A (somewhat) comprehensive review of the game so far.

After playing for a little while and getting through some of the game, I feel like I can properly comment on my experience with it. Setting aside the initial trouble I had with account linking and Error 0064, theres a fair few things to talk about in regards to the actual game.

ADDENDUM! PLEASE READ!

About an hour after writing this review, I "finished" the game. The game is barely 6 hours long, if you don't screw around and do the core quests, you could probably get it done in about 4. This is criminal, this is a 30 dollar game, 50 if you got the deluxe edition. The final boss fight is pathetic, I didn't even realise it was the final boss fight until the endgame cutscene began to play, and the whole time I was PRAYING it was setting up the next part of the story. You do not need to upgrade your gear to beat the game, you do not need to plan out anything, you can just waltz right through and beat it with no issues; On hard mode mind you. I'm guessing the DLCs will add more content but this is outright theft, DLCs are meant to be expansions, not time/money gated parts of the main story.

What I said about difficulty no longer applies, this game is easy. Really, really easy. They took everything good about the first game and killed it, made it 4x shorter, and held our hands the entire way through. Do not buy this game, I can't even be optimistic that it will EVER be worth it. I think I'm going to go back to the first game.

More Bad News

If you were hoping the endgame would be fun, you are ♥♥♥♥ out of luck. The "endgame" consists solely of doing the side quests, or the following, mind numbing loop:

1. Wait for a soul storm
2. Find and destroy the storm generators (challenge consists primarily of enemy spam, hope you specced into AoE or you're going to die real quick).
3. Collect the loot from each one
4. Wait for a soul storm

That's the WHOLE ENDGAME. There is nothing like the ancient hunt system (which I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ loved and was perfect), there are no special mobs beyond what you've already fought, you just fight increasingly spongey enemies spawning on top of you and wait around for storms.

The Good

- Getting equipment is much less grindy than the first game, enchantments are no longer inherent, and can be rerolled. Unique equipment can also be rerolled, and gear can be infinitely levelled up to match progression if you are attached to it (though this gets expensive fast, more on that later.)
- Visually the game is quite stunning, a massive improvement over the first game, and the soundscape is very very pleasing; The Sift is so far very impressive.
- Performance wise the game runs fine, I can't comment on linux users who seem to be having immense issues even launching it, and my rig is probably overbuilt for this, but it runs smoothly even when lots of effects are happening in large hordes.
- The weapons I've used feel punchy and weighty, and each weapon has its own unique attack which is far more distinct than the first game.
- Difficulty is a step up for sure, its not impossible but they definitely aren't pulling any punches now. Manually choosing the difficulty is less granular than the first game; The slider from the first game is replaced with Easy, Normal, and Hard mode. Instead, reaching certain milestones (levels or bosses) will upgrade the "world state", which increases enemy health, loot quality, etc. READ ADDENDUM!
- The open world is quite nice, the linear missions were a little tiresome after a while, though I know plenty of people liked that. Dungeons are integrated into the world itself, which means you need to explore to find them, which I find enjoyable (sometimes).

The Bad

Some of this stuff is definitely going to be changed, but for now, these are my biggest complaints.

- Movement is buggy, especially around ledges you tend to rubberband and glitch around a fair bit. This has got me killed several times.
-Movement feels clunkier than the first game, ESPECIALLY in combat, I find myself trying to retreat during combat, but the game doesn't register that I have clicked away, and I continue attacking and end up dying.
- ONE ENCHANTMENT PER ITEM. This really threw me off. While armor is now split into 4 pieces, and you can enchant each one, weapons are substantially less powerful, and the builds you can make are much more restrictive; This was very disappointing.
- Enchantments themselves are watered down. Compared to the first game, many enchantments have been neutered and been made significantly less powerful. Radiance has been replaced with "Healing Smite," which only spawns a regeneratie aura on kill. Shockwave is much weaker, and Critical Hit is outright gone. Theres also significantly less enchantments overall, like, less than a quarter of what was in the first game. Really disappointing.
- Currency is hard capped very low. While a cap of 100 Echo Shards and 9.9k Emeralds might sound like a lot at first, within hours you quickly hit this cap and stop being able to hold more. Echo Shards are required for enchanting and are not refunded on disenchanting , and emeralds are used for upgrading and purchasing gear. You will find yourself constantly hitting the cap and either wasting time spent farming or having to constantly upgrade your gear to compensate. Not sure how this is going to work endgame. Fixed! Echo shards are still capped, but emeralds have been raised from 9.9k to 99.9k!
- Weapon selection is pretty bad, so is armor. The amount of both is abysmal compared to the first game, you see the same few weapons constantly. A lot of them are new, but that doesn't help.
- My favourite artifact (Gong of Weakening) is gone.
- Some missions (cough towers cough) are tedious and are a lot of walking long distances from point A to point B.
- Enemy respawn is aggressive. Leaving an area for more than a few seconds immediately repopulates it as if you were never there, sometimes packs of enemies spawn on your screen as you approach. Any missions involving backtracking will involve lots of fighting through the same area over and over.

There's probably more I've forgotten to mention, but these were my main issues with the game.

Is it worth it?

RIght now, in my opinion, no. Unless you really REALLY enjoyed the first game (I did,) in its current state it is not worth the price. Performance and login issues aside, the game feels very watered down compared to the first. I assume once I hit endgame things will open up more, but right now while I am having fun, there are things I can't ignore about the game.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tAt the time of this review, i have not completed the game, but have some notes.

1. Lack of variety: Many of the weapons don't feel unique, they play like reskins of one another. Compared even to the first Dungeons at launch, there is a glaring lack of an actual arsenal. There are not many armor sets either.

