for this, but currently the options are either incomplete or vibecoded slop.
- Metal Gear Online was not ported.

Главное счастье этой коллекции в том, что Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots наконец-то вырвалась из лап многолетней эксклюзивности PlayStation 3. Теперь прикоснуться к этой легенде можно без поиска древней консоли, тем более порт чуть ли не со старта релиза в отличном состоянии, не как было с мгс 1-3 и мг 1-2, отлично все работает. НАСТОЯЩЕЕ СОБЫТИЕ!
Сюжет - 10/10: Финал мне очень понравился, да и сам сюжет отличный, хоть и не без своих грехов. Это монументальное подведение итогов всей серии: то, что началось ещё с «Философов», здесь финализируется падением «Патриотов», подарив миру свободу и новые возможности. Да, тут есть специфические твисты в духе «персонаж вроде умер, но его забрали, подлатали или держали под надзором ИИ, а после взлома системы он освободился», но это часть шарма. Отдельное моё почтение финальному бою с Ликвид Оцелотом, а также трогательным линиям Отакона, который остался без возлюбленной, но бережёт память о Снейке и дарит будущее Санни, и Джонни Сасаки, который за долгие годы комедийных шуток про диарею наконец-то обрел своё заслуженное счастье на свадьбе.
Геймплей - 9/10: Играется отлично и очень удобно. Отлично реализован баланс: убрали необходимость регулярно питаться, как в MGS3, для сохранения точности стрельбы, но при этом добавили систему стресса и психики - тревогу лучше лишний раз не поднимать и не задерживаться в боях. Главный мем игры - начиная с 3-го акта геймплей пролетает очень быстро, а 3, 4 и 5 акты вообще ощущаются стремительными из-за огромного количества катсцен. Но как же приятно было вернуться на Шадоу-Моузес, вспомнить «Metal Gear?! It can`t be» при виде Metal Gear REX, помянуть Фрэнка Егера (Gray Fox) в той самой комнате кумите и поучаствовать в эпичном (хоть и простом) бою REX против RAY!
Нюансы - 10/10: Фирменные «кодзимовские» детали возведены в абсолют. Дребин со своей обезьяной и отмыванием оружия - однозначно лучший персонаж поддержки! Боссы представляют собой жирную ретроспективу и отсылку к врагам из MGS1 (хоть и в исковерканном виде), а сами девушки-Красавицы - ну просто «pretty good». В игру завезли кучу журналов Playboy и фигурок, а также море отсылок на продукцию Sony и Apple. Музыкальных запоминающихся треков тут, возможно, чуть меньше, чем в MGS1, MGS2 или Peace Walker, но саундтрек всё равно держит уровень и порадует треками из прошлых частей.

