The gameplay feels amazing, and the audio design is really well done, especially with its positioning and overall immersion. There are a few minor audio bugs, but I didn't encounter many. The ending also made me cry twice, and I don't cry often. Now let's hope Konami patches Peace Walker to include actual raw mouse input!\t\t\t\t\t

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the grand finale of the Metal Gear Saga. Don't start here: This game is meant to wrap up the story so far that started in MG1-2 and MGS 1-3. But when you're done with the previous mainline games, this game is the logical next step.

Story

Solid Snake is on his final mission to assassinate Liquid Ocelot. Snake suffers from accelerated aging due to being a clone. He doesn't have much longer to live. The global economy runs on endless proxy wars fought by PMC groups. Weapons and gear is entirely managed by the Sons of the Patriots-System, which Liquid Ocelot wants to get a hold of. The system is run by the Patriots, the mysterious shadow organization whose existence was uncovered in MGS2.

The story in MGS 4 - lets not make a secret out of it - is a glorious mess. The game attempts to tie up all the loose ends and plot threads from 20 years of Metal Gear history. Even the events of the MSX2 japanese home computer games play a vital role here as the mysteries surrounding Big Boss and the Patriots come to light. The story somewhat suffers from trying to make sense of it all, with the longest cutscenes in the series. Yes, the famous 70+ minute cutscene is in this one.

That said, as it is the series' originally intended finale (or one of) it delivers its story with certainty and honesty. Kojima manages to deliver a story that pulls at your heartstrings. The cutscenes are extremely long, but ultimately very engaging. I've jokingly refered to this game as my favorite movie in the past, and it still is, though no worries, there's some gameplay here too. Every character gets the spotlight, and the grand finale is perfect for long-time fans.

Gameplay
Metal Gear Solid 4's gameplay is a refined take on Snake Eater Subsistence's control scheme and camera. The survival mechanics were removed and replaced with Snake's psyche/stress level, which is reduced in tense situations. Managing stress is, ironically, far less stressful and menu-heavy than the stamina in MGS3 is, though it also plays much less of a prominent role.

You can purchase ammo and guns from Drebin's shop mid-gameplay. This means that, even on Hard, you rarely run out of ammo. Extreme is where things get more interesting, since non-lethal ammo can't be bought there.

MGS4 features the best AI guards, the most fleshed out animations and most impressive weapons catalogue thus far. The camo mechanic was simplified as well, and for the better. If you stand perfectly still, OctoCamo can adjust your suit to the environment like a chameleon which raises your camo index, so you don't need to go into menus anymore for it. That said, this also means you have less options in terms of camouflage and less cool colors to unlock.

The bosses in this game are not as unique or special as in previous titles and mostly reuse gimmicks you were already familiar with, but they are fun to fight nonetheless, especially with the new and improved controls on PC. By the time I was fighting Raging Raven, I noticed just how good the new controls are and how much better I could track her in the air with the Mosin Nagant.

Not enough Gameplay?
MGS 4's biggest flaw is that the gameplay-to-cutscene ratio is poor. The first two chapters of the game have excellent gameplay and great level design. Unfortunately, the game falls off from that point onward: Act 3 is a trailing mission that ends in a bike chase, Act 4 is a nostalgic visit to Shadow Moses where there are no guards (only Gekkos, which are dealt with differently) and the final act of the game only has a single room with actual guards in it. This game is best enjoyed if you care about the story of the Metal Gear universe and wraps it up satisfyingly, but that also means that there's not much meat on the bone on a replay.

Personally, while I am bothered by this to a degree and prefer having a focus on gameplay, I think what gameplay there is more than makes up for it. The game had the unbelievably hard task of delivering a satisfying finale to the grander MGS story, and it did so successfully. In my 0 kills 0 alerts 0 continues run, I skipped every single cutscene (since I know the story already) and finished the game in about 5 hours. A good chunk of the game is cutscenes, but you can still absolutely find enjoyment in it regardless.

