\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSo Brotato is a game all about nuance, you might look at the cleaver and think it's not super interesting, what makes it different than the kinfe?
Well the cleaver scales with your health, it gains base damage half off of melee and partially off of your max HP. The knife has a base 20% chance to crit and is cheap as hell, it is practical to rush down higher end knives which get better and better base crit and crit damage, until you're holding a knife that with no extra stats crits for 4x damage 50% of the time.
That's what Brotato is, every single weapon in the game has something special about it, crossbows partially scale with range, SMGs might be a bit OP, laser guns gain QUADRUPLE bonus from ranged damage increases but fire really slow, revolvers have high damage but a reload every 6 shots.
How much you enjoy Brotato depends on how much you look into and exploit these traits. For example the king class gets a bonus for high tier weapons, so what you can do is exploit the pistol being extremely common and cheap to ladder up to T4 pistols and get up to 150% attack speed and damage.
Now there is one criticism I have for the game, Nightmare mode sucks rancid dog crap from a septic tank. NOBODY is happy with this 6th difficulty tier, every other day there is a complaint about it being too difficult from normal players of the game, and it's always responded to by people who completed it blindfolded, in another room, and their little brother was playing, and they weren't even trying, and it was totally just a faceroll. There is no middle ground on the opinion for this game mode, either it's too easy for people who have put 4000 hours into this game and they aren't happy with it, or it is too hard for people who just enjoy the game normally, it was a bad decision to implement it directly into the game and not as an official mod on the steam workshop.
Apart from Nightmare mode I would almost call this game perfect, danger 0-5 is a great difficulty curve, every class plays very differently and you should think of them as different difficulty modifiers. So here is my advice for if you buy this game and get to Nightmare difficulty, try it out, see where you land on it, and if you don't like it, use the accessibility options to crank down the difficulty to minimum, get the unlock from it and never touch it again.
Nightmare difficulty does not deserve your respect, and it's existence can taint your experience with this otherwise well balanced game, so the best way to deal with it is to consider it like Doom 1/2 Nightmare, not worth playing unless you enjoy it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

“What if a potato had six weapons and an absolutely unreasonable amount of violence to commit?”
The answer is apparently one of the most addictive roguelites I've ever played.
The concept is simple. You're a potato. You have weapons. Thousands of enemies want you dead. Your job is to survive increasingly ridiculous waves of enemies while turning yourself into the most heavily armed vegetable imaginable.
And somehow, it works.
At the beginning, you feel pretty powerful. You've got a couple of weapons, you're running around killing things, and you're thinking, “Yeah, I've got this.”
Then the enemies start multiplying.
Suddenly the entire screen is red.
You can't see your potato anymore.
You're running in circles desperately trying to pick up experience while twelve different types of enemies are actively attempting to turn you into mashed potatoes.
The build variety is where Brotato really shines. You can focus on attack speed, crit, elemental damage, dodge, armor, harvesting, health, or whatever other ridiculous combination you've decided will definitely work this time.
And there are an absurd number of potatoes to choose from.
You have potatoes that encourage completely normal strategies.
Then you have potatoes that basically say, “What if we made this unnecessarily difficult?”
You pick one.
You lose.
You pick it again because clearly the problem wasn't the character.
It was you.
The shop between rounds is also dangerously addictive. You start with a simple build in mind, see one item that looks useful, and suddenly your entire strategy has changed.
“I'll just buy this one thing.”
Five minutes later you're sitting there doing mental math trying to figure out whether +3% attack speed is worth sacrificing 12 harvesting.
This is no longer a game.
This is accounting.
And somehow the most satisfying part is watching your build come together. At the start of a run, you're barely surviving. By the later waves, you're essentially a blender with legs, deleting hundreds of enemies while numbers fly across the screen.
Until the final wave.
The final wave exists solely to remind you that you are not nearly as powerful as you thought you were.
You survive for 40 seconds.
You get cornered.
You die.
You stare at the screen.
You immediately start another run.
Brotato is simple enough that anyone can pick it up, but deep enough that you'll eventually find yourself obsessing over builds, stats, item synergies, and whether taking one more point of damage is going to ruin your entire run.
It's fast, stupid, violent, and incredibly fun.

Since the former devs turned it over to the new team and they started tweaking and adding things it has become a game that is nearly impossible to complete on the highest difficulty without retries (which used to not be a thing) or changing settings (also new). Nightmare changed the game for the worse and Evil Empire should never have been given the reigns, Brotato was great for all gamers but now it's just for the sweats and I'm sad about the loss. The later waves are unbalanced: monsters get constant buffs while the player doesn't (unless spending resources), and the late-game economy is completely broken, making it impossible to actually enjoy the experience.
