Every knife fight has multiple cutscenes in the middle of them to take you out of the moment, and the game does everything in its power to set them up. Found a knife? Stab the foreman. Workers strike? Stab the ring leader into submission. Bandits kidnapped Don Torissi's daughter? One on one stab-athon. I love the series and even repurchased the definitive editions of all three, but don't waste the money unless it's below $15. Just play Mafia 1-3 and be happier. Christ, and don't get me started on the ending.
With all of this being said, there was only a single part of the game that made me consider a refund and it was in Man of Honor. I didn't even realize it was DLC until after beating the game and trying to find the scene online. That is how little the DLC matters or even adds to the story other than give a reason for a war and it can barely do that. So... why am I giving this game a negative review?
Because of the ending. Solely because of the ending.
More precisely:
The biggest problem is Enzo's and Isabella's fate, as well as that of almost every character and the "family" they belong to.
Enzo dies.
The Don dies.
His consigliere dies.
The Mafia family's/"La Famiglia" estate burns to the ground.
The members of "La Famiglia" are either killed or left with nothing but ruins.
Even the vineyard and gardens are destroyed, as the whole island is devastated by the volcanic eruption, and that's it.
Isabella is left pregnant and alone in the crime infested Empire bay It also seems to me heavily implied that she left with little more than a single suitcase to her name. She looks worn out in the last cutscene. Tired... sad... alone...
I don't have an issue with tragic endings per se, but simply destroying almost everything the player has worked for throughout the game feels like the cheapest possible way to create drama.
It also reinforces the old-fashioned "crime doesn't pay" formula that was famously enforced by the Hays Code, the Hollywood Motion Picture Production Code that governed American filmmaking for decades: the protagonist enters the criminal world, becomes successful, and is ultimately punished for it — ending up dead, broke, in prison, or, in the best-case scenario, in witness protection with a mundane job, forced to live as a nobody for the rest of his life.
...and honestly, I think this game series is more interesting than that — or at least it sometimes was.
An ambiguous ending would have worked much better for Mafia - The Old Country.
Enzo and Isabella could have reached America with little more than what they could carry, leaving Enzo with few useful skills except those he acquired through his criminal life... from there, who knows what happens?
Maybe he genuinely escapes the Mafia and starts a new life.
Maybe he eventually gets involved with the American Mafia.
Maybe he tries to go straight.
Maybe he succeeds.
Maybe he fails.
Maybe the old world catches up with them.
I wouldn't know, and the game would leave it to my imagination.
Isabella could even have an uneasy conversation with Enzo at the end of the game about what they are going to do for money now... an equally uneasy or even disgusted look by Enzo at some Italian dockworkers and a single individual wearing a pinstriped suit...
I think, that could have been beautiful as a contrast between the Old Country they had just escaped and the New World.
...and that uncertainty would have been much more interesting than simply watching Enzo get killed.
It would also fit the series. The Mafia games have always dealt with the consequences of criminal life, but the protagonists don't necessarily need to die for the story to make its point. Vito can survive in Mafia III. Lincoln can potentially even "win" in Mafia III.
With Enzo, however, the game ultimately tells me that everything I did was doomed from the beginning. I spent the entire game building this character and the "La Famiglia" up, watching him and "La Famiglia" rise throughout the game — only for the writers to essentially say:
"Nope. He dies, because he trusted his best friend and this branch of the Mafia bascially dies with him."
That also makes me question the appeal of any future DLC centered around Enzo. If I already know that he, Isabella's life in Sicily, and "La Famiglia" I'm helping all ultimately amount to nothing, why should I become invested in stories showing a little further rise before the fall?
And that's a shame, because an open ending could have left me wondering...
Instead, I know exactly what happens to him.
He just dies...
...because he first spared and then trusted his best friend — who kills him for no stated reason beyond being "sorry."

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOut of the entire Mafia series, this is by far the one that is the most high brow and grounded in the entire series, long leaving behind the tropes of American mobster films that inspired the originals, but all for the absolute benefit of a more realistic story with considerable artistic value. Sincerely and tremendously well researched, even a native Italian playing the game in its high effort and genuine Sicilian dub, would find themselves easily mistaking it for an Italian game from the ground up.