2. Wealth Cap: The game limits you to 100 Echo Shards and (as of the hotfix on October 1st, 2026) 99,999 Emeralds. The former is the problem. Shards are necessary for upgrading traders, rerolling gear stats, and enchanting items, but they are only dropped by the new Corrupted mobs, which take the place of the Enchanted mobs from the first game. There is no reason for this in a single-player optional co-op ARPG.

3. Enchanting Limits: Enchantments are limited to one per item. Mojang justifies this as there are now 12 gear slots (3 artifacts, 2 weapons, 4 armor pieces, 3 talismans) but this completely misses the point. While a single enchantment on each armor piece would be reasonable as that allows for four defensive enchantments, limiting weapon enchants only serves to handicap players artificially. Part of the fun of the original game was getting a weapon that could clear the whole screen. Now you have no real reason to try experimenting. The amount of enchantments was also reduced, and gathering them feels more like a chore than anything else.

4. Lack of Inventory: The game only allows you to carry 80 of each item. This may sound like a rather sizeable amount, but should you wish to have one of each item, excluding rarity but including unique variants, you will be unable to keep all of them. This was remedied with a storage chest in the first game years after launch, and its absence profoundly baffles me.

Overall, it feels like a single step forward with numerous steps back. Many problems present at the launch of the original game are now unaddressed again, such as the aforementioned lack of a storage chest. I have hope Mojang will listen to the community and make changes. They already have with emerald limits. I mentioned earlier the limit is 99,999. The first few days during and after launch on September 29th were plagued by a limit of 9,999. This does show they are listening and acting. Again, I simply pray they make the right changes.\t\t\t\t\t

I adore this game so far, however there are lots of changes here from the original that not a lot of players from the original are not gonna be used to. As someone who played up until around Apocalypse+20 in the first game, let me tell you all the changes that you should be on the lookout for. I've organized what changes there have been into categories, so you can look at the ones you care about.

Character Making Online vs. Offline
You cannot play Offline if you choose to play Online, and vice versa. I don't like this change, I don't see a reason for this other than them wanting to create FOMO for the game's upcoming DLC Launches, as you can no longer Duplicate your character anymore. In the old game, you could do Duplicate a hero profile, and if you had some of the limited time Special Event items, you could distribute them amongst your friends who didn't play them. On top of that, this change could also be the result to counter people modding the game like in the First Dungeons game. However you see it, this is a big loss for those who like playing Offline and then continuing Online.

Map Changes
The biggest change is what the developers describe as an "Interconnected World" and I think it's a welcome change! It's far from open world, there are still paths that are linear to arrive to the next area, but it's a welcome addition compared to the mission based style that the original game had. If you played the original, you understand how they layouts can get repetitive quick, especially if you played up until Apocalypse+, the DLC helped with that and I expect that to be the same case with Dungeons 2 once the player base tires out of the Base Game. I am a little disappointed that the map is so small, since I thought it would be bigger considering the map size in-game. The upcoming DLC will probably address that, but for the base game, I wish it had been bigger.

If you want more of that Mission based action, the closest you'll get are with the actual Dungeons that you can explore across the map. They are very similar to the first game, A Closed Off Linear area, with some small variations in each layout type. The Sift also features this with portals across the Overworld that are also very much that approach the first game had, so if you enjoyed that familiarity of the layouts of Dungeons from the first game, they're still not gone!

Combat Changes
Combat is a tiny bit slower compared to the first game, I suspect it's the added animations that they seemed to have refined this time around. However, the combat still feels good! (Death Cap Mushroom is also still available to acquire, and has not been heavily nerfed). Still super viable, and there are many more weapon types than before. With the addition of a Jump attack for each weapon type, I think the combat has changed for the better.

There are 4 Rarities for Gear, Common, Rare, Special, and Unique. Uniques are still the best gear type in the game, while Specials come second since their effects are still a little under Unique. Specific Gear Stats have been removed, so you can no longer see the amount of damage, or health you get with a specific item. Power level has been changed a lot, it feels useless, as it is only an indicator of what type of rarity loot you get now. Alongside being more tied in with milestones which I'll cover later. However, it's still similar as before. The higher the Power Level, the higher the chance of Uniques. While many will dislike this change, I think it's perfect when playing with friends since you'll still have that challenge along with everyone else, but still acquire the higher end loot drops that you've worked to attain.

Milestones
Understanding Milestones is kind of understanding what "World Level" you're at. Whenever the game starts realizing you're having an easy time with the combat, you'll earn a milestone. Milestones are what grant you higher progression for acquiring more Specials and Uniques. Along with the appearance of more Soul infused mobs. It's your way to reach the Apocalypse of this game. The max power level currently is around 150, so don't expect Apocalypse+ levels of difficulty. That being said, this game is still going to challenge you regardless of what power level you're in, and I think that's a great change! The problem with the original Dungeons, is that I don't think it captured just how unique it's gameplay felt until you reached Apocalypse. At launch, Dungeons 1 was regarded as a super easy game. The baby's "First Diablo" Game. However, that's not the case by the end of the lifespan of the game. I suspect we'll have a similar path for Dungeons 2.

Enchanting & Effects
Enchanting has change a little bit, as now your gear cannot have 3 Enchantment slots anymore. Only 1 per gear. However, that means for this game you can carry a total of 4 enchantments on your armor set, unlike the first game's 3 max slot. This is a bit of a drawback for weapons, but effects make up for that. Effects were in the previous game, except they weren't always present in every Base gear type. Uniques always had a least one effect, but depending on your base gear type, you may have either have had a total of 2 or 3 effects. Dungeons 2 changes this by having all Specials and Uniques have 2 effects that you can reroll with help from the Villagers and some Echo Shards. No more, no less. Until you beat the game, you won't be able to progress higher than 2 effects on each piece of gear. Gear no longer brings the enchantment options they had before, instead you'll have to seek out enchantment books throughout the overworld, and once you secure them, you'll be able to place them on your gear piece without losing them. You can disenchant or enchant the item any number of times you want as long as you have the echo shards.