The Nightmare difficulty level features even more annoying mechanics than before.
You cannot build your character for armor, healing, or life steal; furthermore, even with 2,000% damage, you won't be able to kill monsters due to their absurd stat scaling and the broken economy.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is the first time I write a negative review in my entire life, what makes it more strange is that I love this game like crazy, so why the negative review?
Well I loved this game to no end and told all my friends to play it, then came the changes and along with it, nightmare difficulty. Ironically I happen to be a lover of difficulty and I grinded most characters through it, but not even I can justify this new crazy difficulty and I'd like to explain why.
See there are a plenty of characters to choose from along with countless weapons and builds, that's what made this game interesting. In the new nightmare difficulty however you are forced to understand the entire meta and play it EXACTLY by the book, taking out all the fun, charm and build variety of the game.
When you look up videos for the old difficulty 5 you hear stuff like, "One way is to..." where are after nightmare it's mostly "Meta" or "Only way to" or "The absolute easiest way" etc with breakdowns of how to ban items in what order to circumvent the crap loot luck and so on, breaking the system in unintended ways to make it work.
Sure I guess you could say max difficulty should be for the top 1% players to squeeze the meta, but when it becomes this restrictive I just don't see the fun in it anymore. This reminds me of Borderlands and how all end builds even there all used the exakt same few legendaries for end game. What is the point of having trillions of guns to choose from if you will encounter only say 100 000 if even that in a lifetime and end up using the same 4 end ones for every build, feel me? Same here, you will use this weapon for this character and there is no other option, why even give me the choice on the character screen then? This used to be a fun expressive choice and is no longer.
The best part is, these types of games are quite literally like ARPGS and other Diablo likes, just take out the story, map, lore and everything but keep only the combat, that's it. It's literally PURE combat from Diablo likes with infinite trash mobs and occasional elites, you level up stuff and number goes higher. Why am I making this comparison? Well just like in those games you are like 90% gear and build dependent to survive. In those games however you are free to explore and redo areas etc, so if you missed a particular piece of gear, just go back or respec or do what you need to do. Here however you are locked to one singular location and you are at the complete mercy of the loot randomizer, see the issue? No?
Well to explain the issue in short, the game used to have a little window for error so as to still be fun and allow for small mistakes but you still needed to focus hard, a perfect balance. Now it is absolutely perfect run dependent, meaning imagine Diablo but you are completely reliant on getting the perfect loot drop on every single level. Didn't get the item you needed for the next round? Well too bad, this is a hardcore save, start over from scratch and do it again.
I stopped playing because even when I got a character through nightmare I didn't even feel accomplished. That run had NOTHING to do with my skill what so ever, it was pure luck that I got exactly what was needed, so my input aside from clicking said items, was irrelevant. So what is the point of playing then if I have more control over the weather than I do my runs in this game? It's a lottery simulator now and it makes me sad.
I love this game and still think of it fondly and I will probably come back. Heck I'll even change this review to a positive one if these issues are fixed... but given the strangely positive reception I don't see it changing any time soon. I suppose this is because no one plays games anymore, they just watch YouTubers play them and therefore the more challenging the game the more entertaining the video, they don't have to deal with the issue, the creator does. As for them getting through it, well it's their job, they play this 24/7 and I simply do not have time to reach that level so here we are.
This is why I get sad when people tell me, "Just go indie, bro!" Well either the indie title isn't popular enough and it dies of from lack of support, or it becomes a popular game and then one of three things happen:
1. If it's a multiplayer it will gets consumed by cheaters as indie devs don't have the means to stop modern cheater waves so they either shut down or sell the game to a AAA stuio effectively making it AAA anyway ruinig the point of going indie.
2. They see the potential and sell out to a big company for money and then we know what happens, see ending of point one.
3. It becomes the game for YouTubers to hype up ala Among Us, Brotato, Tarkov, Apex, insert popular creator stuff here, and then it will get boring for them and then in turn for the viewers. To retain this popularity they adjust for the creators, aka the top 0.0001% of players making playing the game as a normal induvidual impossible. Well it wasn't made for you, it was made for BroDude66 on Twitch that has been playing this since he was 6, he already cleared all characters on diff 5 and needs new videos to make duuuude!
Again, I love this game, I genuinely do, but the fact that it turned into this content creator game with impossible mods applied for all just to have a new official mode to clear just makes me sad. This game used to keep me hyped between work shifts, now it just stresses me out and makes me sad... "I would have won if you gave me X on round Y..." yeah well it didn't happen so try again... what's the point.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I would have loved to banish items before a run, just like Vampire Survivors did. Also, an ability to change the battlefield color to see ennemies more clearly (color battlefield is randomized).
