If you go in expecting an XCOM game where you have endless replayability, can build your own squad and get your asses handed to you right from the start, then you might get disappointed. That is not what this game is trying to do. Its strengths are exactly what sets it apart from XCOM.
This very much is a story driven game with XCOM mechanics baked in. You'll find yourself wanting to use the companion characters over custom ones: one because their special abilities are fun and it's a shame to miss out on them, two because the characters are likable and make the game interesting. That said, the story is very linear with little player input, but that does not mean it's not enjoyable. The callbacks to the movies are fun, but at the same time you are very much on Hawks' path and you are not reiterating the movies.
I finished the game on hard mode, and it honestly is on the easy side. It is very forgiving with mistakes. You can respec at any time (which I honestly appreciate) and I used the medbay once at the start as I was getting used to the abilities. There's a lot of options to build up your characters and "base", but you'll never be able to max them all out so chose what matters for you. I like the bond system, but it's hard to max out as well when you can only take 3 companions with you on a mission. So it feels like you never quite reach the full potential before you reach the end of the game.
Performance wise, it can be a little painful how slow enemy turns are. I had it happen once or twice that the AI got stuck and I had to restart the mission. The camera can act up during these phases as well, and overwatch can be finicky, sometimes not triggering without a good explanation as to why, but overall it was nothing gamebreaking.
My hope is that they will add a sandbox mode beside the campaign where you can have a bit more of an XCOM experience with your own squad. It'd be interesting, but with 44 hours to complete the game, it's a fun experience even without that.

The game itself is truly great and would be an absolute recommendation. Unfortunately, with the current 1.2 patch, they fixed some minor issues but replaced them with major bugs, such as desktop crashes, save file issues, and freezes - you name it. Before this patch, the game ran stably for me during 30 hours of gameplay without any of these problems. The worst thing is that saving during missions was either disabled or is bugged now, too, so you can't even protect your progress and have to repeat complete missions if things go sideways or the game crashes.
I will change this review once the game is fixed, but in its current state, it is just frustrating.
Devs and publishers alike should learn to do thorough regression testing before implementing faulty patches.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Is this a fun game in general? Yes.
It it a good XCOM-style tactics/strategy game? I don't think so.
It's very star-wars-y and I mean that in the best way possible. The missions are interluded by semi-rpg-style sections in which you actually walk around your base or specific levels as you talk to people, select answers and get character backgrounds. It's great and the story holds up, too. The character classes are interesting enough (using droids is really cool), there are wepon upgrades and skill trees and the bonding increases bring something slightly fresh to the table.
But on the tactics side, I think it very much falls short.
You are limited to four squad members and the missions themselves are rather short. The character classes are interesting, but you can't really play around with them thanks to that limit. And since you can respec even the class itself, your mercs rarely get a chance to grow on you, but you're not really incentivized to get a bigger roster, anyway. Even if one of my guys gets injured, I can hire a random merc and immediately respec them. The weapon upgrade system isn't bad, but feels a bit lackluster and the skill trees offer mostly stat upgrades and very rarely something actually new.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tStory is OK, typical Disney "bad guys are good guys, good guys are bad guys with some lightsabers thrown in." Nothing that brings out the universe of Star Wars in a good way. Many conversations using common lingo that doesn't exist in the Star Wars universe.
Gameplay is OK: Nothing new in the tactical side of the game. A "clone" of X-Com with less features, combat variety, and nothing truly fleshed out. Builds are a bit of a joke and bonds are not really explained well enough to show overpowered they can be late-game. If you invest in proper bonds you can easily one turn the end boss. Missions are very repetitive (even story missions).
Performance is horrible. This is where the game gets a negative review. Many hitches, buggy pathing, and high-CPU makes this game an unoptimized mess. I would have loved to do an ironman run but glad I turned it off after the first hitching caused one of the operatives to stand in the middle of arena. I waited over a month for a good performance update and the performance of the game actually got worse.
This is a $9.99 game due to the state it shipped in, and the state it is in a month after release.
Overall? I would recommend this game if it's on sale. Not full price. It's a shame the developers deserve better as you can tell there was some good ideas but never full implemented or fleshed out. (IE: flesh out the upgrades to ships, weaponry, or a new game+ mode that is also half-way)