Artifacts now go up to Special Rarity, which means Effects are now included in Artifacts! This is the big one. On top of the base artifact, you can get two different effects that you can reroll with Echo Shards. Which means you can have a total of 6 effects with your artifacts. Once you reach post game, that can become up to 9 effects! Since you can reroll them, you can make them any effect that compliments your build. For example, I've ingrained all of my current artifacts to have extra poison damage upon activating them for my poison build. This feels really good from what I've played, and I finally managed to reach the endgame for Dungeons 2. I actually managed with just Unique gear and 2 effects with each piece of equipment, so you don't need the 3 effects to reach endgame. However, it does make it an easier time to progress for higher power levels by finishing the game's story first. That way, you can attain those 3 effects for all your equipment, and you'll have an easier time than I did going through those Milestones.

Villagers
Blacksmith, Enchatsmith, Merchant Trader, are all present in this game. Gift Wrapper, Luxury Merchant, and Mystery Merchant are unfortunately not present yet. However, even if only these 3 Villagers, it's easier than ever to Disenchant, Reroll, or Buy new items from the Villagers. They'll help you retain some gear you want to either keep by upgrading their power level, or change according to the build your making. So they help achieve what kind of playstyle you're going for, definitely use these guys as much as you can.

Talismans
These are extra buffs that can be unlocked with Side Quests. Each one can be leveled up to the max level of 3 through gradual use. Definitely experiment with each one for whatever build you rock, so try to finish as many side quests that feature Talismans.

\n\t\t\t\t\tSo after beating the main story of the game and completing a lot of side content, I can reasonably say.....I'm disapointed, not because the game is bad, it's honestly pretty good, and it genuinely hurts to say because I'm a diehard fan of the first game, like it's literally one of my favourite games of all time and it's really sad to the sequel I was so excited for be kinda buns.

Bugs aside, one of my main issues with the game is the fact that they don't show you item stats, like I genuinely cannot fathom WHY they chose to hide them, it's like the game thinks you're a dumbass that simply can't understand basic numbers, it's rubbish!

Another thing is the artifacts, I HATE the artifact system in this game, because now, EVERY SINGLE artifact takes soul to use, ALL OF THEM!

The main point of soul in the first game was to balance out stronger artifact by requiring you to farm kills to use them, now that every artifact takes soul, soul is abundant and some artifacts are useless.

Like I seriously dislike the new artifact system, because now in the early game, you barely get to use your artifacts at all, and in the late game, all you do is spam them because you basically get infinite soul and there's barely any cooldowns anymore, it's pathetic.

Now onto the health potion in this game. It sucks. Like really sucks. In the first game, you had to be careful with your heath potion, only using it when you needed, and you had to play smart while it was on cooldown or it was game over.
In this game, your health potion is literally just something you spam, since for whatever reason this game doesn't let you have more than 100 health (135 with trinket, still terrible) you have to constantly use your potion, and the game knows this, because the cooldown is much shorter. it's braindead, and got rid of whatever little strategy there was for it in the first game.

Now, the enchantment system I have mixed opinions on.
On one hand it can get rid of the kind of annoying and grindy RNG of the game
but on the other, it just feels kinda lame, not to mention the options are pretty limited, and some are just straight up bad, which is alright when you think about it, obviously some enchants are gonna be better than others, that's just the way it is, no matter how hard you try to balance something, in a game like this, some things are just going to be better no matter what.

(Now this might just be me)

My issue with that is the fact that once I find a good enchant, I'm just gonna stick with it throughout my playthrough, I never felt inclined to try anything else because I have a choice not to, because why would I go out of my way to use something worse? what's the point? why would I want to be weaker?

All in all, it's an alright game, just not what I expected, granted the expection might've been too high since I absolutely love the first game. as for if you should buy it? up to you. I personally wasn't a fan and god knows it's INSANELY overpriced, but still a good game.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI thoroughly enjoyed the first game, but was on the fence about buying this one and I'm not sure if I made the right choice. The game is simply not in a finished state, my main issue being the enemy ai. The enemies are able to track your character while using the stealth artifact that makes you invisible. The general pathing is not great and enemies frequently get stuck on walls. The enderman is particularly bad, if it gets within attack range but you are moving directly away from it, it simply wont attack a lot of the time, just sort of matching the movement of the player and staying withing range. This makes it so much more difficult to actually space out attacks which is super important in this game without the ability to spam dodge rolls. There is also a new enemy, the illager with the pickaxe, that just won't attack you if you stand still for some reason, these are some of the things that I've experienced at least. The addition of jumping is fun, but the jump attacks are waaaaay too powerful, I frequently find myself jumping around and spamming them because it just works that well. I would say that I prefer how the levels worked in the previous game over the open level concept of this one. The overall story is fine, but I think the first game did a better job of hooking the player. I just wish the game was released in a better state.\t\t\t\t\t

cons:
- The open world somehow makes the game feel both more linear and more empty
-The changes to souls makes building your character far less nuanced and borderline pointless.
-The armor changes makes every piece feel samey, which also contributes to building your character feeling pointless.
-They also removed the ability to see the stats on your items..... why?
-The changes to enchants make them way less grindy but it also removes the whole aspect of searching for the perfect item, now you can just put your enchants on whatever you want.
-the potion is way too strong
-the quests feel uninspired and samey

I was an AVID minecraft dungeons 1 player a while back and i have so many complains its crazy so i will explain all now.

