\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSurvivor Challenge TD – A Simple Beginning, But What a Challenge!
I've spent around 17–18 hours playing Survivor Challenge TD, and what started as a fairly straightforward tower defence game eventually became one of the most challenging and satisfying experiences I've had with this type of game.
The game revolves around defending a single tower against increasingly difficult waves of enemies, purchasing weapons and upgrades as you go. There are different elemental abilities to experiment with, and the random selection of upgrades means that no two attempts necessarily play out the same way.
The main campaign consists of 16 rounds, which took me around 5–6 hours to complete. It's enjoyable enough, but I think it's important to understand that the campaign is really an introduction to the game's mechanics. The developer has described it as the training, with endless mode being the real challenge, and having now experienced both, I couldn't agree more.
Endless mode is where this game really came into its own for me.
What initially seemed like a simple exercise in buying stronger weapons gradually became a much deeper challenge involving resource management, careful upgrade choices and understanding how the different elements work together.
I spent another 11–12 hours trying different combinations, experimenting with strategies and repeatedly failing to survive long enough to earn that final achievement. There were times when I wondered whether it was even possible!
But the important thing is that I kept wanting to try again.
Eventually, I discovered that surviving wasn't simply about dealing as much damage as possible. Building a strong economy, knowing when to save your currency and prioritising the right defensive upgrades made an enormous difference.
After goodness knows how many attempts, I finally survived for 47 minutes and 55 seconds, unlocked all eight Steam achievements and reached fifth place on the leaderboard. I can't begin to describe how satisfying that felt after so many failed attempts!
That's not to say everything is perfect.
The random upgrade selection can be frustrating, particularly when you're trying to put together a specific build and the upgrades you need simply refuse to appear. Some attempts can feel almost doomed before they've properly begun.
My biggest technical criticism concerns the later stages of endless mode. Once the enemy numbers become enormous, the sheer amount happening on screen can cause serious performance problems. During my longest attempt, the game slowed dramatically and was almost freezing at times, despite my having a reasonably capable gaming PC. This is certainly an area where further optimisation would be welcome.
The presentation and interface are also fairly basic, so anyone expecting a particularly elaborate tower defence game might initially find it a little underwhelming.
However, I think it would be a mistake to judge Survivor Challenge TD solely on its appearance or the length of its campaign. For me, the real enjoyment came from experimenting, learning from my failures and gradually understanding what was needed to survive just a little longer.
I won't pretend every attempt was enjoyable. Some were downright frustrating! But I never felt that I'd completely exhausted the challenge, and that determination to improve kept bringing me back.
Survivor Challenge TD won't suit everybody. If you prefer a long campaign with lots of different maps and objectives, this probably isn't what you're looking for. But if you enjoy tower defence games built around upgrades, experimentation, resource management and testing how far you can push a build, there's a lot to enjoy here.
