\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm a huge fan of the Star Fox series, especially the SNES and N64 games. To this day, they are among my absolute favourite games, so I went into this with pretty high expectations.

The graphics and overall art direction are absolutely stunning. Everything looks fantastic, and the sound design is great as well. Even the voice acting is on point.

The controls feel very good, BUT there is one thing that really bothers me: having normal shooting and the charged laser mapped to two separate buttons feels unnecessary.

Furthermore, while Steam makes it easy to remap the controls, I still would have preferred to see proper button layout customization built directly into the game.

The ship controls are tight and responsive, although I don't think they feel quite as tight as they did in Star Fox 64.

The levels are challenging and varied, with alternative routes to discover. Finding those routes is so much fun and gives you a good reason to replay levels. And there are HIGH SCORE medals, too.

For €15/$15, this is an absolute must-have for Star Fox fans and an easy recommendation.

Honestly, bashing this game just for the sake of it really does it a disservice.

If you're a fan of classic Star Fox series, you should absolutely give it a chance.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really wanted to like this game. It's got a lot going for it. To understand why I'm leaving a negative review I'd like to go over what it's doing right, and what it isn't. I'll change my review in the future if and when these problems get fixed.

The Good:
It feels like a Star Fox game.

It's got great graphics.

It's a solid engine and framework for these games on modern platforms.

The Bad:
It feels like a 1:1 copy of Star Fox 64 with different branding. Even some of the lines they say in the game are copy and pasted. While it's great it's so close and so in line with what Star Fox is, I would've loved to see some variety in the missions. Star Fox fans have been begging for something, anything new while nintendo has continued to re-release the same game with the same missions over and over... and this feels no different.

The controls... to quote a famous bird "This is horrible." There is *No Somersault* and *No U-Turns* so if an enemy is chasing you... good luck, instead it's replaced by the brake which slows you to a stop so you can turn around fast... and that in itself is a problem. When you're trying to turn a tight corner to fly through somewhere, you can't slow down at all. Using the brake completely stops you and doesn't allow your ship to turn in the way you need it to.

You also have charge shots and normal laser fire on a different button. Fair enough, might be good for some people... but you can't change it. Despite the fact that you can disable continuous fire, holding down normal shots do not charge a laser... I don't understand why anyone would want that option otherwise.

L/R Brake and Boost while ZL/ZR rotate the ship to turn, it feels slow to me and I'm not personally a fan of them. I would've loved to be able to rebind those controls, maybe Y slows, A boosts, B fires, X answers calls. L/R rotate while smart bombs are put on the back triggers or left stick in.

Throughout the missions you collect letters W-I-L-D... what these do is never explained to you... and collecting them all doesn't appear to change anything... so I still have no idea.

Gaining health in some missions is just non-existent, as well as laser upgrades (especially after checkpoints)

If you run out of lives, you restart the whole game. It's 2026 and yes, there's still no continues or level select. Maybe if you beat the game once you unlock one, but with the controls and no health spawning, I gave up trying to find out.

There's no alternate camera angles, no cockpit view, no zooming out to check for enemies, nothing. So if an enemy is chasing you, you'd never know until you're dead. You have brake and turn around to look behind you... and if someone is chasing you... well then I guess you're dead because you stopped.

While chasing enemies, sometimes they just go through the wall.

Hyper lasers are definitely not balanced. Beating the first or second boss feels like it takes 5-10 minutes without a hyper laser, and with it you can beat them in under a minute.

**TL;DR For the devs. How I would fix the game: Re-do the brake mechanics and let people bind their own control scheme. Improve turning to be tighter, or let people use different fighter classes to tune the game to their playstyle. If you're set on the controls, you like how the fighters feel you can add an easy mode. Make normal shots do more damage. Add somersaults and u-turns. Re-do the 1:1 missions, give players something new they haven't tried before and add the old variants as bonus missions. Add additional camera types. Make running out of lives restart the level, not the entire game or add difficulties to let players tune it to their liking.**

I think you have a solid foundation for a game, it just needs some refining and polishing. If you need playtesters, I'll do it for free and give my feedback. I think you have great potential and when you fix the issues present I think you'd have something amazing. I'll change my review once that happens, and if you release a physical copy on switch I'll buy it there too.\t\t\t\t\t

Let me address the elephant in the Arwing - the Star Fox 64 remake for 2026 was announced and came out before this game could finish development, certification, and release on Steam. In this way, I genuinely feel bad for the development team at Chuhai Labs. That's a really hard pill to swallow and still release your game. That said? I feel like it would have been a wake-up call to delay the game and release something less contingent on being another version of a game we have, ostensibly, all played before.