personally i didn't have any technical difficulties but i read many people did so i cant say in that aspect

issues:
- 1 ENCHANTMENT SLOT HUH ?????? but why, the enchant system in one was soooo fun even if it was very rng at times it was still better then CHOOSING YOUR ENCHANTMENT
- the enchants are awful and boil down to "on jump attack or final hit of combo send a wave of X" where x is fire, poison, frost, soul or mines, radiance (but worse) or something you wont choose because its just unoptimal
- What are echo shards for??? like what is the purpuse, litteraly limitting early game for 10 seconds because after that you just get so many you can ignore them
-obviously the length, i would barely complete the first mode of MD1 in 12 hours and that game was released 10 years ago
- The AUDACITY to put a "DLC coming soon" tab while serving a nothing burger
- REUSED MONSTROSITIES, excuse me? I have fought a sculk, copper and redstone monsrosity and thats like 3/6 actual bosses
-i didn't get a single unique naturally (2 from quests) until completing the main story after which i instantly got 5

and for my biggest complaint:
WHAT IS THE PURPUSE OF DIFFERENT ITEMS THEY ARE LITTERALY JUST RESKINS, in case you didn't play MD1, you had only 1 slot but every armor (even common) had an affect (and it had 3 enchants so you would actually hunt for a new armor) and gave you clear stats as in "+x hp" now there are 4 items WOO HOO, accept they are just placeholders for the little buffs (my friends and I call them auguments) they are extremely boring and if you find two good ones on a special piece of armor you can run it from IP 20 -> 90 (like i did) and just upgrade it in the blacksmith every time you fall behind

in MD1 i had grinded for a triple prospector katana and a triple prospector mystery armor i also had a gilded hand axe with critical 3 and i actually earned those items by putting it time. Here there is nothing to earn by putting it time.

The game may have potential and i didnt HATE playing it, it was fun at times, however it feels like MD1 would be a sequel to this.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAs much as I want to like this game, I unfortunately can't recommend it in its current state. I grinded this game and got all achievements. And I have over a hundred hours on Minecraft Dungeons 1 and thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Minecraft Dungeons 1 also launched in a state that left people feeling mixed. The issue, outside of the bugs, is balance and content. This game offers a longer campaign, but the issue is the endgame. It's fun! But the issue is that it's on a timer. You can't just grind the events. You complete it, then have to wait around for another to spawn in. Which gets into the double digits of minutes. Minecraft Dungeons 1 already had an interesting system to improve this being Raid Captains as well as Apocalypse difficulties and the Nether grind. This game's difficulty system is... different. You select Easy, Medium, and Hard. But the difficulty will automatically get harder as you level up with no way to dictate if you wanted that(Where as Minecraft Dungeons 1 has the Apocalypse system, difficulty is more in your hands). And the map you see in the game? You don't even explore all of it. It's obvious those sections will unlock with future DLC. But it's disappointing that it's still apart of the launch Map, it feels like a fake out for how much you can actually explore in the current state. Another glaring issue is that this game somehow shows less info per item when compared to the first game. All you see is the item number increasing. Nothing about attack speed, or even Bow Ammo. Both of which the first game had. And the new gear misses the mark by a decent bit. The random effects are a plus. The issue is that the gear lacks an identity beyond that. The first game, armor had trade offs for some of them at least. Like something might give extra base damage reduction but your Roll recharged slower. Nothing like that is in this game. Armor still has an identity, as the effects aren't completely random but rather pull from a new pool per item. But... it's still a weaker identity when compared to the first game. And having only one enchantment slot is ok for the armor, as it goes from 3 total enchants in the first game to 4 now. But the weapons having only one is... not good and honestly kills build diversity. They need two minimum. And we need roughly double the amount of enchantments as the game currently offers. They don't really change gameplay enough, especially when compared to the first game. It's a good direction, we just need more enchantments and more slots. And they've already increased the currency cap once, it's a step in the right direction. But with how expensive stuff is late game, it could be even higher. At least 200 echo shards, and maybe 999,999 Emeralds. The first game also didn't have a level cap, whereas this game stops you at 100. This could be because future updates and DLCs will increase that limit so you can't farm enchantment points but it's still weird in comparison with the first game. And the "new" soul corrupted Mobs are just... a worse version of Enchanted Mobs from Minecraft Dungeons 1. And at it's best, it's just reskinned Enchanted Mobs which... doesn't feel good for a supposedly "new mechanic".

I also wanted to dedicate a bit to the boss design in Minecraft Dungeons 2 verses Minecraft Dungeons 1. About halfway through the story I already had a build to just... stand in front of the boss and kill them in a few seconds. I was able to completely ignore their attacks and not engage with them due to this. And I just used the guitar that gives defense, the grindstone and fire ring for extra Melee attack damage. It's not really that complex even, just cycle through the items to make sure the buff is active. The first game had some phases for the bosses, and they felt unique. This game... the bosses all feel like Mini Bosses. There's no phases. There's no sudden change in attack pattern. All bosses just basically cycle through like 3 attacks with no difference from 100% HP to 1% HP.

Overall, I can't recommend this game in it's current state unfortunately. I recommend playing the first game instead of this one. You can pick it up and all DLC on sale for $20. It has more content and a better gameplay loop and endgame systems. Armor has a better identity and the game gives you more to help fulfill the power fantasy all Looter Shooters have. This game will likely improve over time, just as the first did. But it's still disappointing to see the sequel launched like this. We already have at least 1 DLC confirmed for this year, and another for next year, so I'd keep an eye on the game at least to see how/if it improves.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI been waiting for this game to come out for years and I have put in hundreds of hours into the first dungeons game. I put it 15 hours so far and will still be playing it more but as of now, I cannot recommend this game. I really want to but for some reason, I feel like the game went backwards from Minecraft Dungeons 1. If I recommend the first one more than the second, then it's not good enough of a game. This also includes my friend's perspective she told me while playing who hasn't played the games ever before so she was super excited to play with me as well. Me and her reached level 70 and I think it's right now a pretty good spot to make a review on the game's entirety.

