It's definitely a huge improvement graphics-wise and base building is much smoother and more customizable, but the rest feels like a downgrade. I don't mind that the game is incomplete/missing multiple biomes, but there are some design problems I can't look past that take me out of the game. The biggest is the wildlife.
There are tons of arguments online about the fact you can't harm the wildlife in any way, even inadvertently. I understand the design philosophy behind this and I agree Subnautica shouldn't be about combat, but in the original you had your survival knife and could kill things by ramming them. This time they are all literally invincible, even if you ram them at full speed. Not only are the immune from player-caused harm, they also can't kill each other- you'll see predators take down prey only for the prey to get back up and continue swimming soon after.
It also means there are no ways to secure your base from some really annoying predators other than some basic repellant and decoy options. Again, I get the design philosophy, but it makes no sense in the game world. The implementation is ham-fisted and stupid, there was nothing wrong with the approach in the original game. In the original I felt bad if I hit a creature with my vehicle, now it doesn't matter because it is obvious at all times that these are unkillable, unharmable video game objects.
Beyond that I also don't think there's as much variety to the species and they don't have many (or any) environmental interactions. They just swim around in their pre-defined patterns and don't do anything else. Remember sea-monkeys in the original? They'd tease and taunt you, even steal things which you could then retrieve with other goodies at their den. Or the sharkish things (I forget the name) who would collect metal scraps.
With time and maybe mods it will hopefully become a great game and worthy successor to the first, but for now I can't recommend this one.

It feels different, has the multiplayer / co-op capability, and every aspect from visuals and graphics to controls to gameplay feels like its been properly changed from the first. Is it better than the first? Hard to say and really will depend what you're looking for. Do remember, this is still in Early Access while I review this!
Subnautica 2's gameplay is a little different from the first. I feel generally it is in a good way, and in some ways it's lost a touch of the originality the first Subnautica had. Controls are a little smoother, gameplay seems to be quite fluid all around with ever-updating changes, and the interaction between objects and the player are way better. The first game felt a little stiff moving around, interacting with objects, and building. This one, again, all over feels a lot smoother. The game maintains its suspense and mystery, however I felt the first did an excellent job presenting the beauty of being alone on a water planet while leaving (in the not so far distance) a giant wrecked ship, which almost immediately created a small sense of concern. Subnautica 2 feels a lot more welcoming to a general audience, still with intense moments that can make players jump. The first one was just like "OK, tiny drop pod, a lot of water, bit of land there, and giant ship on fire there.... oh boy". This is neither a good or bad thing, I believe it's a distinction between both the games. I do feel a little "braver" in the second compared to the first, but those who are trying Subnautica 2 (instead of the first one) I find are still quite jumpy.
The graphics and visuals again, are blown right out of the water (... couldn't resist). The animations of the fish (large and small) are awesome, they feel alive and certainly have their own style looking very much native to the water planet. The environment constantly has something interesting to look at and all the assets feel like they have a proper purpose and that they are unique in their own respect. There are events (such as air bubbles or eyes that open from an enemy) that specifically provide visual feedback to the player. It does get scary when the day gets dark, again contributing to the overall experience. The sounds and music were also well done. I felt as though the first Subnautica did it a little better, but again, we are still in Early Access. The devs have done a good job trying to ensure there are some sort of sounds going on at all times, and that it's just not emptiness. Some background noises sound like echo noises, some do sound like a giant leviathan is about to kill the character. Both these domains are extremely important to gameplay experience. They are getting regular upgrades and optimization which will for sure make the game better in the long run to further immerse the player into the game.
Overall, the game is off to a rock solid start. There aren't any insane Early Access game-breaking bugs and the Devs did their best to let the player know when they are entering a non-tested area. The map feels a lot smaller than the original; this might be due to where (location-wise) the player starts this time (in addition to the game being in Early Access, of course). I sort of hope they don't go a linear route with the map and do somehow allow connections between areas. Then again, I haven't fully designed a video game... yet. The multiplayer features are awesome. Having friends makes playing Subnautica a little easier at night in addition to avoiding an endless grind to get resources to build a useable base mid-game, rather than the usual late game stage of, "well, should've spent all my resources earlier because I'm done the game and have no reason to build or come back to it". Hopefully the game continues to receive development (even though the Devs got a beauty of a payday) and continues to grow. This was one of those games, initially found on PC, to be something bigger than an idea. Hope it continues to grow. The big sub from last time was nice.

