\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tGurei is an insanely fun game. Spoilers below in case you're wanting to go in blind, but if that's the case why are you reading the reviews get outta here.
It's a fairly short experience in a small world, but don't let that fool you because that world is packed with interesting NPCs and minigames (it's a little bit mean what you need to do to the cyclops who's just minding his own business, but achievements must be collected so... sorry big guy...).
To me the main appeal is how well designed and layered the movesets of the bosses are. Going from a simple couple of moves if you fight them first, to stacking everything together slowly but surely, with each version of your chosen final boss having a "super move" that drastically alters everything you've come to expect from them. Catfish for example, throwing an egg at you that turns off your other Kami abilities, or bull's super aerial slam for a huge AOE.
The learning curve is brilliant and you really feel yourself improving in real-time as you play. Mastering each ability and figuring out which you need to use in order to deal with each NPC character was a decent brain workout.
Speaking of character, the Kami themselves are all really well written. They're one-dimensional, but they have such strong personalities that it's hard not to enjoy them. It's a really nice break in pace after you beat a boss and you get to walk through the plane listening to them bicker and comment on your progress and drop tidbits of lore.
I love the design of the large spirit versions of the Kami, which brings me to the art direction. Despite the world being incredibly... uh... Gurei, it's obviously done with intention and makes the colours of each Kami pop, making each area in the castle and its grounds look distinct and interesting.
I understand the devs specifically describe it as NOT A METROIDVANIA in the discord FAQ, but it's hard not to feel a little like one. Abilities don't act as keys to progression 100%, but I've found in playing that certain abilities really help with certain bosses, giving it a feeling of "build your own mini-metroidvania". For example, I find the monkey's, and the peafowl's abilities really useful versus the catfish and as such I will fight them first in order to make the catfish nice and easy, in the same way you might find a double jump ability in a metroidvania that as well as unlocking progression, helps make bosses/enemies easier to fight.
I do still consider it a boss rush at risk of drawing the wrath of the devs, but it's definitely got a few conventions of the metroidvania genre that are hard to ignore (this is a positive and adds to it in my opinion!).
Finally of course the music is very nice and atmospheric. My favourite boss soundtracks were for the dove and the snake they're very vibey. It's a super cool bit of sound design that each boss track intensifies the longer you fight the boss, since the more powered up the boss is, the more likely it'll take longer to kill, and so the more likely you'll be able to hear the more pumped up version of their track.
With all that said, the only real negatives I have are:
- sometimes the invincible air dash isn't actually invincible at times
- getting chained by boss attacks can be a little frustrating (looking at you all weapons peafowl and dove!!!)
- sometimes rocks fall through catfish' shield despite one dropping in the exact same place moments earlier and hitting it
- minor pet peeve about dying in frog room after killing all enemies because he takes a moment to put down his pipe, sometimes giving the pink buff just enough time to tick down
Other than that though, truly a remarkable experience and I would open my wallet and shell out for another boss rush from these devs in a heartbeat. Highly recommend!!!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As for gameplay itself I would consider is rather slow with a lot of emphasis on fundamental skills such as how to effectively utilize everything you got for offense, but in the same time don’t forget how to avoid damage.

To me the game has great visuals and black-white color scheme with contrast colors feels just right (also whole black-white art style is huge homage to old black-white samurai movies which is neat). Artists did incredible job.Story
To be honest game had my attention mostly by gameplay and visual aesthetic, so I wasn’t into story too much, but not so long time ago I learned more about the story of the game and I was pleasantly surprised. Developers put a lot of effort into it. I won’t go with spoilers here, but if you’re really interested I suggest to check out video “Listen to the Catfish” by CSideSummit.Music
When I only started to play Gurei, I didn’t pay much attention to the music all that much (especially on boss fights where I have to be very focused) so to me it was always has been just good and thematic. But when I listened to the whole OST on youtube… turned out actually music in the game is really well made. I think my favorite is Merciless Reaper (Snake boss fight music).Gameplay
Unforgiving game
At first Gurei seems like easy game, but the more you progress in your run the more threatening bosses will become which at some point may seem like game became too brutal. But the twist is – I think game is fair and respect your skills and knowledge most of all. No stats to help you with fights, no any kind of progression. Only your blade and your knowledge which creates interesting feeling when every loss feels not like loss, but rather like lesson you need to learn (but maybe it’s just me). But I do understand that this experience might not be a good fit for everyone (which makes me respect the game even more). When I only started to play the game I was losing a lot, but I never felt the game is unfair so I never got really frustrated. I felt rather tired because (especially at first) game is pretty demanding for your focus because fights can become very tense. My point is that Gurei provides fair and creative challenge that you’ll overcome eventually, one way or another, but do not expect it’ll be easy. You’ll need to spend some time to build skills and knowledge in order to beat the game, just be ready for it. Bosses
Each boss is unique in it’s own way. Not only from design standpoint (which is outstanding btw), but from a way you fight them. Each has their own strength (and something extra special stored for you in their final form) and weaknesses and it’s very interesting to discover them. I think in Gurei bosses designed in very clever way.Skills
For defeating each boss you acquire their unique skill. And each skill has it’s own uses. Some are clearly offensive, some are defensive, some are from both types. But the most fun part of is how some skills can synergize with each other. For example, you can shoot down in the air from the bow (Dove’s skill) so Rei will be launched on just enough height to perform slam (Bull’s skill). Or while dodge resets any charge for the bow/decoy, shield (Catfish’s ability), on contrary, allows you to keep it and perform powerful offensive attack right after defending yourself and so on. So it creates certain depth in how to build your strategy against particular boss. Personally I wish there were even more such skills synergies, but what we have already is very cool.Conclusion

But the movement killed it for me almost immediately. The dash has a noticeable delay before it kicks in, which feels really strange. I press it at exactly the right moment, and I still get hit because the character takes a beat to actually start moving. In a game that's entirely about precise boss fights, that's a big problem. Every fight ends up feeling like you're fighting the controls instead of the boss. I honestly don't see why it couldn't be snappy and responsive like in most modern action games.

Would really benefit from a lot of suggestions in some of the other reviews like practice mode, option for boss select after repeatedly running back (yes I get there's stuff to do on the map but lemme fast travel to the bosses!), extended I-frames (F the damn combo hits), more mobility (like movement speed and a real air dash not on a cooldown), reducing the lingering hitboxes (always feels disrespectful dodging through an attack only to get hit anyways), more useful skills, at least slightly reduced boss health, etc.
