\n\t\t\t\t\tPut ~100 hours into the private playtest before release. Which means I can confidently say: this game is incredibly special.

The theme is amazing. The soundtrack elevates the theme to insane heights. Dynasty Warriors but in scotland is just a slam-dunk.

There's so much meat on this game even in this initial early access stage. 3 heroes who each have multiple equipment pieces (including multiple weapons per hero, which completely change their movesets, like turning the parry-heavy Wallace into a dodge-focused character). An ascension difficulty system. A metric ton of items, both baseline and unlockable. Different captains and companions to recruit and help buildcraft before you even start a run.

And, most importantly, the game is just fun. The hero movesets are simple enough (at least on base weapons, some weapons do get tricky lol) that you don't have to constantly go back to the pause menu to look at your combo list, but complex enough that you feel like you have multiple responses to different types of enemies at every point. Objectives and maps are incredibly varied, and even repeating the same map with different Clan builds, different weapons, different objectives, etc ends up staying fresh and exciting.

Overall, this game is one of the easiest recommendations I've ever made, even at this initial release. And It's only going to get better as time goes on. Buy it NOW\t\t\t\t\t

It blends the massive battles of Dynasty Warriors, touches of Mount & Blade’s combat, and the addictive progression of Risk of Rain, then piles on upgradable armies, parrying, synergies, ridiculous builds, and completely unhinged combos. There’s so much happening that I can’t even begin to list it all. Absolutely Chad release even for EA.

I bought it yesterday and somehow dumped five hours into it without realizing where the time went. After spending years with Warframe and finally nearing the end of that grind, I’ve been desperate for another game that scratches the same itch. Somehow, this does it, in the weirdest and most unexpected way possible.

I love roguelikes that trap me in the “okay, one more run” cycle, and this absolutely has that quality. It’s already up there with Megabonk for me, and I’m pushing nearly 200 hours in that game. I’m a complete sucker for this kind of experience.

This deserves far more praise and attention. I desperately hope the developer continues expanding this format because it is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ incredible. I would gladly pay for DLC in the future. Insanely fun, surprisingly deep, endlessly grindy, exactly my kind of game, echoing statements of middle of the run saves, that would be the best fix ever.

This game has a ton of personality.

Pros:
  • Unique art style that immediately stands out from other roguelites.
  • Runs incredibly well—even when the battlefield is packed with enemies.
  • Fairly priced for what's currently on offer.
  • Combat feels impactful with the combos.

Cons:
  • Like many roguelites, the gameplay loop starts feeling repetitive after enough runs.
  • Being in Early Access, content is still fairly limited.
  • Bosses feel like damage sponges. Even when you execute your rotations correctly and avoid mechanics, fights can drag on for 10+ minutes.
  • Long boss fights start feeling like endurance tests rather than exciting encounters.

Summary:
There's a really solid foundation here. The visuals are memorable, performance is excellent, and the combat has that satisfying "one more run" feeling every good roguelite should have.

\n\t\t\t\t\tDynasty Warriors: Scotland is the gameplay. Its just well done hack and slash, with some Risk of Rain 2 elements to boot. Co-op takes the game to ascended territory.

The Roguelite elements are there in the overworld map and they are apart of the core run gameplay, and they are done exceptionally well i think.

The Art is absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of late 2000's cell shaded comic book style

The Combat is fun, the enemies design is great and varied, the maps are are lot of fun to run through, and the bosses are pretty well designed.

The Content that is here is polished, and is very substantial for the price. This game is clearly made with a lot of love by developers who had a great idea and are executing it amazingly. Such a product like this should be supported.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a tough one, but I'll open with why I'm giving it a thumbs down. This game has the mechanics of a solid hack and slash arena fighter. It has a dodge, and it has a parry.... but it doesn't do anything with these mechanics, leaving me frustrated by both their inclusion and how nearly everything enemy design wise is so counterintuitive to them. The enemy scaling is designed to make you grind, grind, grind, grind. But the maps are static, the bosses are BAD, and it's.... tedious.