But the chief thing there is, that's a problem you could avoid by just not making another version of Star Fox 64. If you'll allow me, I'll go through my list of pros first, because to be honest I have way, way more cons.

Pros: I think Bowie's cute and the voice direction is actually decent. They chose the right design and VA to lead the game, and nobody feels poorly acted - even if it's a character I dislike (Thorne), the Voice Direction is strong.

Now onto the Cons. Yes, really.

Control: This is abysmal, I'm sorry. When I brake, I descend. Yeah, I get it - I don't have a G-Diffuser and can't damn-near hover in midair. Fair. But maybe that's a really awful gamefeel moment when I have to make tight turns (and the slower you are, the less responsive you are.) - also, no Loops or U-Turns? Pardon me but the amount of fun and design space you have with that is too much to ignore, so why omit it? I think that Barrel Rolling actually moves you is sort of cool, but is there any justification as to why I have to stop shooting when I roll? Can't think of a good one. It's not like in SF64 where I can roll in place and shoot, and basically be invincible.

So why turn my guns off? Speaking of which... I'm glad you can get a burst from holding down the fire button, but that it doesn't lead into a charge is insane to me. Shifting to another button to charge is a really, really awful choice. Further, I didn't find that I could CUS - Charge Unlocked Shot - so... I'm just not sure what the idea was here. If we're really going to play it so close to the cuff on how much like SF64 it is, why did we file off - of all serial numbers - the digits that made it identifiable, so to speak?

Story: What story? Somehow there's less than Star Fox 64. Grimclaw's bad, mining some rocks that do something at the end of the game, and our commanding officer has no relation to hardly anything. It feels like the Prowlers have some sort of relationship to the Blue Bombers - their Cloudcutters are roughly the same, but... There's just no threads to grab onto here, man. I guess I'm just glad they didn't give Bowie a dead dad, and I like the true ending's spin on the escape well enough.

Characters: ...So, there's a tagline here. "A team worth saving". That's a big boast for a team that almost never helps me in fights, has next to no character interaction with one another, and doesn't even call out for help half the time they're being tailed in All Range Mode sections. Seriously, every time a Prowler was on them, I had to just sort of look to my minimap instead of rely on audio cues. How much would it have cost the team to have Thorne say, "Bowie, I-I'm in trouble, help!" - genuinely, how much would one line per pilot have cost? I also don't really like any of the bosses and nobody's personalities inspire me.

Art Direction: Not going to lie, it's not very inspired. I feel like I've seen this soft and cute art style in most Indie games, and I'm not going to rag on character design, because aside from all the bosses rocking Kamina shades, most of the character designs are at least designed with intentionality behind it, but the environments are... Really boring.

Soundtrack: What soundtrack? I don't need it to sound like Star Fox, but the soundtrack evoked no sensation of excitement or inspiration in me. You want a gut puncher of a soundtrack, go try out "SPRAWL Zero" - that's a killer soundtrack and bass heavy EDM isn't even my thing.

Boss design: It's bad. Much like most of the enemies, bosses are uninteractive bullet sponges. I did not enjoy a single boss. They're not outstandingly animated, everything's some shade of grey, and it's just not inspiring stuff. It feels like every enemy was pulled from Megaman.

So let me say something else.

To come out and claim pedigree as one of the original developers, but to make something this muted in all of its respects, echoes Mighty No. 9 in ways I don't love. No, there wasn't an overpromising kickstarter or any conmen or anything, but my goodness you cannot just make such a bold claim to one of the most iconic game titles of all time and just, release this.

The worst part is, there's a lot of potential, and basically all of it is squandered by a lack of careful consideration. Star Fox is half its gameplay and soundtrack, and half its iconic characters. This has about a third of the fun gameplay, none of the memorable soundtrack, and characters I had to work to remember I was sharing the level with.