Crazy amount of detail
Yes, Metal Gear games *always* have crazy amount of detail, a truckload of easter eggs, small little secrets, cool items and things to try on subsequent playthroughs, but this game really takes the cake. Something tells me that, by making the game as short as it is, they REALLY outdid themselves here in terms of depth to the environments and secrets you can find. Everyone knows about making the cute boss girls dance with your iPod by playing J-Pop, but less people know that you can spot The Sorrow (from MGS3) in a cutscene, that you can electrocute a Gekko in Act 4 by reactivating Shadow Moses' electric floor that Snake disabled years earlier, or that you can defeat Crying Wolf in less than 5 seconds with the Solar Gun. This game is worth replaying a ton times over - which you could argue mitigates the lack of gameplay sections somewhat, as you replay them with new gear and new items every time.

How is the PC port?
MGS 4 manages to be the best port a Metal Gear game has ever received. This game is gorgeous on PC and plays very smoothly. I haven't noticed a single performance issue in my playthroughs of the game. It's a solid 60 FPS on my aging NVIDIA RTX 3060 - that's damn good, and not the quality I expected after MC Vol 1's rocky launch. They nailed it perfectly.

Additionally, the mouse controls enhance the gameplay to a degree I didn't expect. I didn't think they would add mouse aiming... but they did! And its absolutely fantastic. I managed to do a 0 Kills, 0 Alerts, 0 Continues run and its safe to say that perfectly headshotting everyone with the MK.22 was made muchhhh easier thanks to the amazing mouse controls. Mouse and keyboard add precision that the game's original PS3 release didn't offer, and make fighting the bosses and taking people out from afar a real joy, its seriously addicting. Expect MGS V TPP levels of polish here.

Would I recommend it?
This is a must-have for every fan of the series. A perfect port and a fun, if flawed, finale of the story. The gameplay is amazing, even if there's not enough of it in this title compared to the other games in the series, you still absolutely have to check this one out if you haven't yet. I've played both games on their original hardware, again via emulation, and now on this PC port. The games themselves are still great, but the ports have some rough edges and glitches. For example, the song "Here's to You" doesn't play during the MGS4 ending credits. Some cutscene audio also cuts out for a second before coming back, and a few cutscenes render at a noticeably lower resolution than the rest of the game.

Would’ve loved proper high framerate support, but even so, this is a much nicer experience than the unstable PS3 version. After almost two decades, finally getting to play MGS4 on PC like this is great.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAh, MGS4, finally sprung from PS3 jail and free from the RPCS3 jank. This was, and still is, an incredible game. I remember going to the midnight release for this game when it launched and being absolutely enthralled with it once I finally got it home and popped it in my PS3. This game is truly an excellent and respectful way to handle the end of a legendary character's story that frankly many IP's should study.

At time of release and even still to this day, MGS4 really represents one of the smoothest and purest Metal Gear experiences one can have. It maintains the peak "old" Metal Gear staples introduced in MGS-MGS3 while introducing modernized and fleshed out shooting mechanics which only added to the gameplay. The inclusion of the OctoCamo system was an excellent standout and a great evolution from the camo system introduced in MGS3. While the OctoCamo system adapts to your surroundings, it is by no means a game breaking feature. Enemies still can and will spot you if you don't pay attention to your camo index and placement. This game provides an excellent story and challenge that truly holds up as well today as it did back in the day.

It was excellent to play this game on my desktop after all these years and can report that it worked well on my rig with zero issues. Despite the rocky release of the first Master Collection entries a while back, Konami seems to have figured it out with this one. Also, if you can, try to play with a PlayStation controller. This game retains the iconic SixAxis features from the original release (clearing OctoCamo, shaking the Mantis/Sorrow doll, etc.) and really replicates the feel of the game as it was.

So, do I recommend this game? Yes, I wholeheartedly do. I enjoyed the game in 2026 just as much as I did 18 years ago. This is one of my favorite MGS games and honestly a benchmark in long-term storytelling and continuity that I use as a benchmark when judging other stories. This game is a must play if you have played the prior MGS games and want to see how Solid Snake's saga concludes and the story wraps itself up. Do I recommend it to people who haven't played an MGS game? This is tough because yes, the game is going to be one of the most accessible and easy to play for the younger audiences but they will be missing MANY important story beats and the nuance to understand the big picture of this series. Put plainly, you will get a great gameplay experience but rob yourself of the excellent story and payoff that one cultivates by experiencing the rest of the story. I'd honestly say play the other games (like actually play them, don't be a tourist and "play" your games on Youtube) before treating yourself to this one for the best possible experience.