When you first start, you are introduced to "combos" with your sword. Let me just stop right here and say X,X,Y (on an Xbox controller). That's it. Doing any other combo is not only pointless, but detrimental because you will do less damage AND have a longer animation to execute it.

The dodge is on a cooldown with your default (and probably most useful) character. Sigh. But, we have a parry, which does work..... sometimes. The enemies flash before they attack, and they purposely delay your attack to throw off your timing. Cool, fine, no problem. Learn, get better, parry, right? No. As these enemies are delaying their attacks, dozens, and I mean DOZENS of tiny red circles are popping up under your feet because an army of archers is shooting at you. So you dash back, get hit any way, and then a Commander (elite) charges you with a spear from all the way the fudge over yonder.

I cannot overstate how absurdly JANK the combat is when nearly all of my screen is body blocked by fodder, red AOE marks on the ground, and a bunch of enemies that I can't do anything about because I'm too busy trying to dodge the entire world and also somehow still parry the incoming attacks I can no longer see.



The visual clarity in this game is non existent, making the combat feel highly unsatisfying, and that's before you get to an Act Boss. Oh God, here we go.

So, the first actual boss in the game is a giant ogre looking thing. And.... he does...... very little. He slashes twice, then does a huge run across the screen, then does an AOE, then falls down so you can hit it a little bit. After getting him down to half health, he becomes invincible and then does all of the aforementioned, but now there are red balls of fire flying at you, that land on the ground and cause an AOE.

The biggest problem with this fight is that it's boring. You are just running a quarter mile in every direction trying to chase this stupid thing down while he bumblefks himself by swinging at whatever, spraying fire lava rocks wherever. I'm not fighting a large enemy that wants to end my run, I'm fighting an HP bar that refuses to lessen because somebody thought it was a good idea to turn this into a walking simulator, to have me walk down this giant ogre and slash slash walk walk.... just.... bad. Sigh. Oh, you run about as fast as grass grows by the way.


After a nice stroll of avoiding red fire balls and whatever that boss is not doing, I find myself in Act 2. Now the fodder enemies have an HP bar, and a shield bar. Great. At this point I ask myself where my damage is coming from, and I quickly realize that a healing fountain, while rare, costs about 100-450 in run coins (not meta, you don't keep these). BUT! There are chests, that cost exactly as much. The chests contain power ups for the run, but 99.9% of them are flat % increases to a stat. And a small increase, at that. So.... do I get +00.1% slash damage, or do I save for the inevitable need to heal when the game overwhelms with inflated HP and JANK? What a terrible feeling.

Did I mention you get 10-20 coins per Commander killed, by the way? Ha. Ha. Blah.

Anyways, after struggling through, I find myself fighting the Act 2 Boss. The Banshee, they call it. Vega from Street Fighter, where 95% of the fight is spent waiting for it to actually be fightable as it flings random buzzaws at you for what feels like a year before doing a slide that has the most JANK hurt box I have ever seen in a hack and slash video game. Sometimes you can parry it when the animation starts across the map, other times you just dodge 3 miles out of the way and still get hit. It's really a technical marvel how bad this particular attack is.

After somehow not ALT+F4'ing out of this game, I found myself in Act 3.... and I made it past two battles before I got rushed by 6 elites, who at this point are functionally mini bosses, about 95 archers, and WHATEVER else was hitting me.

This is where I stopped to write this review. Will I beat it? Probably. Can I? Definitely. Is it fun? No.

The meta progression in this game reminds me of a mobile game that shut the pay store down but didn't lower the costs in game. There are green stones, and red crystals. Minimum upgrade cost? 50. Maximum acquisition amount? Well, see, in Act 1, you get the green stones. About 25 of 'em, yeah.... uh huh. And then in Act 2, you get the red stones, bout 25 of 'em, yeah.... uh uh. PER RUN! PER FKIING RUN! OHHH MY GOOD LORD PER RUUUUN! So the minimum upgrade cost is 50, 1 out of 3 or 4 tiers. 50>150>200(?) Why in the blue hell am I only getting 25 of these fkin things per map? Sigh.

