The original version of Nightingale wasn't very fun or intuitive to play but the devs have basically made a completely different game from where it was to where it is now. Unfortunately, there's a lot of friction against your progress in this game. Everything is extremely grindy and it gets old fast. Pair that with the fact the devs made exactly one post this year, this game seems to have been abandoned. I wouldn't call it abandoning the game. I'd call it "getting hired to make a different game to pay the bills because this one isn't paying the bills."
I wouldn't be surprised if they returned to active development with new content at some point in the future, or remake the game from the ground up in a new engine as a sequel. and I hope they do, because I had a lot of fun playing Nightingale from start to finish at least 3 or 4 times, exactly as it is right now. I don't regret buying it at all.
Also the whole "every material has different modifiers/stat bonuses and as you level up, your gear requires more and more materials and you get a ton of control over the exact build you want to design for your guy" feels incredibly unique and awesome and I love it.

The most important thing to know about Nightingale is that it isn't complete. It has no proper endgame, but the team behind it did manage to complete the story sections of the game and it comes to a conclusion, of a sort. After that, however, there was clearly the intention to build an endgame system, probably procedurally generated, but that failed. The only part of this that exists in the game is a boss rush mode.
If you want to play through a story with some interesting mechanics that's ultimately a little bland, that's all you need to know. And if that's enough to stop you from playing ever, you don't need to read the rest of this review.
Nightingale is an open world survival craft game with a strong combat and gearing focus, an overcomplicated materials crafting system, and a building system that never actually incorporates into the rest of the game. The gameplay loop of Nightingale is to venture into the field, attacking every mob you see and smacking every natural resource for the things that drop out of them. You take those things back to a base you built, fill a hundred chests with mostly useless crap, craft new things, and venture into the field once more.
In the field you'll kill a selection of enemies that quickly grows stale once you realize that, despite the plot of the game being about traveling through portals to infinite worlds, there are actually only three worlds: forest, desert, and swamp. You can build multiple bases on multiple worlds if you want, but there's no real need to do that, despite the game pretending that there is. You travel to worlds using crafted cards, and some cards specifically mention that you'll gain bonuses to specific items crafted on specific worlds, leading anyone to think that they should set up worlds for specific crafts to get the most out of their equipment. Unfortunately, this isn't the case; the bonus only applies to the world you make the item on, and doesn't carry over once you change to a different world. Such a terrible design choice.
It's almost a good thing that this is the case, however, because crafting items in where all of your character strength comes from and it's a royal pain in the ass. You craft items by making their component parts on specialized benches and then combining the component parts into a finished item. The first problem with this is that there are too many benches and recipes are split between them seemingly randomly, meaning you're constantly looking from bench to bench to bench to find what you need.
The second problem is that individual benches gain bonuses from augmentations you can build, and there are enormous gaps in augmentation strength and which benches can use which augment. Bladed weapons will use the same T1 augment all game; two handed maces will have a T1, T2, and T3 augment; all benches have a generic T1 augment; some benches never get any other augment at all. You have to swap augments depending on what you're making to optimize bonuses and there's no way you'll remember which augments any given craft needs, making the whole thing an enormous waste of time over and over.
The third problem is that there are four tiers of raw reagents that you use to make items, and literally hundreds of items within each tier. And, as you climb higher into item tiers, there become literally tens of thousands of possible combinations of primary, secondary, and tertiary items you can use to craft finished gear. This means that you need a tremendous amount of storage, which means that every item you've ever seen will fill drop-down menus when you're selecting what to craft with.
The fourth problem is that the menuing itself is terrible. Every bench has a very long list of items to craft (and that list starts to lag as your storage gets more and more full) and can't craft "down the tree;" meaning, if you need an ingot to craft a metal plate to craft a blade to craft a gilded blade, you can't select 'gilded blade' and then fill in the materials the finished recipe would use; you need to make everything from T1 reagant all the way up to T4 gear one step at a time, by hand.
There are other quirks to the crafting system, but this is enough of an overview to give you an idea of the kind of needless complexity you'll be butting-up against if you play Nightingale.
Other than this mess of crafting, you'll spend your time in Nightingale going to one of the three tilesets mentioned above, "exploring" it (they're all circles), killing whatever enemies a quest wants you to, and warping back to your only base. It's very repetitive, but the one thing they did right is traversal: you, like Mary Poppins before you, use an umbrella to travel around the world, and it's hilarious fun. So, so much more time should have been spent using the umbrella, incorporating it into gameplay, using it in boss fights, but alas, no. You use it to get to the group after climbing to high places, and that's about it for most of the game. The unfinished endgame does empower your umbrella more, but it's too late by then, unfortunately.