Also, it would have been REALLY funny if they added achievements to this game for not skipping a single cutscene/Codec call and for skipping EVERY cutscene/Codec call. This would have been really funny and self-aware due to the whole reputation that Kojima games and MGS4 have regarding long cutscenes.

TLDR: Masterpiece game that concludes an epic saga in a way that other franchises and IP's wish they could. 10/10 excellent game, thank you Mr. Kojimbo. Absolute cinema.\t\t\t\t\t

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a very dumb and self indulgent game that can barely hold the weight of its sequel baggage. When I first played it on the PlayStation 3, I hated it.

Now, many years later, I mellowed out a bit. I can now see that this game loves its characters and their legacies, and it loves the fans. It wanted to give the series the greatest and most dramatic sendoff it could, and if you just allow it to be a bit stupid and contrived at times, and embrace the rule of cool, it will work.

The biggest obstacle to taking this game seriously is that the voice acting and writing is more "anime" than it has ever been before or after, and the cutscene motion capture animations and pacing are over-acted and awkwardly stilted. This only applies to cutscenes where people engage in dialogue, which is the majority of them, but all the action focused parts in them have great motion capture animations.

The gameplay in MGS4 was always amazing, the second best in the series after MGS3. It is a lot more focused on being a shooter with streamlined controls and menus (which is even better now with mouse aiming), while still feeling a lot like MGS3. It's highly replayable, with a huge number of guns, tactics, and features that you can experiment with. It truly shines as a stealth game on the New Game+ "The Boss Extreme" difficulty, especially if you aim to get the highest rank of "Big Boss".

I think the "brown and grey" aesthetic that was so dominant in 2008 has aged pretty well, I can certainly appreciate it more now than I did at the time. Regardless of the general colour palette, Yoji Shinkawa's art direction is as strong here as it has ever been, and it's arguably his best work. The graphics hold up well for an 18 year old console game, and they look really nice and clear at high resolutions (after applying some patches).

Overall, it's not the best that the series has to offer, but I love this game.

On the technical side, everything just works, mostly. Unlike the other ports in the MGS Master Collection series, this one actually supports high resolutions, and they work flawlessly with nothing breaking. It's also the only port in the Master Collection with serviceable mouse aiming.

Here's a list of the most glaring issues present in the port:
  • The dynamic resolution optimisation feature was left turned on, for some reason. There are ways to disable it.
  • The audio is messed up in several ways. This is partially fixed by the community.
  • Some controls are weird and can't be rebound. This can be worked around with an AutoHotkey script.
  • No support for the original PS3 controls and button prompts. This is partially fixed by the community.
  • No MSAA. There is a community patch to add it.
  • The framerate is still locked to 60 FPS. It's already great that the game can now actually reach 60 FPS consistently, but unlocking it would have been better. There are community fixes for this, but they are buggy.
  • The game is limited to 16:9 resolutions. There are community fixes for this, but currently the options are either incomplete or vibecoded slop.
  • Metal Gear Online was not ported.

Sure, the original MGS1 is probably untouchable, unreplicable, and unbeatable. Starting with MGS2, the series gradually adopts a more cynical worldview, and MGS4 in particular can be a little too on-the-nose and a little too navel-gazing with its themes (okay, a lot more than "a little," but you know). Even so, I still think its message remains remarkably relevant. On top of that, I find its story delivery genuinely entertaining, even if the pacing occasionally stumbles.

With the achievement list remaining unchanged, though, I don't know how many people in 2026 will want to beat the same game eight times, especially considering that one of those playthroughs requires you to spend well over 35 hours in a single run. I've always felt MGS4's emblem requirements were excessive and, frankly, boring.

While I enjoy the game's action, I don't think it excels as a pure stealth game. That said, I absolutely loved the game's more erratic side back then. There are no traditional patrol routes, different soldier factions are constantly shooting at each other, and you're simply trying to navigate your way through the chaos. The tranq gun is still overpowered, OctoCamo is a neat addition, and Metal Gear Mk. II (which was originally supposed to appear in MGS1) finally makes its debut here.

Even so, I never really felt (and to some extent still don't) that MGS4 consistently puts you in situations where sneaking past enemies feels like the clearly superior option. At the same time, I'd argue that mowing enemies down in MGS4 feels more intuitive, natural, and simply more fun because the controls are far more responsive than in previous entries. I don't particularly enjoy the Big Boss run (or speedrunning in general) in this game either, though that's probably just me.