I'm going to go try and develop my own Star Fox game now, because this has been - if nothing else - a learning experience.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tSo as someone who just finished the Easy path of this game, and who considers Star Fox 64 to be one of the greatest games of all time, it's time to leave a review.

Let's start by clarifying what this game is. It clearly has less content than SF64, and some of the levels are closer to the SNES game than the N64 game in terms of complexity. Like most Star Fox games, the 'content' in this game comes from replay value re: finding all the different paths, getting all the ribbons (ie. medals), chasing high scores and so on (which I look forward to doing over the weekend). It definitely is not a 'one and done' game, nor was it ever meant to be.

But there are some aspects where the game arguably improves on Star Fox. The devs have tried some interesting new ideas, like having regular shots and charge shots on different buttons and having the ship lose altitude when you brake hard. These are good ideas and they give the game it's own feel while still feeling like a Star Fox game in every other aspect.

Speaking of game feel, I found it much easier to do 'fine aiming' in this game than in any other SF game. Maybe it's because of the Steam Controller or because of how the game was coded, but picking out targets with stick aiming is light years ahead of what it was in SF64 on the N64, Wii, Wii U or 3DS. The game also includes an option to adjust 'movement sensitivity', which is an EXCELLENT idea that allows you to tailor it to whatever controller you're using. This means that you don't need to rely on using charge shots just to hit most targets, and shows how old gameplay formulas can be greatly improved with new tech.

Aside from nailing the game feel, the other thing that this game nails is the look and the atmosphere. If you still think that Star Fox should be more like an over-the-top Saturday morning cartoon, instead of a generic-looking AAA game with 'super serial' dialogue, then this is the game you want. Playing it made me feel like a kid in 1997 again, and I was grinning like an idiot during most of the boss battles and story moments (including when this game's version of Star Wolf shows up- oh yes, they went and did that).

So is this game the "Star Fox killer" that some people (probably) expect it to be? That's debatable, since SF64 is still one of my favourite games of all time and I don't think it will ever be beaten by anything. However, I do believe that Wild Blue Skies is not only an excellent game in it's own right, but is arguably better than any other SF game that has been released since 1997 (not counting re-releases and remakes). And if you specifically want this style of game on a non-Nintendo platform, then WBS is the best you're gonna get at this point.

So in light of all that, I will give this game my seal of approval and wheel out one of my favourite clichés of recent years by saying that, once again, indies have gone and done what Nintendon't. :P\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game really won me over with its nostalgia—evoking *Star Fox 64* (or *Lylat Wars*)—as well as its visual style, the humor displayed right from the startup screens and the price is also fair.

However, for me personally, there was an overwhelming number of "issues" that prompted me to request a refund right after the training course.

In my opinion the game aims to be a modern Star Fox clone, and as such, it must stand up to comparison with Star Fox.


- The standard shot and the charged homing shot are mapped to two different buttons; the game's fast-paced, shifting situations make it difficult to constantly switch between them. It simply doesn't feel right—or even feels outright wrong—especially if you're used to the mechanics of *Star Fox*.

- Oddly enough, the standard shot is always a three-round burst, and there doesn't seem to be an option to change this. This means you aim, fire, and then have to wait through the three-shot sequence before your button press allows the next shot. If you miss your target, it feels like an eternity before you can take another shot with better aim. Furthermore, if you're used to *Star Fox*—where you could spam the fire button and shots would hit exactly where you aimed almost instantly—the delay and the pause before you can fire again here feel completely wrong.
It feels like an artificial blocker preventing you from firing more shots the harder you press the fire button, because you always have to wait for the burst to finish and can't just spam the button furiously when it really counts.
As a consolation prize, there is a "Continuous Fire" option in the game settings.
With this enabled, you can simply hold down the default fire button, and shots will be fired continuously. However, this doesn't change the frequency at which the shots are fired in sequence...
This is NOT like a Turbo-Button with a high frequency.
Essentially it just unleashes one shot after another, at the same frequency like the three-round burst are released.

