Balatro might genuinely be one of the best games ever made. But what exactly makes this game so damn good?
Before I actually try to answer that, there is one thing I want to get out of the way. You do not need to know anything about poker to play Balatro. In fact, that was probably the first thing that came to my mind when I first saw the game. I thought I would need to understand poker hands, strategies and all the rules that come with it.
You really don't.
Let me give you a very simplified idea of what Balatro actually is.
You start with a deck of cards and your goal is pretty simple. You play different combinations of cards to reach a certain score. Reach the required score and you beat the round. Then you move on to the next one. You keep doing this until you reach Ante 8, which you can basically think of as the final level.
Sounds simple enough.
But this is where things start getting interesting.
Alongside your normal playing cards, Balatro has around 150 unique Joker cards. Every Joker can completely change how you approach the game. They have different rarities, different abilities and even different variations of the same Joker.
Then you have Tarot cards, Planet cards, Spectral cards and a whole bunch of other things that interact with your deck in different ways.
But honestly, you don't even need to understand all of that right now.
The important part is this.
You are constantly building a combination of cards and abilities that lets you score more and more points.
And this is where Balatro's presentation comes in and absolutely nails it.
The game has this incredible ability to make you feel like a genius.
When you first start playing, getting a decent score feels like an achievement. Then you slowly figure out which cards work together, which Jokers complement your build and how you can manipulate your deck to squeeze more points out of every hand.
Suddenly the numbers start going up.
Then they go up even more.
Eventually you are scoring thousands, then millions, then numbers so ridiculous that you stop thinking about the actual value and start wondering how the hell the game is even displaying it.
And the genius part is that Balatro doesn't just show you those numbers.
It makes you feel them.
When you hit a massive score, the animations kick in. The numbers explode upward. The sounds become more satisfying.
Every little interaction has this almost ASMR-like quality to it.
Playing cards, placing them down, triggering effects, opening packs, flipping Tarot cards and watching your carefully built combination activate all have this incredibly tactile feeling to them.
Then there is the music and the artwork.
The entire visual style is simple but incredibly distinctive. The music creates this strange atmosphere that feels somewhere between a casino and a late night fever dream.
You get the excitement and unpredictability of gambling, but you are not really gambling anymore.
You are the one in control.
You are the guy sitting at the table who somehow figured out how to manipulate the entire system and turn a normal deck of cards into an absolutely ridiculous scoring machine.
And that feeling is probably one of the biggest reasons Balatro is so addictive.
Balatro constantly gives you the feeling that you have figured something out.
That you're getting better.
That the ridiculous score on the screen happened because of something you understood and built yourself.

It also can be stepped away from and you don't need to worry about having something go wrong. You can pop in for a quick game or pour in a couple of hours if you'd like.

I'd love this game if I was able to earn/gain something for the time spent during each run other than my own personal experience.
"Permanent" upgrades for example are only for that run.
I purchased this on sale for £10.23 I believe it's worth about £3. I still won't refund. It's my fault for not doing more research but there are far better games out there at that price tag.
