The shop system compared to the first game is worse because you can't stack the same item anymore so your stuck selling common garbage for barely anything and the trinket system form the first game is now involved in every customizable thing in the shop, the Dungeon system really sucks now because they aren't actually explorable and are a linear experience from room to room and the hardest part about all the bosses in this game is waiting out the immunity faze they they go into every quarter of their HP and the rush mode they added doesn't give any loot and is just the lols, and don't even get me started on how they removed 15 pets from the game and in return gave the player choice between 5 different guns, The player customization is completely trashed now in the first game you could have a heavy chest plate with a light helmet and medium greaves but in this game the armor is just a different sets that give you single perks. The whole goal of this game is to make as much money as possible instead of actually just exploring and clearing bosses, The Vender that would sell you potions has complete lost their purpose because Will always has Multiple potions on him and they removed all of the extra potions from due to the changes that they did else where. There is basically nothing in common with the first game, aside from a few bits of story and the fact that you still have a shop to run.
In terms of gameplay, we go from a 2D dungeon crawler to a 3D roguelike with a boon/curse system similar to Hades. Unlike the first game, you don't discover the map as you progress or with the help of a potion. No, everything is revealed from the start, and it's up to us to choose which path to take.
However, unlike Hades, the interactions between the different buffs are almost completely nonexistent, if not entirely absent. In Hades, the interactions between different elements created a huge variety of viable builds. Here, however, you will often find yourself taking the same element 99% of the time simply because it's the only one that remains viable for the rest of the dungeon.
When it comes to equipment, we're a long way from the upgrade system in Moonlighter 1. Once again, in a way similar to Hades, you'll be choosing weapons/armor with gimmicks such as "protects against one boss hit." This means that the armor is basically useless until you reach the boss. The same goes for the other pieces of equipment, which are mostly focused on offering different playstyles rather than actual upgrades like we had in the first game.
So we're a long way from the +10 health, +5 armor upgrades from the first Moonlighter, as well as the gradual progression that made the dungeons easier as you progressed.
The difficulty therefore NEVER changes. Your progression doesn't get faster and faster like it could in the first game.
There is no potion crafting either. You have a total of "1 potion" for the entire dungeon, and the only way to increase the number of potions is through upgrades that are extremely expensive and require resources from mobs/bosses. At the moment, the maximum is only around 5–6 potions per dungeon.
The shop has also been radically changed. Here, you don't stack resources that you've farmed. Instead, you "fuse" resources together under certain conditions and with specific buffs/debuffs. Say goodbye to farming dungeons like in the first game. Here, every farming session becomes a puzzle where you have to figure out how and whether a particular relic can be placed in your bag. These relics can only be obtained from chests, and those chests are only available in certain rooms, not everywhere.
I fully completed the first game and downloaded the demo for the second one, then decided to buy it after playing for about two hours.
Honestly, I really regret this purchase, and I don't think I will ever buy another game from this developer again. I never expected the changes to be this drastic, or for this game to have so little in common with its predecessor.
Now that I'm unable to get a refund, I'll simply go for 100% completion. But as I said before, I will never buy another game from this developer again.

I love the roguelike mechanics and the story. I'm still fairly early in but I cant wait to learn more about the game and discover more things. if you liked the first game, you'll like this one too!

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tEnjoying the 2nd Moonlighter far more than the first. The concepts are the same but the execution of the combat is MUCH improved (ML1 combat felt very janky in comparison). The inventory management minigame is also much improved. I love storing up various items of a specific category, waiting for that one rare or epic to appear, and then creating a huge chain reaction that skyrockets their value.

