You still get stomped with low level units and almost every encounter is an ambush with 1 heavy, 2 medium and 1 light armor. IDK if that is the way your smooth 1.0 should have been but, it's still the same as this person describes it so I refunded. Read below:
\n\n\t\t\t\tSo if you stick with one squad on higher difficulties the game is fine. The problem is that, ostensibly, you will need more than one squad at some point as there is a fatigue rating which means that you will have to take them out of rotation whilst they recuperate. The fact we have more than a minimum squad also suggests they are expendable. I like impactful failures resulting in catastrophic conditions like death but only providing they are earned due my own lack of forethought, attention to detail, mistakes, or ignorance and not a result of RNG, scripted narrative, or conditions beyond my control. It is also nice when there is the ability to recover, regardless of difficulty, from such outcomes. XCOM, as an example, was excellent in this regard even if it was prone to, shall we say, some intermittent and unlikely occurrences.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
If, however, you try to prepare for the anticipated need for future personnel by using your higher level squad for away missions while using the new recruits for the training missions you will either lose some in the process or you will have to save scum the levels to get them through it. Maintaining parity of your units isn't merely difficult, it seems to be discouragingly prohibitive. The instructor isn't a tank and has no way to control aggro, meaning your entire squad is vulnerable all the time. Not that it matters since he spends an inordinate amount of combat being stunned because he seems to have absolutely no resistance beyond dodge to being staggered.
The enemies prioritize weak armor and low hit points, which is the very definition of low level recruits. Additionally, and I am not exaggerating, more than half of the encounters are ambushes as a result of using new recruits with low initiative. Enemies invariably stun the high level mentor unit depriving him of his first turn (and more depending upon what random recruits you get, what gear you have for them, and how long combat lasts) then proceed to concentrate on one recruit at a time and kill them. On two fights, out of maybe ten, I lost one recruit each before they got a turn. By lost I mean he was downed for the encounter, but you can only being a unit back from being downed once per mission on which there seems be a half dozen to somewhere south of ten encounters in all.
So it looks like these missions were balanced with the assumption players would bring their best and most experienced units. I would happily do so, except away missions seem to give no discernable experience whatsoever. On my first run I tasked my level one units on three missions and they were still level one at the end of them, while my advanced units were graining a minimum of a level and sometimes more than two on active missions. I had five units at level five and three at level one. That is a huge gap. Hence why I began again with the idea of fielding my low level units only to find out that while you can eke through the first training mission you get absolutely wrecked right out of the gate on the second one. By wrecked, I mean all three (level 2) recruits were downed in the very first fight while the mentor's armor hadn't even been broken yet because he was ignored except for stun attacks. I didn't bother to finish the missions since I felt confident the moment any of the recruits died I would simply be entering a death spiral which would eventually see the whole team wiped. It was obvious enough at that point I didn't really need to see it play out.
I want a challenge, but units dying before they get turns, or only after a single turn, is mostly just disappointing since no combat on higher difficulties is determined in a single round with fresh recruits although if you know you are doing and with a little luck you can end most of them in two. Maybe I am being impatient. Maybe after the training missions there are multiple options to choose from which allow for grinding assets/experience/whatever at a comfortable pace. Maybe thinking ahead and trying to approach things strategically is actually working against me. Don't know, but since there are no hard saves, I am not able to experiment and discover these things for myself without starting everything all over again on a fresh run. . .And you know what, at this point I have put in too much time to want to start over, but not nearly enough to fall in love with this title. Especially since, at this point, I haven't even come within line of sight of a plot to all this yet.
Shelving it for now, will return to it in a year or so. These are good devs, I am sure they will sort it out, but for now it is just not for me.

We hear you! We did rework the whole QT system, it is far easier now (in dev build). More tries, specific classes add more tries instead of being needed to even start the specific QT. Perks that add tries, passives that level for more tries and other bonuses. It will be much smother on the release. Hope you will like it then and change your negative review!!!

