Better Than EA Deserved

I never thought I'd pre-order a turn-based tactical game, but Star Wars Zero Company was the exception. And honestly, I don't regret it. It's not the best game in the genre, and it definitely needed more polish, but I still had a good time with it. I just wish EA had treated this team better.

Gameplay

The biggest surprise for me was how fast the gameplay feels. One of the main reasons I could never really get into XCOM was how slow every turn, animation and transition felt. Zero Company is much faster, making every encounter flow a lot better.

There are a few gameplay annoyances though. One mandatory campaign mission lasted well over two hours. It became exhausting rather than challenging. The game also desperately needs a 2x speed option during enemy turns. Watching enemies take their actions over and over gets old pretty quickly.

One thing I also didn't like was how meaningless the recruitments felt. I turned Hawks into a gunner/support hybrid, Trick was simply too strong damage-wise, Jae's Execution passive was indispensable, and Tel-Rea's Jedi abilities were just too valuable to replace. I tried around 6-7 different recruits throughout the game, but none of them came close to my main squad. Maybe I just couldn't figure out better builds, but that's how the balance felt during my playthrough.

Story and Characters

I can't say I fully understood the story. Even though I've watched a few Star Wars movies, I eventually lost track of what was happening and mostly kept playing for the gameplay. The universe wasn't the easiest to follow.

The characters, however, are much stronger than the story itself. The voice acting is excellent across the board. Hawks, Kabbey, Runa, Trick and Tel-Rea were all memorable, and Runa's performance was especially fantastic. The attention to detail in narrative is really strong though, that's something you never see done in this genre.

Presentation and Technical Issues

The atmosphere is excellent. The graphics, art direction and overall presentation all feel very Star Wars, and they do a great job creating that feeling.

Unfortunately, the game also has quite a few technical problems. The camera can be awkward at times, some systems like Overwatch occasionally don't work properly, and there's a bit of jank throughout the game.

I also experienced random pauses between turns, sometimes lasting several seconds, and occasionally enemies would take nearly thirty seconds before doing anything. Most cutscenes also have noticeable stuttering during their first few frames. Optimization isn't great either. The game definitely needed more polish before release.

Final Thoughts

Star Wars Zero Company is a good, pretty well-made game, even if it's a bit rough around the edges. I don't regret pre-ordering it, but I also don't think everyone should. I'd wait a few months and pick it up on sale. I also think $40 would've been a much fairer price than $50. That said, it's still not as fun as Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. That game is still the king of this genre for me.

Still, I hope people support this studio. They clearly made something with passion, despite the usual EA treatment of its developers.

If you are on the fence with buying this game, ask yourself the following: What are you expecting?

If you are looking for a spiritual successor to X-COM you will ultimately feel disappointed for what this game does not provide.

If you are looking for a decently well-made Star Wars title that does the IP justice in a world where it has lost significant credibility (Thanks Disney), you will be delightfully surprised.

At first I loved this game and was overjoyed by the vibe and the fact we had a Star Wars "X-COM". As I continued to play (I'm about 1/2 done with story at the time of writing this), I felt summarily underwhelmed. This game is NOT X-COM. Although the game shares the DNA of the former title, it is more like "essence" of X-COM with a healthy dose of Star Wars lore, atmosphere, and world-building. After about 5 hours of the game my opinion of it shifted from positive to negative. I consider myself a die-hard X-COM enjoyer and I've logged a stupid number of hours playing through the hardest setting on X-COM 2 war of the chosen. Expecting this game to live up to that level of decision making, strategic layering, tense game-play, and overall excellence, you will be disappointed as I was. After realizing this, I shifted my expectations of the game and I began to enjoy it again.