I can't support developers who want to inflate their game by just punishing everyone and making it a slog - harder difficulties should be their own thing with their own rules, not forced upon every player because some people never go outside.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It reminded me of what Baldur's Gate 3 did for the cRPG genre, where its AAA production value made it a very approachable game for newcomers to the genre.
Zero Company is definitely one of the most accessible games in the genre. The game felt easy almost throughout the campaign, even on the second-highest difficulty. But that's coming from someone who has been a fan of these types of games for a long time, so YMMV.
There are plenty of ways to customize and build your squad, as well as synergize their skills with each other. The injury system is lenient, but you still risk losing your squadmates if you get careless. I like that the bond system encourages you to switch up the characters you use for each mission so that they can grow stronger.
As a fan of The Clone Wars series, I love that the game is set during this time period. The story is good, and it enhances my appreciation for this era of Star Wars. I like Hawks' character arc, as they start out cynical about the cause they used to fight for and eventually realize the impact of believing in a just cause can inspire people.

Gameplay is smooth, very fluid once you get the hang of it that it's built around assists and critical damage, rather than positioning and Overwatch like XCOM.
I'm very interested to see what the future will bring for ZCOM, either in the modding scene or the official devs with DLCs or a complete Rebellion sequel.
There were some issues with the enemy turns - had to restart 2 missions when the game got stuck; as well as when the camera bugged out for 10-20 seconds.
I could also feel in the last remaining third of the game it felt a bit rushed with some missing content, I think they were running out of the 50 million budget.
Overall, really left me wanting for more.

Really enjoyed the story setup and the concept of it. There's clearly a lot of love in here. It feels like a modern X-com hiding behind a Star Wars IP. I love X-Com, so this was great.
The big problem I have with it though is that they throw so many heroes at you that it just doesn't matter. I've only ever bothered with two "Create a character" type characters so far, and it was quickly becoming difficult to use one of them over a hero class. The other was a unique support Droid so it had staying power; but for all I know they'll give me a hero version of that later or something.
I won't spoil all the hero types you get because discovery is important to people; but I will say they're just so much better it basically negates the need for other units. For example; one you get right away is a hero that can revive himself for free at full HP with no downsides (where as others would need someone else to revive them and have a damage penalty). Another one you get auto executes enemies for you, which is also obviously massive.
Meanwhile, create a characters just don't have super useful passives and feel a lot more standard.
It feels like the game was designed with you using standard units in mind, but it also feels like a bummer because even on Hard I sort of just steam roll missions due to how strong these hero units are. It's to the point where I can't even field them all at once. I've stopped using the "Main character" entirely just because the other hero units are more unique and a lot stronger feeling,
Overall, it's not an awful game or anything. But between the hero units removing a huge layer of the game, it just didn't have enough on offer to hold me. Hopefully it gets a bit of extra love down the road, but who knows.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI want to like this game as I quite enjoyed the X-com games and I like the Star Wars universe, but this game falls short in so many ways that are just frustrating. The graphics are sometimes good, but usually stutters and does not perform very well overall. The game balance is off, with some things being absurdly strong and others nearly unusable. There are also a lot of bugs in the game in general, such as not being able to use any ability on a soldier unless I switch to a different one and then back. There is another that is just setting my soldier's hp to 1 after they attack an enemy. Audio lines will get cut off, shadows become blocky, the camera gets forced into a wall, and many others.
Overall, there is an okay game underneath all the issues and if they fix the performance and most of the bugs, I'd easily recommend this game to fans of star wars and strategy games. However as it is I cannot recommend it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