This was the first game I ever played on the PS3. I had the very first generation of the Fat and MGS4 was included in the bundle, back in 2008 (thanks dad). I was only 7 back then and the mechanics, lore etc were all brand new. What fascinated me most were the aesthetics of this game and the kits of the PMCs, and it felt extremely niche and cool to be in the know of what appeared to be an "underground" game with a moderate learning curve (particularly since I didn't speak English at the time). Back then I couldn't get past Vamp on Act 4.
10 years later, in 2018, I borrowed my brother's PS3 for an entire season for the sole purpose of revisiting this title. Then I bought the Legacy Collection, a converter from VGA to HDMI and audio adapters I could use with my old monitor and the PS3.
Here we are again in 2026. I won't say this is the best MGS because I only barely played MGSV (and Ground Zeroes), but it's certainly worth a run. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tthe MGS4 revisionism is a bit shocking to see, it really wasn't that long ago that the discourse of this game shifted severely, and people recognized it rightfully so as a disaster and a bit of a mistake for the series, but now you're a contrarian if you call MGS4 an outright bad game. is it because all the 20-somethings are now getting late 00s nostalgia and remember their first PS3 game? or because it’s actually a secret masterpiece and we didn’t realize it back then? there's so many inexcusable aspects of this game upon my replay that i'm not sure where this re-appraisal is coming from whatsoever..
act I & II are obviously incredible, and there was a brief moment during act I where i started to think i was wrong about disliking this game all these years! you get a lot of freedom to mess with the huge scope of new mechanics in two really enjoyable warzone sandboxes, and you're encouraged to mess with literally everything and anything. the first two acts really do rival some of the best MGS setpieces in the entire series, but even by the end of act II you can start to see the cracks appear. and then by act III, the entire structural integrity of this game collapses
the discourse about the cutscenes in this game is truthfully tired, but it's still valid... the fatigue of the cutscene onslaught is exhausting on 5 or 6 different levels. if you have any semblance of interest in the lore/continuation of MGS2, all of the nuance, mystery, and interpretation is nuked. if you value the worldbuilding of what the MGS universe looks like in a Patriots-dominated dystopia, it's barely explored whatsoever. if you value any meaningful moments of the interpersonal conflicts and relationships between any characters from the series, they barely exist.. and if they do, they are hamfisted, corny, or just foul. if you value pacing, the respect of your own time, and your own intelligence, you will feel insulted by 1/4 of the cutscenes. why does every act need to remind you with a 15 minute flashback sequence what happened in Snake Eater? why do we need to wrap up every loose end possible, even if it requires egregious, nonsensical retcons? does there have to be a briefing, debriefing, and 45+ minutes of cutscenes in every act?
why is the player not trusted to come to their own interpretations in any form? it’s the total opposite of what video game storytelling should ever look like. in MGS2, we are told literally verbatim to not linger on the past, to not get caught up on words themselves, to find our own meaning in media and storytelling. why then, are we exploring every single possible facet of the past, elaborated on in the gravest detail imaginable here? it always felt like a betrayal of what this series stood for, and for what? so that Kojima could tear down the philosophical implications of the Patriots by just explaining it away as an AI system and nothing more? you may as well literally throw away the ending of MGS2 or retcon it outright as some weird post-modern dream if that’s how we’re gonna handle it
we don't even get the interesting cinematic shots or set pieces when scenes get super long that make it interesting to look at for awhile, unlike the other games. the longest cutscenes in MGS4 [usually 20-35 minutes] take place in a single area, with 3-4 flashback/graph sequences [kill me], as one character blasts you monologue style with the most agonizing retcons and exposition dump you could imagine. and of course, if it's a woman speaking, the camera will be looking upwards at her chest or legs as dehumanizingly as possible as she speaks without a hint of dynamic camera work. the final cutscene of this game is 90 MINUTES LONG, and wraps up the loose ends of every character in the game in the most grotesque, saccharine, sanitized, fan-service way imaginable. the credits roll twice in 90 minutes, and everything after the first credits roll is genuinely agonizing to sit though.
i think the most offensive aspect of this game is how self-masturbatory it is. i hate nostalgia and i hate fan-service, so it's hard to come to terms with the fact that the literal purpose of MGS4's existence is the mantra of, “REMEMBER THIS?!”. the Shadow Moses sequence, while nice to look at, is just shameless levels of "REMEMBER THIS?!", lukewarm IQ fan-service nostalgia bait. it just straight up becomes pathetic after awhile.. must we do the whole “psycho mantis turns off your TV” thing again? we have to do a Rex vs. Ray fight? not to mention the B&B boss unit, whose discourse is also discussed to death, i had soured even more on this playthrough. all of their fights are comically easy, shallow, and meaninglessly sexualized.. every late era Kojima-ism possible
mechanically, the game is incredible.. and i think that's what pains me the most about MGS4. there is so much here that never has it's moment to shine! the dexterity and nuance in movement alone is crazy, and there's stuff you can do here that not even MGSV has. unfortunately, any sense of OSP or difficulty is totally nuked by the asinine Drebin system. buy any weapon any piece of ammo instantly with a seemingly endless stash of funds that you couldn't drain if you wanted to.. what were they thinking? even on the hardest mode, you get such an insane amount of money that scarcity will literally never, ever be an issue. this is the antithesis of why MGS is fun to me. you also get a new tranq gun that may as well function like the NG+ EZ Gun from the old games.. it has no degradable suppressor, no bullet drop, you get it act I, it has more or less unlimited ammo due to Drebin, and it has perfect accuracy. you don't even have to sneak anymore because of this insanely broken thing, have fun! the tranq was always broken, but at least you had to conserve 20-30~ darts, and scavenge for more if you ran out. luckily with MGO2, the multiplayer component, has some revived fan servers available.. it’s a nice way to experience the mechanical depth of MGS4 without being subjected to playing through this one every time you want to have fun with these mechanics
it’s hard to respect MGS4 because it gives the fans exactly what they want and what they had been begging for. everyone involved in this caved in, and that’s why everything presented is so safe it hurts.. and in a series that is literally known for taking bizarre, post-modern risks, everything about the final product rubs me the wrong way. if you value ambiguity or restraint of any kind, MGS4 will insult you and make you feel stupid for even asking. this is a game intended for nostalgic masturbation and spectacle, don’t be mistaken..

