\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI replayed Prey last year and loved it more than I did the first time. I almost went immediately into NG+ to play it again. Sadly, that kind of game is rare to find and Arkane won't be making anything like that any time soon. Abiotic Factor was very close and I beat that twice!
This is Prey, again. I'm excited to see a game tackle that specific type of game and do it well, other than me getting lost multiple times trying to find X or Y. The reviews are accurate. If you're a big fan of Prey, Bioshock, or System Shock, this game will scratch that itch.
The issues I have with the game:
The difficulty being WAY too easy on the standard difficulty. The real issue is you can't change the difficulty after you start a game so I'm stuck being overpowered and not feeling threatened by anything (Though the game is still fun). Play on 1999 or the hardest difficulty. Turn on protected quicksaves if you have to.
The UI can be a little finnicky like scrapping taking a second and you scrap a LOT. You can use R to rotate items, though the game doesn't tell you in the controls or on the UI.
I didn't need to use food at all during the entire game. I scrapped everything I found because of healing being a non-issue. Very badly balanced. Ammo is incredibly abundant so I ended up scrapping a lot of ammo, too. I scrapped medkits, too because of said healing from mutagens.
Some of the mutamods are pretty lame and for how hard credits are to come by, it can be a little deflating when you buy mutamods you never end up using. Most of them are finnicky to use, don't work half the time, or are overpowered (Moth). Two of them make stealing even easier than it already is but I didn't feel I needed them most of the game. The AI of the enemies is a little derpy...
Combat is too easy. Things are very easy to kill and with an abundance of ammo everywhere you never have to worry about ammo. There's clever ways to kill stuff but I never needed to bother... which is a letdown. Combat needs to be harder. AI needs to be better and monsters need to be harder to kill. Stealth isn't incentivised at all.
And you don't need to use the heal dome gene reconstruction unless you have debuffs from dying or other things. Don't waste 50 credits multiple times like I did. The tutorial didn't really explain that and I thought it was neeed to spawn at that heal dome or something.
The game is still very much worth buying! Play on one of the two harder difficulties. It sounds like a lot of issues... and looking back, there is a lot of issues. I STILL recommend the game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI was having a good time until i bricked my run by having the audacity to explore around the map and wander into an area with a seemingly immortal rabbit. I am now stuck in a loop of death because it starts attacking me while I'm still spawning in. Now you're probably thinking "why not just load a previous save?". I would love to. unfortunately this games autosaves overwrite your quick saves for some reason so now i just get to choose between 3 instant death timelines. not sure whose idea the bunny was or who thought it was a good idea to have the game auto save over your manual saves. All i know is that both of those poor choices have brought me to the point of needing to completely restart in order to be able to continue to play the game i bought.

Despite what the main screen says, I found that 1999 difficulty ended up seeming rather weak even though it was already a higher level than "intended" (one of the bosses died in just 3-4 hits), and I ended up with a completely overflowing inventory of health and ammo by the end, having never really even gotten close to running out for the entire game. One of the mutamods,octopus heart, also completely trivializes 95% of combat via making you all but literally immortal. Similarly, several of the guns become able to one-shot even the strongest of the common enemies after only a bit of work. It lacks atmosphere or charm from the opening, neither settling on effective horror or comedy; it's neither scary nor funny to me in the first thirty minutes of gameplay, and that runs so at-odds with the spookiness of System Shock 2 or the atmosphere and creativity of Prey. It's just a mass of very familiar references - repeated 0451s followed by 42s, 47s etc, with a customer service AI voiceover saying all the generic things you'd expect from a game not so much paying homage as parodying its genre - but doing so by simply replicating tropes from those games 'but silly', rather than with cleverly written satire, or even just goofy but funny punchlines. It's sort of anti-funny. Not even dad-joke sort of unfunny-funny, just.. humourless 'hey, remember that thing you/your parents liked???'
It seems to lack technical/gameplay depth. The physics are janky and unrewarding - even trying to move boxes to climb on them runs into a lot of oversized bounding boxes on environmental props, bouncing or blocking props you move and flinging them in random directions/getting them stuck vibrating inside other objects over and over even in the first few corridors if you just wanted to move a chair out of the way to check behind a desk. Invisible walls seem to be everywhere when handling physics objects, even or especially in areas that are obviously telegraphing that box climbing, old reliable, is an intended option.
