The game had the right formula, but a horrible execution, it feels like attempt to shove boomer shooter to a modern audience but all is wrapped in a game that despite being firmly playtested received no proper adressing from devs and feels incomplete after months.
So some of the issues:
- Game forces you to play entire story once having only 3 weapons at your disposal, rest of equipment is behind beating one difficulty mode this way, and beside experience being downright boring, having a short range tommygun and shotgun against long range attacking Arachnoids, a massive lava monster or a robot that switches locations every attack is NOT an enjoyable fight
- Bossess are not equally finished, one boss features 3 stages, each being randomly selected out of 5-6 possible variants, plus an enraged mode with its own set of attacks, making every encounter unique, other just throws fireballs or summons shockwaves for entire fight…
- The humor in the game is rather eh, not a new thing in sam games but jokes here get thrown so much it's hard to not cringe, especially when sams yap the same 3 lines of dialogue for every interaction or they try to replay the same conversation over and over again, due to it being interrupted by NETRICSA
- Enemy AI is a mess, they tend to get stuck due to uneven geometry
- Balance is all over the place, one Sam has stronger ability compared to all others
- Many minor features requested throught playtest by community were never adressed, such as making NETRICSA display enemies in 3D instead of 2D pngs, like in every single one entry in the whole serious sam franchise, including console exclusives.
- If you expect gameplay to get entertaining once you get past the horrible 3 weapons only introduction, it does, but only for when you experience new weapons and met the single new boss, then it gets repetitive in an instant
- A weird decision to lock healing behind using melee attacks, which may sound like adaptation requiring strat during normal fights, but at least two of the bosses barely spawn any enemies, leaving you unable to heal when fighting them.
- Elite enemies, while a cool concept, have just inflated HP, no new attacks, just tougher reskins.
- Weapon progression system is very wrong, some weapons are very useful, others are useless, too many pistol variants which you unlock in later playthrough, at time they become obsolete, Reptiloid magic spell book is complete waste of weapon slot.
- Weapon wheel remain as glitched and uncomfortable to pick as across every beta test and release, they could've take inspiration from SS4's.
- Absolutely HORRIBLE cutscenes for bosses, a pre-rendered videos with no smooth transition, too low resolution for 1440p monitor and done for absolutely no reason, as quality of these cutscenes is no better than what we see in-game, post intro cutscene bosses need extra few frames to spawn which is super visible.
- Broken secrets where Lava Golems spawn and die upon touching… lava, there are at least 2 of those
- Difficulty progressively grows over gameplay, nice addition if not the fact it does 3 things: increase rarity of weapon drops, increase enemy HP and increase chances of elite eneies to spawn which also have more HP, so the game just increases damage and hp, not include any new special weapons, abilities, new enemies or new attack strategies for existing ones.

Majority of the feedback and bug reports were ignored and all the same issues are still present in the final release version. Issues such as forced open mic with no push to talk, crippling host/client issues causing desyncs or crashes, no ability to rejoin a run in progress, and upgrades that have wrong descriptions or just do not work at all.
Low difficulty was a main pressure point from the playtests and while they have increased the amount of enemies in arenas some are nearly impossible if you get them too early into a run. And the multiplayer scaling can be absolutely brutal and make this issue much worse making game actually more frustrating when playing with friends.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tDecided to post my review after unlocking all the characters, weapons, going through all the levels, difficulties and unlocking all the achievements except one (still have to die 100 times, fascinating challenge).
This is a game clearly made by people who don't understand Serious Sam and have no respect for the series. That's the feeling I got after my first few minutes playing the game and it's been confirmed over and over during those hours I spent experiencing it on a deeper level.
First of all, this is a buggy mess. Can't even list how many bugs I encountered in both solo and multiplayer games : people falling through the floor, keybinds not working, sound issues, people hard locked after a load on the mutator screen, doors and scripts simply not working, enemies stuck inside walls or not moving, it's just some of the first few things that come to mind and it's endless and frustrating.
Gameplay is awful, you're at the mercy of rng to be allowed to play through the first few levels, game can simply decide to not give you a gun. Have fun going through kleer alley with a pistol and a smg.
