The creepy atmospheric music is phenomenal, reminds me of Thief 1 & 2, the art style is simplistic, yet strangely detailed, the gameplay is great- not too easy and not too punishing. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAs a huge fan of David Lynch and Twin Peaks, Silver Pines feels like a love letter to everything Lynch has created. It feels like the perfect blend of something he would make himself, while also reminding me of the eerie atmosphere of Silent Hill and even at times the old-school Resident Evil games.
I've spent countless days dreaming about what a Twin Peaks game would look like, and the biggest compliment I can possibly give the developers is that Silver Pines is the closest I've ever come to thinking, "This is it." Yes, even closer than Deadly Premonition, which is another game I absolutely love.
Sure, the game wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but it never feels like it's simply trying to imitate them. It constantly finds ways to carve out its own identity, and I can confidently say that Silver Pines stands on its own as something special.
Stories that make you question absolutely everything you're seeing are some of my favorite things in media, and this game does an unbelievable job of scratching that itch. I absolutely adore its unapologetic weirdness. It's not afraid to leave you without answers, and just when you think you might be getting somewhere, think again, the game throws another question your way that makes you go back to the drawing board. There's something incredibly compelling about a game that trusts the player to sit with the uncertainty rather than feel the need to explain everything.
The game also does a fantastic job of bringing all its elements together, pairing gorgeous animation and a genuinely compelling mystery with exploration that constantly makes you curious about what you'll discover next.
The town of Silver Pines itself is absolutely incredible to explore. Every corner feels like it has a story to tell, and you never quite know what you'll find behind the next door... if it opens from this side. (You know exactly what I mean.)

It is like David Lynch's Twin Peaks and Silent Hill for atmosphere and themes; it is like Resident Evil for the puzzles; It is both of those games for the combat. it is a Metroidvania at heart for the visuals and the exploration, full of parts of the game to access as soon as you find the right item and secrets to discover. The graphics are beautiful, and the style is gorgeous. It is simple without being cheap, as sometimes can happen with low-budget indies. It proves that to have a beautiful game, the first thing is to have good ideas and good writing. Buy it; it's worth every cent, and they deserve support.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Silver Pines is a game I've been following for quite some time now. As someone who's particularly enthusiastic about Twin Peaks and drawn towards every form of art that has that unique Lynchian, melancholic yet, at the same time, uplifting and unmistakably human storytelling, trying out this game and supporting the 5-person team behind it was a no-brainer.
I wish to be honest about something from the get-go: I absolutely detest metroidvanias. I hate backtracking, remembering where specific paths were that the game didn't let me tread before, and so on. But something about this game is different, and I'm not saying this because I'm biased towards everything that resembles the ethereal, macabre journey of Agent Dale Cooper.
The very first thing I noticed is the stellar art style. It shoves modern expectations of realism out the door, allowing the harrowing tale of Red Walker to be presented in an undoubtedly stylish, yet thankfully far from distracting, way. It feels like you're reading a noir comic that is the love child of Alan Wake's surrealist tale about hope and Silent Hill's raw exploration of the human condition.
The soundtrack is nothing short of divine, as much as I hate to write in theatrical terms. Silver Pines, at its core, is a story of "what could've been?" if not for the circumstances. You cannot help but sympathize with the characters who fell victim to the town's dark secret, and the OST plays a crucial role in making you invested and wondering about the possible fate of its residents.
The gameplay is... serviceable, I guess? Nothing exceptional, although it'd be foolish of me to expect a combat system that is unequivocally high-quality from a smaller indie studio. It never feels stressful in the sense of being clunky, but it does make you nervous in a way every survival horror game should strive to: limited resources, encounters that make your heart skip a beat, and so on.
If there's one reason the game deserves all the praise it gets, it's how it manages to create a perfect harmony between the smothering atmosphere of this bloodcurdling town and the sanguine theme of the narrative. You're horrified; you want it to end as soon as possible. You want to get out. Yet, you don't. Sounds contradictory, doesn't it? This duality is the reason why Wych Elm's work sits at the top of my list of the best games of the grand 2026. I'm glad I could support the developers by buying the deluxe edition, which includes the aforementioned sublime soundtrack and the artbook, if you're interested in how the game was made.

The overall visuals and presentation, the environments and atmosphere, the gameplay and level design it's all so insanely good. The best blending of genres and game influences I love that I've ever seen. Survival horror (both RE and SH schools), Prince of Persia (first and the last game, quite literally), metroidvania and healthy dose of Twin Peaks for good measure. Everything fits so well together. Great exploration, satisfying progression and resource management, amazing atmosphere, stunning art style, phenomenal sound design and game feel, compelling narrative and writing, awesome voiceover... and the game is really well made! First things first: I haven't encountered any of the optimization issues people have been complaining about. My rig is running a Ryzen 9900X3D + RTX 5080. I've had zero crashes to desktop, and the game runs perfectly.