A Bad Start
So where to I even begin. The main issue comes to you when you first launch the game. You have to pick between online and offline characters. I'm the type of person that wants to play both with friends and by herself but if I'm able to. In this game, it's not able to do that. Basically you have a split between characters and you have to either commit to playing together or just by yourself. There is zero pause menu when you're fighting in the game which I know other reviewers have already pointed out. You load in and play a little bit and realize, items have no stats. This means that you can't really differentiate them by much except just to test them out and see. My friend kept telling me "I just want to know the difference between these weapons if it's worth it to use." having stats would allow for this at a glance. This is a step back from MCD1. And when you play, there's also a queue system which is understandable for having dedicated servers but I feel like we could have just had player hosts similar to MCD1. While playing the game, sometimes the entire game will completely freeze and we both are kicked from the server. Then we have to join back.

An Unfinished Experience
For me, I really like playing Companions. There's enchants that talk about having companions fight for you. In MCD1, this was done poorly in the sense where other builds were much stronger. I just wanted to see if it's available on this game. Unfortunately, companions are tied to having souls which are harder to obtain this game. Having every artifact cost souls was a mistake. I do agree that having souls can limit the gameplay which restricts broken stuff but it's ridiculous that I can't use weaker artifacts to help me without draining my entire soul bank. Because bosses don't give souls, you are restricted to using one enchant slot on providing souls to yourself. Companions are also tied to Talismans which you only get one of the dogs. There's no duplicate talismans or more companions. In the previous game, I could summon multiple with ease. Having the throwing bee honey dipper is nice but due to how restrictive they feel being in a certain area, it just doesn't feel like a companion build. I also got Dynamo and wanted it to work out with getting a unique. I thought the multipliers would stack but instead, it's just all additive and doesn't make for a very strong build with rolling. It just feels that builds don't get much support compared to the first game that makes them work. Feather was removed to help with this build as well. The game just feels much more limiting and maybe that is what their goal is. However it removes the fun for casual players because now builds kind of have to center around specific gear sets for higher difficulties.

Speaking of higher difficulties, monsters get stronger quickly without us being able to adjust it as well as when it was with MCD1. Emeralds that drop from monsters and are created from salvaging LIMIT THEMSELVES TO 9,999. When it goes over that cap when salvaging, it goes back. At higher levels, items cost 6,500+ emeralds. This means you have to keep items to salvage to buy multiple items at the merchant. This is a serious design flaw. On top of that, Echo Shards will limit themselves to 100 instead. Rerolling gear becomes an absolute problem with this limit.

And with rerolling, this game offers very little variety when it comes to enchantments. The issue is that Uniques already take up 1 ENTIRE SLOT of the effects instead of being innate which means that you reroll one slot and that's all at the end of the game. Loot becomes less valuable this way. In MCD1, each loot would have randomized enchants and we would see if it's useful. With this game, the RNG is removed and you can get BiS very quickly. Having effects instead of enchants was a mistake. This means that if you get gear that only has 1 effect or zero, you just automatically trash it. With 2, you reroll into the set you want. In the first game, you cannot reroll (or whenever we played) so gear would be valuable. When a good gear drops that only has 2 enchants, that would be enough to still use. The main difference is that having 3 slots of enchants/effects would allow more versatility than having only 2 slots. This defeats the purpose of the game. The items that are supposed to feel unique also do not feel unique. It's just a buffed effect slot. It doesn't feel rewarding but rather just higher numbers instead of what cool possible things that they can do with enchants. Why does it feel more limiting when you get 4 slots instead of 1 slot for armor? Why does artifacts feel more limiting with 3 slots and 3 more talismans than simply 3 artifacts from a wider variety with no soul requirements? It's really not thought out except to restrict individual gameplay.

Multiplayer and its problems
When playing with my friend, she got a lot of drops she would think would help my build and constantly told me "Oh is there a way for me to drop this for you?" I told her that later there will be a giftwrapper probably and we can send each other gear. When playing multiplayer, it's kind of nice to drop gear for friends and then they drop you gear which fulfills the multiplayer experience of helping each other level up together. Then I started realizing, there is no giftwrapper. Why did they remove one of the core parts of the multiplayer experience? I don't play tank or anything like that. I was thinking of giving those items to another friend but now it's trashed. It feels like Microsoft was trying to fix abusive bugs or sending over super broken gear with perfect rolls. This game barely has "perfect rolls" and also if you're worried about bugs, then prevent them rather than limiting us. I read online that people change their save file and all and I understand that which is why they made online vs offline character but if those people want to ruin their fun, that's okay. They tried too heavily to implement and cater to random matchmaking queues that they forgot the friend lobbies and solo experience. I feel like they tried too hard to become a global multiplayer game.

Story Incoherence
The story in MCD1 was great. It's memorable but also not like the craziest amazing writing or whatever. It fit a game where we were just exploring. The problem with this game is that the story in itself didn't lead up to really big named boss fights. The first, you traveled to this place and fought the witch, the redstone monstrosity, the bubbling cauldron, etc. I can't remember big fights we did because it's all copy pasted. When we saw the warden, we were like "Oh we already saw them in the other cave back there." or the witch was literally just along the way. There's zero uniqueness. Also forcing side quests for talismans was a choice. And the story tells you to go here then there then here then there. In MCD1, you could go where you wanted as long as the mission is completed with its one direct path. It was easy to follow. I don't want to deal with escort quests. The quest markers also bugged and I would go to the wrong places before the markers would change to be a different area

I was excited to see this game come out, I even preordered it. I was completely and utterly let down.
For many reasons, I feel like this game was not my money's worth.