mechanically, the game is incredible.. and i think that's what pains me the most about MGS4. there is so much here that never has it's moment to shine! the dexterity and nuance in movement alone is crazy, and there's stuff you can do here that not even MGSV has. unfortunately, any sense of OSP or difficulty is totally nuked by the asinine Drebin system. buy any weapon any piece of ammo instantly with a seemingly endless stash of funds that you couldn't drain if you wanted to.. what were they thinking? even on the hardest mode, you get such an insane amount of money that scarcity will literally never, ever be an issue. this is the antithesis of why MGS is fun to me. you also get a new tranq gun that may as well function like the NG+ EZ Gun from the old games.. it has no degradable suppressor, no bullet drop, you get it act I, it has more or less unlimited ammo due to Drebin, and it has perfect accuracy. you don't even have to sneak anymore because of this insanely broken thing, have fun! the tranq was always broken, but at least you had to conserve 20-30~ darts, and scavenge for more if you ran out. luckily with MGO2, the multiplayer component, has some revived fan servers available.. it’s a nice way to experience the mechanical depth of MGS4 without being subjected to playing through this one every time you want to have fun with these mechanics
it’s hard to respect MGS4 because it gives the fans exactly what they want and what they had been begging for. everyone involved in this caved in, and that’s why everything presented is so safe it hurts.. and in a series that is literally known for taking bizarre, post-modern risks, everything about the final product rubs me the wrong way. if you value ambiguity or restraint of any kind, MGS4 will insult you and make you feel stupid for even asking. this is a game intended for nostalgic masturbation and spectacle, don’t be mistaken..
the excess is entertaining, and it’s an interesting PS3 artifact, but all MGS4 ends up being is a total capitulation to sequel culture.. and i am convinced the reappraisal is coming from people who played this game as children and nothing more\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Now that it's been released from PS3 jail and the graphics have been given a facelift, i've fallen in love with this game yet again with even more context now that i have played the first 2 games as opposed to having only played the 3rd game.
My one and only complaint about this game is not giving us MGO2 with it. Which, I understand it costs a lot of money to run dedicated servers and we do still have the fan revived one, but i feel a small, but very memorable part of what i loved about MGS4 is being able to experience the online aspect of it as a cherry ontop of the already fantastic campaign.
Nonetheless, still highly recommend this, especially for those who are new to the MGS series!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tPlaying through the Metal Gear Solid series for the first time in 2014 and reaching Metal Gear Solid 4 felt like the first time I watched Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, where a long history culminates in a final entry in a series where everything that happened before is paid off in an extremely satisfying way. The first time I played this game was truly something special, and I don’t expect to experience something similar again any time soon.
However, with each subsequent playthrough, the flaws of this game became more and more apparent. The pacing is all over the place, and the dialogue is often great, but also often clunky and sometimes cringe. The game knows how to create extremely good stealth encounters, but the true stealth experience is only a tiny part of it. The mission briefings are the biggest offenders. All of them could easily be at least half as long and nothing would be missing. Most of the BB Corps boss fights provide interesting gameplay, but their story and concept are absolutely terrible. I have no idea what Kojima was thinking here.
The good thing is that for the first playthrough, none of this mattered. The great aspects are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing that they easily overshadowed the smaller flaws, and on your second playthrough you can simply skip the mission briefings and it’s fine. On PC, the game finally runs at a consistent 60 fps (although unlimited fps would be welcome). Metal Gear Solid 3 is probably the better game overall, but MGS4 reaches higher heights, multiple times. More than once my jaw dropped and I thought, “They aren’t seriously about to do what I’m thinking they could do?!”, and then they did it, and it was even ten times more epic than I had imagined.

He still has all the skills he had when creating MGS4, but his new games spread everything too thin across giant open worlds, and his stories have become even more convoluted. I’ve loved this whole franchise for some years and finishing Snake’s story again hit just as hard as the first time. The storytelling, the long ass cutscenes, the way everything ties together.. it is pure Metal Gear chaos in the best possible way.
This Master Collection port is great. Runs smooth, looks clean, and the keyboard + mouse controls actually feel really solid. Didn’t expect them to click this well but they do. Makes sneaking around as old Snake even more satisfying.

Down to the last PSS pistol locations for extra Drebin points at each act location. not gonna lie though I kind of miss the hour long chapter install screens watching helpful tips and snake smoke was oddly satisfying. Fun note... This was the last game me and my uncle got to rent from a blockbuster before they closed down and those same install screens made us keep the game an extra day to complete it lol.
