She was nervous at first, hoping she’d be “good enough to play alongside her hubby,” but within minutes we were laughing, messing around, and having the best time.
The sausage and pig parts had us absolutely losing it, she was still giggling about them the next day. Some levels were frustrating, but even the chaos felt fun. I was Tinkerbell, she bullied me for it, and in one level she kept whipping me with the in‑game laser whip like it was her new favorite hobby. I was suffering. She was thriving. We were both laughing.
And the flying hoops? Yeah… she was the one struggling there. I was silently judging her like, “what is my wife doing,” while she was raging at the screen. Peak comedy. Peak bonding.

The amount of thought put into every single level is mind-blowing. The way it blends sci-fi and fantasy within the puzzle-platformer genre feels incredibly natural and coherent. Rader is easly the best villan Hazelight has written as he feels very statisfying destroying that annoying ass.\\
the side stories compared to the mini games is an execellent inclusion expecially how whacky they can get.

Those two previous games captured something that this one was not able to do. I cared about the characters in the first two games all the way through, in this game however i found myself wanting it to be over. I found the two protagonists to be a little annoying. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the game, i just don't think it is on the same level as the other two coop games before it. I feel like the puzzles and gameplay become repetitive fairly quickly and like i mentioned before the main characters aren't that likeable. It wasn't the worst game I've ever played and I can guarantee that if were both still able then me and my buddy will play the next one. I just want this to be a warning that if you are expecting Split Fiction to capture the magic of It Takes Two or A Way Out, it doesn't. But in the opinion of some random guy on the internet id say its worth a playthrough.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Probably good for non-gamers or people who just want a very simple co-op experience. But we play games pretty regularly, and for us it was honestly boring and underwhelming.

Even better than "It Takes Two", and "It Takes Two" is one of my all-time favorite story experiences in a game. The art style is fantastic, the world design is beautiful, the coop mechanic is almost always intuitive (there are a couple puzzles that perhaps could be more obvious, but maybe that's me). The story is unique, the game itself had just a *crazy* number of different playstyles by the end. The art style is fantastic, the world design is beautiful, the coop mechanic is almost always intuitive (there are a couple puzzles that perhaps could be more obvious, but maybe that's me). The story is unique, the game itself had just a *crazy* number of different playstyles by the end. But the enjoyment is sadly diminished by extremely unlikable characters who complain almost the whole game and a very simplistic and cartoonish story.
I still kinda liked it overall but the price I paid definitely leaves a sour taste... I would mostly recommend it if you get it for cheaper and/or if you share the price with the person you're playing with since you only need one copy for two people.

Story : A big company called Rader Publishing invites writers to test a machine where they will live their story in a simulation. The playable characters are two of those writers: Zoe, a fantasy writer; and Mio, a sci-fi writer. When the machine starts and puts the writers into bubbles, Mio suddenly panics and wants out but the CEO stops her and she ends up falling into Zoe's simulation.
Now Zoe and Mio share the same simulation, which creates glitches. They are forced to learn to work together to go through the different worlds that regularly switch from fantasy to sci-fi. Their goal is trying to find those glitches so that it will shut down the machine and get them out of the simulation.
As they go, they learn that the company has hidden motives and wants more from the writers than just the one story they signed off.
During the game, you also slowly find out about Zoe's and Mio's pasts and what led them to become writers and come to this company to begin with.
This game's story was so annoying. Like I've said the playable characters complain non stop, which really takes you away from the wonder you should feel from exploring the different worlds.
The story with the company is just stupid. I'm gonna guess they signed a contract before getting there and they seem to put on the machine outfits with no complaining so why does Mio suddenly freaks out and thinks there's a conspiracy out of nowhere? At that point, there's really no reason to believe so. Then when she asks to leave, why does the CEO try to forcefully stop her? He has lots of willing writers and could bring more easily so why go to the trouble of stopping Mio? He could have also just calmly talked to her away from the machine to convince her to go back to it. It's just shown in such a ridiculous way that I instantly lost all investment in the story... and that was the very beginning of the game. And it doesn't get better, it gets more and more ridiculous as the game goes on. The CEO goes full on cartoon villain by the end.
Mio and Zoe also get backstories to make them more sympathetic but they're so annoying that by the time the backstory arrived, it was too late, I already couldn't care less about them. Zoe's story is a bit more endearing even if you could see it coming from a mile away.
Gameplay :
For most chapters, you get a main world (sci-fi or fantasy) and then you can do optional side worlds of the opposite genre along the way.
Some mechanics stay the same but you get a new gimmick for each new main world and some of the side ones. For example in a world you can transform into creatures with certain abilities and in another you have dragons that can do things for you.
Zoe and Mio always have different abilities which forces them to work together to go through certain obstacles. I never felt like one got it better than the other. They always seemed pretty balanced and interesting in their own way.
From time to time, you will get boss fights where you will use the abilities of this world.
It's a shame that a lot of those worlds just felt like cool ideas for games and you only got to test a prototype.
It's also a very cinematic game and by that I mean you'll be running a lot. The platforming and puzzle aspects of the game are not that present sometimes.
As for the difficulty, it's mostly very simple. Some parts and boss fights might be a bit of a struggle but when you die, you can reappear after a few seconds as long as the other player doesn't also die at that moment so you can just brute force your way through it.
Achievements : The achievements are mostly for doing some silly things in levels. You also have an achievement for sitting on benches throughout the levels and one for doing all the optional side stories.
The only achievements you might struggle on are the two where you need to do something perfectly.
In any case, there is a chapter select so you can easily go back to the places where you missed an achievement or restart the parts where you need to do something perfectly until you get it right.

