\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI played the hell out of shapez years ago and was excited for 2. I played the early access last year and just never got hooked. Then I tried it again once it 1.0 was released and... yeah it's real good.
Here's the big highlight for me, a super simple but incredibly impactful choice the game makes. See, in the first game, machine ratios, i.e. how many machines it took to export a single full belt, was quite complicated. Even splitting a belt was complicated, requiring a unique machine. This was worsened by systems that allowed you to upgrade the speed of machines separately from the belts, meaning that a set of painters that previously worked fine, would suddenly be operating at 80% capacity because you upgraded your belt speed. Getting a good handle on these ratios felt like specialist knowledge and it never really clicked for me.
In Shapez 2, a couple of small decisions have fixed all of my problems. First of all, belt splitting is an inherent ability of belts now. It works so seamlessly that the idea of having to place "splitters" feels entirely alien. Ratios are now listed very clearly when you select machines. They're always integers from 2-6 meaning that you can perfectly balance inputs and outputs. These ratios are also pointed out to the player from the first moment they deal with them, encouraging engagement with the concept from the moment you start building factories.
Finally, and I don't think this was the case in the earlier build of the game I played, machine speed is now a singular variable that upgrades all machines AND belts, meaning that the machine that you built in the first five minutes will still be a viable design after 50 hours. This is such an insanely good change and it reinforces the way this game approaches ratios by keeping that number consistent. No matter how much I upgrade, I am still going to need two rotators for every full belt of shapes.
Now this falls apart a little bit when it comes to fluid, which behaves differently from shapes. At a base level, this is a great change. Fluid in the first game behaved identically to shapes, being moved along belts as individual clumps. In 2, fluid is measured in liters and requires a different kind of belt (tubes) to transport. This means you can no longer get a clump of blue stuck in your stacker, which is nice, and requires you to deal with the physical properties of fluid, also nice.
However the transportation of fluid and its use in machines feels far more like the first game's ratios. It's very unclear to me how much fluid is needed per machine. Pipes can be fused together and transport fluids instantly to machines, but can still run out of fluid if not enough is being supplied. Launchers, which function seamlessly for shapes, impose limitations for fluid. And because we're dealing with liters, the numbers are far harder to grasp at a glance.
Despite this, I have managed to make painters that operate at peak efficiency, although the complex nature of fluid means that I can never feel quite certain that I'm not oversupplying them.
As for general game feel, Shapez 2 is peak. The productivity ceiling is so much higher than the first game, but you start at about the same output, so instead of going from delivering 20 shapes per minute to doing 200, you go from 20 to 200,000, discovering new levels and technologies to reach that number. My only critique would be to hide some of that future from the player at the onset. Players are informed of a third level early on in the game before you have access to it, so you're aware that you're operating at limited efficiency for a good portion of the early game, which doesn't feel awesome. If that level was hidden from the players (which would require some remodeling of the space pipes, so I understand why they don't do it), you could convince the player they're always being as efficient as possible, before pulling the rug out from under them and revealing, "no actually, you can do triple the amount."
I also wish the shape requirements were a little bigger. As it is currently, if you build efficient factories that export a full train car of shapes, you burn through each level of a job extremely quickly, meaning that you've hardly gotten started on designing the next factory when you have to go back to the first and update it. I crave moments like I had in the first game where I can take a deep breath and take a break or just appreciate my work. As it is, there's not really a gameplay "loop" as much as a gameplay "laser;" constant, unrelenting, but still pretty rad.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is objectively good: the controls are smooth, almost everything is intuitive, and I think this makes a fine factory game for beginners. BUT, I think the impermanence truly ruins it for me. I tend to overproduce in factory games, since scaling up is more fun to me than completing objectives. I aim for high production rates, and I enjoy the challenge of sustaining it. But when you only need like 3000 of a certain shape and then you never have to make it again (outside of operator levels), I always feel like it would have been faster to make a spagetti trickle than actually good builds. Yes, you make the components of a shape before delivering the final product. But train networks always have a lag to them before the economy of scale kicks in and they get full throughput. So I will build the entire production line , ratioed to deliver a full space belt of shapes to the vortex, then I wait for the trains to pick up 3x the required amount, then I refactor my production for the new shape and repeat. It lacks permanence, and you are always chasing the next shape. That doesn't feel like a game, that feels like a job. And it even calls the sidequests jobs!