If you are familiar with the first part you already know about the combination of: roguelike + shop (merchant) mechanic. Compared to the 1st part, it's so much better. Instead of constantly throwing away the less valuable items, you combine/strategize your inventory by using the so called 'curses' to increase the value of other items. Moreover, you dont need to tediously grind for ressources in an barely changing dungeon. Because...
every run is different, different perks, different weapons - the playstyle you choose for your next run and the randomized dungeon perks you can go for (every time you go into a dungeon the map layout is different but not hidden and luck based to go through) offer a lot of versatility. 18 hours in, so far and...
I think the game does pretty well balancing with the combat perks you can have, and there is no "always try to fish for this one combination". Although with every roguelike obv there are better and worse perks.
The balance between making progress and the game gatekepping new stuff is very good, I think. You not only need gold but also ressources to upgruade. But, the ressources you get inside the dungeon dont take up inventory space like in the 1st game (I hated that personally). Moreover, you unlock a lot of different NPCs and ways to improve your gear for runs.
Performance-wise I didnt have any issues (well 2-3 laggs in 17 runs while playing on a non-gaming laptop, I wouldnt count that). I did encounter a major bug though, once in 17 runs but still: half my input keys were bugged. It occured inside the dungeon after looting a chest I was not able to go to the next stage (y button on controller was bugged, keyboard input also didnt work). Luckily I was able to teleport back with the pendant, but that didnt solve the problem. Since my controls were still bugged outside the dungeon. I was unable to manually close the game via the ingame menue - I had to ALT+F4 and pray for a quick safe. Both attack buttons + the pendant still worked, every other button was bugged if I remember correctly. Hope, this helps to fix the issue.
Overall, great game - best solo roguelike I've played so far. Try the demo! If you like the game mechanics - trust me, the game won't get tedious.

I think the game does pretty well balancing with the combat perks you can have, and there is no "always try to fish for this one combination". Although with every roguelike obv there are better and worse perks.
The balance between making progress and the game gatekepping new stuff is very good, I think. You not only need gold but also ressources to upgruade. But, the ressources you get inside the dungeon dont take up inventory space like in the 1st game (I hated that personally). Moreover, you unlock a lot of different NPCs and ways to improve your gear for runs.
Performance-wise I didnt have any issues (well 2-3 laggs in 17 runs while playing on a non-gaming laptop, I wouldnt count that). I did encounter a major bug though, once in 17 runs but still: half my input keys were bugged. It occured inside the dungeon after looting a chest I was not able to go to the next stage (y button on controller was bugged, keyboard input also didnt work). Luckily I was able to teleport back with the pendant, but that didnt solve the problem. Since my controls were still bugged outside the dungeon. I was unable to manually close the game via the ingame menue - I had to ALT+F4 and pray for a quick safe. Both attack buttons + the pendant still worked, every other button was bugged if I remember correctly. Hope, this helps to fix the issue.
Overall, great game - best solo roguelike I've played so far. Try the demo! If you like the game mechanics - trust me, the game won't get tedious.

I've been hesitant to recommend this game because it is still quite messy, and I will state its problems, but I have also greatly enjoyed playing it and I hope that some of the underdeveloped bits will be fixed in time, or as it was with Hades 2 in the 1.0 release. The graphic update is interesting coming from top down 2D ML1. I feel like combat is the biggest hurdle to becoming a stronger game, there is truth that the game struggles to deal with being functional as a roguelite. The item and shop management are almost entirely improved from the first game. The character interaction and references in the game keep hitting and making me laugh, and I am interested to see where the story goes in 1.0.
That said, plenty of the combat perk trees do not filter in ways that you can get perks that have mutually exclusive functions, some perks are also objectively not useful or have little to no use case, some weapons feel much more immediately useful than others, but most weapon permutations are not nearly as important as getting good perks, and while the different perk types are interesting and can be built in unexpected ways, you can also fail to get necessary perks and there are not enough of them in a run without having to forego treasure, so you end up making the same choices almost 100% of the time as far as dungeon progression, the only differences being how lucky you get for the specific stacks of perk rooms or other special rooms. The weapons themselves are also not balanced/some weapons are good on their own until you get perks while others completely depend on getting attack or special perks, and this becomes very prevalent by the end of any dungeon since the enemies get stronger the further you go. Edit: apparently there is a setting for auto-aim towards enemies, but this is not stated anywhere and despite regularly bringing it up in the server, nobody mentioned it.
They have learned some lessons from Hades, but not enough, as Hades 1 and 2 have high visibility for enemies attacking to be able to respond appropriately (you can get used to animations, but some enemy wind-up sequences are visually subtle and currently there are bugs where attack animations become invisible), as well as boon/perk filtering based on what you have. In either Hades, each run is usually survivable and can have unique builds unless you have high difficulty modifiers, getting simple bad luck is less common. In this current build, it is too common to have a build not come together, and fortunately quitting the game and restarting the night resets which perks show up, and this is much preferable to having to quit a bad run and lose time.
All the issues with combat aside, I only have a few issues with the shop, it is mostly really good. The timer for running the shop does not appear to increase sufficiently with a bigger shop and more items, and/or since you have abysmal item storage until you get more shop upgrades, somewhere in the middle level with 10 item pedestals is optimal for being able to sell a fully stocked storefront and place a full backpack's worth of inventory before closing time. The fully upgraded shop (currently) is maybe too large and the customers take too much time to traverse it, or we can store and stock so many items that it's not usually possible to sell full stock and an entire backpack in one run. Lastly, just as with combat, some shop perks and Bloblet upgrades, while cute, have little to no good use case and feel intentionally put in there as placeholders, but thankfully it is not hard to get shop rerolls.