After MGS5, I'd have loved to see MGS4 rebuilt with larger, more open environments, enemy factions that can fight each other without spawning infinitely, and a further expanded war economy and psyche system. That's why MGS4 has always been the entry I most wanted to see remade. Whether that'll ever happen, who knows.\t\t\t\t\t

It feels surreal to be writing these words 18 years after the release of my favorite game, and what I consider the greatest entry in the Metal Gear series.

For years, I truly believed I would never play this masterpiece anywhere other than the PS3. Back then, the idea of seeing it on PS4 or PC felt impossible.

Now, all of that is in the past...

Today, MGS4 is finally accessible on PC and modern platforms without having to deal with PS3 limitations, whether it was the audio issues, controller issues, inconsistent performance, or everything else that came with it.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has always been more than just a game to me. It's a collection of unforgettable memories and a story that will always have a special place in my heart.

\n\t\t\t\t\tMetal Gear Solid 4 is a game that I don't think I could ever definitively call "good" or "bad". It's full of bad things, to be sure; the game is unabashedly more cutscene than game, and said cutscenes are usually a fever dream of Kojima at his most unhinged. For every good decision it makes there's at least one mediocre one to go with it, and the majority of the narrative is just desperately retconning as many things as it takes to forcefully tie everything together at the last second. It's well known that Kojima never wanted to make a direct sequel to MGS2, with 2 ending somewhat intentionally with a bunch of lingering plot threads all coming to dead ends at once, and in that regard it's easy to read the authorial intent here as half love for the series and half spite for having to continue it. MGS4 is both a celebration of the Metal Gear series's beloved history, and an unsubtle message about how not everything needs to continue long beyond its years just because people think they want it to, and watching it try to reconcile both of those ideas turns it into something that, good or bad, just kind of has to be seen.

It's difficult to say much more than that, because so much of the game is narrative that most of the things I could mention would be spoilers. But to dig into the gameplay for bit, there are a lot of elements that at worst I wish were used a lot more. The early chapters flip the usual idea of MGS stealth on its head by having you sneak through what is already an active warzone, and I've always thought those parts were really fun, especially because of how you can choose to support the local militia in their fight and befriend them so that they won't be alerted by your presence. It makes the conflict feel a lot more alive than what we would later get from MGSV, and I'm still sad they didn't implement it there. There are still lots of little secrets and details as well, if not as many as usual for some reason (in terms of gameplay I think MGS3 is vastly better in every way, and as far as I'm aware that's far from a hot take), and it has all kinds of fun toys to unlock by replaying the game over and over, which is worth doing anyways since this game is like 3 hours long if you skip all the cutscenes. But its gameplay is also very front-loaded, and the later acts basically amount to one short gameplay concept and one or two boss fights each. It's rarely a boring game, but I've always felt like it just lacked the same kind of spark that the others before it had, which admittedly is fitting given its theme.

The thing that makes me unable to fault this game for its crippling flaws, though, is that the whole thing feels so intentional in the same way that MGS2 was a very metatextual game. With every lengthy exposition cutscene you can practically feel Kojima going out of his way to wrap up every possible loose end whether it makes sense or not just to make sure that no MGS game could possibly come after it in the timeline (ignoring Rising, which was originally supposed to be a prequel to 4), and along the way it all piles up into a big, glorious would-be send-off for one of the best series in gaming. Even at its dumbest, it can still manage to make you feel all sorts of emotions. It offers a kind of fanfare and spectacle that I think has been lost to time, like the big blockbuster games that used to bring crowds to Gamestop like Halo 3. And I think that's the only real metric I can judge it by; MGS4 is a game that surpasses ideas of quality and exists simultaneously at both extremes, a game that is just magnificently stupid and completely earnest about it. And I absolutely love it for that, if nothing else.

But what about the port? Surprisingly, it seems great on my end. It runs totally smooth, looks as good as it could, plays great on both a gamepad and a mouse and keyboard, and goes out of its way to include everything as it should be (except MGO2, rip). You can even watch the "Old Snake smoking while the game spends an hour installing to your PS3" video like god intended by holding L1+R1+X or its various equivalents (i.e shift + ctrl + enter) at the initial autosave message upon launching, and supposedly a few other places as well that I forgot to test. I really couldn't ask for more than that from a game that I never dreamed of seeing on PC to begin with.\t\t\t\t\t