Firstly, this game plays like a beta build, with many glitches and unpolished aspects, such as the bangles not activating for no reason
Second, lots of returning artifacts are drastically nerfed compared to Dungeons 1. What did they do to my boi Corrupted Beacon >:(
Third, the RNG aspect is almost completely removed/reworked. In Dungeons 1, you would grind the same level over and over, hoping to get a good item, then you would grind for gold, so you could reroll the enchants. Towards the end, you get so many unique items guaranteed with quests, so they just don't feel rare anymore. (You used to have to work for a Harp Crossbow)
Fourth, enchants themselves just suck. Only one enchantment per item is horrible, especially for weapons. I'm disappointed.
Fifth, where did the stats go? You used to have numbers on items and armor, showing how good they were to directly compare the damage and health. Now armor is almost completely cosmetic. Damage dealt doesn't scale correctly, so 50 damage at level 5 and at level 80.
Sixth, the blacksmith is far too simple. You can max out all your gear in one trip and a couple thousand emeralds. Sure it can be useful, but where's the fun in that?
Seventh, they removed the gift wrapper.
Eighth, the walking around is really mind numbing. Mobs just spawn in swarms, everywhere, making it take twice as long to get to my destination, just trying to clear a path. Sure, mobs are fun, but when you can't ignore them when they block your path, it starts to lose its fun.
Ninth What is that map? I get that you want to save room for DLC, but seriously? Over half of the map is blank!
Tenth, far too short of a game for that price. I beat it in ~20 hours, but some of that were dungeons, rifts, etc. Endgame has far too little to do.
Eleventh, capped level 100 is so stupid. Hitting it fairly fast, and it doesn't increase the difficulty at all like I was hoping.
Twelfth, the game is far too easy after a certain point (lvl ~60 for me), and the grinding aspect isn't nearly as fun as Dungeons 1, not rewarding. That final boss was so unbelievably underwhelming. It sucked so bad. I was on freaking hard mode and it took hardly a minute.

That said, there are some good QOL changes, the graphics are nice, but yeah, hoping the DLCs make up for it.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tNew review because they updated the game and now linux suport is properly configured by default. to me all of the comotion with the game and the mixed review score is nothing but proof of the new norm of games. more people then ever are switching to Linux for thier games and now game devs are going to have to make an effort to ensure support.

Other then that I like the game and I hope that the game gets some more love now that the default install works on linux.

giving a positive review because it is a good game and i got it to work on steam deck/linux. however, as you have seen on other reviews, there is no out of the box Linux support like there was for the first game. and while it was never promised to us that linux would be supported by default, let me tell how easy it was to fix this.

By default the game is missing 2 files, Xcurl.dll and xgameruntime.dll, and litteraly by downloading these online and pasting them into the games directory. OH it just magicly works now.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI have now officially beaten the game and thus my review feels outdated and some things have changed.

GAME NEEDS TO BE ADVERTISED AS EARLY ACCESS AS WOW IT IS SHORT, AND I MEAN REALLY SHORT

Online is great, you will constantly be kicked because people refuse to set their online games to invite-only. I was kicked 4 times in a row for no reason. (Party settings exist guys, don't want randoms then turn on invite-only, I'm getting sick and tired of being kicked) and for some reason, despite me having a public lobby, nobody joins.

With 4 people, you can get to lvl 100 and beat the whole game in as little as 5 hours.

Once you beat the end boss, the story leaves on a giant cliffhanger so the devs can sell you the ending, which is a big no-no, especially when that expansion isn't coming for another year and a half.

Still no endgame. The devs' idea of an endgame was to take the storms from Diablo 4, give them the health bar of a Division 2 enemy in the sense that they are bullet sponges, and then give you a broken OP piece of gear, at which point there's nothing else to really do.

Game has far less content than its predecessor, which, when you think 2, you usually think bigger and improving on the original.

The open world, while cool, causes so much stuff to blend together, making navigation a pain, and at some points, you can actually get stuck on a random piece of geometry.

The guide system is supposed to help you with where to go, and yet half the time it tells you to jump from a cliff, walk through a wall, or leads you in the complete opposite direction. There's no way to fix this, as there's no way to mark things like dungeons or sidequests on the map.

There are multiple times where you click your character to move and instead hit, which causes you to die. Did I also mention that, unlike 1, you only get 1 life? If you die, you're forced back to Brave Haven and forced to redo said fight from the beginning. In 1, you had a max of 3 lives.

Milestones are forced. To keep the game fair, the game uses milestones, which, unlike 1, are forced, so the enemies always seemingly have 1 step above you. This means you could finally have a good build, only for the milestone to lvl up, thus making your build obsolete. In fact, the game outright punishes you for leveling up; as a result, some basic mobs can actually 1-shot you at times. Why we can't turn off or at least tune the Milestone system is beyond me.

Devs removed the 999 cap for Emeralds (now it's 10,000), but kept the shards at 100, which forces you to fight these soul enemies that have some annoying attack mechanics.

Jumping adds very little to the game and, in some instances, can be downright frustrating, as the way the environments blend together leads you to think you can make a jump, but in reality, you can't.

There's no actual map that shows which way is North, South, East, or West, unlike 1.

All 3 boss fights in the campaign are reskinned from one another, which is a joke. I know Minecraft Legends was a flop, and I guess they didn't want to take a gamble on this, but the budget feels like a couple quid at times. (SPOILER WARNING) Oh, and here's another kicker: the final boss, the mastermind of this Illager High Council, literally gets away. You let him escape, allowing him to come back stronger than ever in the final cutscene, so there aren't even really 3 boss fights, more like 2.

No Tower like the first game.

Absolutely no replay value, as once again classes were not considered. I could see myself, like in Diablo 4, playing the game 4 times trying out the characters, but because you can use everything you pick up, there's no reason to make multiple characters. Seriously, Mojang, give us a necromancer class so I can command my skeletons and zombies or something like that, or a healing swordsman as a paladin.

No way to move your character from offline to online or vice versa, which is ridiculous. This was a basic feature in Borderlands 2 for the Xbox 360, so there's no excuse, really.

Towards the end mission, the game repeats the same mechanics about 4 times in a row: you'll need to get these music block creatures (3 of them) to open the door, and then you need to do that 2 to 3 more times, fight the boss, but not before shoving about 3 ambushes at you. By the end, I was begging it to be over with.