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t I was really excited to check this game out. I like the premise. It’s a mashup of games I already love, and I have hundreds of hours in XCOM and Darkest Dungeon. The bug designs are cool, the music is great, and the setting is cool.
That’s where the positives ended for me. On my first mission I already saw what a slog this game is on hard mode. Enemies being decently beefy is fine. The problem is the ones in the back heal and spam evasion constantly. Every encounter turns into a slog because if you don’t dump enough DPS in a single turn, they just heal the damage back off. If you use a support skill on your turn, then you’ve cut your DPS in half. If your damage dealers miss some of their multi-hit attacks because the enemy just used a heal/evade, you wasted the turn. You spent it healing instead of doing enough damage, so they just heal it all back off and then attack.
It’s also unclear how panacea actually works. I still took bleed damage with it on. Player healing output sucks. Armor regen and health regen exist, which is fine on paper, but enemies heal better than you do and they hit with good accuracy. Healing even has cooldowns on the medic class. You essentially have worse healing tools than the enemy, especially when they’re already putting out solid damage. You have to anticipate who’s going to get hit and who needs the regen in advance. Early game it’s hard to even hit the 10 cap on regeneration for that burst of healing or armor.
I slogged through mission one and beat it. Mission two’s first encounter was another slog. I don’t think I played it badly. My marksman just ate horrible RNG and died. When the whole enemy pack attacks in one turn, it’s hard to keep anyone up.
I finally slogged to the boss. What the hell was that thing?!? Over ~400 health plus support units. Because I lost my marksman I couldn’t reliably reach slots 3 and 4, so I was stuck doing chip to the backline every now and then.
The mission only lets you bring three allies. I recruited a sniper mid-mission after the marksman died, so I was running tank / healer / sniper. The sniper can’t even use the sniper shot multiple turns in a row. You’re stuck on the pistol until the big hit is off cooldown, and even then that attack doesn’t do much. As useful as a medic without a heal.
I cleared the adds and got the boss to about 200 before it started wiping the party. I didn’t lose because I was down a character. The boss is just overloaded. Two attacks at 17 a hit, 100% accuracy, they never miss. Nothing is surviving 34 damage a turn when your HoT and armor regen are on cooldown and not enough to keep up.

\n\n\t\t\t\tThat’s where the positives ended for me. On my first mission I already saw what a slog this game is on hard mode. Enemies being decently beefy is fine. The problem is the ones in the back heal and spam evasion constantly. Every encounter turns into a slog because if you don’t dump enough DPS in a single turn, they just heal the damage back off. If you use a support skill on your turn, then you’ve cut your DPS in half. If your damage dealers miss some of their multi-hit attacks because the enemy just used a heal/evade, you wasted the turn. You spent it healing instead of doing enough damage, so they just heal it all back off and then attack.
It’s also unclear how panacea actually works. I still took bleed damage with it on. Player healing output sucks. Armor regen and health regen exist, which is fine on paper, but enemies heal better than you do and they hit with good accuracy. Healing even has cooldowns on the medic class. You essentially have worse healing tools than the enemy, especially when they’re already putting out solid damage. You have to anticipate who’s going to get hit and who needs the regen in advance. Early game it’s hard to even hit the 10 cap on regeneration for that burst of healing or armor.
I slogged through mission one and beat it. Mission two’s first encounter was another slog. I don’t think I played it badly. My marksman just ate horrible RNG and died. When the whole enemy pack attacks in one turn, it’s hard to keep anyone up.
I finally slogged to the boss. What the hell was that thing?!? Over ~400 health plus support units. Because I lost my marksman I couldn’t reliably reach slots 3 and 4, so I was stuck doing chip to the backline every now and then.
The mission only lets you bring three allies. I recruited a sniper mid-mission after the marksman died, so I was running tank / healer / sniper. The sniper can’t even use the sniper shot multiple turns in a row. You’re stuck on the pistol until the big hit is off cooldown, and even then that attack doesn’t do much. As useful as a medic without a heal.
I cleared the adds and got the boss to about 200 before it started wiping the party. I didn’t lose because I was down a character. The boss is just overloaded. Two attacks at 17 a hit, 100% accuracy, they never miss. Nothing is surviving 34 damage a turn when your HoT and armor regen are on cooldown and not enough to keep up.

Managing squads, gear, base upgrades, and operational missions is a great break between the combat missions. The selection of upgraded new classes at level 11 bring additional strategies to consider.
I'm shocked this game just dipped into Mostly Positive overall instead of Very Positive. The negative reviews seem to stem from rolling into hard mode of a complex game and being surprised that it is indeed... hard. In my first campaign I created a custom setup about halfway between normal and hard (though I kept perma-death is off). I've had no problems progressing deep into the game and am enjoying the challenge. Unlike some others, I love the soldier fatigue system. It keeps you from just spamming an A-Team non-stop and allows you to put together new squads and discover new synergies. I've experienced no bugs (other than the ones I'm killing on missions).

