Balatro might genuinely be one of the best games ever made. But what exactly makes this game so damn good?
Before I actually try to answer that, there is one thing I want to get out of the way. You do not need to know anything about poker to play Balatro. In fact, that was probably the first thing that came to my mind when I first saw the game. I thought I would need to understand poker hands, strategies and all the rules that come with it.
You really don't.
Let me give you a very simplified idea of what Balatro actually is.
You start with a deck of cards and your goal is pretty simple. You play different combinations of cards to reach a certain score. Reach the required score and you beat the round. Then you move on to the next one. You keep doing this until you reach Ante 8, which you can basically think of as the final level.
Sounds simple enough.
But this is where things start getting interesting.
Alongside your normal playing cards, Balatro has around 150 unique Joker cards. Every Joker can completely change how you approach the game. They have different rarities, different abilities and even different variations of the same Joker.
Then you have Tarot cards, Planet cards, Spectral cards and a whole bunch of other things that interact with your deck in different ways.
But honestly, you don't even need to understand all of that right now.
The important part is this.
You are constantly building a combination of cards and abilities that lets you score more and more points.
And this is where Balatro's presentation comes in and absolutely nails it.
The game has this incredible ability to make you feel like a genius.
When you first start playing, getting a decent score feels like an achievement. Then you slowly figure out which cards work together, which Jokers complement your build and how you can manipulate your deck to squeeze more points out of every hand.
Suddenly the numbers start going up.
Then they go up even more.
Eventually you are scoring thousands, then millions, then numbers so ridiculous that you stop thinking about the actual value and start wondering how the hell the game is even displaying it.
And the genius part is that Balatro doesn't just show you those numbers.
It makes you feel them.
When you hit a massive score, the animations kick in. The numbers explode upward. The sounds become more satisfying.
Every little interaction has this almost ASMR-like quality to it.
Playing cards, placing them down, triggering effects, opening packs, flipping Tarot cards and watching your carefully built combination activate all have this incredibly tactile feeling to them.
Then there is the music and the artwork.
The entire visual style is simple but incredibly distinctive. The music creates this strange atmosphere that feels somewhere between a casino and a late night fever dream.
You get the excitement and unpredictability of gambling, but you are not really gambling anymore.
You are the one in control.

Balatro was honestly just a random little game I stumbled across on social media... but I have to say, it's actually a really nice game to play when you only have a bit of time to spare. At its core, Balatro is a small roguelike deck-building card game where your goal is pretty simple: score enough points to beat the pot and keep going. Sounds easy, right?
Well... it isn't.
The better your poker hand, the more points you get. You have 4 hands and 3 discards to reach your pot, so you'd better make those cards count. (at the start)
And that's where things get fun. Throughout each run, you build and adjust your deck to focus on certain hands, suits, or synergies. Suddenly, that innocent little Pair you've just played is worth an absurd amount of points because you've somehow stacked a dozen different bonuses on top of it.
Full House ×4? Yeah, that's getting somewhere. Two Aces giving you 20×2, plus another 10 because they're Red? Sure, why not.
At some point, you're no longer playing small blinds. You're just watching numbers go up and pretending you understand why.
And honestly, that's awesome. I can definitely recommend Balatro to anyone who's into roguelikes, deck-building, or card games. It even helped me understand poker hands a lot better, so maybe one day I'll finally be able to sit down at an actual poker table without having to Google what the hell a Straight is.

It turns out that you can't bring cards made out of glass to a poker table, and you also can't bring a joker card and say your hand is multiplied by 1.5x. The owner of the casino called me a "crackhead" and said I could "never come back". I assume he's just new to the game of Poker so I'll just come back another day and tell him to check this game out. You'll be BEGGING for the x-mult jokers too show up but they never do so you're just stuck there desperately trying to salvage what's left of your ruined run while the world crumbles around you at ante 5 and you're left a shell of the man you once were. Who knew one of the best rogue-likes would be the one based on poker, yet here we are.
Also I am having so much fun interacting with the game's community. For some reason, everyone I happen to see involved with this game seem to be legitimately nice, welcoming, and interesting people.

It’s the perfect game to play casually on the couch while watching tv. That is until the numbers start to go brrrr and you lock in for the run. Laughably I put in over 58 hours before I found the right combination of Jokers and suit levels to finally win my first run. The 57 hours it took me til that I was unbothered that I’d yet to complete a run try as I might. Why go so long without winning? Because the game is so simple a concept to learn yet so addictive to master it just gets its hooks into you.