1. Targetting feels weird especially for high precision weapons. The snapshotting helps, but it tries to be too one size fits all. Turning on combat snapping causes my gun to fix on environments like genies when I want to be focused on triggering my mark targets. Turning off combat snapping causes my aim for spears to stab wide when the aim for the weapon in a 2D space mixes with the 3D space.
2. Screen stutters. My first boot up had the camera snap and microstutter from the initial hub area. It's a small thing that was eventually fixed by modifying my local config files but yeah kind of soured the player experience.
3. The overall combat loop feels samey after a while. Don't get me wrong, the biomes, the little design decisions and mechanics do look different and feel immersive. It's just that comparing between the biomes themselves, there isn't much in them that distinguish between each other significantly. It's a bit later since 1.0 is just around the corner, but this should help temper experiences such that you are not going to face a huge challenge when you unlock a new biome. Or even change the way you play.
Now onto the good!
1. The biggest draw I feel is the degree of meta-progression. There are so many small but meaningful 'chase goals' to gun for that you can choose to your liking. Feeling like enemies hit too hard? go for more pots, higher health or dmg mit stamps. Feel confident that you can rush your playthrough? upgrade your weapons or build riskier ones. Want to up your cashflow? there is an assortment of shop perks and furniture to snowball your money chain. This helps to really customize what you want and what you can go for.
2. Weapons are easy to pick up, and have just enough to distinguish from each other play style wise. All are melee options, but maximizing dps has their own patterns which does make combat less stale once you switch them up.

Found multiple min-max breaking bugs that ruin the experience. I play a lot of rougelikes/rougelites and min-maxing is half the fun for these games. Will change my review after i play 1.0 and hope these bugs are fixed.
* Got stuck at Hidden room of Night Realm of Kalina, where the 1st gate wont open even though i killed all mobs in the 1st area (my lightning perk may have triggered this bug, it might have killed the mini boss at the end that prevented the gates from opening)
* During my endless Aeolia run. I always receive 2 chests at the end, but the left chest always provide the same choices for the gold relic. Non-Deluxe Blob Matryoshka at the top and Deluxe Ceremonial Scissors at the bottom. Quality keeps on improving but choices remained the same. I don't have a reroll anymore so that was a bummer

- for unknown reasons, the game keeps "stuttering" in between levels and even during combat. That happens on both my PC and Steam Deck
- loading times while entering/leaving the shop are weirdly long
- I play with a gamepad and I can feel lag during intense combats
I love the IP, love the soundtrack, it's charming, and I can tell there's a lot of love from the team. I wish they had more time to cook this game 'cause I believe it deserves a place amongst the great roguelites/roguelikes or whatever-rogue you want to name it. The shop not having a timer is such a nice touch, can actually sell everything I need and not hoard. Combat is really fun and smooth, some minor bug fixes hopefully full release will address (honing on spear seems to be bugged sometimes).
Overall solid 8/10 so far and with it getting its full release soon I'm excited for the future.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tabsolutely my favorite game! it combines RPGlite and shop keeper into one, i usually dont like shop keeper games but this game does it so well, the combat is very fun with 4 types of weapons and each weapon has varient that change your gameplay, the customization is also no joke, your entire shop is customizable, game is 100% worth a buy, i played a lot of different RGPlites, most have up to 10 hours of content or so, this game around 40-45 hours and im in early access, and its not just super repetitive, of course there is repetition but its different because you have aroud 3-9 different "dungeons" to go into each time, in conclusion, buy this if you want the best RGPlite you will ever play!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