- You can't choose a different camera setting.
There is only one third-person perspective; there is no first-person view or a more distant third-person camera option.
This is important to me for the following reason:
I feel the camera is positioned too close to my own ship.
Between the ship model itself and the effects it generates—such as the wingtip vortices or the booster speed lines—too much of the action and the surrounding environment is obscured.
I also find the effective range for targeting and shooting down enemies to be generally too short;
it "feels" like they have to get really close before you can take them out.
This often leads to the following effect:
The explosions and effects and attacks from (enemy) objects are so huge and the opacity is so high and often linger so long and the distance between the screen and the effect decreases so quickly that you fly right through them—momentarily losing sight of your flight path or what lies beyond—and because the camera is so close to your ship, these explosions end up blocking a huge portion of the screen and your field of view (even obscuring your own ship in some cases).
One reason for this could be that the effects here—perhaps due to the cel-shaded look—are the most time not really transparent but often fully opaque, meaning each effect detracts somewhat from the on-screen clarity.
The best example is the waterfalls in Stage 1, which completely lack transparency.
Greater distance from the entire scene—achieved through a more distant camera angle—might potentially improve the situation.

- During "Rail-Flight Mode" sections, you have full range of motion to aim and shoot enemies anywhere from the sky down to the ground. However, in "All-Range Mode," aiming upwards is restricted—as if by an invisible wall—preventing you from aiming higher, even though enemies constantly dodge or fly up to those altitudes. It’s not fun...

- There are no loops (somersaults) or U-turns (Immelmann turns). Since the game compares itself to—or even outright copies—*Star Fox*, I find the absence of these features disappointing. I fully expected them to be included; in fact, I hoped the game would take these maneuvers and also a step further and offer additional useful ones.

- Control customization options are very limited.
Fundamentally, you cannot remap the controller or keyboard buttons within the in-game settings.

- The energy bar for Boost and Break has to be fully charged before I can use them again... That means I can't manage my energy reserves in tight situations if I want to pull off multiple maneuvers; instead, I'm dependent on having a full bar for every single action...
So why have the bar at all?


For me, much of what was mentioned above forms the foundation of why I like Star Fox and why the series worked so well.
But with this game, many of those fundamental elements fall by the wayside are not replaced (by sth. better) and sour me on the game before I’ve even really settled into it.
As many other reviews also state, it feels like a stripped-down or inferior version of Star Fox—repackaged with different graphics and offering few original ideas of its own.

I actually wanted to see more of the game, but I was so preoccupied with its many "flaws"—and afraid that playing any longer would void my right to a refund and leave me stuck with a game I didn't like—that I stopped gathering further impressions or providing more feedback.

Still, perhaps this will help others make their own decision.

Depending on what happens with future updates—and whether some of the things I criticized are improved or can be adjusted or tweaked later on—I’d be happy to give the game another chance.

For the time being, I'm sticking with N64 or 3DS versions of Star Fox...



Addendum:
Something I hadn't noticed at all until now—but which naturally represents another downside—is the completely missed opportunity to integrate either a PvP or a co-op mode into the game, whether via local, shared-screen, split-screen, or online multiplayer.

Also, compared to the *Star Fox* source material, the vehicle variety has also been scaled back. There is neither a Landmaster nor a Blue-Marine.



Recommendation:
For anyone interested solely in experiencing *Star Fox 64* on PC—and who isn't already well-informed on the subject—I’d like to share the following information:

There is a group of modders and developers called "Harbour Masters" that specializes in creating native PC ports (via decompilation) of classic Nintendo 64 games.
They make it possible to play old console games smoothly on a computer—provided you own a legal ROM from an actual game cartridge—while adding modern, optional features like ultra-wide support, network multiplayer, upscaling, bug fixes, cheats, randomizer, modding menu, extensive input options, and more...
Furthermore, these PC ports are already accompanied by fan-made mods that take the experience to a whole new level—adding things like 4K resolution, new content, and complete overhauls of worlds, textures, and models.

They have already done fantastic work with other N64 titles:
Ship of Harkinian --> A PC port of *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time*
2ship2harkinian --> A PC port of *The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask*
Lighthouse --> A port of the classic *Banjo-Kazooie*
Ghostship --> A port of the classic *Super Mario 64*

There is currently also an ALPHA version available for *Star Fox 64* under the name "Starship."
However, I haven't encountered a single problem in this ALPHA so far.
The port runs absolutely smoothly, free of errors and crashes, and—aside from multiplayer—all other content is already fully present. You can even choose to fix bugs that existed in the original N64 version via the options menu; mod support is included; controls (incl. gyro and rumble) are supported; and also modern graphics settings and resolutions.