Then you have the... uh... gold stuff. Gold meta coin... whatever. Anyways, you use this to upgrade your character and your army. Character upgrade costs are insanely high and do nothing but give you stat bonuses that don't actually solve or even begin to help any of the problems I described above. Army progression makes your army.... have better stats. By the way, the army gimmick, think of it as a cooldown on a special move and not as an actual army.

I like the combat in this game when it works, but it only works until you realize that most of the game is designed to pad play time. And you realize that when you die because you had no visual clarity and the enemy HP bars just.... won't... go.... down. There are only 3 Acts, and without artificial stat barriers and visual clutter this game would have been refunded an hour after purchase by nearly everybody for being short and shallow.

The random items you collect (if you just give up on the idea of healing, assuming you find a fountain to do so in the first place that is) don't actually change anything except a stat of yours that, functionally, does NOTHING for you.

The enemy HP is scaled astronomically for no reason. The visual clutter is impossible to see through. The boss fights (the 2 I played) are BAD. Boring waits, chasing them around, chipping at a GIANT HP bar, it's just bad game design. Not hard, not jank, BAD. I'm not expecting Sekiro, but I'm expecting more than.... what effectively plays like a glitched PS1 title where you walk around praying the boss comes back and then chip away at it trying to get it down before it fks off again.


So, as I said: There are only 3 Acts, and without artificial stat barriers and visual clutter this game would have been refunded an hour after purchase by nearly everybody for being short and shallow.
But extending the length it takes to finish the game does not make it something more, leaving me with not only a shallow game, but a hollow feeling and a bitter aftertaste.\t\t\t\t\t

Needs more luck elements. The fun of roguelikes are the broken builds or the unlikely combinations. The perks you can get all feel the same. There's no huge differences between runs. Feels like brute willpower to get different currencies to get the things that actually impact play. I dunno if I'd recommend it or not yet. Needs to learn lessons from games like Monster Train or Hades where each run is drastically different. The unique factor here are your armies you command. The combat feels fun at first but the combat turns into the light, light, heavy combo 95% of the time.
The upgrades didn't make me feel much more powerful than when you start.
Enemies having guard braking attacks and an instant follow up attack is just an unavoidable drain on health.
Archers not cancelling their attacks when you knock them out of the animation seems lazy.

It's Really Really Good!

I wasn't expecting to get hooked this quickly, but so damn good. The combat feels great, cutting through huge groups of enemies is satisfying, and the roguelite progression gives every run a reason to keep going. I also like that you're not fighting alone. Building up your Scottish battalion and watching your squad get stronger over time makes every campaign feel rewarding instead of repetitive.

What really surprised me is how polished it already feels. The art style stands out, the bosses are fun, and there's a good balance between challenging fights and those moments where you feel completely unstoppable. Playing with friends makes the chaos even better, but it's just as enjoyable solo. You can tell the developers have put real thought into the progression system instead of making it another generic hack and slash.

If you're into games like Deep Rock Galactic, Hades, or Dynasty Warriors, this is an easy recommendation. It already has a solid foundation, and it's only going to get better as more content is added.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game is enjoyable at first but becomes a grind as you hunt for rare currencies for base upgrades. The problems that make the game tedious are linked fundamentally.

- The game lacks moments where you FEEL strong. The only part of the game where you can feel your emblem build has an effect is on the first map. By the second map it becomes a wet noodle fest and you're stuck with spamming the same moves on captains to deal damage.

- Part of why it lacks "strong" moments is because you are always forced to choose between getting emblem passives for your character or getting rare currencies. Also, maps before the boss are always either heal, currency, or item and no emblems. Sure, you can choose the passives to make your character stronger for that particular campaign but what would be the point if you don't get those currencies you need for base upgrades after. You'd have wasted 30 minutes of playing if you don't bring back the currency you need. Maps should give me both emblem passives AND currency.