Pros:
- Distinctive Art Style: Visually striking, paying a great homage to masterpieces like Silent Hill and Twin Peaks.
- Survival Horror Mechanics: Very reminiscent of Resident Evil with brilliant balancing.
- Level Design: The map design has some incredibly clever moments (though this doesn't apply to every single area).
- Narrative: A gripping, story-driven plot (though it is heavily reliant on puzzles).
Cons & Mixed Elements:
- Tedious Backtracking: As a Metroidvania, returning to previously explored areas for collectibles is expected. However, the traversal here is simply too tedious. There is no fast travel between save points, and moving between major zones is strictly limited. This means there are missable itemsβif you progress the story too far, you can be permanently locked out of acquiring them.
- Chaotic Pathfinding / Quest Tracking: For a story-driven game, it lacks the semi-open, wide-linear level design seen in games like the Silent Hill 2 Remake. While exploring, you will often accidentally stumble into the location of an entirely different quest. The quest markers and objectives aren't very clear. You'll constantly reach one goal only to uncover a new path that triggers a brand-new quest. Combined with the lack of fast travel, route planning becomes an absolute mess, leaving you feeling completely lost and disoriented after a while.
- Old-School Puzzles: The puzzle design is very old-school. Personally, I found them funβnot overly brutal, but definitely not easy either. They are interesting and worth the effort.
- Clunky Combat: The combat feel (specifically melee) isn't great. However, as a survival horror game, this clunkiness actually adds to the immersion and drastically increases the tension and intimidation factor of the monsters.
Verdict:
Overall, based on my playtime, I do recommend this game. That said, the current asking price is a bit steep given that the gameplay experience isn't flawless. I'd highly suggest picking it up on sale.
Because of its incredibly unique art direction, I'd give it a solid 8/10.
Update after further playtime: I'd like to make a few corrections/additions to the "Cons" section of my initial review:
- Regarding Fast Travel: They actually did include a fast travel system! Furthermore, the timing of when you unlock it is perfectly paced and complements the game's overall design brilliantly. It's absolutely perfect. You do have to solve one or two minor puzzles to unlock it, but trust me, it's totally worth the effort.
- Regarding Level Design: The most unreasonable design choice, in my opinion, is the acquisition order for mid-game quest items. It shouldn't have been designed with a parallel progression (meaning you can just pick any of them to start with); instead, it should have been semi-linear (with clear guidance taking you from one stage to the next). However, considering this is a Metroidvania, obtaining key items late in the game and backtracking to earlier maps isn't entirely unjustified.
- Regarding Puzzles: They are really, really, really old-school. Please make good use of your screenshot feature, or just keep a notepad handy to write things down physically.
So, after sinking more time into it, my rating for this game has gone up even higher. What a great game, a classic survival horror game with a side scrolling perspective.
It plays somewhat like resident evil, you have to solve puzzles, manage your inventory and kill (or avoid) monsters. Puzzles aren't too hard and bosses aren't that hard either.
The metroidvania elements come in as trinkets you can equip which give you modifiers that make you stronger and allow you to do a little bit of build crafting. Nothing too complex or revolutionary but it's a nice system.
A note on the trinkets: There is a trinkets that makes swimming possible, it would have been a better idea to just make it a permanent power as i only equipped it when i needed it and immediately replaced it with something else right after.
Shooting is somewhat like worms in the sense that you have no crosshair or indicator of where you are aiming other than the gun direction, so it's not as easy as you might think.
The setting feels like twin peaks with some silent hill sprinkled in, it's great.
The performance was kinda weird, it ran great (as expected given my rig) but in some areas the FPS would tank into the 60s for some reason, i suspect it's some kind of CPU optimization related problem as the GPU utilization never went above 40%. Still it was very playable and the "slowdowns" only happened in places devoid of enemies.
Overall, it's one of my favourite games of 2026.

I am now several hours into the game and faced off with a few different bosses but the only complaint I really have is that the survival horror style combat is a little sketchy here. Not bad, it works for the most part, but I've never been a big fan of weapons degrading and when its a game that you're already dealing with extremely limited ammunition, having melee weapons that break after a few swings is a little ridiculous. I can understand 2x4s and baseball bats eventually breaking down after vigorous use, but no matter how many dudes I hit in the head with a crowbar, it's not going to break.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Would give it a recommendation to a specific group of people. Also, not sure if this is AMD related but after 1,5-2 hours of playtime what feels like a memory leak is forcing me to restart the game. Just something to be aware of.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSilver Pines, as a game, has done something I've only seen a few other games do properly. That being putting a fresh take on not one, but TWO genres (Survival Horror, Metroidvania,) and blend them together into a polished, balanced, interesting, and most importantly, FUN, experience. I bought this game on a whim based on its strong trailer and interesting premise, and as a person trying to explore more of the Team 17 backlog (They truly do have some hidden gems, look up Sunday Gold, its INCREDIBLE) and I... I am genuinely impressed that this is such a deep and amazingly well crafted thing, let alone being a small indie companies DEBUT game.