To summarize, I believe that this game is fine for people who have never played a factory game before, but to basically anyone else, I would recommend Factorio instead. I'm going to try to get a refund but I played for 9.5 hours so I don't think I will.

I find it has been brilliantly executed -- the graphics are stellar, the UI is good and the music is perfectly unobtrusive. At first glance you might think this is a very complicated game but it actually has a well thought-out progression system. You start with simple jobs and along the way you get access to new machines and new controls. The controls themselves are very player-friendly and you pretty much never have to fight them. Getting to grips with the controls is NOT one of the skills you have to master as a player. Want to flip one of your designs? Presto and it automatically has also changed the direction of any belts so that you can directly use it. The controls are full of such nice Quality of Life features.
Depending on what mode you play the game in, there are no time-limits or any real limits as you work your way through all the jobs the game contains. Resources can be found all over the map and as you progress you get more comfortable and proficiant in moving them quickly from one end of the map to another. It all looks very cool and the interface, again, is very well thought out. The more you zoom in or out, you enter a different view mode with different tools to your disposal (that often do fulfil the same role but on a grander or smaller scale).
The piece and calm of this game is also carried by the music. Such calm and smooth tracks that you forget time while you play it. I have put many hours into the game already and many are more to follow as this is one of those games you think "let me see of this works" and before you know it another hour or more has passed.
This game gives you the option to play it as a simple builder of items with the available machines and you just enjoy the calm nature of the game, watch all those little blocks flow by on screen while the tunes give you this zen feeling of fulfillment. But if you want, you can go full out with multi-layered platforms and even multi-layered space-transports with trains that perform loops and follow tracks with complicated routes and signalling.
The ultimate end goal is to create a MaM, a Make Anything Machine. But that's only if you feel up to it because this requires some higher logical thinking and you have to use complications using boolean operators (in the form of machines that you place on top of belts or pipes, as an example) to guide certain parts through certain machines so that the right parts come out at the end. I haven't tried it yet and maybe I might never succeed but I will certainly give it a go once I get there. I've put 60+ hours in it already and I still have a *LONG* way to go before I can think about building a MaM. I don't want to yet either because I'm still having lots of fun trying to fulfill all the jobs in a kind-of smart way.

It's a fun, addictive factory builder where I have to think about how to make something, but more importantly how to do it optimally. I've been playing on the Hard Campaign, because I've had experience with the original game, and I was doing pretty good. Everything made sense.
...and then I got to Milestone 5. Pins.
The VERY FIRST STEP requires you to do something that is not explained ANYWHERE in the game. You are vaguely informed of the mechanics you need to abuse to get it to work... one time. One sentence in the Codex that tells you that "Stacking beyond the limit of 4 destroys excess layers. This can be used to your advantage in later stages." You are given this fact at the beginning of the game. Which for me, was 30 hours of gameplay and several weeks ago, and has not been used a single time in those 30 hours of gameplay.
This is such an out-of-left-field requirement and knowledge check that I had to look up what I am expected to do. And even after looking it up, I still don't get it. Having the very first thing you are asked to do with a brand new mechanic being an obscure advanced technique that goes against everything else you've done in the game up to that point would be fine if previous milestones were similar. But no. When you unlock painting, you're asked to paint half of a shape, which is easily done by cutting the shape in half, painting one half, and re-stacking them. Paint MIXING you don't even have to do until the third step. But pins? You're somehow supposed to deduce that, by particularly adding pins. stacking, and cutting in a specific order using specific shapes, you can turn what has been introduced to you as a Support Beam into what is essentially a glorified shape.
And again, this would be FINE if it was a special challenge found way later on into the game. But it's not. It's the first thing the game asks you to do once unlocking pins.
