There would be nights where I couldn't fall asleep, so to pass the time I would lay in bed imagining what a character's move-set would be in an Avatar fighting game.
Now this game exists... and I can't believe how GOOD this game is. Combat is fast, movement is freeing, offense is powerful, defense is equally strong, characters are incredibly diverse even among their own supports, animation is great, fanservice and easter eggs are everywhere. This is a game made with a deep love for fighting games and a deep love for the Avatar franchise as a whole. I've already put 100 hours into the game and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

Characters doesn't have universal answers, but have all needed specific answers to any situation so far, and usually when players of equal skill and knowledge fights each other, one who adapt better comes out on top. Tl;dr: ITS PEAK
The game does not sacrifice depth for the sake of being beginner friendly, but it still has a basic auto combo system that doesn't not step on the toes of the larger combo structure. There are easy and hard characters and even the easy characters have a complex ceiling to reach for. There are not a ton of buttons (4 in total) but I do think the macros for the button combinations are pretty important depending on your character. It has no shoryuken inputs (➔⬇↘) which tbh even as a FG purist I'm happy to see. I've always had trouble landing them depending on what pad i'm using and I'm sure for a brand new player is an unnecessary complexity that doesn't add anything. the difficulty in this game comes from converting hits and manual timings and engaging with the extremely deep defensive mechanics. trust me, i've never once said damn I wish this game was harder lol.
The flow system is their "global mechanic" similar to the drive system in street fighter 6 and it is really what ties this entire game together but not in a homogenous way. flow parry is your catch all block mechanic and that's only one use for the flow button. every char has different flow moves, dodges/rolls/counters etc and then a unique movement option tied to the flow button. so it reaches into both offense and defense on an integral level that makes it as important as the health bar itself.
The characters are all flushed out and uniquely interesting, and once a character clicks with you I can imagine you are "maining" them for the foreseeable future. I have DREAMS about Zaheer combos/conversions/punishes, it's actually unbelievable that I have almost 60 hours (30 spread out from the various betas) and almost the entire 60 is just me playing one character. that is not typical behavior for me at all. maybe zaheer is just the goat character design (he is) and the other chars don't have this kind of appeal but I seriously doubt it.
The art is BEAUTIFUL. it's actually so offensive that people were saying it looks like a flash game, like the amount of beautiful hand drawn frames is staggering. the fact that a handful of characters were released in an unfinished state really put into perspective how good everyone else looks. the supports/stages all look amazing too. like they were lifted STRAIGHT out of the show. Ozai got a lot of frames added to his animations and it's extremely noticeable, and I imagine avatar aang and nightmare korra will look great once they are fully flushed out visually.
The netcode is top tier, though I think characters with insane burst speed (azula air dash stands out far above the rest) the rollback interacts really poorly with that at anything above 70-80 ping. but honestly it's really the only thing that stands out. adjustable frame delay means you can adjust it based on what feels good to you.
The ranked mode is good, but it launched without it and honestly I think that was good for the game. I was just running first to 20's with strangers in casuals and taking my time experimenting and learning matchups organically. if i was trapped in a first to three simulator when I started playing a lot I wouldn't have learned as much.
Balance is great. and the replay takeover they added has really helped me "get gud" instead of complaining. the fact that my opinion of the tier list is changing daily speaks to how deep the game is, and that's thanks a lot to the freedom of movement and defensive options. that being said NERF KORRA
The story mode is better than I expected, but my expectations were on the ground tbh. The pvp is the main course, and I think getting this game expecting the opposite you will be somewhat disappointed.
It's def true that the game released in a somewhat unfinished state, but that's very obviously not the fault of the devs. Paramount did their best to ♥♥♥♥ over the avatar IP again but they failed simply because this game is just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. the first patch did a lot for my faith that this game will have a rich future.

The character designs are faithful to the show and are extremely expressive and show their unique personalities every second they're on screen! \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tBought this game for a friend too. Played 90 hours so far, had a lot of fun, also have a lot of issues. This would really be more like a mixed review if Steam had those. It's a hand-drawn Avatar fighting game, which was one of my dream games and I couldn't be happier it exists now.
So, the problems:
First, ranked as a system sucks. My main is Zuko who is around ~1760 MMR and fluctuates between White and Grand Lotus, so I'm dead average. Average is bad in fighting games but I'm not *total* ass at this moment anyway, and I say that just to show that this isn't purely coming from a place of salt.
Ranked shows the opponents name and character so you can dodge all your bad matchups and rise up in the ranks. Obviously this is terrible but even worse is that there's no WiFi indicator so be prepared for some McDonald's Azulas. The devs said they're working on it but this shouldn't have been a problem in the first place and there's no reason for a huge delay in fixing it when casual already has a system that doesn't show the character.
You can also see your opponents rank, which encourages dodging people below you since you'll lose more points from a loss than you'd gain from a win were you to be defeated.
You don't have to play full sets so one-and-doneing (or two-and-doneing) is encouraged. If you feel like your opponent might have adapted and will get you next game...just leave! Sometimes I wish that I did dodge a third game...and that's totally antithetical to the learning experience that fighting games should be encouraging.
Second, ranked and casual both suck for a different issue which is that AFK PLAYERS DON'T GET KICKED FROM MATCHMAKING and neither do people who are "practicing combos" -_- so you can sit there cycling through a lot of match notifications that will just time out for a while and it's a huge waste of time. The issue with seeing player rank and character compounds with this one so your time is wasted even more.
Third, grab macro includes flow. Why. Whyyyyyyyyyyyy. Make grab its own button. Flow should never come out upon hitting the grab button, and yet there's scenarios in which it does.
Lastly, the year 1 pass for characters is already available for purchase (through the deluxe edition) while there are still 2 UNFINISHED CHARACTERS lurking in the game lmao. The release date on the store page for the game proper has been changed to September 10th (it was available for purchase before that) and they're still just how they were beforehand.
Okay stuff that's more subjective below here:
Some of these characters as well as individual moves could use some design tweaks IMO. Instead of turning this into a saltfest, I'll just say a few.
Nightmare Korra forcing a guessing game between her DP, grab, jab, and block with every teleport is technically not in her favor, but also not what I would call "fun to fight" or "worth existing."
As for hitboxes, Korra herself has a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ massive hitbox on her 5A which anti-airs and nobody knows why.
Zuko has different hitboxes for his 6D-B move depending on which way he's facing, and there is no visual difference in the move's fire effect to communicate this because ♥♥♥♥ you.
Visual communication in general could be a lot better. Not the art really, it looks fantastic. There's an 8f window of grab immunity on wakeup/block which isn't shown during normal gameplay, it feels pretty long and the lack of a visual makes playing strike/throw a little more difficult unnecessarily.
Certain moves that are able to cross up on the opponent visually don't match up to that property, mainly Aang's j2c. The move will visually be arced towards where your character is blocking but hit their back instead if the Aang is sufficiently spaced.
I'm going to keep playing it because it's still kinda fun and I've wanted a game like this for a long time, but the launch as well as the lingering issues are quite disappointing.

Players brand new to fighters will struggle a little bit competing because of how important flow cancels are, but if you want to put the effort in it will still be a fun (maybe really fun) journey. Players that want the easiest time hitting a comfortable skill floor should pick Korra/Toph, and players that want a long rewarding mastery journey with lots of tech should consider Zuko/Katara/Sokka.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