Modern Survival Horror, to me at least, has been a dead-horse genre. The grids, the gunplay, everything about modern horror titles like Resident Evil 9 was just the same playbook being thumped over and over again. Not bad, by any means, just old ground being tread into the dirt. But the fresh re-imagining of it by introducing the motifs of Metroidvania system, the deep and teeming secrets of the areas you explore, the actually REWARDING back-tracking and items that come with it, and a artistically beautiful, logical 2.5 D map that lets you explore every nook in cranny if you put your mind to it. If there's a ledge you can see, an item you can see, or a path on the map, there IS a way to access it.
And the combat, oh my GOD.
Its a perfect hybrid of everything my goblin brain loves in games. The perfect dodge system, the multi-state health system, the way melee works, the gunplay for both shooting and reloading, the natural ebb and flow of using items, running away, shooting and swinging, and maximizing what weapons and trinkee=ts you want with the various and equally rewarding trinkets dotted around the map, it is SUCH a breath of fresh air I can't believe I was still breathing after everything else. You are given so much ammo, so much time, and so many good and organic choices that even with the world around me, I got sucked back into this game over and over.
Did I mention I loved the combat?!
And to those still reading, sorry, I ramble a lot. I'm a nerd, its expected. But this? This game?
Its incredible.
Everything about it is awesome, and I haven't even gotten into the story, references, voice-acting (seriously, hats off to whoever did the MC oh LORD the rent was due.) cameos, and overall just incredible art direction of this game. Even the SAVE system is awesome. You don't just click a button, you dig around in phone booths for change and use money you find in the world to save your game, turning the currency you usually use for resources into more than a junk item, and engage in phone-calls and conversations that make the world and the person your playing as MATTER. They made SAVING. AWESOME.
How do you do that?!
And if your worried about file size, guess what? This WHOLE experience is the same storage space of Dishonored, and for a damn good price of 25 bucks too!
Seriously. In todays modern gaming sphere, thats AWESOME.
Look, if you wanna skip this all of my ranting, just know this bottom line. If your a survival horror veteran like me who wants a challenge, a good story, a fun, engaging game world, and to dip your toes into the Metroidvania sphere before touching Hollowknight or Silksong, THIS is the game for you. Play it. Beat it. Get all the endings.
And then go touch grass, knowing you have played one of the best games of 2026.
Hats off to you devs. You made my week.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game has become one of my favorite horror games as of recent. If you like metroidvanias, survival horror games, stuff like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Twin Peaks, Alan Wake, Control etc. then you might really like this game cause I sure did.
+ Voice acting is great as well and the way some characters speak is off-putting and weird in a good way.
+ Story is very interesting since I kept wanting to play more to find out more and see the new undiscovered areas.
+ Gameplay and exploration is great. Some puzzles and codes will have their solutions in plain sight but not stated outright (sometimes they are) so you really need to keep and eye out. The game also rewards exploration with lots of good loot hidden in places where you need to find a way to go in or use resources to access it. Bullets to shoot padlocks, shotgun can also break boarded doors
+ Combat is simple and a bit jank but I think it's by design and you get used it. I think it's fine.

= A bit of a spoiler: True to it's inspirations, the story won't outright tell you what's happening and most of the time, leave you questioning and pondering what just happened. Even the endings are a bit vague and let you try to piece what the story is. Some people like the mystery behind it while some would prefer to see what happens outright. I personally would have wanted something a bit more concrete when it comes to the endings but theorizing is also fun.
- Weird bug where my PC and the game starts to lag when streaming the game on discord after a while. Closing the stream and re-streaming fixes it for a bit but it was a weird bug to encounter since I was streaming the game to friends most of the time.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tHow the hell did Wych Elm manage to nail the Resident Evil formula this hard on their first try? This really is the best gameplay loop and location to explore that I've played outside of the RE-series for quite some time. I did turn the difficulty down from "Survival Horror" though, since the first boss just wouldn't die and took all of my resources to clear. The balance didn't feel quite right, and the combat in this game is a little clunky too, so I just had a much better experience turning it down. I would have loved an option between the "Tense" and "Survival Horror" difficulty.
With that said, the artwork and art design of this game is superb. The town is very much its own character, with great panoramas laid atop each other with places you will eventually visit forshadowed in the background. There are a lot of things to find in the game if you look, and searching every part of the town was a treat for a completionist like me.
Regarding the plot, it takes a lot of cues from Lynch and some pointers from the Silent Hill-games. It isn't the strongest overall plot by itself but what really sells it is the dialogue and performances from the voice cast, which raises it above a lot of other modern horror games. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves survival horror games.