It's also a very grindy game. Finding trinkets, unlocking guns, unlocking upgrades, unlocking characters, it's all a pointless grind. Trinkets are one way to get a decent gun or two early on but that's fully up to rng if you find one or not.
Visual and sound designs are the worst in the series by far and that's coming from a long time Serious Sam fan who enjoyed all the games even Serious Sam 2 and 3, two games that get unfairly criticized imo. The dialogues are unbearable to listen to, don't even want to think about them.
Serious Sam fan or not : don't waste your money on this game. I highly doubt it's gonna get any decent fixes or content updates. Shame on those devs for releasing such an awful product instead of honoring this great series as best they could like the siberian mayhem devs did.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tthe serious sam series is my favorite of all time (around 1.4K hours between every mainline entry/SS fusion) so it pains me to write this, and im not going to be extreme and say "theres NOTHING TO LIKE HERE this game KILLED MY FAMILY!!!!" but for the TL;DR it's a 4-5/10 "fine" game, like at its VERY worst it's generic. let's talk positives first.
the single GREATEST compliment i can give this game, the one that convinced me to buy it, is that the serious sam formula is actually preserved!!! i'm VERY impressed! 2 pistol shots for a beheaded, 4 rockets for an adult arachnoid, etc. etc., very nice and the new movement options are kinda "get out of jail free cards" when in a bad spot but the whole "backpedal + strafing" is still totally viable which is very engaging at points like always. one last positive i can give is that exploration is rewarded sometimes. that's all. now let's talk chuff.
-music is generic but far from "bad".
-environments are huge while the biggest horde i've seen as of yet is around 20+ monsters?
-huge grind (not inherently bad) to unlock new weapons COUPLED WITH an insanely repetitive room structure/architecture and overall "run" and barely any randomization. 4 hours in and everything is bleeding together in my head which is a quick way to KILL a roguelike/lite.
-upgrades are boring stat boosts or health/armor refills. there's only one real "synergy" i noticed (killing sprees/combos) and that one, requiring multiple level ups of investment, won't help you during bosses (not literally, but the difference will be MARGINAL)
-shooting isn't satisfying. a crime in a game where you are MOSTLY SHOOTING!!! double jumping and dashing, the two new movement options are...ok? but they feel VERY floaty and imprecise and you cant tell when your feet are back on the ground.
-a fragmented multiverse is the tagline yet only 5 playable sams...passable, but feels like bare minimum. this whole game can be summarized by "bare minimum" which sucks ASS because an infinitely replayable roguelite with the addictive formula of serious sam i believe could be an absolute knock outta the park. sadly, it isn't there (yet? if there are going to be post-game patches of any kind).

Levels up upgrades are pointless and not exciting, with many of them being "heal your health", or "repair your armor". Weapons aren't very exciting, and so many of them have negative traits that make them not worth picking up.
When you complete a challenge room, it scatters money ALL OVER THE MAP. Meaning you have to waste your time walking in circles to pick up every single coin around a huge map, instead of the game just... giving you the money. It's hilarious, like the game is saying oh yeah congratulations now waste your time picking up your reward.
Gunplay is weak. Enemy A.I is basic, they just walk straight, get stuck, or sometimes don't move at all. Often times you spend a minute or two walking down halls, to enter a GIANT room, with 10 enemies.
It's just a snoozefest all over. I've never played a serious sam game before, but as a Roguelite AND as a Multiplayer FPS, this game has failed in many fronts.

Weapons take way too long to unlock and they don't really matter. I've been playing for over 5 hours using the same basic set of weapons - pistol, single shotgun and tommygun. With slight stat variations. Serious Sam should have some weapon management at its core, but here it's totally fine if you just use the tommygun forever with infinite ammo. And the game extremely rarely gives you anything else, unless you grind for currency (which takes a very long time to get). Once you find a "good" weapon, there's no reason to use anything else than that ever.
Gameplay is very samey and repetitive, it feels more like a cheaper version of modern Doom games with the health restocking melee kills. In most fights I'm just spamming double jump + dash in the air while circling enemy groups, and if I get low on health I just spam the melee finisher till I'm healed again. Doesn't matter what weapons I use or what enemies to prioritize.