Zero company shines in it's atmosphere, voice-acting, and pace of game play. X-COM is slow, stressful and intense. Zero Company plays like a faster-paced, more "cozy" version of X-COM (if there is such a thing lol). Rather than slow strategic choices around flanking, team composition, and upgrades/research, combat is based around ability "combos". This design choice felt inspired and really works. It's a bit unsettling as an X-COM veteran because some early game Zero Company turns feel weirdly over-powered and like a late-game X-COM experience. For example, you can have a character sprint across the map, melee a strong enemy into an abyss, killing them instantly, firing your blaster, using an "ultimate" twice to do high area damage, and then another operator can give that same character one more move to run back to cover. That unit killed like 4 enemies single-handedly in a single turn which feels simultaneously over-powered but also quite satisfying. In general, choices matter a lot less, and even on the hardest difficulty I've only failed and had to re-play a mission once. The level-up systems and base-building do feel like the "modern-slop" that most modern games unfortunately produce. I wouldn't go as far as to say this game is "AI slop" but some moments do come close to that vibe.

The core game play loop is satisfying: You run a standard mission then return to base to chat with your "operators" or team-members. These conversations feel meaningful and weighty as they give back-story to the characters and often spawn missions that relate to each character. This was a very strong aspect of the game and brought a new flavor to the "X-COM" formula. These interactions also allow for a light RPG feeling that is reminiscent of KOTOR or Mass Effect. You can strengthen "bonds" (effectively the level-up system) between operators which are formed in combat which feels a little "meh" to be honest. The choices for stat increases are random and the system feels a bit uninspired. Additionally, the black market (shop) provides new items to purchase and your base can be upgraded. Both use credits so decisions there feel somewhat important, however nowhere near the decisions made in X-COM. X-COM base building and research is sorely missed in this title, and it feels a bit like an afterthought in Zero Companies base design. Lastly, you can spend "intel" and improve "influence" in sectors which typically provide small bonuses again which feel contrived and have little to no bearing on your overall success in future missions.

Overall, after shifting my perspective on what this game provides, I do indeed recommend you try it, so long as you knowing what you are getting. You are NOT getting X-COM. Comparatively, this game is about a 4/10 and it does not reach the very high bar that X-COM has set for the genre. However, if you love Star Wars more than a refined X-COM experience, and can stomach the "X-COM light" flavor, I think you'll really enjoy it. There are moments in the game that feel like the best parts of KOTOR and Mass Effect, as well the Jedi series.

Bit Reactor tried their best and I feel they went for a more "moderate" approach rather than the hardcore and tactical experience that X-COM provides.

After playing another 20 hours and getting to the last mission, I have more thoughts.

The story is quite good. Without giving away spoilers, there are some very fun connections to other Star Wars titles, which were a pleasant surprise. There are some unexpected twists, and overall I would rate the story as a 9/10 for a tactical game. I was going to bump my overall score to a 8.5/10 for the game, however on the last mission I experienced a VERY frustrating bug. Without saying too much, the final mission is essentially 3 standard missions packed into one. On the last phase, I hit a soft-lock and had to restart. Not only was this frustrating and immersion breaking, the game did not allow me to restart from the last phase. I had to restart the entire sequence. Furthermore, it did not allow any mid-mission saves, so I could not re-load an earlier save. I lost nearly 3 hours difficult and tedious playtime in the finale and had to redo the entire thing. Not only is this a very very negative and frustrating bug, it also dissuades me from future play-throughs as my trust in the game engine has been shaken. These bugs need to be fixed, and my overall opinion of the game has gone down. Prior to this moment, I hadn't experience any major bugs - I had to re-load a mission or two due to other soft-locks, but none were nearly as punishing as this final experience.

Final verdict after beating the game seeing all it has to offer (the good and bad), I feel it deserves a 7.5/10, which feels generous upon final reflection.

People spend hard-earned money and time on gaming and bugs these problematic are unacceptable.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tFinished the campaign at ~35 hours. It's essentially XCOM meets Mass Effect — squad tactics combined with relationship-building and optional side quests with your teammates. The concept is great and the setting alone carries a lot of goodwill.

The problem is the game doesn't evolve. The first 5 hours are basically the entire loop — after that you're just repeating the same combat patterns with marginal variation. By the end I went from carefully clearing every enemy to just running past encounters to finish missions, which says a lot about how much the moment-to-moment gameplay kept me engaged.