I loved It Takes Two and A Way Out so it was such a shock to me that this game was a drag to get through, I was so hyped to play it when it got announced. However the writing, uninspired levels and characters just made this soo bleh.
The writing is the worse thing about this game, so if you’re looking for just a game for 2 player coop gameplay and don’t care about story at all, then this may be for you, but considering there’s so many other great choices with good writing this one falls flat. The dialogue in this game is just horrid as the main characters constantly shout out one outliers and when they’re not doing that you have to push through an obnoxiously optimistic character and a cringy edgy character. Throughout the entire game my friend and I were just groaning to the cringy dialogue and forced “you can talk to me, I’m here for you” moments, which sucks because I was really trying to get into the story, it’s just so painfully meh.
Not to mention the story is just boring / very obvious, you know how the story will end because the villain is very 1 dimensional. I did like how they tried to put a semi serious story segment near the end, but honestly I couldn’t care less by that point.
The idea of the game is cool, I like the sci-fi mix with fantasy, and honestly they have a really cool final level that mixes the two well, but most of the games levels are really boring and generic fantasy and sci-fi settings. The side stories are really cool however, they feel really creative and it feels like there’s passion put into them, it just sucks that they’re so small and the main levels are boring / very generic.
Another positive is the gameplay is mostly fun, if not repetitive. It feels like they just kinda took the gameplay of it takes two and redid it, which is not a bad thing I guess, just gets a bit repetitive.
Overall this game is just a mess and felt like a huge disappointment to me. The gameplay isn’t anything unique and done way better in their last game, and the writing is just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad. I had to drag myself through this game to finish it and don’t feel satisfied completing it. The only good parts of this game are the side, optional and missable stories, which are short and fun, but few and far between. I do NOT recommend, spend like 5 bucks on Lego Batman 1 you’ll have a way better time.

And the fact that there are many segments where we are just split-screened and nothing is happening. One moment like a real co-op one is e.g. riding and the other is aiming, but next segment we're each on our own again just running around? I expected "okay this level I have this mechanic, you have that one, we get a practice puzzle and off to the challenge!"... Yes but not really.

Delivering an emotional and artistic story, wrapped in brilliant level design and focusing on fun. Reigniting the spark that there are in fact still jaw-dropping good gems out there. Yeah, it’s fun to play, but this is not just chaos and laughs all the time. Most of the time you’re actually there with your friend going “wait… this is really cool” and just enjoying the ride together.
The “buy one, invite a friend” thing is straight up genius. One copy, two players, zero drama. No excuses left. If your friend says no now, that’s a personality issue, not a budget one.
What really got me was the journey. Playing through the story together just hits different. Mio and Zoe are total opposites, and somehow you end up liking both. You start the game thinking “ok cool co op game” and suddenly you’re invested in their story like “alright, I need to see where this goes.”
The graphics are gorgeous. Every area has its own vibe, tons of detail, and that “let’s stop for a second and look at this” effect.
And the references… you’ll keep catching yourself going “hold on… this feels like Prince of Persia” and then boom, the game flips into something completely new again. It never sits still.
The level design is just ridiculous. The creativity here is over 9000. Every time you think the game is done surprising you, it just throws another idea in your face.
This is not just a co op game. It’s a shared experience. Half gameplay, half “did you see that?!” moments.

And the references… you’ll keep catching yourself going “hold on… this feels like Prince of Persia” and then boom, the game flips into something completely new again. It never sits still.
The level design is just ridiculous. The creativity here is over 9000. Every time you think the game is done surprising you, it just throws another idea in your face.
This is not just a co op game. It’s a shared experience. Half gameplay, half “did you see that?!” moments.