But I could look past all of that. I could roll my eyes, and go "Okay, I guess we're supposed to see it as its own shape, and not something we add to another shape." I would be FINE. If the VERY NEXT STEP DIDN'T TELL YOU TO IGNORE THAT IT EVER HAPPENED AT ALL, GIVES YOU A MUCH EASIER SCENARIO, AND NEVER MAKES YOU USE IT AGAIN. The next time you need to have a pin by itself is for Job 36, and by then you have a much easier, much more well explained and way more intuitive way to get one.
It just feels like such a glaring oversight, having what feels like an enormous "screw you" for unlocking a new mechanic, that it should have been altered in some way. It's a brand new mechanic that wasn't in the first game, don't make the player do an extremely specific niche trick to finish the first objective, and then immediately backpedal and make all the extra effort you put in worthless at the very next step.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tShapez 2 is a cozy beautiful factory simulator game with the most polished and satisfying UI of all factory simulators, and none of the frustration. For example, let's look at two of the worst aspects of Factorio: 1) it's tough to rebuild outdated designs and experiment with new ones, since rebuidling takes time, resources, and the game does not allow you to pre-test any designs; 2) there's no time to perfect any designs, since while you are optimizing some random circuit assembler, the bugs are chewing your walls. As the result of these two problems, you don't really have room for experimentation without knowing what to do beforehand (from guides or previous experience), so you are often forced to use objectively terrible factory designs way past their shelf life, unless you've already played through the whole game, and know to which endgame designs you should attempt to converge.
Both of those problems are fully solved in Shapez 2. Building is free and flexible, you can instantly reposition, copy-paste, delete objects, preview the outputs immediately. The game always shows you the building-to-conveyor belt ratio (which stays constant through the speed upgrades!!!!), making it easier to design perfectly efficient setups. UI/UX has been perfected - it is unsurprising that the developers of a game about optimizing the designs have, indeed, managed to perfrectly optimize the UX design. It means that every click and interaction is satisfying. There's no functional pause in this game, but unlike Factorio, this does not create any pressure on you, since your only enemy is inefficiency. And you are given ample means to eradicate that. I don't mean that the game is trivial though - there are difficulty levels, and you are free to seriously challenge yourself. \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
\n\n\t\t\t\tBoth of those problems are fully solved in Shapez 2. Building is free and flexible, you can instantly reposition, copy-paste, delete objects, preview the outputs immediately. The game always shows you the building-to-conveyor belt ratio (which stays constant through the speed upgrades!!!!), making it easier to design perfectly efficient setups. UI/UX has been perfected - it is unsurprising that the developers of a game about optimizing the designs have, indeed, managed to perfrectly optimize the UX design. It means that every click and interaction is satisfying. There's no functional pause in this game, but unlike Factorio, this does not create any pressure on you, since your only enemy is inefficiency. And you are given ample means to eradicate that. Basically a pin is small object produced out of thin air and placed underneath the shape. But of course the game wants you to deliver shapes with the pin on top so you end up having to build about eight machines just to isolate the pin and use it like an ordinary shape.
I strongly believe that this process goes against the core idea of a factory. The machines should be making things more efficient instead of handicapping the player with a purposefully bad output. Also the pins being an output resource that is created out of thin air while everything else is mined just doesn't sit right with me.

Where it falls flat for me is the depth. There are very few actual mechanics and once you realize that you can just make platform size blocks for each basic operation and plug them mindless after each other to create almost anything with ease, it almost trivializes itself. More complex shapes? No problem, just copy paste more operations. The shapes, while cute are just a sheer endless repetition of each other with no clear path of progression or motivation. This is combined with the fact that the research tree is rather bare bones, mostly making it a bit easier or improving the speed. Most shapes, once the quota has been fulfilled, can be removed or you just move on to another place in the galaxy. There are no ressources, (almost) no limitations in terms of space, no waste, no reason to build smart or efficient, so why put in any effort? Just so the number fills up and I can make the next shape.

Sure, the resource management part of Factorio is a lot of fun, but being able to build anything I need "for free" in Shapez 2 feels really freeing. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who's into factory automation games.