Progression is thin. Weapon variety is limited to about 5 guns total — no finding, no swapping, no real weapon progression — and all you're really doing is upgrading mods. You start with 1 mod slot and it takes around 12 hours just to unlock the second one out of 4 total. Ability upgrades for your character and teammates are similarly underwhelming — things like +1 meter of range that you barely notice in practice.

Technically it's rough too. Animations start lagging noticeably later in the game, and I had two full freezes that forced me to restart the mission entirely.

I still enjoyed my time with it enough to recommend it — the setting, characters, and relationship system are genuinely fun — but it needs real improvement on the progression and optimization side. Feels like a solid foundation for a sequel more than a fully realized game as-is.\t\t\t\t\t

I'll change this the moment it's corrected, but having to go into the UE5 .ini files in %localappdata% for the game and finding the config file to change the resolution because it had BARELY any options is baffling and I can't remember the last time I've seen a game launch with that issue.

To those with the same problem:

1. Press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and hit Enter.

2. Locate your game's folder. In this case SWZeroCompany.

3. Navigate to: Saved \\ Config \\ WindowsNoEditor (or Windows, WindowsClient).

4. Open GameUserSettings.ini with a text editor like Notepad.

5. Use CTRL + F and search for one of the following:

ResolutionSizeX=
ResolutionSizeY=

Put in your desired values.

Again, baffling that the game itself had virtually no resolution options for me regardless if I had windowed, fullscreen, or borderless.

Insane in 2026.

EDIT: I am working to play through the game so I can review it on its merits. Performancewise is solid, quite so with good cutscene quality.

A few people commenting have indicated they have options, so this may be an early launch bug affecting some configurations. I am going to change my review to positive but keep the instructions in place, as it appears there are still many that found the review helpful and likely suffered the same issue.

The game is good.
Technical stuff: I had zero crashes in 20 hours. No bugs either. No soft locks. Playing on 8/10 graphics without DLS. (Perhaps because I have AMD?)

Gameplay first(because this is a game):
This is NOT Xcom3. In Xcom, you create firepower by maneuver (flank, concentrate). In Xcom 2, well, I love the game, but it's Xcom Ambush.
In Zero Company, firepower comes from combining unit abilities. That is the massive difference. Cover is massively reduced in importance, the reason being highly destructible cover where misses with regular firearms can destroy your cover. Therefore the quasi-auto high-damage crits of the Xcom games are not present here. Crits are more a bonus than the deciding factor in battle. Imagine 4 enemies: 1 misses, 1 misses but his shots still destroy your cover. Now your dude is standing in the open and 2 more enemies to go. In Xcom 1 or 2, that would be death and the player could do nothing during the enemies turn. Hence there is a "downed" mechanic so in effect, you have basically 200% health with 2 limit breaks (first time downed, return with half health, no resource required. Second time downed, same.) And since cover cannot be the decisive factor for damage output, they move the focus to activated abilities - e.g. 1 squad mate gets to shoot at your target for free - and very specific passives - e.g. +10/20/30/etc% damage with crits on overwatch, or "+10% for ability-caused free shots".

The core "player skill" has shifted from positioning to ability-combination.

And that is why some players dislike it. It is a fundamentally different approach. You will not win (on hard) by trying to flank individual opponents - hence the maps are small - but by combining the skills of your squad.
E.g. Squad member A activates ability that lets squad mate B fire for free at the same target. Then mate A activates ability that targets enemy that is being attacked. Now A attacks same guy, and B piles on. So while you only actively fire twice, because of the abilities overall 4 shots are fired. And enemy health accounts for that. Where in Xcom, you need 3-4 shots to down average enemy, in Zero Company some take 5 or 6 shots. Not a problem when you combine abilities, but if you try to just "outflank", you will not have the damage output. Some say: just overwatch all the time. Didn't work for me. Situationally useful, but not nearly as omnipotent as in Xcom2.
Once you understand - and accept - that this is what "good play" constitutes in THIS game, then you'll have fun.

