There is an almost ridiculous amount of creativity packed into it. Every level introduced some new idea, mechanic, visual style, and so much more—just when I thought I'd figured out what kind of game I was playing, it turned into another game entirely.
At various points, I was playing pinball, controlling shapeshifting robots, snowboarding for points, crossing between completely different worlds, solving wonderfully creative puzzles, and dealing with situations so absurd that we couldn't stop laughing. Then, somehow, the game managed to turn around and deliver moments that genuinely made us cry.
The side stories deserve particular praise because they were not just filler content, but rather little explosions of creativity in their own right that I doubt I'll experience anywhere else. The Halloween-themed one was my favourite, especially the flower-planting section. Some of the funniest moments in the game came from them! The main story itself develops in a way that pushes the game to further extremes; as the machine becomes increasingly unstable, the worlds themselves do so with it, and this progression gave the developers an excuse to get even more ambitious with what happens around you. Even the boss fights refused to settle into a formula. Every single one felt like a completely unique idea rather than a variation of the last, and then there was the finale...
I genuinely don't know how to describe it without ruining what makes it so special. It was completely and utterly mind-bending. The game took everything it had been doing and pushed it to its absolute limit.
Now, I've played a lot of games, but I don't think I've ever experienced anything quite like that sequence before. It was technically impressive, visually insane, incredibly imaginative, and one of those moments where I found myself wondering how somebody even came up with the idea in the first place.
But beyond all the mechanics and creativity, my favourite part of this game will always be the joy it engendered. There were evenings where I had to force myself to launch the game and start a session; I was miserable, tired, and struggling to motivate myself. But every single time we played, I felt energised, happy, distracted... and sure, maybe the happiness didn't always last very long after we stopped playing, but for those few hours... I was laughing, thinking, getting completely absorbed in whatever bizarre world the game had thrown us into next, and forgetting about everything else for a while.
I don't think every game needs to have some profound emotional impact on the person playing it, but for me, this one happened to arrive at a time when those treasured, fleeting little pockets of happiness genuinely mattered most, and that's probably the highest compliment I can give Split Fiction. It was not simply an incredibly creative co-op game. It was a game that constantly surprised me, made me laugh until I couldn't breathe, occasionally made me cry, and at times, even gave me something to look forward to.

Same chill difficulty, top tier visuals n that cozy feel-good story vibe the studio’s famous for. What really blew me away most is the sidestory content. Every single arc’s got its own unique flavor n packed full of wild creativity, especially the hand-drawn storybook chapters. The level of polish there is straight up mind blowing.