There's a general sense of poorly considered design, with tutorial popups appearing and disappearing rapidly, so even if you're familiar with the genre you're left wondering what they were trying to tell you if they decide to pop up when you're busy with something that seems interesting, or dangerous.
Audiologs rely upon UI features that aren't activated until you find a certain object, so you can't play them if you miss the initial prompt to do do by hitting the Use key a second time, and you can't replay them - including one that gives you a keycode to unlock a door - if you mishear or don't memorise it while busy doing other things, or loud environmental alarms go off, or the sentry gun next to that particular log starts shooting in the middle of playback, you're out of luck.
This cannot have been missed during testing - I guess it was just ignored.
There are almost no graphics settings, merely a low/medium/high + render scale, and it defaulted to High@1.25x renderscale on my machine, causing the main menu to run at around 3fps due to the default resolution being borderless windowed, i.e. native, which in my case means 4k. Tedious and uncomfortable to wrestle a slowly jolting, delayed mousecursor through the settings menus to drop the renderscale and make the menus usable/the game playable on a 3070.
The game stutters every so often but is generally smooth once you slam the renderscale down, and that really shouldn't be defaulting to upscaling from 4k.

Decisions i did like:
-the boss fights having alternative ways to deal with them to either stealth them or save ammo
-the puzzles are fun to either find the things you need or figure it out (one did piss me off in the security section with Dhalia
-the upgrades actually feeling like they do something
- no quest markers
QOL suggestions
- name the sections of the notes tab for where we found it same with the voice logs
-being able to play a voice log and leave the pda
-pull up the message that correlates to the keypad like say a note says the code is 9999 it will be off to the side because with the way the notes and voice messages is currently its very difficult to figure out what code goes to what
decisions i didnt like:
- If you fall off a ledge the wrong way or even drop from a ledge that seems survivable you will die
-the blueprint requirement to upgrade weapons seemed a bit too much considering the game gives you very little cash and seemingly no way to sell stuff for more
-the cone of vision of Steve is wider then the light he projects so seeing the light go past and going for a door will get you caught
- while i do appreciate it the hacking made many of the puzzles trivial
-on 1999 mode it says scarcer resources but I had more then enough ammo that if I started the game with the amount of ammo i ended the game with id still have at least 3 stacks left over
Things that will get fixed hopefully:
-having the flashlight on blocks the sight on the upgraded pistol
-this game pulls a considerable amount of ram at 7 GB not even RE9 pulled that much
-if there is a corpse at the bottom of a ladder and get off the ladder you will die
- spoiler for one of the sections later on in the game Charlie didnt even interact with me throughout the entire crew section until i got the last head i feel like he should start at the beginning and reveal himself first and then start hunting you and never give you a break i didnt even realize there was something supposed to be hunting me until i was holding the last head and walked into him thinking wait why am i taking damage\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhile this is a "negative" review, if Steam had a "Neutral" option, this game would probably deserve it. Alright, if you've stumbled across this game at random and you aren't really invested in this sort of thing, should you buy it? No, definitely not. Go play System Shock 2 and Deus Ex and Bioshock and Dead Space and Prey and maybe even Singularity and all of the other wonderful games out there that this is influenced by and often parodying. If you're like me, a lifelong obsessive fan of the "shock-like" or "immersive sim" genre, hungry and desperate for new content after having gobbled up every one of those games over and over for years, it's a maybe. On sale. If you're feeling especially patient. And you don't have a lot of responsibilities that monopolize your gaming time, which is unlikely, considering we, as a demographic, are all getting kinda old. Alright, so... why? Well... it's just a really inconsistent and less than satisfying product all around, which is especially frustrating, since when it's fun, it almost feels like I'm playing one of those other, better games I've listed.
