Finally winning the first time is celebration enough, winning again with a completely different setup is what makes it truly addictive, especially if you get to successfully turn a struggling strategy mid-game into a wildly successful one because a particular joker pops up that fits it like a glove.

There's a lot to love here : the concept is awesome, the presentation is cool, everything snaps and clicks in a very satisfying way, it runs super smooth on low-end computers...
To me the issue is that Balatro fails as a roguelike deckbuilder. Every run goes as follows : in the first 3 rounds you'll pick a comp to play depending on the first jokers or tarot cards you find. Once you have picked your path, you're all in. Cross your fingers and hope to find the cards you want.
You still have agency, but there's a pretty clear better option at every intersection. Hybrid comps don't really work, mid-game transitions are super rare and usually bad choices. There is only one path and it's forward.
Roguelike deckbuilders are at their best when they keep you on the edge until the end. When every new card or random event is an opportunity to contemplate adjusting your course or even risking a 180. When they stir creative thinking, innovative comps, when they push you to unexplored paths.

If I could describe Balatro in a few words it would be: Dopamine Machine. Everything in this game is seemingly designed to be as satisfying as possible, while the gameplay itself is also on another level. It goes beyond just a deck building game and into a world of (not to sound cheesy) infinite possibilities. This is my all-time favorite game that I can dedicate five hour sessions or casual in-class gaming to. I find it hard to put into words how incredible this game is, so I will say this: If you are contemplating buying this game, stop. Just buy it. But if you like card games and roguelikes (roguelites? rogue-lights? whatever, you know the type), this game is absolute crack. Every run somehow turns into “okay, just one more” until suddenly it’s 2 AM and you’re calculating poker hands like a sleep-deprived casino wizard.
It’s simple enough to pick up fast, but once the synergies start stacking, your brain turns into a dopamine-powered spreadsheet. And somehow a game about poker hands becomes one of the most satisfying strategy games out there.

This was without a doubt the best overall gaming experience of my life. Never I have felt so empy, yet so full, after finishing a game. What I felt in this journey, from the beginning to the end, is too hard to describe for me.
Of course t's not a triple A game, so it has some little flaws. I'll tell you what in the end bothered me the most: you can only play it once. Yet, it's not actually a flaw, it's how games like this work. It's how life works. And if you loved the experience as much as I and my friends who played it did, it will feel bad for days, probably weeks, maybe even more. I still think about it after almost a month.
There will of course be some people that will hate its mechanics or won't really enjoy the gameplay. You are constantly facing problems, sometimes you will feel like you are making so much progress, sometimes it will feel like you won't ever understand how to reach your goal. I think that's part of what makes the experience so beautiful, yet I am also sure many won't agree with me. It's not a game for everyone, no videogame is.