Of course, its safe to say the most appropriate way to play the game is in Sicilian, but it should be noted that there is a clear difference in the localization text and subtitles between the languages. The english subtitles are close enough, but fundamentally, many instances and nuance are lost. Above all, Silician spoken is far more vulgar and characters come off as more sinister, mean spirited and generally more in line with the mid-to-low-brow attitudes of the Southern Italian mafioso sort.
Some small errors persist, such as the utilization of far more modern terms like "guarda" and the fact that the guarda themselves still primarily speak in Sicilian dialects, when in reality they would be more diverse as much of these forces would have been transferred in from other parts of Italy, as per the tradition of those forces. Strangely enough, the game does have a small scene that illustrates a large number of the recruits are from Sardinia and must hold themselves to the higher standards, but ultimately, everyone encountered will be extremely Sicilian in dialect, accent and personality.
Mafia: Old Country does not sanitize its setting and while it certainly tells a more modern story than arguably, many of its own entries in the series, it is ultimately a story that takes place in a very conservative time in a very conservative country. In other words, the politics and attitudes of the time are hardly progressive and many people are victimized by the traditions of their culture, families, oaths and religion. This makes for a stunningly realistic narrative that subverts a lot of the media that otherwise glorifies the Mafia.
The game's location does not shy away from its intense poverty and the disgusting, violent attitudes that the criminals embody in more than just attitude, but as a way of life. The setting itself is absolutely gorgeous, capturing the distinct fact that while Southern Italy has more in common geographically with North Africa than the rest of Southern Europe, it is still utterly one of the great wonders of the world in terms of pure natural aesthetic. The developers did a fantastic job of capturing the sizzling heat, extremely bright days and in other instances, the thick fog and damp evenings and early mornings.
The graphic fidelity of the game is definitely higher than the average unreal game, with relatively good optimization with some small hitching in driving sequences, but other than that, the game boasts masterful environments, expressive and human-like characters and an abundance of immersive animations. All of this plays well into the fact that the game deliberately holds itself at a grounded, slower pace and while it does allow itself to be cinematic, it tries to not break your suspension of belief, maintaining a considerable realism without becoming boring.
Not all players will appreciate the deliberate pacing of the game, but they will find that the combat itself is very reactive, responsive and the controls are hardly ever your enemy in this game. For what it is, it is a huge improvement over the combat in the Mafia 1 remake and the utilization of period-accurate weapons only make the battles more exciting, stressful and unique, with all of its shotgun-reliance, bolt action rifles, pre-stripper clip era rifles and multitudes of revolvers. When semi automatics and long-shotguns do get introduced near the end, they are a welcome way of making the gunplay feel like an evolution of itself and it certainly allows for variety of choice.
The knife fighting and knife mechanics add a lot to the game in adding much needed variety, but still, many of the best parts of the game are spent in long drives with charming characters, who are written with an incredibly high level of competency for a game. There are plenty of horses too. And for the absolutely masochistic, another painfully difficult, poorly made race sequence returns as a trademark of the franchise. But I have to admit, as painful as the race was, the context of it and the humour present in it, makes up for the frustration mechanics and clearly scripted, linear functions of it.
Old Country is definitely a game for those who always wanted something that felt more real and serious than the past entries in the series, one that is not full of movie-borrowed tropes or obnoxiously in love with trying to be better and richer than its arch rivals such as GTA. This prequel manages to fully embrace being its own thing and feels well at home with the tone and presence of the first game's remake. All in all, it is massively rewarding for fans of the original and remake, but also is happy to welcome back those who played the other games. Logging in with my linked account and being greeted with Vito's handgun from Mafia 2 is one of those little things that genuinely shows how much the developers acknowledges its small but die hard fan base.