- The emblem passives themselves don't feel very effective beyond the first map. Even with upgrades, which is rare since you're forced choose currency, you don't really feel like your build is getting stronger.

- Heals are too expensive while recover too little. And because heals doesn't help much, any items or passives that give +% heal recovery are basically useless. 100 gold heals recover you for a measly 20 hp not to mention the gold cost almost doubles after the first boss making it 175 gold for 20 hp.

- Campaigns feel like they take too long. I don't want to have to play 30-45 minutes only to get 1-2 upgrades back on my base.

- Characters need more moves. Grabs, throws, AoE slams, running attacks, etc.. Some moves are unique to some characters like how only Wallace has a "running attack" when all characters should have this sort of move. As mentioned earlier, most of the time you'll be stuck with spamming the same moves to damage enemies. There should be a variety in combos and finishers.

I know this just released but the basic combat is lacking. Hopefully they can add variety in the future and make killing hordes more fun.\t\t\t\t\t

The framework of this game is there. Great concept, aesthetic, and good music.

Unfortunately, this game insists on wasting your time with massive HP pools, underwhelming boons, and a shockingly stingy upgrade economy. After about 25 hours between demo and main game, why have I still only unlocked 2 playable characters and 2 companions, even after getting far into Act 3?

Combat, especially late game, depends heavily on visual cues from enemies to block and parry, however the visual clarity of the combat is essentially non-existent, leading to every death being a "What killed me?" moment.

The game is genuinely good, just frankly inexcusably not-as-good-as-it-should-be given the endless good roguelike inspiration out there. I will change my review to positive once the game gets fleshed out and adjusted.\t\t\t\t\t

It's brilliant, it's gorgeous, the sound design is wonderful, the soundtrack is thumping, Combat is tight. It's a near perfect mashup of Dynasty Warriors and Risk of Rain.

But the problem is, and cannot stress this enough, I suck at it. I suck so completely that gitting good is literally impossible. The levels of suck I am consistently plumbing are both depressing and infuriating.

The scaling in this game is quite poor, gold is extremely scarce and you must be frugal about it, just to get underwhelming and boring items. The boons too are quite... boring. The stats are either egregious or don't synergize with other boons well at all. The combat is fun until you are fighting the same captain for 10 minutes because damage is so lacking.

I have faith in this game. I really want it to flourish. Please devs create a greater variety of boons and items, to allow for more experimentation (i.e buffing your soldiers, rarity for boons randomized, maybe even boons from different clans clash) and please please PLEASE give us more ways to earn gold in each level. The challenges are nice but there's just no econ.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tProbably the first game I’ve felt this conflicted about leaving a review. I will preface this by saying I enjoyed the game for a brief time but the cracks show pretty quick. I think there’s a lot of potential here. The game did just enter early access and there are things I liked so I will say while my review is negative, I’m very open and receptive to changing my review to positive and will probably do so in a few updates. I think with time this will be a great game but my overall impressions will come off as mostly negative.

Let’s start off with the good things about this game. The art style is really standout. The characters you do get as of now (3) are varied in their combat approach and the Scottish folklore meets Dynasty Warriors gameplay is a really cool mash up. I wish more games took the Dynasty Warriors style and put it in a different locale or time period. The game is challenging and takes a bit of mastery to get good at. I like that items alone don’t really carry you and you must get good at dodging, parrying, and blocking and knowing when to use each of them as they are on a cooldown system. I find the bosses in each Act to be very fun and learning their moveset and conquering them felt awesome. The first time you face any of them it’s a bit overwhelming, but by the second or third encounter you get into a rhythm and can beat them relatively easy. If you’re not one for patience or recognizing patterns and movesets like in a souls-like, you will not enjoy this element but I found it to be very fun. There is also a lot of stuff to unlock for your character and plenty of stuff to unlock in the hub area.