Progression mainly through character perks and passive skills and cross-training. The guns don't really change, the active and passive abilities give more firepower.

Presentation and writing are excellent - some say it's not, but it really, objectively is. Characters behave like actual adult characters with individual personalities, instead of flat drama queen stereotypes that you couldn't describe outside of how they look.

So, depending on how lucky you are on the technical side - again, I had 0 problems - this is a fantastic game IF you do not demand XCOM 3 with lightsabers.\t\t\t\t\t

Unfortunately, I was told that the tactical combat would be a huge upgrade to what we've seen. It's a sidegrade at best, I'm sorry. The advancement is little more than "do 1 more damage." \n\t\t\t\t\tBit reactor actually made a solid game here, fun tactics, fun combat, it feels Star Warsy, and this is from someone who dislike Disney stuff. The story isn't gonna blow you away, it's how can I say, "Star Warsy" and if you know what that means than you at least know it's faithful enough. This is the best Star Wars game to have come out in recent years, and in a long time.

A note, presenting Seperatist characters in a more nuanced light was refreshing compared the the Clone Wars TV Show but I digress. Solid game, it's Xcom dna is rooted from Bit Reactors former experience working with those games. The overall combat system is superior mechanically, just from the directional overwatch adverse to the omni directional system Xcom 2 shared. It still has things where characters can obtain more AP, usually from allied units like Astro Mechs or your commander. However it seems more tilted in the players field than it is against.

Fifty bucks is a beat on the steep end, so if your hesitant still wait for a sale and give it a shot. The player onboarding is a tad slower than I would have liked.\t\t\t\t\t

First Impressions & Gameplay:

The core gameplay loop and overall game design in the first hour are genuinely engaging, well-crafted, and make me want to dive in much deeper. There is a lot of potential here, and I truly want to recommend this game. However, I have to leave a negative review for now due to severe, immersion-breaking engine optimization and scheduling issues that make a smooth experience impossible even on top-tier hardware.

Technical Breakdown (Devs, please look into this)
Test System: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, 32GB DDR5, running at 4K.

The engine suffers from a massive main render-thread bottleneck, poor multithreading distribution, and severe frame-pacing/traversal spikes:

Single/Few-Thread Saturation:
Under 4K native, total CPU utilization hovers around ~20–22%, but thread analysis (via Process Lasso / OSD) shows the entire game workload is essentially serialized onto 2–3 logical threads on CCD0 (3D V-Cache). CCD1 remains entirely idle.

Upscaling Ineffectiveness (DLSS):
At 4K, framerates fluctuate between 75 and 110 FPS (averaging ~100 FPS). Toggling DLSS on or off yields virtually identical FPS and GPU power draw. The GPU ALUs are starved because the CPU cannot dispatch draw calls / render commands any faster.

Frame Pacing & 1% Low Drops:

Even when locking the game to 60 FPS (where GPU utilization drops to ~60%), the frame pacing remains erratic.

In complete stillness (static scene / pause menu with minimal particle motion), 1% Lows regularly sit at 50–55 FPS, occasionally dipping to 45 FPS.

Performing a simple 360° camera rotation in place causes immediate, repeatable 1% Low drops down to 30 FPS.

Engine Pipeline Bottleneck:
Since the 1% Low drops occur even with an aggressive frame cap and low GPU utilization, the engine pipeline is stalling synchronously on the CPU—likely caused by blocking asset/LOD lookups, unoptimized visibility/occlusion culling passes, or synchronous garbage collection / main-thread draw call submission.

Verdict
The gameplay and art direction deserve praise, but the current state of multithreading and render-thread scheduling ruins the experience. Once the developers decouple the main render pipeline and fix the hitching during camera pan / asset queries, I will gladly switch this to a positive review.\t\t\t\t\t

1) Keyboard issues seem to be linked to USB-Hubs. I have my input devices connected to a KVM Switch and no other game has issues with this, but ZCom does. Connecting the keyboard directly to the PC USB Port prevents the interruptions.

