I’ve wanted a proper Avatar fighting game for years, and this is honestly everything I was hoping for. The first thing that stood out to me was how different each character feels. Not only does the game lack basic functionalities such as proper keybinding and proper matchmaking, but the game can also be discontinued for any reason, and you don't get refunded for it. This is a game with offline functionality, and they're allowed to get rid of it for any reason at all? Even worse:

I never watched any guides for my guy (I am playing Ozai) and its been a LONG time since I played an anime fighter
Gotta say, not knowing how to play, the game FEELS good, I am getting nostalgic of prime GG strive days and my OG anime fighter BlazBlue Chronophantasma, I didnt even look at a command list, I just went in and pressed some buttons, and everything just makes sense, the movement feels fast and reactive, the momentum carries into movement (If you played Nagoriyuki in strive, Ozai has a similar move to Fukyo, so you can dash then jump to get a super long jump, or slide around into a grab, etc) ALL the moves FEEL so good, unlike a complaint I heard about MK1 where powered people stand around punching and kicking like any other person could, the roster actually uses what they should be using, Ozai out here is blasting fire with every strike (and when I finally read the command list, I want to start using some lightning) I fought a toph who put up walls and suplexed me off a self made plateau, I fought an azula and a zuko who both had their unique gimmicks, from Azula's blue fire traps to Zuko's blue spirit sword. It feels GOOD, and honestly I am not regretting buying this day 1, I cant wait to play Iroh when he comes out!
(Few other comments, performance was good with 0 lag, the game looks a little unpolished with quick transitions that feel choppy but thats UI and menu stuff for a game charging me only 30 dollars, the GAMEPLAY is excellent and THAT is what I care about, the characters are great, most of the voice acting is superb, and the online netcode felt amazing)\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

- training is missing some simple QoL features such as fast reset
- Lobbies are limited to only 2 people
- no replays
- a ton of just general bugs littered throughout
I know this game is only $30 and that's great, but this is a fighting game released in 2026 with so much other competition that they can't afford to miss any of these basic/key features. The devs have said that they're working on fixing these issues but for the time being I would rather play something else like Blazblue instead of waiting for them to fix everything. Maybe once the game is polished and fixed I'll come back and change my review.

speaking as a pretty seasoned fighting game player:
there is no ranked mode and no keyboard support, both of which have been standard issue for fighting games for years at this point. lobbies are incredibly barebones and don't allow you to spectate matches, which means online community tournaments are DOA. from the characters i've played, ozai feels blatantly unfinished with notably poor animations and apparently avatar aang and nightmare korra are in the same boat. there was also a lot of talk about the tutorials being very in-depth for new players, but unless i'm missing something it weirdly does not explain a handful of system mechanics. i would not have known about the guard reversal mechanic if i hadn't checked my buttons because the basic tutorial does not mention it, and there is an entire tab of the command list dedicated to "critical hits" which i assume is sort of like a krushing blow in mk11 but have no idea how to use because, again, as far as i can tell the tutorial does not explain this. there's a lot of combo trials and such, but i'm a lot less concerned with that than just understanding the core mechanics of the game without having to do my homework on youtube. did i just miss the part of the tutorial that goes over these things? this is a genuine question