Overall, pick this game up on a deep sale. It's £25 for a game that's only 5 hours of gameplay, and then in order to get more playtime out of it, you have to spend another £20 for the DLC, which doesn't release until July of next year.

For now the game will be uninstalled to free up room which feels like a joke because I only just got this game and I legitimately have nothing else to do besides min max when i'm already 1 shotting bosses what a pointless game.

But there are still a lot of glaring problems you wouldn't find in a polished experience, or a complete game.

There are definitely bugs. I've run into a few, but the internet assures me there are more.
For instance, some artifacts that apply a status to you, when you use them, they fail to apply the status, go on cooldown, and become unusable, forcing you to swap them out and back in again to restore functionality. This can be crucial to surviving if that artifact heals/protects you but it bugged and just doesn't trigger. You can definitely lose to a boss because you encounter this bug seemingly for no reason.

Now so I don't have to spoil them, there is an enemy that traps. And I don't know what's causing it, I suspect killing it while it's trapping you causes this bug where you become permanently stuck. Can't move, roll, or jump. If you teleport out, you can walk again, but rolling and jumping will become de-synced where the animation for them still plays, but you can't jump or roll in actuality, only fixable by killing your character or remaking the world. And it also reminds me of a bug I saw online where a certain boss arena can softlock you if the launch pad launches you into the hole.

Less vital, but still annoying is the guidance trail which sometimes guides you in impossible directions, either trying to guide you through a door you haven't opened yet, or a wall too tall to jump over, and sometimes it feels like it just doesn't understand the map to properly guide you.

Although I am okay with the mouse movement, it raises some issues where I try to click on a chest, and the pathing tries to move me to a platform above me or something, sometimes it has issues interacting with objects right and front of you and trying to move you elsewhere. And sometimes because left click is move and attack, I'll end up attacking something I didn't want to because I was trying to move past it. WASD functionality would be very appreciated.

The last talisman is also very underwhelming considering what it takes to get to it, and how some of the ones you get leading up to it just feel better.

The first game had a melee weapon, ranged weapon and armor, each of which could have 3 enchantments on it.
And while having 4 armor slots now let you customize each piece seperately, and also give each a different enchantment, it takes away from weapon enchanting, since those you can only enchant with one. Even with more armor variety, you actually reduce the amount of enchantment complexity compared to the first game from 9 to 6. And 4 of those are taken up by armor, you can only get 1 melee weapon enchant and 1 ranged weapon enchant which is unfortunate since this game features so many of them, that it now just feels like pick whichever enchant is the best or fits your build best, instead of mixing and matching multiple enchants on 1 weapon for more build variety.

There is basically no post game either. Aside from finishing off any sidequests you hadn't already, you only get a new occasional event to farm for items, which becomes invalidated once you've made your build.

And once you reach max level, the maximum the blacksmith can upgrade your items to is 149, but enemies and chests can still drop items that are level 150, 151, 152, etc. So you can't even be the strongest you can be, but you're still at the mercy of RNG since you could get a Unique piece of loot that doesn't tie into your build at all, or dropped at level 149, which just feels like a pointlessly annoying restriction considering you can't level up anymore.

Another thing, this one is regarding item drops.
- In Minecraft Dungeons 2, you can get different items depending on what region you're in. (so far so good)

- In order to see what you got and what you're missing, you can open the map, and move it over the area to see how much of that area's items you're missing. For example maybe you have 50% item completion in the woods but only 33% in the ice area.

- There are also region-specific items for if you're inside caves or dungeons, which don't appear on the map.

- Because caves and dungeons ARE NOT on the map, there is LITERALLY ZERO WAY to see those region's drops and which ones you're missing.

- You can check in your inventory your overall completion, and let's say you're missing just 1 item.
- You have NO WAY of knowing if you're missing that from an overworld dungeon or a sift dungeon because you can't check the region drops for either.

As I said at the beginning, I love this game, but after encountering enough shortcomings you have to wonder how they were able to with confidence sell pre-orders for this game bundled in with DLC that isn't out yet? It's sloppy.

Once I feel like I'm not running into this problems anymore. Sure, I'll change my review. But as it stands right now, if you're someone who can look past bugs, oversights, and the infrequent softlock, you could give it a shot.\t\t\t\t\t

Minecraft Dungeons is one of my favorite games of all time. I bought it the day it came out and had over a week of playtime before Microsoft deleted my account for no reason, and even then I still loved the game enough to rebuy it on Steam, as well as all six DLCs, and work all my progress back and better than ever- I'm talking Apocalypse +14. It was also one of my favorite co-op experiences of all time, if not the greatest, with dynamic difficulty balancing and the night mechanic made for some very tense moments.
This is not Minecraft Dungeons.

The game feels more like a spin-off than anything, and what's so upsetting is that it's not a bad one. It's just not really a good one either. There's three main issues I have which I will explain in a moment, and after that I'll nitpick everything else. I kept a close eye on my playtime and treated my experience like a demo in case I did not like the game- I will be refunding it after this post is published. Let's begin.

Combat is boring.
I'm not really sure how to explain it, but it just doesn't hit the same. The biggest culprit that people probably didn't notice is that mobs don't stagger like they did in the original (MCD1) so basically every fight is just charging into waves head first and beating them all to death while you tank damage- the healing potion was once an emergency button to use tactically and get out of tight situations, now you have to use it constantly, and the scariest part about that is the devs seem aware of this fact: they reduced the potion's cooldown but made it heal less. And artifacts don't help- while the original game treated them like your active skills, which made it very easy to control how your build was used, this game just hands you random ♥♥♥♥ to throw at the wall; they don't really help.
In conclusion, the original game's combat required skill and fast thinking- now you just walk up to enemies and attack them.