The roguelike elements are too boring like the talents. Most talents just give a slight percentage change to something, and some of them don't make any sense like the talent that gives you +25% less recoil if you STAND STILL. Standing still in a Serious Sam game doesn't make any sense whatsoever, goes against the design of the game. Same goes for the talent that makes you more accurate only while airborne. The only talent I actually liked was the one that makes a combo meter show up and makes you shoot faster if you kill fast enough, because it rewards playing well (instead of some arbitrary restriction, imagine that).
Which brings me to the chest rewards which are also terrible. I'm frequently skipping all rewards the game gives me, because none of them are good, just slight +/- to stats and there's no real reason to pick up another shotgun that shoots 1% faster but has -1% less magazine. I think there's something wrong with the game design if the game tells me to pick up a reward, and most of the time I don't want to pick any, because all options are terrible.
The game also isn't very well optimized. On my system (i9 13980HX, 32 GB RAM, Laptop 4090 RTX 16 GB) I have to run it at 70% resolution on High settings and I'm getting roughly 70 fps, but a lot of places drop it below 60 and overall it just doesn't feel smooth enough for how it looks. I've seen lots of much better looking games that are less demanding. I wish there was at least DLSS/FSR support. Also, for some reason trying to run the game on fullscreen always puts it on the wrong monitor for me, so borderless windowed is the only mode that works.
Also, the dialog, while fine the first time you hear it, gets annoying after a while. There's just way too much chatter between the different Sams and the conversations are sometimes too long to even play out for the room you're in, and they frequently repeat the same lines. I don't think Sams should constantly say stuff for every room they're in, it should be more rare and I'd prefer if it was more reactionary instead of playing some scripted stuff.
Overall pretty disappointed. There's a lot of potential to the idea of a roguelike Serious Sam but I don't think Shatterverse does it justice at all. I'd much rather be playing the older Sam games with roguelike elements added in instead of this, even.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

How is that? Well, you know, original games had that thing, how is it called? Oh yes, game design. A vast variety of levels, with thought-out layout, secrets and visuals, that you want to go back and explore. Logic in battle design, enemy spawns that vary from difficulty setting, enemy multipliers, a countless number of mods, etc. etc. There are tons of ways to spice up the gameplay and replay it with a different flavour. Even just going through levels once again doesn't feel tedious, as they are actually exciting to play. Now let's see what this new and shiny *roguelike* has to offer and how it extends the replayability.
What we've got so far:
Only ~ 6 playable areas (two of which are totally-not-the-same-looking BLUE SNOW GENERIC BASE and PURPLE SPACE GENERIC BASE, that already gives a good idea of how through-the-roof dev's imagination is going to be here, if from all the majority of possible environments of the multiverse we've got two generic bases just with different color schemes) The rest of the levels are the same dull visuals with 0 personality, like the devs just asked chatgpt what Serious Sam was all about? And got the answer like "some desert", "some jungle","some space base" and worked this way. Level layouts haven't gone too far in terms of creativity, most of the time it's just a narrow empty path of copy-pasted assets with nothing to explore and nothing to catch your eye. Every level follows the same formula: narrow path > arena > narrow path > boss. Also they somehow completely messed up the lighting, so every area is a plain shadow with no light sources, which makes already bland locations even more flat (the game's engine has the most advanced lighting system btw).
Weapon progression in this *roguelike* game is painfully stupid. First 3-5 hours you will be playing with a basic pistol, shotgun or thompson. Can you imagine how fun is that? You think it gets better later? No. Sure, you can unlock different weapons, but the game just won't give it to you. It against your fun. Unlocked a new gun, wanna try it? Hell no, here's your beloved pistol, take it.
Only after unlocking at least 90% of the arsenal (after spending HOURS of tedious grinding) you may finally taste that you're actually playing a roguelike.
Speaking of roguelike elements. In Act 2 the game introduces Anomalies, the gameplay modifiers. As you remember, this game hates you having fun, so every anomaly is just Annoyingly. It will make all enemies a size of ant, so it's pain in the ass to aim, it will make you see just 1 inch in front of your nose, it will even slow down time, so it will take twice as long to complete the run, but it won't make you have fun.