Game completion including side stories should take around 10-15 hours to beat. One of the character seems unlikeable due to her mean attitude, though as the story progresses her character develops near end, as well as to the part where they have to obtain the other fragment and lift each other's spirit up, I find this particular moment really beautiful.. I almost teared up. Both sci-fi and fantasy world designs are very well-made and gorgeous, sometimes ya just gotta halt for a while and just enjoy the scenery. Gameplay is packed with loads of actions especially in sci-fi world, the fantasy world on the other hand is much more chill. While the game isn't incredibly difficult but it definitely requires significant teamwork at times, hence proper communication is key. There are also two minigames available as side story which lets players to compete each other for fun. The music playing in the background is nicely composed too.
Overall the game is absolutely a blast to play, best part is the second player doesn't need to pay to experience the game! Will return to this game again for 100% achievements some other time when able. Definitely worth the full asking price, or at least try get it on sale if can. I didn't pay full price for this but honestly I would pay full price to gift a friend and start another playthrough. Seriously some of the most creative and interesting puzzles/gameplay I've experienced in 20+ years of gaming. All my hours on this have been on the steam deck in a couch co-op setting and the performance has been decent with a stable 50+ fps. It does use 90+% of both cpu/gpu but I never messed with any in game settings and would play hours at a time no problem.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Quick context if you missed it. Split Fiction is from Hazelight Studios, the Swedish team behind A Way Out and It Takes Two, with Josef Fares directing again. It dropped on March 6, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and landed on Switch 2 a few months later in June. Around 80 people built it on Unreal Engine 5. It has moved past 7 million copies and sits at a 91 on Metacritic, which makes it Hazelight's highest rated game to date. Fun detail: the two leads are named after Fares' daughters.
The setup
Mio writes sci-fi. Zoe writes fantasy. They both show up at a publisher that turns out to be running a machine designed to strip creative ideas straight out of writers' heads. Something goes wrong, the two of them end up trapped inside their own stories, and the only way out is together.
That premise is doing a lot of heavy lifting, because it gives the developers permission to build whatever they want. One chapter you are riding a sandshark through a desert. Next you are a cyber ninja on a hoverboard. Then you are raising a baby dragon. Then you are in a dance battle with a monkey. It should feel like a mess. It does not. It feels like someone finally got to make the game they always sketched in the margins of a notebook.
The visuals
This is where the game genuinely floored me. Every world has its own art direction, its own colour language, its own lighting. Mio's sci-fi levels are all cold neon, hard edges and reflective surfaces. Zoe's fantasy chapters go warm, soft and painterly. The transitions between the two are some of the best looking moments I have seen in a co-op game, full stop.
What makes it more impressive is that you are seeing all of this at half the screen. Split screen usually means compromise. You lose resolution, you lose detail, you lose effects. Hazelight clearly designed around that from day one. Camera framing, scale, contrast, all of it is tuned so that a half screen never feels like a downgrade. On PC at high settings it is easily one of the best looking games of the year, and the fact that two people are running it side by side makes that harder to pull off, not easier.
The gameplay
The core loop is platforming and puzzles, but almost every level throws out its old mechanic and hands you a new one. Mio and Zoe never get the same abilities either, so you are constantly solving problems from two different angles. One of you is grappling, one of you is phasing. One of you controls gravity, one of you is throwing shields. It forces actual conversation. My co-op partner and I spent half the game shouting instructions at each other and the other half laughing at how badly we executed them.
Then there are the side stories. Optional pockets you can walk into that are basically miniature games with their own rules, art style and jokes. Most studios would have shipped one of these as a full title. Hazelight buries them as bonus content.
Sound design deserves a mention too, and it is not just me saying that. The audio team took home a Best Sound Design win at the game audio awards, and you can hear why. The weight of the hits, the environmental layering, the way each world has its own sonic identity. Play it with headphones or a decent bar.
What is not perfect
The story is the weakest part. It is fine, it is charming, and the friendship arc between Mio and Zoe genuinely lands by the end. But it hits familiar beats and the villain is thin. A few reviewers flagged pacing issues in the back half and I think that is fair. There is a stretch around the midpoint where the ideas keep coming but the momentum dips.
Also, and this is not a flaw exactly, you cannot play it alone. That is the whole point. If you do not have someone reliable to sit down with, this is not the purchase for you.
The Friend's Pass is the real value
Worth calling out. You buy one copy, your friend downloads the free Friend's Pass, and they play the entire game with you at no cost, cross platform. PC to console, console to console, it works. Two people, one purchase, roughly 12 to 14 hours of content. I cannot think of better value in gaming right now.
Verdict
It did not win Game of the Year, and it was not even nominated at The Game Awards 2025, which a lot of people including me thought was a snub. It walked away with four nominations and no GOTY slot in a year stacked with Clair Obscur, Silksong and Kingdom Come 2. Awards aside, none of that changes what the game is.
Split Fiction is the best split screen experience I have played. It respects your time, it never repeats itself, it looks incredible, and it makes you and whoever is sitting next to you actually work together. Grab a friend and play it.

Split Fiction is the best split screen experience I have played. It respects your time, it never repeats itself, it looks incredible, and it makes you and whoever is sitting next to you actually work together. Grab a friend and play it.

The gameplay is in the same vein as Hazelight Studios previous work, It Takes Two. I played this game with my partner who doesn’t really play video games and although some sections were difficult for them, we were able to finish the game together and had a lot of fun doing it. If you’re looking for a coop game with couch coop to play with a friend or partner that aren’t gamers, Split Fiction is a nice entry point.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Every title they've come out with has been banger after banger. the story is pretty good, the characters feel real enough (I have a pretty high bar for characters with depth and i was satisfied with maybe a gripe or two that felt unrealistic and forced from a narrative perspective), and the gameplay, omg the gameplay, chefs kiss. if you like puzzle platformers with some combat in it, with a story, this game is absolutely a pick up. Youre not really here for the combat, as its pretty light. no GTFO gameplay.

Compared to It Takes Two, the overall atmosphere feels much more futuristic, robotic, and sci-fi oriented. Personally, I still prefer the more emotional and charming world of It Takes Two, but Split Fiction makes up for it with gorgeous visuals and impressive technical improvements.
The graphics are a noticeable step up, and every new area introduces something unexpected. Just when you think you've figured out the gameplay, the game presents another unique mechanic that keeps things interesting.
We haven't finished the game yet, but after 3.4 hours, it's already clear that this is another quality co-op adventure from Hazelight. If the rest of the game maintains this level of creativity, it's going to be an easy recommendation.