2) I was able to get FrameGen to work, this was apparently related to the GPU HW Scheduler setting in Windows 11. With FrameGen I can get around 100 FPS which makes the game definitely playable for me.

As others have said, the game has technical issues. Frame Gen is not working for some (me included), input is disconnecting for a fraction of a second for some (me included) and performance in general is not that great.

The game has a great presentation, the gameplay seems good and they even include accessibility features, but as of right now, I would WAIT for some patches/hotfixes or at least acknowledgement by the devs that these issues are being worked on

There's other titles doing 'Xcom' strategic and tactical combat part better / keep it relevant for longer.

If you're looking for decent Star Wars game with a story, this works.
Game is actually great for first few hours while The Force holds, then you'll start noticing certain patterns.

On tactical level Zero Company is repetition of 4 misions, forever.
* Kill All
* Touch Objective / Hold Objective and Escape
* Beat The Timer(save someone) and Escape
* Boss battle (kill boss, deal with reinforcements on timer/hp%)

Sure, maps change. But this is it.
Map loads, you see everyting, enemies know where you are, you auto deploy and start fight. Bang bang, 2 overwatches later and done, next load.
If you want decent(great) team, you will learn to use same 3 operators forever (main+2) with 1 being flex for story misions and your personal prefference if you like some character for story reasons.
You will not think about building anti-droid, anti-force-user, anti-swarmer(lots of weak enemies), anti-tank(single fat enemies), anti-anything... characters. And you will not think about swaping them due their role.
Just repeat same thing. Everything is predictable.
At one point you will get bit of power spike that makes your operators bit stronger and more customizable - not that it feels much different. I would actually prefer it didn't happen and you got +1-2 limit to operator squad size, would likely feel beter.

Repetition gets broken apart a bit with story/main misions which consist of you running from encounter to encounter with bit of story and maybe a fun cameo apperance(s).

There's one interesting, decent and positive - but badly explained function in game (Bond System) that min-maxers will want to look at how it actually works. Make sure your main is MEDIC, hell - make everyone not maxed on bond(s) medics and spam those stim-heals into all directions before extracting.

On Operator (character) customization side. You could probably click 'auto assign random perks+gear for each mission' if it existed and you would be fine on normal-hard difficulty. Full team of sniper medics, no issue. Ful lteam of pistol wielding... heavies, sure. Repeater on Sniper, why not. There's no limitations, everything just works - and for this it doesn't really feel special. There's story characters with (partial)unique mechanics and you'll likely use those anyway, but you could also use 4 randoms. Intel focused 4th operator would help you max you out faster on influence table, so that could be usefull.

On strategic level. You don't really need to think about it, even on hardest difficulty. Operations, meh - maybe pick areas that reward additional intel/credits first. That's it, then just run whatever you can.

It has potential to be better, varied and replayable (and harder from tactical point, not raw numbers - in time of AI... the ai is quite bad). But devs said no DLCs / no modding support so... drink hopium sales are decent enough for publisher to want throw more money at it.

At the moment. Unless you are diehard Star Wars fan, wait for sale - its a 25-30 bucks game.
XCom players... install LongWar of the Chosen and press new game. Even Chimera squad likely had more tactical decision making, it definitely had AI with half a brain compared to ZC's - which in case of B1 Battle Droids actually makes sense.

I will still finish it. For the story.

Devs making this went practically broke during development, which means they likely had to cut and release whatever they had near the end of it. They were all sent to unpaid leave weeks before release. Which explains why this game has unfinished/unpolished/unrealized potential vibes all along.
I understand how that goes as I was in same situation as game dev years back now. I wish good luck to Devs, may decent sales bring at least few of you back to work if not all.

A quick patch 2.0 would do wonders, introduce more weapons and wider custumization (it's obvious you had plans for them, models are made, certain npcs/enemies/friendlies use them). Work on AI a bit more. Give enemies (class) ability or two. Put in upgrade for squad deployment size (+1,+2). Put FoG of War into maps as game option, to get a feel what people think about it.
Or at bare minimum, at least open game to modders - bones are good, let others provide the meat. ;)