It's a lot of good ideas, poorly executed in a way that frustrates the hell out of me. Apparently, a lot, since I cut four long paragraphs of my thoughts out of this review to fit into the Steam Review character limit. I'm a lifelong devotee to games like this. I caught every reference, understood every meta-joke. I put 0451 into the first place it asked for a four-digit code without thinking, and was excited to learn it was our Janitor designation instead, though that's only referenced once or twice. I'm also, coincidentally, obsessed with Rogue Legacy, a classic indie that was amongst the first to be in the rogue-like vs -lite argument, and also centers a mechanic where you have to deal with randomized "quirks" when you die. This led me to more disappointment when I learn there's really only a handful, and at least three boil down to "you make noise sometimes and if you're in stealth you get caught". I grew up on Myst, spent three months filling pages of notes on Blue Prince, and ended up spending some two hours poring over possible decodes for a sticky-note clue to one of the security systems only to find out I didn't have all of the information I needed in the environment. Every single thing in this game that should've been tailor-made to appeal to me, specifically, ended up either disappointing or frustrating. And that sucks, because I think there's a timeline, out there, where this was one of my favorite games, nestled in the "My Babies" (yes, it's actually called that) folder of my Steam Library alongside its parents and cousins. I love a lot of the references. The level design is dynamic and fun to explore. The story, when it's actually trying, has real potential to be compelling. That one especially. It feels, just a bit, like the humor is a shield for insecurity in the writing of the game, and undermines the entire experience. I think the biggest issue is the twist isn't even close to a twist.
Longtime imsim gamers are looking for the twist from the start these days, and it's often something these stories are written around, leading you down different potential clues or theories. I saw the so-called twist coming from a mile away, and the reveal isn't even really treated as a big moment, no grand reveal or swell of emotion. It's presented, deadpan, by the perpetrator, who promptly exits stage nowhere and is no longer in the plot. Also, it's stolen. Sure, I might not like that one as much, but that's literally the BInfinite twist. Directly. Sure, the twists in SS2 and Bioshock are similar, but at least that's Big Ken stealing from himself. In fact, before I walked into the "here's the twist" room, I muttered a little prayer, hoping I was wrong. I wasn't. And it felt like a final straw.

Thoroughly enjoyable Shock-type game that understands what they're all about and gets it right. Atmospheric, creepy, surprisingly well animated and voice acted and wonderfully immersive.
Beware the ladders though, one of them made me schizophrenic. 3 of my 4 deaths so far have been ladders, you need to push yourself into them and just trust they'll do what they need to. If you fight it, you'll die.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I would say, if you like what you see on the storepage, thats exactly what you get, but that isn't true. There is so much love in this game, it feels very rewarding to explore and actually find stuff in some corners of the areas.
I completed the game in about 10 hours (but didnt found all there is by far) and i enjoyed it so much. It constantly reminded me of the times where devs put alot of heart in their products. I can see myself coming back at some point maybe even trying to get some of the challenging achievements (not killing stuff etc)
Only things i didn't like :
-The Map is almost useless. It can help sometimes, but the controls are annoying and it doesnt show much.
-The inventory management is to slow. I wish there was a quicker way to store things (or maybe i just havent found out how). You have to drag and drop every single item to storage.
-One optional area that is very frustrating. It just wasn't fun to the point where i thought i softlocked myself because i was dying over and over again until i figured out what to do. (But at least that part is optional)

Would potentially wait to buy until they add even further QoL and other patches as such, but it's a pretty solid gameplay, smooth controls (aside of the ladders that hopefully will be fixed) and there's ton of paths that can be taken and different ways to tackle the objectives, which is refreshing for a game released nowadays.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is perfect if you love System Shock, Thief, Bioshock 1/2, and Deus Ex, and it's surprisingly long for how affordable it is. Level design hits all the right notes and definitely evokes the feeling of exploring a deck in System Shock 2 or a hub in Deus Ex. There are plenty of alternate routes and vents to crawl around in along with endless secrets to find.
Plus, the devs are great, when I got softlocked they personally reached out and fixed my issue, which I really didn't expect. I pray that they someday make a sequel that expands on this game because I've been waiting so long for an immersive sim that measures up to System Shock and Deus Ex, or even the first two Bioshock games. Easy recommendation!!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