The Czechs have, once again, proven that not only can they make better guns and beers than the Germans, but they can sure as hell make better games than them too. I honestly will not be surprised to see this studio further rise to compete with the giant that CDPR is becoming and I am sincerely sure that the next game they make will be once again, steps in the right direction. Most studios in their position are in stasis, constantly stepping forward and backwards and running around in a vicious circle of chasing themselves. But for once, we see a game that choses to master what it already does right instead of chasing the gimmicky innovations of other titles.
The game, does however, have some strenuous stealth sections which can be a bit frustrating due to how long it takes to reload a checkpoint. Some scenes feel a bit antiquated from a different era of gaming, but everything that masters the most is really polished and refined.
Definitely not made for the inattentive gamer who appreciates more chaos and free roam games, Mafia is a story and character driven game that just happens to have a beautiful map connected with it. But for those who want what it is offering, it delivers on all of its promises and will surely surprise as well.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It focuses on Enzo—who, while struggling to survive and crawling in the dirt, reaches out for the hand offered to him one day, only to find himself inside the mafia life. He slowly gets more and more involved, but it reaches a point where he realizes he has entered a point of no return. The game is centered around our character Enzo's fight for survival and his search for happiness.
The game consists of only 14 chapters. It was just like a movie, captivating from start to finish. I can easily say it's my favorite Mafia game since Mafia 2.

The main game is a wholly linear experience, but what an experience it is.
If now someone asks me for the best story in a game, this will again take a spot in my top rankings, if not the top spot. It is well written, the characters act very understandably and it carries it through (with a not-so-interesting part inbetween).
Even if a bit repetitive in terms of gameplay, you always want to get to the next story point and see how it continues.
Last but not least, the Soundtrack is incredible. While I think that the soundtrack itself can already elevate any story, it's expertly used here with a perfect use of recurring themes. They additionally mix it incredibly well with the world building, the set pieces and the beautiful graphics.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tInitially, after beating the main story I wanted to give this game a barely-positive review, but after playing more and doing challenges in the Free Ride mode, I've decided to give this game a definitive negative review?
Why?
Two main reasons.
The first one - driving. This game probably has the worst driving physics out of all open world games that I've played (and I've played most of them). It isn't that noticeable during slow rides, but when they force you to race in fast cars, oh boy, it is simply terrible. I never know how the car will react during turning or hitting anything. The car can get shot 10m into space while hitting some of the plants. I can't even count how many times my car landed on it's back. It looks like no play testing was involved or any tuning of the game for actual racing. And by 'racing' I mostly mean this ridiculous time trials, because the actual racing with the opponents is rather easy due to the fact how dumb they are.
The second reason is the enemy AI which is atrocious. It doesn't seem to be tuned either for stealth or shooting. It especially breaks when you initiate shooting during stealth segments, but it is inconsistent most of the time. Sometimes the enemy swarm you like some zombies. Sometimes all of them stay hidden behind the covers on the far end of the arena. Sometimes the enemy will suddenly turn around while heading to your distraction. It is super bad.
The game looks like all of the systems (driving, stealth, shooting) have basic necessities, but none of the polish.
Also, a side note: their ridiculous idea to expand Free Ride with these challenges where 4 out of 6 types of challenges are different kind of races is incredible. Yep, Mafia series is sure known for its stellar racing.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It especially breaks when you initiate shooting during stealth segments, but it is inconsistent most of the time. Sometimes the enemy swarm you like some zombies. Sometimes all of them stay hidden behind the covers on the far end of the arena. Sometimes the enemy will suddenly turn around while heading to your distraction. It is super bad.
The game looks like all of the systems (driving, stealth, shooting) have basic necessities, but none of the polish.