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tMost legit complaint about this game is that it is very grindy, though not as grindy as the much-compared Darkest Dungeon (having to level up all those full teams to complete the darkest dungeon; what a drag).
On the highest difficulty at least, the game is also pretty brutal. You basically can't do missions that your characters don't over-level; your dudes will simply get oneshot constantly. Not every fight, but some of these missions have 3-6 fights with sometimes just 4 enemies in one but other times 18+ enemies in one fight, and with that many enemies throwing that much at you over that long a mission, eventually you just RNG yourself into a dead guy. So the safest way to do these missions is to overlevel them by 2-3 levels. Which then, of course, makes the game EXTRA grindy, since you get relatively less exp than your characters need due to their higher levels than the mission requirements. So, counterintuitively, your most powerful team(s) will actually end up being the 'B', 'C', or even 'D' teams, as they will level up faster by doing operations than your main team will by doing missions this way.
Another tedious part is the gearing. Gear has enough potential (wothless) modifiers, but also enough extremely powerful (arguably mandatory) modifiers, that you end up sitting ther for ages cycling through hundreds of pieces of gear, looking for those 1-in-10 pieces that are worth equipping, and especially those 1-in-30 (or rarer) pieces that really let your guys carry. Getting your engineer e.g., to 10+ stacks of shock application is a gamechanger, since now he will be 100% stunning the entire team every time he throws his grenade (and of course you need the accuracy to let him land these hits, too). Then you need a ton of perception to prevent ambushes, accuracy on everyone to let them hit stuff, tons of panacea on your supports to let them remove all the debuffs you keep getting hit with, tech-nanobots on your engineers to let them repair armor efficiently, of course debuff stacks on your dps, and so on. So you end up sitting there for a really long time, looking for those ideal pieces. Gets pretty dull after a while.
Upside is that this does all seem worth it. The characters have pretty interesting abilities, and there are enough of them with different enough abilities that it feels interesting to play around with them. And you do (I don't know if this is an upside to everyone or not, but it is to me) become powerful enough by the end of the game - through the combination of all these abilities you get access to - to give you that satisfying feeling of dominance as you trivially obliterate all these enemies that used to give you such trouble.
Anyway. If you do like unforgiving DD-style turn based games, then it's definitely worth a look. They didn't break any new ground in Tenebris; they could have pushed it a bit further. But what is in place is, nonetheless, pretty good.
For some reason, I expected the game to be too simplistic. I bought it expecting to end up asking for a refund, but I went ahead anyway because the price was fair (a rare sight these days). One hour in and I was already hooked though, and then I played this for 45 hours in less than a week.
With that being said, Tenebris release was clearly rushed, because some ugly bugs remain, including a game-breaking one that won't let me proceed with one of the main quests (mission "Second Law of Thermodynamics"). Sometimes -- very often when using Berserkers -- your frontline dudes start attacking for 0 damage for no reason. The highest tier of items is called "masterwork" in one place, "mythic" in another. A Tier 3 Sniper's passive-skill that makes another, active one hit a line instead of a single enemy is not working. Some skill descriptions are unclear and others have mistyped code showing up.
Hopefully, they'll get that stuff fixed up soon. I still want to finish the game, but currently can't.
EDIT: A day later, they fixed the worst bugs I just mentioned.
As to the game itself:
You do "Raids" with squads of 4 characters, moving horizontally across the screen while you try to spot some shiny objects randomly scattered around to collect extra resources, until some enemies show up and combat begins (thank God they didn't go with that FTL-style node-based structure. I'm sick of that). Raids can include anything from 1 to 10 fights or so in them.
The combat is "JRPG style," visually presented more like Darkest Dungeon's (skill-bar at the bottom instead of menus). But there's none of that Stress BS in Tenebris, and after each fight all your characters are fully healed.
There are 5 base-classes available for your characters, which can then be upgraded to 1 or 2 different Tier 2 ones, and finally to 1 out of 2 different Tier 3 ones. Each class has a skill-tree from which you get to select 10 skills per tier, meaning that, ultimately, you have Tier 3 characters with 10 Tier 1, 10 Tier 2 and 10 Tier 3 skills on them.