Look, let's be real here: everyone wants to compare Wild Blue Skies to Star Fox 64, and for good reason: it actively does everything it can to remind you of its pedigree, and references the game very often in myriad ways. But it's unfair to compare a game to one of the all-time greats, because that's a losing battle.

However, Star Fox 64 is 30 years old, and Wild Blue Skies seems to have not learned anything from its game design. The blaster feels bad. The lock-on charge shot is fine but lacks punch. The boost feels fine, and the side-to-side movement on the roll is actually kinda neat. Forcing you to pick between safely dodging and firing your blaster is a good choice for moment-to-moment gameplay, but it doesn't really pay any dividends.

The brake sucks. Not only do you basically never need to use it, you lose altitude because your sci-fi planes apparently still abide by regular flight physics? It feels bad to use any time you do try to use it, so if you do try to play Wild Blue Skies, you can safely avoid the left trigger.

Here's a shorter list of Pros and Cons:

Pros:
- The art direction is very nice (minus the way enemies and bosses flash white, which hurts my eyes)
- I like the Cloudcutter ship designs
- The animated intro is neat

Cons:
- No Loop or U-turn makes the game feel very boring to play. With no fun tricks to pull off, it just feels like something is missing from the game-- and this is so evident that hitting the edge of a free-flight zone doesn't turn you back into the arena! You just sort of rub against an invisible wall.
- The music is basically only there so there's no dead silent moments. I can't think of a single track that I heard that left any impression.
- The "writing" in the game is boring as all hell. The characters have no discernible personality and the pre- and post-mission dialogue is canned and does nothing to add color to the game.
- The bosses are all, unfortunately, very lame. They mostly are just bullet sponges with very little to see in terms of combat, which is what makes it more annoying at how much time they take up.
- Speaking of time, the stages are short! Really short! There's nothing to really sink your teeth into, and every set piece is over and gone before you get to see anything interesting with them.
- The final boss is just Andross (phase 1) from Star Fox 64 but with a mouth laser this time. The second phase is basically the first phase but with a new bullet to dodge.
- The characters have basically no attachment to the events of the game
- THE OPENING CUTSCENE THAT EXPLAINS THE GAME IS UNSKIPPABLE???
- Whenever you unlock the conditions for a new path, you are never awarded with a new boss fight, which is kind of sad.

I feel bad that I have to come down so hard on a $15 game because it's evident that the team really cared about this project, but unfortunately it misses the mark so much that I can't in any way recommend this game to anyone. There's really, genuinely, no sauce to this game that I can't find elsewhere or better. It is so dead set on reminding you of Star Fox 64 that it doesn't remember to set itself apart. I don't know a damn thing about Bowie, Chuck, Thorne, or Roe-- except that Chuck used to fly with one member of this game's Star Wolf.

Even the stages and level chains are suspiciously too close to the source to call it its own thing. I'd rather play Starfox Zero than this title and that had the uniquely bad Wii U controls. Also, why is the squad called the "Blue Bombers" they pilot neither blue aircraft nor bombers. I'd best describe their Wind Cutters as Attack aircraft.

It's consistent with an East Asian clone of a successful title that tries to capture some segment of the existing market through nostalgia. What the devs failed to realize is that Star Fox fans don't want another Star Fox 64 remake, we want something, anything that expands on the genere.

Save yourself the $15 there are other On-Rails shooters that are much better experiences with more character and story than this one.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe worst thing to happen to Wild Blue Skies is that Nintendo went ahead and released Star Fox (2026).

Wild Blue Skies’s explicit goal is to recapture the feeling of playing Star Fox 64. It is not merely “inspired by” that game. From its foundation upward, it attempts to recreate what Star Fox was and deliver that experience to a modern audience. At one point, that ambition was respectable. Star Fox has long been viewed as a series Nintendo has either forgotten or mishandled, so an independent effort to bottle the magic of the 1997 classic carried a certain appeal.

Then Nintendo both announced and released their remake of Star Fox 64 well before Wild Blue Skies could launch. The comparison is no longer against a nostalgic memory of a game many players know only from childhood or YouTube footage. It is now a direct comparison against the game itself and its polished modern recreation. Players can experience the original or the official remake pretty easily, and Wild Blue Skies does not come out of that comparison favorably.

