At first I didn't really like the base game, maybe its because I've played so much stuff in source or whatever but I found it boring up until near the ending. But once I got into episode one I fell in love and it clicked to me why this game is so beloved. The stuff showcased in this game really was leagues ahead of everyone else at the time, and maybe even nowadays. The facial animations still blow me away even though they're nearly as old as me. Good game and well worth the ten USD it is at full price, not to mention how often it goes on crazy deep discount sale alongside all the other amazing Valve games for usually less than ten bucks. I feel like they really hit their stride with episode one and so far they've continued to top their previous work every single time they release anything. I genuinely refuse to believe this game is from 2004, it blew my mind! The graphics haven't aged at all and everything is structured so well. Having a more elaborate and direct storytelling that expands on the consequences of the Resonance Cascade, it also had extra room for more intricate and elaborate puzzle and combat sequences, which were some of the best I have ever seen in any videogame. I could go on for longer but I'm afraid I lack the writing skills to really highlight how great this game is, just go ahead and play it! However, it didn't stop me from being sort of annoyed that this felt more like a glorified Source engine showcase more than anything. Much of this game felt like a slog and I had to force myself to finish it honestly. That being said, the game does introduce an insane amount of new mechanics and game ideas that were so revolutionary to games at the time that it IS still considered a marvel even today. You sort of look at this game that has all these features and quality that modern games lack and you wonder what the hell modern game devs are even doing with their time.