Each character can have up to 8 active skills at once, and though there isn't much room for build-crafting you still have to think a fair amount to decide which skills to get on each character and what classes to put together to form an efficient party of 4.
Characters can also equip multiple weapons, armor, helmet and implants. What item-slots each one has depends on their class, there are 5 tiers of items in the game, and they come with random attributes that can relevantly affect combat performance.
On top of classes, skills and items, characters also have random innate Perks, passive skills that must be unlocked via in-Raid or in-combat actions, and they can use Stimulants in between Raids to get temporary buffs (Stimulants are rather expensive, though).
In between missions, you get to upgrade your base, hire or fire new guys, put them to rest to lower their Fatigue, buy and sell items, and send the folks you won't be using in your next Raid to do Operations.
Operations are automatically completed by the assigned characters in the backgroud, while you do a Raid yourself. They yield resources, items and experience. Oddly, Operations are a much better way to level your characters than the actual Raids -- some 5 times better. You can just send dudes on the highest-level Operations available while you keep doing level 1 raids just to "pass the time" and complete those Operations. That's what I did, but doing Main Missions and others when I could as well, until all my guys were level 30. It kind of felt like I was cheating, but the game allowed for it, so... not doing it would have been stupid.
As a final point, play the game on the "Normal" difficulty. I did so after reading other reviewers complaining about the "Hard" one and, after having played the game, I believe they were right. Playing on Hard is bound to be a mistake, especially when you don't know what you're doing. I got wiped more than once on Normal when doing missions that were more than 5 levels below my squad's.
In short:
I was initially skeptical, but Tenebris is actually really fun. I had a great time trying out different squads, "respecing" my skill trees multiple times to fix my own mistakes, assigning the right items to the proper dudes, ... you know, building my guys and taking them out to murder the local fauna in cold blood.
Tenebris has enough depth to it to keep you going for over 40 hours, and it never bored me.
For the current asking price, this is an easy recommendation.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that some of the game's Art -- in particular, the characters' -- is pretty cool. And you know how it usually looks like crap when people animate 2D sprites' limbs? Well, these guys knew how to do that right, so it looks fine here.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There is a pretty good amount of customization as you have 5 base classes that branch into more advanced classes, all of which have their own skill tree. There is also randomized loot with gear having their own affixes and you have some consumables as well that can be applied to soldiers at the start of a mission. And finally there are interactables in each mission to get extra loot, from just stuff hidden on the ground or in the background to stuff that has mini games to unlock that can be made easier by having certain classes.
This game is fairly grindy though, you will be doing a lot of missions and the game also encourages you to switch soldiers as they have a fatigue mechanic which reduces their max health the more stress they build up and you need to let them recover for 1 or more missions in order to remove that. There are also operations which let you send soldiers back at base on away missions to get more xp and resources. There are also story and side missions as well as a repeatable missions you can do to grind up xp or gear if you want.
All in all, if you enjoy the gameplay, there is a lot of stuff here to dig your teeth into. However if you don't enjoy the gamplay after the first couple hours, the rest of the game is probably not going to change your mind. I got it on sale during early access and consider it a good bang for your buck if you are into this genre of game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Half the skills either don't work at all or do not work properly. A recent update claims to have fixed this, but it makes the game unplayable. Missions load into a black screen, or just infinitely load effectively killing the save file.
The progression is slowed on purpose to pad playtime to necessitate grinding. Overall, a promising title with a fun gameplay loop hampered by extreme laziness and sloppiness. If you're thinking of purchasing, wait for a better sale and wait until the game is actually playable, gameplay elements function as intended, and for more content that's paced better.