This game builds very well into the foundations of Subnautica adding, subtracting and remixing things in the process to match the developers vision of what an open world survival crafting game should really feel like.
There are things in this game that have clearly improved such as the story telling and how fleshed out it is. Instead of one and done entry logs you get a somewhat cohesive string of events that builds up to something that has yet to happen.
At first I had some gripes with the fact that in terms of vehicles we are severely limited, I mean, if you come directly from Subnautica where you have access to huge submarines that can house mechs used to dive thousands of meters down it's normal that you miss that when the only thing you have access to is the new iteration of the seamoth. I have come to realize that a game like Subnautica 2, similarly to Subnautica, is a game that is going to take quite a while to develop it's identity. That being said I completely understand if the developers decided against bringing older vehicles into the mix in order to, in the future, create a roster exclusive to this new entry.
I would say if you approach this in the nerdiest way possible there is no way you wouldn't have access to said vehicles since at the end of the day it's all Alterra's technology, but surprisingly the in game storytelling has done a great job so far tying the events of this game into the overall universe and story of what happened on 4546B which is great. I know that nowadays there's a tendency to overdevelop lore instead of presenting product but I think the subtlety of how it's done here is good enough.
In terms of gameplay the changes are at best mild, such as the base building which is convoluted to say the least but gives you much more freedom than it did in the first game, and the fact that now you're basically not allowed to hurt any of the wildlife which is a game direction many choose to criticize, I personally don't mind it.
I think the Biomes could be a little bit improved on, I think it's unfair to compare them to the last entry which had years of ongoing development but I think nothing in the mid to late game here invoked the same feeling in me that things such as the Lost River did back in Subnautica, it was all a bit too same-y. What they did manage to do was scare me a bunch more with Leviathans popping out of nowhere when I was trying to reach very far away places.
I really want the big content update to come out so I can finally get to that tree and from the looks of it and everything I've read, it's aiming to dive more into the horror aspect, and whilst I'm not really sure how to feel about that, I will be here for it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The better graphics actually harm this game. The first had a soul, quirks, and therefore some charm. This new game gives corpo slop vibes. There's something missing from it, it feels lifeless in the same way AI generated content feels lifeless.
Subnautica 2 feels like a sterile shadow of the first, and that's because the lifelike elements have been removed. The story is not great; "Oh you died? That's fine, we'll just print you in a new body!" Ok, so, what's the point? All consequence and risk have been removed (from a narrative point of view, there are of course mechanical downsides to dying) if the player can just print new bodies.
The removal of the survival knife, and the general en-safening / non-violence stance taken on everything in the game is completely ridiculous.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

My reasoning for the thumbs down however is that the game is still in Early Access and the price tag for it doesn't reflect the value of what is offered at this current time in terms of Story and re-playability. Subnautica 2 is estimated to be completed 2028-2029 according to the Developers. Subnautica 2 has the potential to be a great game based off Subnautica 1 alone but only time will tell whether that rings true or not.

Very odd for a survival game, especially the direct sequel to one that already flawlessly perfected the 'coexistence' message they're trying to force here by making fish pointless and tedious to kill, but not impossible. Even worse, the wildlife can't even hurt each other. You know, the big, scary predators that are supposedly dangerous hunters and strict carnivores? Can't even hurt a fly. It's three steps back, directly into a garden rake, three stooges style, and the dumbest part is that I technically lied, there is one way to hurt wildlife; by kidnapping small fish and slugs in large quantities and either cooking them alive, or grinding them up for water. Totally co-existing with the ecosystem there, guys. It's not like there's a plot point about the entire planet's ecosystem being so fragile that even a slight imbalance could cause an entire ecological collapse. Obviously the solution is to make every living creature in the game completely and totally impervious to being slashed by a hatchet or run into by a submarine made of titanium. Totally not immersion destroying and definitely sends a very clear and cohesive message!

However, I must CURRENTLY give it a thumbs down, so that the devs might see these critiques and actually fix them, as all three are beyond egregious. The new building stuff is incredible, also I hope they somehow make the placement checker for the ladders a bit smaller so we don't need enormous amount of empty space just for a ladder between floors. Even an elevator could be some thing cool to add in the future. I hope this one will have a giant map, tons of new things to do, and also allow a bit more nudging for building. It isn't an issue with PC itself, I meet the specs just fine, but ever since an update to the beta I have be unable to run the game. For a month it would just crash on start up, and when I finally got it to open, it practically blows up my PC. This was not happening before and neither of the two other games do this. Two of my friends, all of us with varying PCs and specs, had the same issue—and that's after some of the fixes we all found online from the community.
If/when this issue is fixed; I would absolutely recommend the game. But I just can't tell anyone to play it right now, when as it stands, the game is completely unplayable for a lot of players.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I had looked away for a for a few seconds while traveling to my destination in my pod and didnt realize I had crossed into an area still being developed. The warning screen pops up (it doesn't pause the game play), as Im reading the prompt, a beast comes out of no where and kills my pod and me instantly. I mean the prompt is still on the screen! Its a few meters past the development line. I go back to grab it. No time to fix it because this beast comes from no where and kills me instantly!! Ive tried numerous times to retrieve it. I lost my pod to an honest accident. Im tired of wasting my time!