I played the weekend beta and fell in love with it and I thought the full package of the game would seal the deal as my favorite fighting game of the year. But this game NEEDS at minimum 3 or so months of polish before it came out (The extreme last minute delay with Xbox should have been a big warning) No Rank mode, and from what I can tell no skill based matchmaking on default online mode. There are bugs with and very questionable decisions with the current training mode (Why is the select button changing the icons instead of resetting the trial??) some trials don't work like Zuko. Ozai does not animate at all which is signs of being very rushed, and other things are not explained at all within the command list of certain characters. I hope they are able to fix this game quickly as fighting games can die extremely quick once negative word of mouth begins to spread and since this was already a low budget fighter it's already in an uphill struggle.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Some combo trials feel inconsistent at best. Each one gives you a demo, followed by a Breakdown mode that scores every input. When the inputs were actually shown clearly, or I managed to work out what the game wanted, I was regularly scoring between 90 and 100 percent. Then the full trial would fail at the exact same link without telling me why. Maybe there is some hidden timing requirement, but if the teaching tool says I am doing it correctly and the trial rejects it, something is not working. Either the trial is bugged or Breakdown is failing to teach what the trial actually expects.
There is a basic auto-combo, but that is not the same as a proper beginner-friendly control scheme. Street Fighter 6 has Modern Controls for simplified specials and assisted combos, plus offline Dynamic Controls for friends, children, or complete newcomers who just want to press buttons and have fun. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising also offers simplified inputs and even has a free edition. Avatar gives you one canned string, then expects you to learn everything else the old-fashioned way.
Depth is not the problem. A fighting game can have deep combat and a high skill ceiling while still giving casual players a decent way in. Street Fighter 6 proves that. Here, reaching that depth means dealing with unclear feedback, inconsistent trials, motion inputs, cancels, support extensions, and a lot of time in training mode.
The casual content is just as thin. Story, Arcade, AI battles, Versus, Training, Combo Trials, and a gallery. Calling that a “wealth of modes” is generous. It is the baseline menu I expect a fighting game to have. Story and Arcade do not even have a difficulty selector, so you cannot turn the AI down while learning or raise it once it becomes too easy. That is such a basic option that its absence is honestly ridiculous.
The roster does not make the package feel much bigger either. There are only 12 playable characters. Each fighter does get three support choices, although “support” is a misleading name. They are closer to character-specific modifiers that improve or alter parts of the fighter’s existing moveset. Aang’s choices, for example, can improve his Air Scooter movement, enhance his glider, or let normal attacks cancel into Flow attacks. That adds some worthwhile variation, but it does not make those supports playable characters. For a franchise spanning The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and the wider Avatar universe, 12 actual fighters still feels light.
€28.99 is not some outrageous asking price, especially for a fighting game. Someone who mainly wants ranked matches and training mode may get their money’s worth. I just do not think it is good value for everyone else. For the same price, or less, there are fighters with larger rosters, better tools for beginners, and far more to do once you are tired of grinding regular matches.
Avatar Legends looks fantastic, and the combat may be genuinely deep. But between the 12-character roster, inconsistent combo trials, weak onboarding, and thin selection of modes, it is difficult to recommend at €28.99 unless you already enjoy spending hours in training mode.

How hard can it be to add the same remapping feature you have in every other key, for 4 (four) more buttons??

Even after doing this you will notice that SPACE is hardcoded to be 'accept' in menus, so now your space key does both UP and 'accept', meaning you need to position yourself below the option you want to actually choose. This is even worse in the character select where you need to do SPACE->ESC->SPACE->ESC... to go multiple spaces up.
Another slightly less important criticism, is that in trial mode the combo notation UI is huge and you can't tell what a combo is at a glance without rewatching the demo or going through the breakdown. Also, the change notation is the same as the reset key in trial mode, just tap instead of held, which results in accidental notation changes when trying to reset. Make them separate keys or have the notation change in menus only. Additionally, why is there a 'hold to reset' key in trial mode, but in training mode this key does not work and you must hold all 4 attack buttons?
I wish there were also wifi indicators, and that you couldn't see your opponent's character until you accept the match.

The movement and fighting is very fluid and smooth with lots of different combos and diversity. It can sometimes be a little spammy atleast for new players, but once you learn how to actually play you start to have alot of fun hitting combos and having close matches.
The story mode is kinda "meh" but I wouldn't say it's bad, probably more so there to help you learn the game and give you something to do. Online play other than everyone using Zuko or Toph it is very good and refreshing. Avatar Legends is probably the best Avatar game out there now and is alot of fun, and I can't wait to see what they add in the future like maybe Iroh or Suki as playable characters?\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Skill based matchmakingg doesn't seem to exist
Invincible VS curse: You can see opponent before match, people duck, ragequits already
Ozai is not animated, actual frames missing, looks real stiff because of these even though he's mechanically one of the more interesting characters
Nightmare Korra isn't finished, even the character itself does not reflect the winscreen pose
You can't remap controls so good luck if you're not on a controller/leverless

Gameplay is genuinely mad fun and all characters are unique.
The bad:
Audio cuts out in combo trials
Some combo trials glitch out, demonstration won't even connect
Trial annotations are wrong/missing inputs
Ranked Mode does NOT exist, guess they forgot they dropped that trailer yesterday that clearly said " RANKED MATCHES"
Skill based matchmakingg doesn't seem to exist
Invincible VS curse: You can see opponent before match, people duck, ragequits already
Ozai is not animated, actual frames missing, looks real stiff because of these even though he's mechanically one of the more interesting characters
Nightmare Korra isn't finished, even the character itself does not reflect the winscreen pose
You can't remap controls so good luck if you're not on a controller/leverless