Base-building strike force management combines with side-scrolling turn-based combat in Tenebris. A simpler yet robust paper doll equipment system, class specific skill trees, and class evolutions give the game considerable depth and longevity. Devs incorporated clever teasers/introductions of aforementioned class evolutions by featuring them here & there in actual available missions, which certainly gives players an excellent idea of what each can offer, before they make the choices for their own teams. Difficulty seems to be in that magical balanced zone of challenging but not a chore. It is very nice to have seen this title turn into such a rewarding pursuit.

Leveling my heroes is fun and there is enough enemy variety to keep me interested.
What i find the most uninteresting/boring in this game is the upgrades screen and the fact that there is no real base building/upgrading.
I also find it annoying that i cant apply stimulants from the global map.
the hero limit at 20/30 is too low and why are they called heroes anyways?

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm on the fence about this title, but I'm giving Tenebris a thumbs-up because it's a pretty good game, even if it is not that fun for me. Some gamers will love it and some won't. Read on to see which camp you'll be in.
Story. The world-building is both familiar (with a reliance on classic sci-fi tropes) and clever, with recruiting heroes being skinned as "waking them from cryostasis" and a lot of love for the movie version of Starship Troopers and Alien. Your enemies are nasty bug-aliens who are smart but seem animal-like, with plenty of poison, acid, and drippy yucky gas and fluid attacks. There is base building that unlocks the hospital beds to rest up, a shop for equipment, and so on. There are nods to the gung-ho manic suicidal soldier trope. If this sounds entertaining, you may enjoy it.
Gameplay. The main game loop involves picking some of your soldiers to walk slowly on patrol through a painted backdrop, such as a starship corridor or a dark tunnel, like in the original Darkest Dungeon. Your heroes are heavily-armed soldiers that work as medics to heal and remove debuffs, techs to debuff and unlock stuff, damage-spec gunmen with assault rifles, snipers, and heavies that soak damage. They stand in a mob and fight like Darkest Dungeon heroes, doing damage on most attacks and occasionally getting unlucky. Unlike DD, after each fight you heal back to full and restore all your armor points, so you just need to win each fight to heal up. You don't usually see monsters before you bump into them; they spawn when you hit a point in the corridor. There also aren't a lot of branches in the pathway, so you don't backtrack or get "stuck" as you walk through. Fights are turn-based and you pick a power, some with a recharge time, and on enemy turns they do the same stuff. I did not find that tactics mattered a whole lot, but squad composition did.
Throughout your walking, there is a hidden object-like minigame which usually flashes a little glint to signal you should click on the backdrop to get some loot. Often these are from loose floor panels, crystals, or other "obvious" clickables, but there are also lots of things that look the same that don't give you prizes. There are more obvious chests and dead enemies (and friends) around that you can also click to get loot. If you miss them they're lost, though if you go slow you usually get everything. In addition to the combat game and the searching game, there are several little minigames involving hitting a key at the right point to unlock doors, chests, and remove traps.
When you're back at base, you can spend the loot you got to buy items, upgrade the base, and recruit new Level 1 (or occasionally better) heroes. There are also conversations with the crew of the ship, which are scripted and in my opinion generally badly written. This part in particular gives off a mobile game feeling and I wonder if they originally planned for this to be a phone game, since the DNA of these choices feels so mobile game. I kept half expecting to see "dailies" and "weeklies" and a guild with raids showing up.
What I Hated. There are a few parts I really disliked. First, I picked it up because I love Darkest Dungeon. Because you have few choices of route and don't really accumulate pain as you go due to the insta-heal after each fight, it wears thin fast. There isn't much risk/reward trade-off where you might consider bailing on a mission midway, or having to really push through the pain to get somewhere. I suspect less masochistic people may prefer it this way, but I missed the loot-stacking high-risk choices in DD. Even with permadeath, the lack of choice makes the permadeath just feel punitive and luck-driven rather than based on my own failings as a human being. What makes X-COM and DD work so well is the feeling that your hero dying was, at least in part, your own fault and not just bad luck, even though bad luck clearly played a factor. You can't ignore your own greed in the "why I died" equation, whereas here you pretty much know it was not your choice to press on or not.
Second, the loot in the game is all keyed to character levels in an irritating way that resembles the worst mobile game features. Why can't I use a Level 6 gun at Level 3, if I found it? You spend a lot of time rotating the same guns from your senior people to the junior folks, which does not feel like a lot of fun. The differences between items are mostly minor and the Diablo-style randomization doesn't bring me excitement. I think this would be fixed easily if you removed level restrictions on items, which might also help junior squaddies to survive on higher-level missions.
Summing Up. There is a lot to like here, but the game gives bad mobile vibes too often for me to enjoy it. Nonetheless, it's low-cost and pleasant for those who dreamed of a less punitive DD that railroads you better.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

For some reason, the Steam algorithm kept it hidden from me until just two weeks ago, even though the game had been available in Early Access for a year. I started playing it after its release and completed the campaign on ‘Serious Challenge’ difficulty, which is the middle of the three available levels.
According to the story, we crash-land in a spaceship on an unknown planet, where we’re immediately attacked by hostile insect-like creatures. By defeating continuous and increasingly powerful waves of enemies, we can explore the area and ultimately solve the mystery of our crash.
During combat, we can command a four-person squad, which we can assemble from the five basic character classes available. I highly recommend developing several characters in parallel so that you can always find the right combination for a given enemy. The variety of enemies is also immense.
Combat is very enjoyable; it’s not too difficult and provides just the right challenge. The RNG is also fair, and no hidden bs mechanincs. There are a few enemy abilities towards the end of the campaign that may seem unfair but by then you’ll be able to create such powerful characters that you can overcome them with the right tactics and class combinations.
The graphics are pleasing, the sound effects and music are decent. There are some minor bugs here and there.
Overall, this is a brilliant indie game, and if you’re into turn-based games, it’s a must-have.