Some will argue that comparing the two is unfair and that Wild Blue Skies should be judged on its own terms. That is fair to a degree. Yet the game itself invites the comparison by the very nature of its design. The core mechanics are copied from Star Fox 64. Multiple levels are copied. Bosses are copied. In several cases the copying is nearly one-to-one, with the only consistent caveat being that the Wild Blue Skies version is shallower than the original.

Flying and combat feel identical. The weapon upgrade system is the same. The boost, brake, and barrel-roll systems are the same. The bomb mechanic and its limits are the same. The healing system is the same. The only notable control changes are that rapid-fire and charge shots now have their own dedicated inputs (a lateral change rather than a clear improvement or downgrade) and that this game removes the ability to perform a loop or U-turn, something that actively hurts the experience later on. Hell, even the story is essentially the same.

When I say levels were copied, there are stretches that feel nearly shameless. The opening stage, Archipelago, has you approach the shore from the water, save an ally before entering the city proper, fight through while larger enemies create obstacles, rescue another ally and then follow them through an obstacle course that unlocks a new area for the next level. All of it done in exactly the sequence of Corneria from Star Fox 64, with the single difference that completing the obstacle course does not lead to a different boss at the end of the stage.

There is a level whose objective is to shoot out a series of searchlights over water. There is a level where you must prevent bombers from hitting a central target. There is a train-chase level. There is a stage that copies Bolse almost beat-for-beat. The game even has its own Area 6 equivalent, simply swapping starships for air balloons. The rival faction, this game’s version of Star Wolf, called the Prowlers, appears in the exact corresponding missions where Star Wolf showed up in the original. Worst of all, reaching the final boss produced a genuine cringe from me at just how devoid of subtlety the copying is: the design, the different forms you fight, and even the escape sequence after the boss is defeated all track the original with almost no variation.

This is not homage. This is not inspiration. It is a lesser version of a game that came out in 1997, a version with fewer levels and fewer modes. There is no landmaster or blue-marine, and what flight variety exists simply feels thinner than what came before. The dogfights against the Prowlers illustrate the problem clearly. In the original, Star Wolf could put up a real challenge by looping, dodging, and weaving; precision and aggression were required to bring them down. Even when the 2026 remake made those fights somewhat easier with health-bar tracking and smoother controls, they still demanded attention. Here, the Prowlers lack those maneuvers entirely. They become a joke where a quick flurry of charge shots while lazily trailing them is enough to end the encounters. The fights come and go so quickly that facing them feels almost embarrassing.

The visuals are one area where I can offer genuine praise, though problems still surface. Wild Blue Skies features a cleaner, more cartoonish aesthetic that favors bold, distinct designs. The result is a simple, vibrant style that makes each level and enemy stand out. Then the game undermines that strength with an atrocious draw distance. Normally a limited draw distance is used to maintain performance and is masked by fog that hides the horizon while the level streams in. This game does not bother with that solution. Instead you see a full backdrop of horizon, mountains, and sky, and the actual level geometry simply pops into existence right in front of it. You will be flying forward, a character will mention a cave ahead, and the cave will materialize out of thin air. It is the kind of disregard for basic presentation that makes one question the competence of the team. Even in open free-flight sections, where visible terrain is already limited, the draw distance remains strangely restricted.

Star Fox (2026) took the original game and recreated it nearly perfectly. Rather than altering the core gameplay, it expanded the narrative with more detailed cutscenes that unfold according to the route you choose. It is not without its own faults. In the end, it is fantastic primarily because Star Fox 64 itself is fantastic, but the remake recaptures that experience while making only light, thoughtful adjustments (At this point it shouldn't be hard considering they've remade Star Fox about 2 million times). It is not an insult to say that Wild Blue Skies is a lesser game than Star Fox 64. It was designed to be Star Fox 64. Judging it purely on its own merits is difficult when nearly all of its merits are borrowed. The real insult is this:

As a Star Fox experience, it is not only outdone by the game it is trying to copy, it is outdone by a porn game that released a month earlier.