And now time for the bad. This game just has way too much going on at once. It offers a parry and dodge system whose uses are on a cooldown but at times will throw so many captain (elite) tier enemies at you that you physically can not perform a single combo on one of them without being hit by another. Oftentimes while dodging, blocking, or parrying you’ll get bombarded with so many attacks that your cooldown is too slow and you’ll end up taking some sort of damage regardless of how masterful your dodging and parrying was. It is very frustrating to land 2 or 3 perfect parries and then get hit in the back out of nowhere by some unseen captain off-screen.

Speaking of which, the elites are not bound by the same level geometry restrictions as you are. The game has an attack prompt notifying you if an enemy is performing a blockable attack but many times the enemy will be behind a tree, inside some sort of geometry, or behind a fence where you can’t see the prompt. This means that while your focus is on another enemy you will randomly take a large chunk of damage. Several ranged captains also have the ability to shoot and their projectiles go right through objects. If you happen to be close to a wall, tree, pillar, or fence and aren’t aware an AI is shooting you through the other side then you’re getting hit. Several times early on I hid behind a pillar expecting to avoid ranged damage while my block recovered only to be hit anyways which was frustrating. Losing damage is a huge problem in this game too because it is pretty difficult to get back during a run.

The third character (Ridhau?) is far and away the worst character. He bas the benefit of a healing special but he is the slowest moving and more importantly the slowest attacking character of the 3 and his moves are so slow that by Act 3 he can not, on any Captain or mini-boss enemy, consistently perform a simple 3 hit combo without taking damage. You will get hit all the time. William and Brienne are very fun to use and he is just not. He has the slowest dodge cooldown recovery and lowest block stamina by a large margin. The other 2 characters you can very feasibly beat the entire game without any trinkets or emblems, but he can only do so with good item RNG. He needs some serious tweaking, probably with his dodge cooldown at least, and either a 2-hit combo or a faster combo moveset.

While the end-Act bosses were fun to master and learn, but at the end of the day there are only 3. There is one possible boss per act. You do not ever encounter any sort of variety. This gets incredibly boring incredibly fast. The areas you visit in each Act also do not change. So while there is a lot of equipment and items to grind for, it feels very repetitive and boring pretty fast. Once you beat the game twice it basically loses all steam which defeats the purpose of a roguelike. I don’t get that “just one more run” feeling from this game that I get from others. My eyes are on the clock and when you win you feel exhausted.

The worst offense this game has is that it’s simply too long. Taking the shortest path possible in each Act will still usually take you over 2 hours to complete. Pair this with the absolutely brain-dead issue that if you end the game you lose all progression and the fact that if you’re playing co-op and someone drops out, disconnects, or the game freezes (which did happen) then all of your time spent trying to win is wasted. This is also true for solo play which is mind-boggling. I seriously don’t know of any roguelike that doesn’t include some sort of progress save functionality for single player.

This is, to my mind, one of the longest roguelike games I’ve played. It takes way too long to finish Act 3 and I’ve had to kill myself to get the rewards from a run because I ran out of time and needed to take care of something outside the game before I made it to the final Act 3 boss even though I was well-equipped and able to beat the game.

I think with some boss variety, some extra characters (they have 2 unplayable ones), and some area variety, this game has a lot of potential. I think they should shorten the map or lower the amount of objectives on some maps to be a little more digestible. I don’t have a great idea on how to shorten the run but it drags on a little too long. For those curious about the game I would encourage you to try the demo first and make your own decision. Make no mistake, I want games like these to be successful and I hope that the devs take in some critical feedback and end up making this a great experience. For what they are charging right now, I think this is not a $25 experience at all and this needs some time to cook.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tTears of Metal is a fantastic hack-and-slash with a unique Scottish medieval setting. The art style looks great, the battles are absolutely insane, and unlocking new upgrades keeps every run exciting. I also love that you can recruit and unlock new characters, adding even more variety to the gameplay. If you're a fan of fast-paced action with plenty of progression, this one is definitely worth playing!

For now Proton Hotfix is needed to install the game on the Steam Deck.