Also, a side note: their ridiculous idea to expand Free Ride with these challenges where 4 out of 6 types of challenges are different kind of races is incredible. Yep, Mafia series is sure known for its stellar racing.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

By the time I finished the story, I was literally just staring at my monitor in disbelief, thinking about what I had just experienced. The story absolutely blew me away. From the very beginning to the final moments, it kept me completely invested, and when the credits rolled, I honestly just sat there thinking, “What the hell did I just play?” Every single chapter was exciting and engaging. I never had that feeling of “I just want to get this part over with.” I genuinely enjoyed every second of the game, and that is something I really appreciate because so many games have moments where the pacing drags, but The Old Country never felt like that to me. And then there’s Enzo Favara. What an incredible protagonist. Watching his journey from a 17-year-old kid to the person he becomes by the end of the game is genuinely one of the most memorable character arcs I’ve experienced in gaming. The fact that the story takes place over only a few years, with Enzo being 17 at the beginning and around 20 by the end, makes his transformation even more impressive. He feels like a real person who is constantly being shaped by everything happening around him, and I became genuinely invested in his story. The side characters are fantastic as well, and I absolutely loved the relationship between Enzo and Isabella. Their romance is honestly one of my favorite romances I’ve ever seen in gaming. It feels emotional, believable, and genuinely important to the story rather than being there just for the sake of having a romance. Luca is another character who deserves a huge amount of praise. He is an incredible character and an excellent mentor to Enzo, and I loved watching the way he guided him and helped shape him throughout the story. Luca genuinely feels like someone Enzo can learn from, and he quickly became one of my favorite characters in the game. Cesare is also a really interesting character. He clearly wants to become stronger and prove himself, but he isn’t exactly the smartest guy around, which makes his personality and his interactions with the other characters really entertaining. Then you have Don Torrisi, the head of the family and a true Sicilian Don. He has that presence and authority you expect from someone at the top, and I really enjoyed the way the game portrays him and the power he holds within the family. The antagonists are also fantastic, and I thought the game did an excellent job making the conflicts feel personal and meaningful rather than simply throwing generic villains at you. The plot itself is incredibly well written, with great twists, tension, character moments, and a constant feeling that something could go horribly wrong at any moment. I also absolutely love that this game is a prequel to the original Mafia. It does such a great job of expanding the universe and giving more context and backstory to characters, families, and events that become important later in the series. It feels like a prequel that was actually made with a purpose, and I loved seeing the connections to the later games. Gameplay-wise, The Old Country feels incredibly refreshing. The realistic gunplay, high-quality visuals, incredible atmosphere, and engaging story all work together perfectly. The Sicilian setting is beautiful, and honestly, the game left an even bigger impression on me after watching The Godfather movies. Seeing Sicily portrayed in this way while having those movies fresh in my mind made the atmosphere feel even more special. Even though the map is much smaller than what you might expect from a modern open-world game, I honestly don’t think that hurts the experience at all. If anything, I think the more focused approach makes the story even better because the game knows exactly what it wants to tell and never gets lost in unnecessary open-world filler. And I HAVE to talk about the Man of Honor DLC. I absolutely loved it. Getting to experience more of Enzo’s story alongside a young Ennio Salieri was such a great addition. Salieri is an absolute sociopath in this DLC, and seeing this younger, more aggressive and completely unhinged version of him was honestly incredible. It gives you a fascinating look at the kind of man he was before becoming the Salieri we know from Mafia, and I loved every second of it. The DLC feels like a genuinely worthwhile addition rather than something that was thrown in just to sell extra content. Honestly, I only have two real complaints: I wish we could place a custom marker anywhere we wanted on the map, and I really wish there was a proper minimap. Those two things would have made navigation much more convenient. Other than that, I genuinely have almost nothing bad to say. Mafia: The Old Country completely surprised me. I went in expecting a solid Mafia experience and came out feeling like I had experienced one of the best stories this franchise has ever delivered. Incredible characters, an amazing protagonist, fantastic antagonists, beautiful visuals, satisfying gunplay, an unforgettable atmosphere, one of my favorite romances in gaming, and a story that genuinely stayed in my head after I finished it. Every chapter kept me engaged, every character had something to offer, and I never felt like I was just waiting for the game to end. I genuinely enjoyed every single second. 10/10. And about dlc "Man of Honor... devs of Mafia II give more afford to their DLC than this expected atleast more story about Salieri or more chapters.