Starbreed takes the Star Fox gameplay framework and actually puts a unique twist on it, adding greater level variety and meaningful customization of weapons, defensive options, and special abilities for each mission. It is surreal to admit, but a game where the primary goal is sexual gratification managed to create a more compelling Star Fox clone.

On that bizarre note, the audience I would recommend Wild Blue Skies to is quite limited. The original Star Fox 64 is not difficult to get your hands on, and the official remake is available to anyone with a Switch 2. Wild Blue Skies does have two practical advantages: it is available on PC and is significantly cheaper than the remake. If you do not mind playing a lesser version of those games, there is no real harm in giving it a try. It at least runs well and controls decently. If you have access to either the original or the 2026 remake of Star Fox 64, play those instead. If you are looking for a Star Fox-style game that actually does something interesting with the formula, try Rogue Flight or Starbreed.

There is a timeline in which Wild Blue Skies released while Star Fox was still considered forgotten. In that world, players might have shrugged and said, “well It’s basically Star Fox 64, and this is as good as it gets right now.” That is pure speculation. If you really, really want to check the game out, it is short enough that you can finish it well before Steam’s refund window closes. See what the fuss is about. And if you belong to the group of players who have never experienced Star Fox, cannot easily access the official titles, but still want a close approximation, then this is servicable enough.

Wild Blue Skies did a lot of things right; full game on launch, Steam Deck compatibility, and a fantastic artstyle, all from an indie studio. Yes, it is a Star Fox Clone and yes, they almost "copied" the SF64 story to the letter, but this was basically a dead genre until a few weeks ago. The only thing the developers did "wrong" was to wait to release this game shortly after Nintendo released their almost perfect remaster of Star Fox 64. I really wish this game to succeed and maybe we get fresh new scenario from this developer in the future! The universe in itself they created is not bad at all and the story is fun to play through. \n\t\t\t\t\tI was really looking forward to this one, but after doing my first run through the game, I really can't be bothered to play another route. This review is only based on the experience of one route through the game, so keep that in mind.

First, some positives. I think the character designs are pretty good, and the voice acting is generally excellent. The graphics are colorful and pleasantly cel-shaded, if not a little generic.

Next, I'm going to list some of my issues without comparing it to Star Fox (which is very hard):
- The on-rails levels are very slow, and only go straight forward. There aren't really any interesting setpieces or events that happen mid-level to mix things up. You and the camera are both on a slow march straight forward until you get to the boss.
- Somehow, the free-flight levels are even slower. The brake-drifting is useful for turning around, but you're a sitting duck if you're not constantly boosting.
- Your squadmates do very little and die very quickly. I'm not sure if this is a bug or what, but when Thorne asked for help in the first level, I shot down his enemy tail within 2 seconds, and Thorne had already lost 75% HP.
- Although I liked the voice acting, the characters didn't say much to get me invested in their personality or relationships. The banter is pretty weak, which is unfortunate when the game already has so little story, and so little level-specific narrative.
- I would have loved more level variety. All the levels take place on one planet, and the main distinction between them is the biomes they take place in, though multiple levels share a biome. I kinda thought there'd be at least one space level, but maybe that's on me.

Finally, I have to compare it to Star Fox 64. I'm fine with it copying a lot of the basic mechanics and tropes, but so much of what it copies takes it from "inspiration" to "cheap uninspired knockoff" territory for me.
- The exact same setup and story, but less. The country exiles their genius engineer (not to be confused with a certain genius scientist), who later amasses an army to take over the world. Your squad of 4 furries (and one non-furry by technicality) is sent out to deal with them.
- The exact same presentation style. You select the next stage from a map that's laid out nearly 1:1 with SF64. Before each level, the commander on the left side of the screen says one sentence about the level, and the squad leader on the right side of the screen responds. During the level, a squadmate will ask for help and you need to shoot an enemy that's chasing them. At the end of the level, it says Mission Complete, and the squad members check in one-by-one before you zoom off. Same ordering, pacing, everything. The character models in the ships even bob their heads instead of moving their mouths, just like in SF64.
- Even on the one route I played, there were multiple levels that were just SF64 levels (each of these is going to be a separate bullet point to make it more readable). The first stage, Archipelago, is just Corneria but with less going on, and really weird scaling (the buildings are tiny - almost the same size as your ship). One of your squadmates flies through a few obstacles and challenges you to follow them, and if you do, you go down the "better" path. If you don't, you get taken to a boring all-range-mode boss. There are even a number of enemy placements, movements, and formations that are ripped straight out of Corneria.
- Mines is exactly Fichina with desert theming. You fly around a base in all-range mode shooting lazy enemies for a while until you plant a bomb in the base (in SF64, you instead discover that a bomb has been planted in the base). At this point in the level, the Star Wolf equivalent comes in and fights you, exactly like Fichina. It's exactly the same level.
- Foundry is exactly Bolse with lava theming - it's even in the same spot on the level-select map, on the bad path right before the final level. It's a slowly spinning platform where you take out stationary targets, and once you do, it exposes the slowly-spinning cylinder core, which has little weak points all over it. Once you expose the core, the Star Wolf equivalent comes and attacks you again, just like on Bolse. It's really blatant.
- Final boss spoilers: It just Andross again. It's a giant head and two hands.