You fight bosses throughout the game, and credit where it's due: those bosses do have mechanics, which is a nice change from a lot of open world survival craft games. You never have to do much more than dodge and hit weakspots, but a few bosses do require you to use gathering tools to defeat them, which is a good melding of mechanics from the harvesting and combat sides of the game. Unfortunately, no boss or monster requires you to use your ability to build structures against them, leaving that portion of the game completely divorced from combat.
Building is entirely meaningless. Your structures are never in any danger, can be built anywhere, and in complete defiance of physics. The system works well enough, but every construction system does these days. You'll build one big box, fill it with chests, and end the game.
The story is fae gibberish and plugging a bunch of portals back in to the electrical socket. Story worlds have a big variance in polish and completeness, with the 'final' world before the incomplete endgame being very obviously designed meticulously and the other worlds looking like rough drafts in comparison. And that's it; there's nothing more to the game.
All told, Nightingale isn't finished, and what we got isn't amazing. It's probably miraculous that we got what we got, given the game started life (for some idiotic reason) as an MMO, but the combat gets samey, the building isn't interesting, and the gearing is too convoluted and overinvolved. Unless you're really desperate, give it a miss.
P.S.: Shout-out to whoever designed the bossfight with the boss that one-shots you, summons adds, has almost no damage phase, and goes invulnerable constantly. A real masterclass in boss design.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The first problem with this is that there are too many benches and recipes are split between them seemingly randomly, meaning you're constantly looking from bench to bench to bench to find what you need.
The second problem is that individual benches gain bonuses from augmentations you can build, and there are enormous gaps in augmentation strength and which benches can use which augment. Bladed weapons will use the same T1 augment all game; two handed maces will have a T1, T2, and T3 augment; all benches have a generic T1 augment; some benches never get any other augment at all. You have to swap augments depending on what you're making to optimize bonuses and there's no way you'll remember which augments any given craft needs, making the whole thing an enormous waste of time over and over.
The third problem is that there are four tiers of raw reagents that you use to make items, and literally hundreds of items within each tier. And, as you climb higher into item tiers, there become literally tens of thousands of possible combinations of primary, secondary, and tertiary items you can use to craft finished gear. This means that you need a tremendous amount of storage, which means that every item you've ever seen will fill drop-down menus when you're selecting what to craft with.
The fourth problem is that the menuing itself is terrible. Every bench has a very long list of items to craft (and that list starts to lag as your storage gets more and more full) and can't craft "down the tree;" meaning, if you need an ingot to craft a metal plate to craft a blade to craft a gilded blade, you can't select 'gilded blade' and then fill in the materials the finished recipe would use; you need to make everything from T1 reagant all the way up to T4 gear one step at a time, by hand.
There are other quirks to the crafting system, but this is enough of an overview to give you an idea of the kind of needless complexity you'll be butting-up against if you play Nightingale.
Other than this mess of crafting, you'll spend your time in Nightingale going to one of the three tilesets mentioned above, "exploring" it (they're all circles), killing whatever enemies a quest wants you to, and warping back to your only base. It's very repetitive, but the one thing they did right is traversal: you, like Mary Poppins before you, use an umbrella to travel around the world, and it's hilarious fun. So, so much more time should have been spent using the umbrella, incorporating it into gameplay, using it in boss fights, but alas, no. You use it to get to the group after climbing to high places, and that's about it for most of the game. The unfinished endgame does empower your umbrella more, but it's too late by then, unfortunately.
You fight bosses throughout the game, and credit where it's due: those bosses do have mechanics, which is a nice change from a lot of open world survival craft games. You never have to do much more than dodge and hit weakspots, but a few bosses do require you to use gathering tools to defeat them, which is a good melding of mechanics from the harvesting and combat sides of the game. Unfortunately, no boss or monster requires you to use your ability to build structures against them, leaving that portion of the game completely divorced from combat.
Building is entirely meaningless. Your structures are never in any danger, can be built anywhere, and in complete defiance of physics. The system works well enough, but every construction system does these days. You'll build one big box, fill it with chests, and end the game.
The story is fae gibberish and plugging a bunch of portals back in to the electrical socket. Story worlds have a big variance in polish and completeness, with the 'final' world before the incomplete endgame being very obviously designed meticulously and the other worlds looking like rough drafts in comparison. And that's it; there's nothing more to the game.
All told, Nightingale isn't finished, and what we got isn't amazing. It's probably miraculous that we got what we got, given the game started life (for some idiotic reason) as an MMO, but the combat gets samey, the building isn't interesting, and the gearing is too convoluted and overinvolved. Unless you're really desperate, give it a miss.
P.S.: Shout-out to whoever designed the bossfight with the boss that one-shots you, summons adds, has almost no damage phase, and goes invulnerable constantly. A real masterclass in boss design.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

That has all changed. The updates to the crafting have made it very easy to digest even though it's got quite a bit of depth. Getting the materials and understanding how they affect the finished item is fun and rewarding like finishing a good puzzle.