I don't like the progression.
The whole time I was playing this game I just felt empty inside. I wasn't deterred from playing the game, but it was a soft sadness within me that didn't want to admit "I would rather do something else". The enchantment system had been perfected in the original game, but without knowing what needs changing and what doesn't, perfection is easy to break. And they broke it. Enchanting was what would make or break your builds in the original game, and they've taken it all away. I literally haven't even enchanted my gear yet in the first 90 minutes I've been playing, where the original game taught you how to enchant during the tutorial. I've heard from a friend that they made it really restrictive, you need books or something and it's really stupid to obtain them. It creates the problem that Paper Mario has been suffering since Sticker Star: there's no reward. There's no point to getting XP if leveling up doesn't do anything, and getting new gear doesn't seem to really do anything- especially not when they don't even show you the stats on anything. Just like any megacorporation, they expect you to just buy into every new thing without a second thought. And I won't even bother with the open world stuff; all the quests so far amount to "go here and interact with this thing".
In conclusion, the original game's progression system was perfected and rewarding- now you just bare your teeth and deal with the worst.

Failure has no consequence.
When you were playing a level in the original game, it was a whole new sensation. You had four lives to make it through the level, and every time you lost one it hurt your soul to know "Damn it, that's going to make the rest of this level harder." Especially for levels with bosses at the end, where you'll need as many as possible to burn through the fight. You're not immortal here, but you have infinite lives. When death has no consequence, you don't really feel inclined to stay alive. Lo and behold: whenever you die, you just have to teleport to the last checkpoint, which can't be further than about 100 blocks or so. It's just an inconvenience, and the only thing you lose is your soul, saying "I should play something that's actually a challenge" which the combat is a challenge, but still. You get the point. Nothing matters when your actions have no consequence. I get that's kind of an unavoidable issue when you make an open world game with fast travel, but it goes to show this game shouldn't have been open world to begin with.
In conclusion, the original game's punishment cost you around 30 minutes to even around an hour- now you just lose mere seconds.

Nitpicking Lightning Round!
Rolling was well balanced in MCD1; it helps to dodge attacks but shouldn't be used to get around because you were slower during the cooldown. Now there's no penalty, so if you want to be efficient you should be rolling everywhere like an Ocarina of Time speedrunner.

Jumping is a mechanic they actually did alright; it allowed for more advanced exploration and added some more diversity to combat. The problem is both of those two positives I just now stated have problems. The former is that it ruins the map, which I'll get to in a moment. The latter is that the jump attack's power is calculated by your weapon's power, meaning if you have a fast multi hit weapon it doesn't do ♥♥♥♥, and if you have a slow weapon it's really overpowered.

The map sucks. It was good in the first game because in dungeon crawlers you typically only need to know where you can stand and where you can't, which the MCD1 map accomplished, and you had both an overlay map that was helpful to get around and a fullscreen map when you needed to stop and analyze things. Now you have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ minimap that barely helps and an even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fullscreen map that's only useful to check objectives. I keep opening my inventory accidentally because there's no more overlay map, and I had to remember that the actual overlay map was already on screen.

Souls are an overimplemented mechanic. The first game handled this well because some artifacts used souls, in which case they usually had virtually zero cooldown, where the others did. By making skills only usable by killing enemies, it demands that you always be in a scenario where you have plebians to kill- which causes problems in scenarios where you don't. I brought this up earlier, I think it would be cool if the soul meter charged on its own and artifacts themselves had no cooldown- either that or just go back to the old system.

The graphics are nice, but they're not authentic. The original game was shaped beautifully in Minecraft's paint, this game looks like it was based on a texture pack. It's not bad, for the sake of being graphics it's well designed, but the devs got so used to making trailers they forgot how to make the actual game.

Now I'll be nice and only say this once: stop talking about the lack of WASD. It was like that in the first game. I thought it was weird at first too but you get used to it. That's all I'm gonna say.

Conclusion
I'm listening to the Minecraft credits music as I right this. I feel like I'm about to cry.
Minecraft Dungeons was such a good game and I loved it way more than it deserved. I was so excited for this game because it wasn't just a sequel, but a continuation of the saga established in the first game. Only for it to go up in flames- metaphorically and literally. It hurts to sit down and say that I can't like this game. The least I can say is it's not bad; if the 60% review score for this game proves anything it's that some people are capable of enjoying this game, and that's okay. I am not some people.
At the very least, now I'll have no regrets playing the original game again.

They made it open world, now you have to slog around the map to get to dungeons and different locations. The mouse and keyboard movement is abysmal, there is no WASD support.

The enemies are boring, the map is boring and there are barely any secrets for you to explore. They capped the currency so low that much of it gets wasted unless you micromanage it. There are no rewards for playing on a harder difficulty.

The game feels soulless. The bosses are not fun, 4 are them are just a variation of each other. I didn't even realize I was fighting the final boss until the credit screen rolled after it. There's no point in making builds because of how easy this game is.

There is no tower, there is no difficulty selection besides "hard". They removed the overlay map, making the map a lot less useful. They hide most of your stats and the weapon stats. You can't pause the game. There is basically no endgame. The only endgame you get are storms, they are very repetitive and you have to wait for them to randomly spawn, it takes a long time for them to spawn.

There's hardly any variation between the quests, they're almost all the same with mediocre rewards. Keep in mind you have to walk across the map a lot to get from location to location, it gets repetitive very fast, especially given that you can only fast travel to railways. You need to walk everywhere else.

You can't just swap between online and offline mode anymore, they require you to make a new character for each mode. So if you want to play with friends you have to make an online hero. Now you have to deal with a lot of lag even when playing in singleplayer. Its awful and unbelievable they made it this way.

The entire time it felt like a slog to play through. They took out all the features that made Minecraft dungeons 1 so repayable. Even after beating the game, there is not a single moment I thought was fun or very memorable. It's just a boring game, especially when compared to Minecraft dungeons 1.