Because of all of this, the game unfortunately felt like an uninspired rip-off of Star Fox 64 with higher graphical fidelity, but worse level design, bosses, music, and banter. After my first run I had to ask myself why I wouldn't just play SF64 again and have a better time. Sorry, dev team - I'll keep an eye on your work, I hope I have a better time with your next one.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wanted to like this game but it just isn't doing it for me unfortunately. The game feels like worse Star Fox 64. Every mission I played is basically a copy/paste of a Star Fox 64 mission but not as refined. I refunded after about an hour of trying to get into the game.

I'm also really not into the visuals. Namely, the environment draw distance is terrible. There's one notable level where I was in a cave, but it also renders the mountain skybox outside the cave as you're flying through it, which eliminated the illusion that I was in any kind of a contained cave-like space at all. I'm not sure if that was a technical or artistic limitation but it really didn't work for me, and this game has draw distance issues like that across the board.

The gameplay is also just not quite there for me. Again, it kinda just plays like worse Star Fox 64, especially when compared to the recent actual Star Fox 64 remake on Switch 2. This game has similarly branching paths, but even after an hour of gameplay it was never obvious to me what would trigger one path vs the other, whereas in both the original and Switch 2 remake of 64 it's made pretty clear, and that gives more meaning to the branching paths. Here I kinda just felt like... oh I guess I got that one, huh, okay then. You die really quickly in this game, and there aren't nearly enough opportunities for health pickups, especially during dogfights. And, another dogfight complaint, when you're fighting this game's version of Star Wolf there didn't appear to be any enemy health indicator that I could find, making it feel kinda unsatisfying when trying to shoot them down. I also had several instances of the Star Wolf-esque characters clipping through terrain that I obviously can't go through to escape from me, which was a bit frustrating.

I thought the brief demo was promising but the final release really did not do it for me. Perhaps others will find more enjoyment, so far I appear to be a bit in the minority for not having enjoyed my time with this game.\t\t\t\t\t

You're gonna tell me you couldn't nail a game's gameplay that was made back in 1997 using modern game development tools in 2026, let alone not code in the f*cking U-Turn and Somersault from the game you're copying?

However, Starfox 64 is my favourite game of all time and I can say with certainty that this isn't well designed--- it has a lot of problems that are apparent instantly to anyone who knows what these games should feel like.

I feel sad--- cause I want this to be amazing.. I was so excited and then instantly forgot to barrel roll and took a laser shot to my childhood---

The controls are freaking awful, same issue with the beta that was never looked into or addressed.

using Mouse, the aimer takes forever to move where you want, even with the response set to Very High, then it just goes towards one direction and doesnt have a auto centering option

using controller, the aimer is insanely fast and responsive (makes absolutely no sense) then the aimer auto centers, like your crosshair goes to the middle insanely fast and stays there

its like the mouse settings and controller settings are reversed for no reason. only giving this a avoid simply because of this garbage, oh and BTW there is literally NO mission select, its either you replay the mission or go to the next, then once you complete it im sure you can go back to the other ones but you have to finish it, if you lose all your lives, well baby, restart the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game ( my adventure mode restarted completely after all my lives were lost)\t\t\t\t\t

I did run into the occasional performance hitch but it didn't negatively affect me during gameplay. If you're curious, check the demo.