Another major attribute of every Serious Sam game is battle design. Here in Sloperverse it just doesn't make any sense. The game introduces the most lazy enemy spam possible, no thoughts put into it, just here you are, 99999 gnaars spawning from the exact same spot. Like, if you see this type of gameplay in a community map, it's usually called a "Russian balance" and the author gets highly bombarded in comments, but here is what paid developers came out with in the official game. But that's not only about lazy enemy spawns. Here is my favorite, the cherry on top aka the final nail in the coffin of this game. Take a deep breath and sit. Enemy spawns are not randomized. At all. In a *roguelike* shooter. Every time you start the game there will be the exact same type of enemies, in the exact same spots. Nothing will ever change. I don't know what they've been smoking, but should I tell you how fast this type of gameplay gets old? You start the game, you go through all the same dull locations, with all the same dull weapons, with all the same lazy enemy spawns in the same spots. At this point I just want to ask: Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?
As I said, every aspect of the game is mid af at best. I won't mention how bad the writing is, how hard the characters are trying to be funny and how hard they fall flat in this regard. It's all casualties of the modern tiktok audience who is the main target of this game. The main problem is - it's not a roguelike. It's just a regular same linear game like it was before, but worse. Heck, even the coop side is better in the original. For example, Fusion release has tons of multiplayer modes, versus mode, deathmatch, capture the flag, etc. 20+ MULTIPLAYER SKINS, not just some 5 random faces in the sam's outfit. A single player game has a better multiplayer than a multiplayer-specific game. That's just hilarious. The amount and quality of content in this game is comically low. And I can see why. Developers didn't have much time to actually work on the game, they were too busy rushing to catch up with the coop roguelike hype train.

This is not Serious Sam outside of visuals, as in the inspiration for the visuals, not the visuals themselves. I wish whoever made this game had played a serious sam game before. But hey, here's a list:
- Right off the bat, unskippable 1 minute legal screens... This 2007?
- The classic "OH NO we can't compîle 20 000 shaders once and be done with it, we'll compile shaders every level!" weird AAA dev mentality.
- 50% 3D res default... HUH?
- Why is the first ever section in the pitchest black scenes? AND has a jump section all the while you're trying to get used to the horrid pace.
- Smoothing on by default...
- Runs like crap on Epic (while also looking like it)
- The only time I had a tiny % of it feeling "serious sam" was at the end of a run with a bunch of upgrades that make it not-so-slow. Still didn't get hordes of enemies though (10 at a time doesn't count). Guessing that, like the horrible introduction, it only gets "serious" on the absolute last difficulty.
Refunding because this isn't Serious Sam, and I ain't playing through the game to get a semblance of it being Serious Sam.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Serious Sam Shatterverse is not a Serious Sam game. It feels less like the other spin off games the Serious Sam Ip has gotten over the years and more like a BHVR and Devolver wanted a quick pay day and Serious Sam still had enough draw to the IP's name that it seemed like a good idea. The levels don't feel like Serious Sam. Enemies have been redesigned. The art direction is so blatantly Fortnite inspired it physically hurts to see Sam Stone looking so awful. Speaking of characters, they HAD ALL THE SIDE CHARACTERS FROM THE FRANCHISE TO PICK FROM... they made up new ones. They didn't consider why every Serious Sam fan hates the NETRICSA from Serious Sam 2 and gave her a voice. She makes quips along with the rest of the Serious Sam Shatterverse cast all the time. They literally did the modern audience move of having Sam say 'What were you expecting a one liner?' as if anyone wanted millennial humor back sass from Sam Stone.
Everything is dumbed down and made into a kid friendly product. The craziest part is that a Serious Sam roguelike doesn't even sound like a bad concept, but when you give an IP like this to a company that cannot for the life of them made a good game and their only successful product is one that is so mired in controversial balance choices and frequently cited as being one of the most anti-player products in gaming... you cannot expect a good game to come out on the other side of that development.

Shooting isn't really shooting, it's more suggesting to the enemy that they take a nap, no clear goal, overstays its welcome right on the very first room of the whole game. Enemies disappear when they die like it's some kind of proof of concept where they're starting to build a game. Can't believe I'm saying all of this about a game with the Serious Sam title on it.
